Hi guys as a Mauritian I don't have anything against tourists or foreigners- indeed our economy need them. What I don't agree is a small group of local business people making huge profits selling our land to foreigners. 15 years ago it was very difficult for a foreigner to buy a property in Mauritius but now it seems to be common practice. Our land is very small and I doubt in a few years time young mauritians will be able to afford buying land!!! We import nearly every foodstuff frm abroad wasn't it more important for the local businesses to invest in these kind of development? instead of being allowed to sell our land like that!
All over the world the price of housing has skyrocketted and it has nothing to do with foreigners. Be grateful that expats come to Mauritius and thanks to them thousands of people are able to feed their families.
the question now is what can you do as an individual about it? Next what does the government say about this? I think it's not just an economic problem but also a political problem.
What is worse is the crazy prices they are selling these houses for. I'm married to a Mauritian and we could buy some land and build the same type of house considerably cheaper. These developers are just ripping off foreigners who know no better and, as you say, pushing out the local Mauritians.
