showing how first drive failed the process would actually be useful for newbies, less anxiety for them if its something familiar, nice vid anyway
i did mention the failure and how i knew it wasn't working with the solid red light for a long time, but point taken
@@mikesunboxing So when the 1st attempt failed did you just remove the flash drive usb and plug in the second or did you power off the psu before hand? Best tutorial i have found but i'm about to update bios for the 1st time and want make sure i don't screw it up lol
Just noticed you switched the psu on before second installation.

@@mikesunboxing Hey Mike. Would'nt you elaborate on what you did when first attempt failed?
Got the exact same board. Had the exact same problem. LED light blinked for around 5-8 secs then started glowing constantly red, just like in your case.
I had prepared an MBR FAT32 usb using Rufus with the FreeDos seeting, deleting the files it created to then copy the one and only bios file onto readily made USB, renaming it ofc.
What I did after the first attempt failed was to:
1. Shut off PSU, unplug power cord and removing USB.
2. Clearing CMOS as instructed in the manual with JBAT1.
3. Plugging in power cord. turning on PSU.
4. Insert a different appropriately formatted USB and press Flash Bios Button.
I repeated this 5 times. Same result.. Constant red light. I waited 15 min the first time and 20 min the second time.
I event went ahead and plugged everything backup after I saw your fix-video you linked to above, following the same steps as you.
Same result. :(
I was so stoked to get my build ready, damn.. I had issues joining your discord btw,. Could'nt see or chat in the messageboards even after waiting out those 10 min.
But yea, i might just have a DOA board. I'd still love some feedback from all of ye as i'll probs be getting a new board cause of warranty.
Thank you for the precious tutorial. BIOS flashed flawlessly WITH the CPU (5600X), RAM and SSD already installed!
Great to hear!
Glad to read this because I was just thinking "Ahh fk, now I have to take all the bits and bobs, including CPU and -cooler, off..." The thought nearly gave me a panic attack.
My EXACT problem. Don't know why my older CPU that worked with my old board isn't working with the newer model board.
@@Oncewaslostbutnowimsavedsometimes it’s because newer boards don’t support some older model chips
This was really useful! I liked how you went over each step and talked about pitfalls. Only video I found that does that.

Why do you take 10+ minutes to explain what is inside the instruction manual that takes 5 lines?
Thanks for the post. Your directions were simple and easy to understand. Somehow during my build I forgot that a bios update was required for the newer CPUs, in my case 5800x. Once I clued in, I found your post and followed your guidelines exactly. It worked perfectly as you suggested it might. I think the guidance from you suggesting that you go back to using a bare board even if it means removing peripherals, is spot on. Cheers.
Glad it helped! :-)
Thank you so much for the step-by-step walkthrough of this process! I had a bios update go wrong and no one else was explaining that you must use fat32 and to watch the red blinking light from the button. My mobo is back up and running and now I can sleep tonight!

For those of you who are getting solid red light during the flashing process, I would recommend converting your USB thumbstick from GPT to MBR through the command prompt.

First time in weeks managed to comment before Bob. Great video, Thanks Mike.
Welcome back! lol poor bob
Just flashed my new MSI MPG B550 Gaming Carbon WiFi, and it worked perfectly! Thanks for this great video! It's really the best one I've found. However, some others recommend using an older USB 2.0 instead of the newer USB 3.0, and also smaller capacity on the drive, like no more than 16GB. I purchased an 8GB 2.0 just for this task. The flashing took about 5 minutes to complete, and the system shut down and then restarted just like you show. I completely forgot to remove my RAM. But no CPU, NVMe M.2 or GPU were installed. Also had the power to my RGB unplugged, but all the fans were plugged in and came on, including the fans and RGB on my AIO. Keeping my fingers crossed this did not cause any harm.
should be fine Steve
How did it go mate ?
Thx for letting me know how many time it took
@@mikesunboxing so before i flash the bios i should remove gpu, cpu, ram, mouse and keyboard?
Quality work. TYSM. MSI should pay you for this as you've saved them from a lot of tech support calls.
yeah you are not wrong there
Also to say thank you on this video also, I got MSI B550 Gaming Plus with 5600G so needed to update BIOS first. Did all the steps as described (without components installed) and it worked perfectly. A few minutes for the BIOS update, powered off, installed components and it posted without any issues. Maybe to note here that initial POST takes quite a while (15-30s) but seems like eternity because you think that the board may be bricked. I used Hama 32GB USB 3.0 stick formatted to FAT32, works great.
Great to hear!
I want to build 5600x with same motherboard you told. can save bios update in pendrive and do that he did in video ? And it's first time build not update.
Thank you sir! No one else mentions that you have to change the BIOS file name so motherboard recognizes it. I tried like 5 times before I found your video. I'd buy you a beer if I could.
Welcome 👍
Thank you! I always flash with a flash drive, MSI comes out with their new "center". Like a dummy, I thought to trust it. 10 minutes later, starting to panic. Your instructions were spot on. Didn't have to disassemble all my gear. Worked great. Normal and boring b550-a. I did use a USB 3 drive, but also unplugged all peripherals, Ethernet, etc. Thanks again for getting me back up in 15-20 minutes.

Thanks for making this video, Mike! I do find it strange that some USB drives work with the BIOS Flash Back (or whatever the board manufacturer is calling it) and some don't. Would you agree that besides making sure it is formatted FAT32, that the drive was USB 2.0 for maximum compatibility?

MSI has no warning that the board can be bricked in their instructions, it simply says there is no need for further assembly ( No need to install CPU and memory ). I believe if MSI was afraid boards would be ruined they would indicate a severe warning in their instructions right on page 32.

yes very good point

Thanks Steve. You saved my life
Man, thank you so much for this video! This has been my first venture into troubleshooting my own PC and this has been a huge help.
glad it helped you
Thank you for the Video, my Motherboard arrived today. now I still need to get a 5800x :(
Enjoy!
How's it going?
I used a similar process on my Aorus X670E Extreme - the major difference being that it does not matter what it on the board you could have the system fully built or just a bare board, throw the USB on and press the button - and the button which has an LED flashes away for a while and when it finishes the machine reboots. All done. All systems should have this.
So.. it appears that the USB drive itself is very important in this process. I tried five different sticks and only one work... four sticks caused my red light to flash non-stop, but the board did not power cycle. I waited about 30 minutes for all of the attempts. They were 64 GB, 32GB, 4GB, 8GB, and 8GB. The last 8GB worked.
Here a clue the USB drive wont work on your MSI B550 when you go to format it... if it automatically tries to format in any other format other than FAT32... it may not work. If you try to force format to FAT32 in the CMD prompt, the BIOS flash may still not work. If its a large format drive greater than 64gig.. it may not work ( it appears the smaller the drive, the better).
Good luck everyone!!! I hope this advice helps a little!
thanks for the advice
@@mikesunboxing Thanks for the tutorial on how to flash the bios! It was a huge help!
I have the same problem. I am using a 64gb, so I had to forced it into fat32.
I am pretty anxious about that.
Was the last drive(the one that worked) 2.0 or 3.0?
Also, I was using 16gb but it stopped working. Like the drive itself became undetectable by my laptop after using it to flash bios.
And the cpu is still undetectable you the motherboard.
So i am trying to flash it again. I bought this 64gb and forced it into fat32, but it seems like it will go like this forever. Just flashing nonstop.

One thing that seemed obvious to me but apparently actually made the process impossible. Do NOT connect and turn on the motherboard with your power switch from your case. The motherboard will always ignore your USB in such a case.

Apparently, according to another video that I watched, the reason some USBs don't work is that the flash BIOS function doesn't detect 3.0 USBs, only 2.0. It's really odd indeed but that's ostensibly the explanation.

Hi Mike. The flash button is flashing since almost 5 hours. I think something went wrong. Can I just remove the USB drive or will this brick the mainboard?
that is fine, the bios is not flashing if it is taking that long
Thank you very much! It has finally worked :)
@@eatmyshorts7482 Glad to hear that 🙂
Great video. Very helpful. Thanks Mike 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Great vid. Thank you. I've just got the Msi B550 mag tomahawk and a 5600x. Is the procedure the same. Are they being shipped yet with the updated bios already done. And if they are how can you tell if it's required. What would happen if you followed this procedure and the board didn't need the update. Thanks.
same procedure, depending how new the board is look for a 5000 series ready sticker on the box meaning it is done already
Hi Mike, just watched your invaluable in depth walk through on B550 Bios Flash Back CPU Upgrades. Just received MAG B550M MORTAR WIFI and noted on front cover of box it states "AMD RYZEN 5000 DESKTOP READY" this applies to me its not necessary to carry out Bios Flash Back? I plan on installing the AMD Ryzen 5600X I would appreciate your thoughts on the requirement for a Bios upgrade. Thanks again for the great video.
yes you are right the board is ready for the CPU already
Это же лучшее видео по прошивке биоса!!!!)
Спасибо и надеюсь, что вы в порядке, со всем происходящим. Мы все братья и сестры в области технологий
So I was updating the bios and my system restarted.
Then my power went off and I was just broken. On booting, it was stuvk on the cpu debug light. I removed everything and reinstalled the cpu. It git stuck on ram. I added the ram. It got stuck on vga. I finally put everything back and it git stuck on boot. I had to flash the bios.
Then you said I needed to do this on a bare board. Omg. I could not repeat that again. Luckily 2 people in the comments said it works okay with components installed and I went for it.
YOU AND THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMENTS ARE LIFESAVERS. SHE BOOTED!!
Yay! Good to hear :-)
At the end do you first turn off your psu? And then unplug the cables en usb drive?
yes that is what i would do
@@mikesunboxing can you after just continue with the pc build?
@@darkninja4826 i would put it all together outside the case first to check but entirely up to you
Ive just received my new motherboard amd and which flash drive do i need to flash bios thank you or the one u have in the video and where to buy it from thnk you
i use the sandisk flair 32GB i got mine on amazon, i think there are links in the video description
so what steps did you do when you noticed the first time that the lights stayed on? did you leave the power on, and switch out the usb drive, or did you turn the power off, then switch usb drive, and turn it back on?
the second part
What happened if power goes out while updating BIOS in this Way.
Will I be able to reprocess. Or my motherboard will dead
i did test that with a b450 motherboard and after trying to recover it twice it worked fine, but this might not always be the case
@@mikesunboxing thanks 😊
@@TheStreetDriver No problem :-)
Hi Mike , just wanna ask I have a motherboard called MSI mag b550M mortax max wifi and a processor ryzen 5 5600x, should I flash the bios ? Just wanna make sure and also is it ok to use any usb ? (for example USB 3.2/ 32gb ) or should I use older usb (USB 2.0 / 8gb ) Thanks 🙏🙏
Answered on the other video comment
@@mikesunboxing yes and Thank you Mike, Godspeed
Hi, I see you still answer the comments, that's very nice of you!
I got a problem. I do exactly everything right, but red light flashes infinitely (tried few times 3 different USBs and it is still flashing for over a hour). What can cause that? Do you think MoBo is dead now? Or is there any fix? I scrolled through hundreds of comments but didn't find any way to fix that.
CPU led is flashing, the problem is 100% in MoBo because everything works fine with other MoBo.
Sorry for my English it's not my original language. Hope you'll help me someway!
that usually means it can't read the USB drive or maybe the file. More often it is the drive itself. try another drive and also check if it is GPT or MBR we have done a video on that also
Thanks for this!
thanks for watching
Thank you so so much
You're welcome!
@OP I just purchased this MSI MPG B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI Motherboard and an AMD Ryzen 5 5600x CPU (January 7th, 2022). Will I need to update/flash my BIOS or should it already be up-to-date? It sounded like you do not want to flash your BIOS unnecessarily. I'm not sure how to tell if the motherboard is older than my CPU since I just purchased both. Any insight is much appreciated!
look for a 5000 series ready sticker on the box, no sticker means you will need a bios update
Thanks. Saved my life.

Please help me! Today i build my pc, i have this motherboard and a ryzen 7 5800x. Do i need to do your steps in the video before i build it, or i just go build it? (Sorry for my bad english)
look for a ryzen 5000 series ready sticker on the box, otherwise you will need a bios update
@@mikesunboxing yes it has the sticker
recently to switch processor from Ryzen 5 3600x to Ryzen 7 5700x with a B550 Gaming Edge Wifi Board. put everything back and no boot, no display but the fans were fast and loud, only to realized that i forgot to update the bios. and found your tutorial very helpful.
used 2 USB Sticks, a SanDisk(apple green) 8gb and a Kingston (black) 8gb.
SanDisk one didnt work, updating took way too long, unlimited red blinking (hours)
the Kingston one work, although I have to change GPT to MBR for the USB Stick.
update/bios flash done in 7 to 10mins.
thanks!
Glad it worked in the end! Enjoy you new upgrade
That may sound stupid, but if the first USB doesn't work, how do you stop the flashing process? Do you get rid of the USB stick while motherboard on or do you power off and then put it out ? I don't want to brick my BIOS because of first flash bios not working before of the USB stick... Thanks for the vids
power down the PSU is my best bet
@@mikesunboxing Thanks ! If someone can confirm that that would be nice 👍🏻
