I just skated last weekend at my kiddo’s 13th party for the first time in 43 years. I think I loved it more than I did when I was a kid. The last time I skated I took a pretty bad fall and broke my arm. I’m 50 now and will be investing in wrist guards and some tailbone protection, but I’m hooked and I’m all in. I’m so grateful for you, Dirty. I LOVE watching your videos and I feel your love and passion for skating. You are helping me to build confidence. This is priceless information for me. I’m 41 years old and haven’t really skated much since I was a teenager. I learned very quickly that it’s not like riding a bike. I feel like I have completely started from scratch. I thought I could just jump back in to it with a pricey pair of skates (roller blades) like I use to wear as a kid. I’m now convinced that I need to swallow my pride and buy a pair of skates like the ones featured in this video and work my way back up.

I bought my Fame skates in January of this year. Skated on them 70+ times between January and October. They were definitely an improvement over rentals for a few reasons but mostly that I could adjust them to my liking. I also replaced the bearings and wheels in August with Bones reds bearings and Rollerbones Elites 103A 62MM that gave a much better roll. The only problem I had with the Fames is the eyelets near the top started ripping out. That could be because I was tying them too tight and I had my trucks set too tight. Overall they were good skates for the money. Ive recently bought Riedell 120 as an upgrade and they are very nice skates. Thank you Dirty for this channel I have been watching since the restart of my skating journey in November of 2021 after 33 years. Im 49 now and when I did skate back in the day, I wasnt good lol. Now I can skate backwards and do thing I never thought I would do on skates!!

Thanks to this video I just received a pair of Sure-Grip Boardwalks today (pushing 50 and back to skating after 36 years out of a rink). My feet are picky and I figured they wanted/deserved the suede as opposed to the Fames, but this video got me in the right ballpark and after skating them for 2.5 hours today, I'm ABSOLUTELY in LOVE!! Also, thanks to so many of your OTHER videos, today's skate was not just fun, but also 'productive' from a 'working on specific things' POV. I skated as a kid, with no formal instruction and have just been 're-figuring things out' on my own up until the last week or two when I found these videos. Today, I was specifically thinking about weight transfer, down with the butt, up with the gut, keeping all my snacks in line, etc. I was also able to get my kids started on some backwards skating. All this for free (or a few ad rolls)?!?!? Amazing. I'mma have to pick up some merch. Thank you so much for all you've done and continue to do.

I understand Sure Grips sells excellent skates/boots, but keep in mind, if you have a narrow foot/heel, Sure Grips only come in medium and wide widths--they tend to run wide.
When I started skating 100 years ago, I wore Chicago's until they literally fell apart off of my feet. Now I wear Riedells primarily because they come in narrow width. If you have the opportunity and and you're serious about getting into the sport, go to an independent pro-skate shop, try on different models at different price points and see which ones feel good on your feet. Also, if you select a boot that can be used for figure skating, expect a "break in" time for the boot to mold to your feet and ankles. You can't enjoy skating if your feet hurt. Good luck!!

I love love love that my skates are authentic retro but I'm finally realising that the weight of the solid steel plate and trucks are probably contributing to my struggle to and thus fear of anything that requires lifting my feet off the ground (I have been practicing a few years, it's not going away). Def going to look into where I can get these in Canada 👍

I'm in NJ. My 1st skate was the Riedell Jam Skates with the 120 Hockey Boot with an aluminum plate, jam plug, and ABEC- 9 bearings. I swapped the wheels out for a pair of red Rollerbones 101a wheels. I haven't skated in almost 10 years and still have these skates. I went skating the past week, and one of my feet hurt and one of my legs! Lol, now I'm looking at some Moxi skates with the padded suede boots. 1st skates were about $200 back in 2006/2007, and the Moxi skates I'm looking at are about $230... but I have seen $1000 skates. Unfortunately, there are like no skate shops anymore in NJ that I know of.... so I have to order online.

  • @vm1776

the skates you recommended have a nylon plate. Doesn't that mean that they are not as strong as an aluminum plate and are a risk for heavier skaters? I need to replace my skates due to changes in my feet after foot surgery (need a wider boot). I'm used to skating with aluminum plate, so I'm not worried about the weight of the skate. I am concerned about the fact that I weigh twice as much as I did when I bought my last pair of skates however.

Hello! I’ve been skating for about a year now and I’m planning on buying some accessories for my skates. I’m not so sure about the stoppers I want to buy though. The stoppers I’m thinking of getting are star shaped, and I’ve never used abnormally shaped stoppers.
