I turned my neighbor on this last time and she absolutely loves them! She is originally from Maryland and has been making due with whatever her husband can find in the grocery store.
I love to wake up at 50 yrs old and be able to click on RUclips and learn something new. Very helpful video and I appreciate it. Thank you sir wolfepit.
My late father was born and raised on the Choptank River in Cambridge, MD and blue shell crabs and oyster fritters were his favorite eats on the planet. Although blue shell crabs are certainly not as plentiful in R.I. than they are in MD he taught me how to crab with line and a chicken neck tied at the end for bait. Those critters are very smart and it takes great skill to catch.them.
Maryland Blue Crabs are one of my all time favorite foods! Fortunately I live where crabs are readily available, but not everyone has that luxury. Have no fear, you can have crabs anytime and anywhere you want (live or steamed) shipped to your door in 24 hours thanks to https:www.iLoveCrabs.com !
I have literally cleaned thousands of crabs, and I’ve never once used a hammer. But unfortunately I developed an allergy to crabs when I was about 17😢😢. I have an uncle that lives on the Chesapeake Bay, and he’s big on fishing, and hunting, a we used to go up there every year, and go crabbing. Usually getting 8 bushels of crabs. Newspapers! That’s what we used. This is the first time I’ve ever even heard of crab paper.
It's not a hammer... it's a mallet. Crab paper is simply paper bags which is used in restaurants but newspaper works just fine... but you haven't literally cleaned thousands of crabs if you stopped at 17. There's no reason to lie about that.
I live on the Easter Shore in MD near Princess Anne, and I found the best hookup on crabs, live or steamed, caught fresh that morning. Saturday I got 2 dozen #1 males that we're pretty heavy crabs for $60 a dozen live. They were $10 xtra if they steam em. That's incredibly cheap for really good crabs.
Bit having had crab before. Would've liked to have seen how to bust them open and eat and also if there was any internal or taste difference between the pre and non steamed crabs. Still dig your vids. Hey, new hand? Who was that?
I'n Australia, when we catch mudcrabs it's pretty common practice to pop them in the freezer for half and hour before cooking, just because the crab may be dead does not mean it's no good. I'd say if the crabs been dead for more then 24 for hours and has not been refrigerated it's a no go, but anything less then that is fair game
I'm from MD and we steam our crabs then dip them in real butter (melted) or vinegar mixed with Old Bay seasoning. ^_^ Rest assured, a crab feast is no crab feast without a lot of Corona or Heineken to accompany the meal.
Man, Larry. You make me want to move back to norwich, CT, where I used to catch these guys wild, fresh out of the Thames river, whenever I wanted to eat them, there's no limit or licence required by CT, so I can have as much as I can eat! My favorite seasoning is Chesapeake Bay crab seasoning/apple cider vinegar+water... Now I live 80 miles from the coast so its still pricy to obtain them, it's also a "crab shoot" as they're not always in with the tide... But you really make me want to go get some. Thankyou for reminding me of the pleasure of fresh, live seafood.
My wife and I did a sea food boil with blue crabs mussels and a mollusks that lives in conch shells. We got all the sea food fresh from our local oriental food store. We bought it Saturday but we boiled Sunday that said the blue crap that was in the Refrigerator for 24 hours not sure who lived or died I just put them in the sink and sprayed loop warm water on them and they all perked up!
Never heard of dipping crabs in Apple Cider Vinegar. Is that why they give me extra seasoning, when I get Blue Crabs in Va Bch? They sell their own cocktail sauce at the place I get my crabs. Then, I take it and add mayo, horseradish, garlic, lemon & Tabasco sauce, and make my own crab dipping sauce. I'll have to try the Apple Cider Vinegar this summer.
BU3 D where do you live? I currently live in Annapolis, Md and the prices are outrageous. However, I’m originally from southern Maryland and still have some connections for much better prices. Edit: I drive all the way down there to get them. A bushel (although mixed) is less than $100.
Tell me about it ! I live in South Louisiana, where like in Maryland crabs are plentiful. They got so expensive lately that I was forced to put them on my "do not buy list" I hate to think what he paid for those skinny crabs. Yes, I know they were skinny from one quick glance. Crabs with white faces are always skinny. If they don't have yellow faces then FUGGITABOUTIT ! Rusty brown underbellies are even better and fatter.
Just put them all in a bucket of salted tap water. The dormant will start moving, the dead won't. Dealing with live crabs is not that hard by hand, but you can use tongs as well.
First time I ever had cold crabs was in Virginia. At a little hole in the wall out on Willoughby Spit near Norfolk. All I remember was how big they where 5 where already a dozen
Glad i live in maryland. The maryland Chesapeake crab is in every seafood restaurant. Some taste good, some need improvement. After all, crabs are better in a seafood bucket
I have never cooked live crabs before.. i was curious as 2 why you have to make sure there alive before cooking? Do they give you food poisoning or do they just taste awful?
I love it 🤣🤣🤣 you can get crabs from anywhere you live in United States.......isnt that the truth. These are the good kind of crabs you want to get boys and girls. Looks delicious bro.
I don't get the seasoning thing. Since you won't be eating their exo skeletons. Little of that seasoning will get into the actual meat. Though I'm sure it smells good while cooking.

On one hand I feel bad for the crabs. On the other is a crab mallet.
Just like i said in your last crab steamin vid. Ya shoulda whipped them in the air fryer 😂

You wouldn't have enough room to put enough crabs in. You need a big pot to feed real crab eaters. I can eat almost a dozen of the big ones myself.

You use the complimentary mallets to smash them into a paste. Then mix the paste with melted butter and drink it with a straw (not provided).
How much they paid you for this? Sounds like an infomercial!

Oh if he uploads another one in the next few weeks I'm moving on.

I live in Ohio, & thinking of buying already steamed crabs. Can I put some in my freezer, when they arrive?
Steaming in beer and vinegar without water works well.
I’m wondering why you add apple cider vinegar? I’ve never heard of this. Does it have to do with taste or killing any bacteria ?
