Safety is absolutely sexy, and as an almost 30 yr old woman just learning idgaf if my neighbors judge my (over)protective gear lmao. I fell on my 3rd day and I totally would’ve quit if I didn’t have all my safety gear on. It gives me confidence

Being 53 and starting to skate now is very scary. I go out dressed like a toddler with knee, elbow, wrist pads and helmet. I feel foolish but I would feel more foolish hurting myself at this age! My goal is just be comfortable on the skates for now. Then after that, I want to be able to skate backwards like a pro :)

This resonates so much with me...and I cannot thank you (and the mozzies...I feel your anguish here in Brisbane, Australia) enough. In March 2021 I was coward-punched in my face by a druggie neighbour and needed an intense facial reconstruction. (I joke and say my face is more expensive than Kim Kardashian as I have 3 titanium plates holding it together). I could have died. I have post-traumatic vertigo and a blown pupil in my right eye. I used to roller skate during primary, school high school and college. Just for fun.
My reason is I love the feeling. I want my freedom back and to feel the ocean breezes while I dork my way through re-learning the art of falling with style.
Your genuine honesty and unapologetic advice is just what I needed right now.
PS. Is 'protective gear' a pillow strapped to my butt? I'm 5ft 10 and need all the help I can get. Lolz.

My biggest struggle is feeling sturdy and confident on my feet to handle when my balance is disrupted. A couple years ago, I was at a rink where someone ran into me and shoved me down. When I fell, I broke my elbow in 2 places. I really miss skating, but I’m so scared to get back into it

    • @MystiqueRisingSun
      @MystiqueRisingSun 4 месяца назад

If you still haven't gotten back out there yet...
It's much like riding a bike. We fall, we get scared, we "give up"...but soon enough, we want to try again...and will do anything to protect ourselves until we're more balanced.
So...Pads. ALL the pads! If your rink has a wood floor, a helmet isn't "absolutely necessary", but if it'll make you feel more secure, go for it. Definitely elbow and knee pads, and wrist guards.
Next, look into "BumSavers" (name brand, but there are cheaper versions, too)...they mainly protect your tailbone and outer thighs, but they have models ranging from "short shorts" to full leg with - basically - shock absorbers sewn into them. Some have thin padding and can be worn under most clothes, others have much thicker padding but can only be worn over clothes or on their own, get whichever version and length that suits what you feel you need.
Last...look on Amazon - or local skateboard shops if you have any near you. SkaterTrainers - all one word - are little pieces of rubber that go over your wheels and prevent the wheels from rolling.
Once you have everything gathered, get on your skates. In your house!
Stand up, first on carpet. Hold onto a dresser, the TV stand, or your bathroom counter, whatever is easiest in whatever room you have carpeting (or a rug) in.
Practice shifting your weight from side to side, lifting the non-load bearing foot just a few centimeters off the ground.
When you feel you're ready, move to the kitchen, bathroom, a hallway, whichever is available. Throw on the SkaterTrainers and just stand.
Again, practice shifting your weight from foot to foot while lifting one leg off the floor at a time.
Once you feel comfortable and stable, then - and only then - take off the SkaterTrainers and repeat, starting with wearing your skates on carpet, then moving to a smoother area.
DON'T rush the process. Give it as much time as you feel you need to until you're ready to get back to the rink...just don't forget all your safety gear when you go.
      YOU GOT THIS!!!

Actually, if you want to get into derby, most leagues will teach skating "experts" down to beginners who've never even stood up on wheels before.
That being said, skating is skating. There are a few different things you'll need to learn for derby, but skating in and of itself is the same mechanics no matter what form you choose to do.

    I'm deffinetely an EGO skater.
First thing i started to learn? Stopping? Nope. Turns? Naaah. Balance? Heeeell naaaah.
I got straight into going backwards. I figured it out even with super tight wheels - which was extremely hard. My main idea was "Uh-huh everyone says they can't go backwards even after 6 months-year. So if i learn i will be so much cooler than them. My progress will skyrocket!"
So i did learn it 😂 And here's the fun part: I can go backwards while not being able to controll my body at all.
So all i do now is balance exercises. And ofcourse i still don't know how to stop 😂

Agl, seen a super thicc sexy female skater on my IG reels last night and thought damn, I need get in on this. I used to skate as a kid (I sucked back then too) but the local rink was always hype. My dad was a phenom when it came to this. Fast forward 25 years and I bout to venture into it FOR REAL! Already watched your “how to skate in 7 minutes”…”skates on a budget for beginners”…THIS…and next will be the safety one. After learning how to ride a motorcycle and getting into bikelife, I see A LOT of similarities when it come to patience and confidence. When you said “information overload” I gasped because I believed that’s a REALLY BIG reason people have a tough time learning ANYTHING. So yeah, like you said…you’re trying to get as many people skating as possible, well add another one. After learning patience and understanding I won’t always succeed on the first try, it’s a lot easier to learn things (just like I did with motorcycles) Even if I don’t stick with it, I’m gonna at least know how to do the basics (just in case I go on a date I won’t look like a total goof) 😂
