I'm looking into my second pair now. I think the best thing I ever did in buying the first pair was doing research on what I wanted. It's okay to talk to other skaters and ask them about their skates or wheels. The best review you can get on a product is from someone using said product. Don't be afraid to take your time because if you buy something and it sucks, it'll prolong your journey and could possibly give you a less than ideal experience as beginner and like Dirrty Deb, I don't want that for you. Happy Skating yall.

@@hotrockfitness I personally use Riddell, that's just my preference. But also in terms of affordability and availability, it's a solid choice in general.
Talk to other skaters and see what they're using and also check with your local rinks if they have a skate shop and see what brands they sell. I love my Riddells, but I've seen skaters be successful with other brands too.

From someone who has been skating for 45+ years, (Yes, I still skate at the rink twice a week!) Debbie's advice is spot on! Once you have determined what type of skate you think is a match for you, go ahead and spend as much as you possibly can on them without going hungry. Now that I am older, and cost is not a factor anymore, I have put together my dream skates and realized that my abilities have been unleashed! I never realized that my equipment had been holding me back for so many years. The best equipment will hold its value too. If later you decide you need something different, better, or whatever, you will be able to sell them no problem. Currently I am skating Riedell 395 boot, Powerdyne Arius Platinum plates, Roller Bones turbo wheels, Bones Swiss bearings for my speed skates. For my Rhythm skates: Betty Lytle boots styled by Hyde, Arius plates, Sure-Grip Varsity Plus wheels and Swiss bearings. Both sets worth every penny!

I appreciate this video. I have been skating on Moxi Beach Bunny for a year and a half, I will be using this video for my next pair of skates. I do love my Beach Bunnies though, the only thing I wish they had was better trucks. Also I do agree that there is more of a learning curve with the plates that aren’t nylon, but still entry level.

I just bought and skated on my 2nd pair of beach bunnies. After skating on my 1st beach bunnies for 2 and a half years, the heel has finally started to come apart from the boot. I forgot how stiff they are at first, however, I love how they eventually became so comfortable and worn in. Looking forward to breaking in the 2nd pair!! I also have a pair of boardwalks, twice as expensive and not as comfortable for me. Have fun!!

They'll come back. I just pulled my inlines out of a dusty closet for the first time in at least 15 years and immediately did 1.5 miles in them. My feet hurt, and it took a bit to do more than one or two strides, but I didn't fall at all. Two days later I went to the rink and jumped on a pair of rental quads for the first time in probably 20 years. That night I bought a pair of Riedell R3s to start roller derby.

With bullseye toe stops, you can also take them out completely and replace them with jam plugs when you get more advanced. Jam plugs are NOT meant for stopping, but can help you prevent scratching the floor. I recommend jam plugs if you will mostly skate in skating rinks and are able to utilize other stopping techniques.

I've skated since I was a preschooler. But I've never actually bought my own skates. My dad always bought them for me (he managed a rink when I was kid). Well, the last time my dad bought me skates was for my 13th birthday. He bought them with some room for me to grow in them. My feet never grew so I still have space in the toe. Those skates are what I've worn for 18 years (on and off). Some odd years ago I picked up a pair from a garage sale that were more nostalgic than anything. They are the same skate/boot as my first speed skates (circa 10 years old). They are SP 205s. So I've been wearing those the past few years. But I do believe a new boot will be in my future. Thank you for this!!!!

The best advice I personally got for derby skates was that if you get an expensive "forever" boot, it should fit like a sock, not like a shoe. Didn't understand at first but with my new boots I 100% know what that feels like now.
Also, if possible it's best to try on skates before buying them. If you don't have a skate shop that sells quad skates in a 13hr drive radius like me, ask other skaters if you can try theirs on. I wore a boot a whole size too big for 2,5 years and my feet where in agony. I slipped a whole centimeter forward any time I jumped on my toe stops. Now I have a better fitting boot and that specific pain is no more. But I was still definitely happy with my R3s as they gave me an opportunity to get into the sport without having to spend an insane amount of money yet

There are certain things in life where you can pretty much guarantee that the more you pay, the bigger the difference in performance. This seems to be the case with most sports equipment as a whole category. You don't pay for brand name with subtle differences (like with fashion clothing or hair products, for example.) You pay for features and performance. This video is super helpful. Now I know my skates suck and I can do better. Can't wait to go shopping!! Thank you for the detailed information. I got the Riddell suede for 350. I wish I would have saw the video before I bought those. It's been about 25 years since I've been skating. So I figured hell get the best, lol.

I skated derby with my heeled skates, that’s the type of skate I was used too. I skated roller hockey on inlines no heel.

I have 4 pairs of skates. I have Candi Girl in the light blue and Burgundy and they're gorgeous but I have small but wider feet and they hurt. I'm trying to stretch them out. Next I got Moxi Panthers and they feel alot better but still make me sore after a while in one spot. But that one spot is enough after a couple hours to make you go insane. Still breaking those in too... THEN I bought some Chayas. And it's like they were HEAVEN SENT. Comfortable as a sneaker straight outta the box. No issues whatsoever, no matter how long they're on. I have the Chaya Melrose Elite and the Chaya vintage Sunset Beach and both feel AMAZING. My daughter has Chayas too (melrose Deluxe), and says hers are really comfortable. Also I was able to change out the toe stops on the Chaya Sunset Beach pair, which has a fixed toe stop, and I put some yellow star toe stops on. (With blue pulse wheels and yellow laces, and have a patch on each skate with red, yellow and blue to match). The Rollerstuff brand star shaped toe stops come in both kinds. Got em from an etsy shop. I actually have stars on both my Chayas and on my Panthers too. (I have several different sets of wheels, toe stops, laces, lace patches and charms for all my pairs so when I want a new look I have options instead of buying another pair of skates lol. (Although i would love that pair of Chaya Premium berry red theyve got up on the wall there, lol.) Maybe later :) The different toe stops wouldn't work on my daughter's Melrose Deluxe though, unless I'm able to find a longer bolt. For some reason the bolt won't reach on 2 different kinds of other toe stops I've tried. ANYWAY just some advice for yall with a little wider feet, Chaya is the one 😉

Just got a pair of blue & burgundy CandiGrl skates myself but haven't tried them yet. Thanks for the recommendation on the Chayas if these don't work out. I'm 52 and haven't skated in years. 😬😁

I bought a pair of skates to learn in. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money because I wasn’t sure if I was gonna stick with it. Paid $38 for them on Amazon. They’re not the best quality, but I was surprised they’re not that bad either. The trucks can be adjusted. They have nylon plates. They don’t have that much cushion on the soles, or around the boot, which sucks. So I put insoles in them and that helped a bit. They were advertised as indoor/outdoor skates, but they’re only for indoors because I can feel everything on the ground. But I have to say, they’re really not that bad. When I feel like I’ve gotten better at skating, I’ll get some better quality ones. Thanks for the information. I’ll know better what to look for on my next pair.

I have a really cheap pair of skates bc I didn’t want to invest if I didn’t even like skating. They were $70 on zappos, and now I know why haha. Now that I’m getting into it, I need comfy ones! The pinch around my toes is SO PAINFUL I can barely skate without needing to sit down. Thank you! 🥰

I skate on the BTFL Scarlett and they are so comfortable!!! New wheels and bearings make em even better. I'll upgrade to the Moxie Jack if I ever need to, but I think my setup will hold me over for a long time!

So the thing about the trucks, and toe stops... Can't you start with a cheaper skate that's got a good boot, and upgrade the trucks later on for something with more flex, and a better toe stop?

I love this video. I have probably watched it 8 times. I can't get enough of it. I'm still searching for skates because it's been over 50 years since I last skated and I want to make a good decision. I've heard you say that the Riedell fame is a good starter skate. I've also heard you say you would like people to get into suede because of comfort. If I have $300 plus to spend, what would you suggest?

Hey there! I just got a pair of Sure grip boardwalk suede skates. I’m SO excited! However, they really are tough on my inner ankle bone. They fit everywhere else, but seem very stiff in general. I ordered some neoprene ankle sleeves, so hopefully that will help, but I’m curious if you or anyone knows if this particular skate is heat moldable or not. Can’t seem to find a direct answer on Google or their website!
