I started roller skating around 1970 or so. I don't remember all the numbers being used back then. When I started taking dance lessons I ordered new wheels because mine were a bit slippery for the edges needed when dancing with mum partner. I asked my instructor what kind I needed and he order new wheels that were in my price range. They worked much better. I have not skated for over 40 years now and am buying new skates soon. Can't wait to get them to hit the rink and the outdoor park in my area. I thank you for explaining the different types of wheels and the number system used. Now I can make a better informed purchase. I bought some old Riedell roller skates at a vintage shop and the wheels were pretty worn in but I decided to just roll with it lol I’ve been skating for a couple weeks now (outdoors only) and I kept wondering why my wheels got stuck to tiniest of rocks & cracks!? I was telling myself that it’s just me because I’m new but then I thought that wheels actually do matter so... that’s what lead me here, this was very informative thank you so much! I just ordered some new outdoor wheels & tools!!

This explains so much. Was doing fine at the rink but having trouble at the park. I was planning to skate the Long Beach harbor but now I know I need outdoor wheels. Your vids are awesome

Thank you soo much. I have watched quite a few of your videos learned a lot. My skates came with Atom Pulse Lite then I also bought Radar Energy 57 both are 78A. Plus Rollerbone bearings 8mm So I will get harder wheels I have wood floors at home. I haven't skated in 30yrs on rentals & Chicago smh... It was suggested after my knee replacement a year ago.

Great video! Not suitable for my purposes today but I have it saved for when the time comes. I personally haven't skated in a million years but remember how much joy it brought me so I am getting ready to introduce my grandkids to the activity for the first time at Christmas which is what brought me to your video. I am trying to decide on what skates to buy them and it seems the options are nearly endless (so much different than way way way back when I was skating!!) and I just don't know how I am going to be able to make a decision. I have become so overwhelmed not only from the infinite number of options but also by my deep desire for them to fall in love with skating. I am trying to ensure that I have done everything I can to give them a proper foundation to get started with because I know that if they have a negative experience right at the start then there is very little chance for them to give it another try later in their lives. Skating is not overly popular in our area so future exposure is doubtful. I am hopeful that they will find skating to be super fun, a great way to exercise & build strength and a very useful activity to relieve stress and anxiety. So again, thank you for the informational video and I hope I have a need for the information in the coming months.

When all the major rinks closed down in the 90s in New Zealand I could only skate outdoors, sometimes with the rollerbladers, I started to use skateboard wheels because that's all I could find, as they wore down thinner I'd find other old skateboards and steal their wheels, generally I use fairly hard, large skateboard wheels but they are crap on really rough concrete and probably need some slightly softer hybrids.

Thanks, that was good. I have a better understanding now. Yes, I'm a beginner, I just got some Miami Rollerbone wheels with an 80a rating, so it looks like I didn't mess up for an OK beginner outside experience. I dont think I need a spacer in the wheel, do i? I've seen some mention of spacers but I'm thinking they are for skateboards? Like I said, beginner!

Wheels for every occasion! Meanwhile, my inline blade friends seem to use the same wheels for everything, simultaneously more agile everywhere and better on rough outdoor paths

That's because inlines are very different than quads. This video does not apply to inlines

Yo ! Dirty ! Have really really been enjoying your courses , my daughters and me , we just love skating on quads , we luv it we luv it we luv it ! You rock , and no shame or fear on my part , I take them skating , we are learning to skate and getting better every day . Lol , I got a pair of VNLA blue skates because I liked how they look , this was before watching your videos . After replacing the bumpers and wheels I can skate pretty ok for an old school rookie on the completely wrong skate for me , however it challenged me , and I have learned and I have made them work and I am all the better for it.

LOL!!! It's me, Krisstofer from the Crazy World of Krisstofer... I'm laughing, because as I was watching this, I noticed the sound quality... I was like, "I can't hear you dirty!" and I was trying to troubleshoot my computer, turing my speakers up over 50, only to find out, it's actually because this was before you got that good mic! It's really fun to come back to these older vlogs and see the progress we make as creators. Proof that I need to continue trucking on with my channel. Just like skating... We all have to start somewhere. I was all set to edit my videos, only to find out that the sound cut out on my footage... So, I just realized that every time that I go to film, I need to conduct a sound check before I call CUT!!! LOL!!!
LOL... I've been tryna kill myself looking for the durometer of the phenolic wheels... and you just said it here, "so hard, they don't even have a hardness rating..." LOL... However, when you conduct a list to compare and contrast, it's difficult for me, when all fields are not filled in. I just gotta roll with it.

I had them big ol outdoor wheels on my skates for years. I recently got some roll line dance wheels. And oh my goodness my turns are so much better. I was over here trying to do a three turn into a one foot spin and just couldn’t do it. Got my new wheels and bam! Got it 🙌🏽🙌🏽. I was so happy when I turned like 3 times around. 🤯🤯🤯
