    Thanks for your video on the cost of living in Mauritius. Unfortunately cost of living is skyrocketing around the world with the cost of energy rising. I can imagine how life can get even difficult for Mauritians on low to medium salary since lot's of products are imported. The costs of living in Australia is also rising as inflation biting us hard. The cost of Petrol is around $2.20 - $2.40 and Diesel $2.25 - $2.50 Litre and at some point there were talk of running out of electricity in the Eastern part of Australia. Fortunately crisis were averted, but there is talk of a sharp increase in electricity and gas bill which does not bode well for the future.

    It's actually so expensive that it is almost half the price of where I live ;-) For any Americans/Europeans those costs are dead cheap. I you have a business on Internet this is the place to be, cheap taxes and cheap cost of living. Talking about the taxes, 15% is unheard of in Europe. In Belgium where I live it's more like 50% and the cost of living is double... making a 4x advantage on the ratio earnings/cost of living...

    • @LucyLeheilleix
      @LucyLeheilleix  2 года назад +2

      Yes, Europe is more for certain things. I’d argue the food cost is less though as the fresh produce is way better in Europe. It’s extremely expensive here for locals though. I really don’t know how many people survive.

    this info is very useful, It's become more clear that life for me in the UK is just economically unfeasible. I let out my one bedroom flat for more than the average wage in Mauritius, while living with my parents to save up. I could pay off the mortgage right now but it still leaves me at square one because the inflation here means that I'm always out of reach of being able to buy a house.
    It would be nice to know about expat groups for various hobbies and social stuff, are there people out there interested in stuff like model engineering, radio controlled aircraft, painting/drawing, paragliding, sailing etc. Its one thing moving to Mauritius to escape the UK but is there enough intellectual stuff going on to keep me sane out there?

    • @LucyLeheilleix
      @LucyLeheilleix  3 года назад +4

      I think as long as one can get off the island from time to time, you'd be fine here. There are expat groups on facebook and online like expat Mauritius where you can definitely meet people. There is good sailing and paragliding for sure :)

    • @pmbnet
      @pmbnet 3 года назад

      You can fly your small plane clockwise around the island, then anti-clockwise if you get bored of that. LoL, small island life suites me just fine. I can find copious amounts of intelligence on RUclips. I did see they have a R/C car racing club on tarmac. So there must be a R/C model plane club somewhere. I guess it will not be very regulated and you will have the freedom to fly they way you like without all the red tape rules.

    Any chance you are keen to do a parity based assessment? For example, the cost of a basket of groceries, fuel and such in Rupees and then do the Rand comparison for South Africans. Exchange rates help for those who earn their Rands in/from South Africa, but if one earns locally, what’s the true cost of living?

    • @LucyLeheilleix
      @LucyLeheilleix  Год назад

      South Africa is much cheaper for groceries (for most items). Mauritius is similar in cost to France. Most South Africans will find Mauritius to be very expensive, especially where property is involved as the rand is so weak.

    • @dagmarlong8754
      @dagmarlong8754 2 года назад +1

      They only can manage it by living with the whole family under one roof, and I mean the WHOLE family. Quite usual here. Lots of Mauritians have own property, even very often small and not really comfortable. You hardly will see young people here living on their own. So the family is pooling their income. And not to forget that they cook completely different.
      Btw. I personally don't know many Mauritians with an income of 21.000 Rs. So, especially now lots of families are struggling.

      Hi Jay. Most expats are French or South African. We know a few British expats, as well as Australian and American.
      English is spoken and is the official language, but French is by far the most utilized language.
      Lastly, yes you can buy property if it is PDS, IRS or RES. Check out edb.org for more info.

    Hi Lucy,
    I love your videos and this one is such a useful topic. But I’m getting confused and a bit anxious too. :( Is it just me or the cost of living seems to be far higher than the average salary - based on your numbers? How much would you say a family of four would need to live on? Please could you give me your thoughts on the bare minimum and also an average?
    I would really appreciate it.

    • @LucyLeheilleix
      @LucyLeheilleix  3 года назад +4

      Hi there. Perhaps confusing, but I gave the Rs21000 salary (average for locals) just to put into perspective how expensive it is here for a Mauritian earning that amount. Of course many people earn more. Some earn millions. It all depends on your job (like everywhere in the world). Based on all those prices, to live comfortably, for a family, you need about Rs150-180k per month. Everyone has different living standards though...

    • @TheZotyesz
      @TheZotyesz 3 года назад +3

      @@LucyLeheilleix Thanks Lucy! So with the 15 % income tax applied this would mean 175.000-210.000 Rupees per month which suggest salaries around 80-110.000 Rupees for each parent. Usually it's Rs1000 per day for a small car (1000 - 1300 cc), which makes you Rs30K for a month. But since you are renting for a whole month, they'll rent it with a reduction for say Rs20K (or 15K in case of Lucy) ... Instead of going through a big agency (Hertz, ABC, etc), find the best deal on Facebook!
