I was having gas gauge issue with my 2007 G35 coupe; replaced sending unit on driver side and did not fix the problem. Saw this video and did the cotton swab cleanup trick and problem fixed. Gauge is working again and your warning about the gas line saved me. Had a bunch of rags ready and did the trick. Thanks for posting this!! You saved me a big repair bill.

I just did this today on my 08 G37 coupe after watching your video. My gas gauge had been acting up the last few weeks. I cleaned the sensors on both sides of the tank. Was a pretty easy fix. Went for a drive after and the gauge still seemed way off. I came home shut off and restarted the car and right away it was reading near empty like it should. Filled up and all seems good now. Great tip! Thanks for the clear instructions. One safety tip...When I work on the fuel system and a tank of gas is opened, please disconnect the battery. One spark could ignite the gasoline. 😮

Bro, I love this video. Thank you. It was simple and easy to use. After watching your video, I rode around with a gallon of gas and ran my 2013 G-37 to empty before removing the pump to prevent to much gas from spilling out. This is a good fix.
I just finish doing this on my 08 g35. Really easy to do. I made sure to disconnect the battery and open gas cap before starting. I didn't have any fuel leak out. Thanks for the video!

Great video. Thanks for posting. Best way to depressurize the fuel system is to remove the fuel pump fuses/relays while the engine is running. When the engine cuts out then the pressure is relieved from the system.

Man you are a life saver, since having the car for 2 years now I've never had it go above 260miles; mileage per gallon horrible. Just got my first Service Engine today, took it O'Reillys for a code check. Googled and found your video, did the work in pitch black with my flashlight. Check engine light gone and now it's at 350miles, subscribed and liked. You are the f*ckin man!
Did you clear the code or the code disappeared by it’s self did it to mine rn and the code is still on
Another way to look at the problem is to check the resistance between terminals 2 and 5 on the fuel sensor unit and fuel pump (passenger side). Should read 3 ohms Full and 80 ohms empty. Then drivers side should read 3 and 43 , respectively between terminals 1 and 2. If these are in range, then issue is with dashboard gauge. If out of range, then try cleaning as suggested in this video.
If dashboard gauge, a crude fix is to put a variable resistor (10 -100 ohm) across the above terminals for each sender, and find the “sweet” spot where the gauge reads half full when actually full and empty when a quarter full.

And I did what one of your viewers put on there reply. I turned on the car and then unplugged the fuel pump. Waited for the car to die. And it relieved all the pressure in the fuel line no spillage at all.

@@tonser316 it just wasn't reading right. But give this a try it might fix it the needle might be stuck. And while you're at it go ahead and use the Q-tip in the alcohol and clean it all off. But be careful of the gasket do not disturb it otherwise you'll have to get a new one
@@tonser316 I don't know what type of vehicle you got. But my vehicle was an Infiniti G35 four-door sedan. And it worked out great. I did my buddies Nissan 350Z and it made the engine light come on. We just put a code scanner on it deleted the code that was coming up. The code was air in the fuel tank. He's gone several weeks and the engine light has not came back on. He also hit the gasket and the gasket would not fit again. So he had to get a new one. That's why I said don't disturb the gasket otherwise you'll have to get a new one

Nice one. I loosened the petrol cap, which released the air pressure and stopped fuel being pushed out through the pump when hose removed.

Next time twist open the gas cap to release some built up pressure

for safety disconnect the battery
That's Not related to fuel line pressure , if it was fuel pressure would go up and down with the fuel level of the tank. Remove fuse while running let the car run dry pressure is now zero.
@@philipholman1713 Philip, I think you are right. The pressure in the line is created by the fuel pump, which is independent of the pressure of the tank itself.

Those little bolts you have to take out are 8mm. Mine had paint on them I had to chip off to get the wrench on. I tried a screw driver but just ended up stripping out the screw head. So best advice is just use 8mm wrench or a socket if you can get in on. May have to chip off the paint first before a socket will fit. One other thing, be careful around the edge of that circular opening, its sharp. Found out the hard way.
Pulled mine out, sprayed with carb cleaner with the red straw on it, worked perfect.

Did you disconnect the battery first?
Unscrew fuel cap to relieve tank pressure.
When you disconnected the plug before removing the sender unit you might consider sending 12 volts to the guage to rule out a faulty guage.
Electrical contact cleaner can help you clean the contact surfaces on both the fixed and the moving arm.

Use a pink eraser to clean electrical contacts. Also you can check the range of resistance as you clean it with a multimeter. make sure it works before putting it back together. Don't make any sparks...
After I pulled my pump and cleaned it then and reinstalled why is it that I can smell a lot of gas fumes when driving.im sure I put everything back on right and tight but I feel like the black rim still let’s out fumes.what do U think is going on??thanks in advance

Question, was your fuel leveling sensor light on before the repair? And if so did it go off after cleaning anything.
Note: Toggling the accessory power on and off will cycle the fuel pump, however the air bubble won't be relieved until gas is pushed into the motor. You should get at least a rough idle until (or an engine stall) until the bubble is worked out.
So you’re suggesting to have a small tank of gas ready to refuel after cleaning and then toggling the acc? I’m about to do this same project so any tips would help.

Do this with a full tank so if it ignites it doesn't explode. Gas fumes inside an empty tank is like sitting on a bomb.

i have a 2007 g37 coupe and have the same problem and tried it, it worked but stopped again next time i started my car. when i pulled out the gas pipe, gas poured out of the tank instead of the cable
i’m having trouble putting the floater back in it goes in but not all the way in where i can push it down to put the bolts down

Mine might be the actual pump. Or it might be that I am not placing the float in the right position. I have an M45 so it's difficult to tell if it's aligned back in the same spot inside the tank. It's getting irritating so I might just take it to the dealership. There's a recall on that issue.

I have a 2005 G35 SEDAN and the issue I am having is knowing for a fact that I have a half a tank one minute the needle will show half a tank and the next minute after driving it for 5 miles the needle is sitting on low with the light on and later it corrects itself! This goes on back and forth and when I fill the tank it will move to just before full never past it! What would you say from experience will this procedure help me or do I have another problem?
What is the function of the black hose in the fuel tank
Does anyone know where I can find the fuel variable resistor/fuel leveler sensor (whatever you call the chip) by itself. I only need that peice, but I can't find it anywhere on the market. Please and thank you!
I pulled mine out to clean it and discovered the little plastic cover was long gone. Either it’s floating around in my gas tank, or some mechanic for the previous owner forgot to put it back on. It seems to hold the pointer against the little piano key thing.
Did you use alcohol on the cotton swab or nothing at all?
I replace both sides with new pump assembly and sending unit. The gauge still reads 3/4 full on 2014 infinti qx50....any real solution ?.
Try adjusting the floats by bending the rods if there's isn't an option to adjust on the unit itself

My G's fuel gauge started acting up a couple days ago. The needle started going up to 1/2 tank while I was driving, even though I knew I only had about a 1/4 tank left. I filled it all the way up, so the needle on the fuel gauge went up. But after driving for about 90 miles, the needle hasn't dropped one bit. It still shows a full tank.

you used water on the q tip or new gas?
The pins are on top of the tanks. When you pull the connector off, just put the probes in the connector on top of the fuel tank. No need to pull out the pump and float, but cleaning them may help as the video shows. In my case it did not and I replaced both sides, but that did not help. So my problem was with the fuel gauge in the dashboard, which is expensive. Hence the variable resistors.
mine was the cable, 2 wires were cut in the cable that connects to the fuel pump
I just recently did this. Now my car doesn’t want to start. Gave me a code p0171. Running lean. Could it be that I got air in my system? Been trying to bleed it out and can’t get it to stay on. Cranks and starts but doesn’t stay on
I been dealing with the same code. Might try this so hopefully it helps me, though maybe I didn't have enough fuel in the tank
I have 04 Z and I did this to my sensors 2 days ago and it used to mark a full tank at 75% and I put gas in today and it filled up to F all the previous times it fill up to 75% keep y’all updated if it holds
Also the driver side sensor I believe was positioned incorrectly from previous owner the floater was stuck might want to check that too

Why didn’t you remove the screws first, lift gauge, then remove fuel line, so fuel can just flow back into tank?
Probably because the fuel line is too short and awkward. You could try it your way but the pump assembly is so big that you'd pull the hose off and get gas everywhere resulting in fuel everywhere instead. I know because I did this yesterday.

Lunar - cleaned both while tank was full & both looked cleaned Compared to Videos. Once needle dropped below 3/4 = check engine light went back On 😠 i'm guessing it's one of the Sensors are bad 🤔

I did this exact steps. I filled the car up and the gas leaked from the bottom of my car by the gas tank. I checked all the lines and theyre all tight. Any thoughts as to why that could have occurred?
