A couple of tips from an Alaskan fisherman after watching this video: 1. Poly line floats, which is a hazard to your and other boats, use leaded line, like that on his first pot, which sinks so only the buoy is on the surface. If all you have is poly line, you can attach a lead weight to the line so it remains below the surface. 2. The best distance between your and other buoys is that which ensures the lines don't tangle. No one likes having to pull up two pots at once when one of those pots isn't yours. 3. Drop pot in first, then let the line out until you feel the pot hit the bottom. This ensures you have enough line for the depth regardless of your depth finder.
"Drop pot in first, and then let the line out until the pot hits the bottom" - I though that this would work, but ofcourse i found out that current also needs to be accounted for. the current pushed my buoy over, so the line was going about a 45 degree angle up from the pot instead of straight up... since this distance to the surface was greater and also greater than my line, the buoy submerged by about 20 feet! i was able to recover it a few days later at low water slack. lesson learned!
Easy rule of thumb. Add 20’ to your line to account for current up to 100’ then adjust to 20% extra of depth to line ratio. high current areas use a double float and even up to 30% extra line. If the float goes under it will soak up water and compress and not come back up. Use two that way if on goes down you will still have a float at surface. Also crab move with water temp and food source. Weather makes dirty water, means camo for movement and brings in food particles. Also Dungy like sandy/mud bottom mix, prime habitat.

HI Matt! I am glad you are taking care of safety brother, life vest is a 100% must at all time (solo or not solo). I About 1 year ago I was driving my boat into the harbor with about -15 Celsius, I removed my life vest early, while stepping out of the boat I slipped off the docks into the sea.. near death experience. If it was now for my navy friend I would not be able to watch your beautiful content brother! Just stay safe while having a good time.
This was a nice experiment. I like that you mix up your videos and are creating new content all the time! Keep up the great ideas and all the best with your surgery! Hope you have a speedy recovery! :)
Great video with all the safety stuff. I like your trap recovery system. I've got two suggestions. Make the support tall enough for your traps to clear the railing. Make the extension ale to accept motorized top section. This keeps it short in length. Number two, allow the top motorized section to pivot into the boat. A hole drilled through a tab, to lock the top section in place during rough times.
I love this man. Not a busy day, not a single person in sight. Yet when he launches he has the decency to hitch his boat towards the back of the dock/launch area. It shows courtesy, which I feel like is a dying art, unfortunately.
Such a pleasure always watching your vids. I was in love with Rex Hunt as a kid but with every video you make, you get closer to my heart! I'm sure the surgery will go well. Best wishes from Romania!
Thanks for always checking the sizes man, I can't tell you how many people I see keeping under sized crab. I absolutely love crab and it ticks me off when people keep small crab, contributing to their decline.

That was very impressive just pulling in all those crabs like that. Even though you didn't limit out, atleast you had wonderful time out there and that's all that matters. Would love to see more future crab catching videos, man.
Great video! A couple of suggestions, if possible remove all fishing rod holders, trip hazards or other possible obstructions that the line could get caught on. Always try to keep the line in front of you, not behind you. Be careful not to stand in the loose loops of rope. If something ever gets hung up, just let go of the rope. It's not worth losing a finger/hand or getting pulled over if something gets hung up on the bottom, in the motor, etc... Always keep a knife in reach. It's best to mount one to your life jacket so if you fall in or get yanked overboard for any reason you still have access to it... Be safe out there👍😊...
I experienced just what you said on a algae ramp in WA. My truck slid into the water and it was totaled from salt water damage. I had in park plus the emergency brake. Lesson learned the hard way.

Best of luck to you with your surgery and a speedy and complete recovery 🙏🏼 Tide changes and windshifts also cause those polylines to float. I had to drive around them on a few occasions. Thankfully with clear conditions I was able to see them. I bought a Discover Bay Hauler because it is tall and raises the pots and traps up over my gunwale, I have quite a few years behind me on you. No lifting heavy pots for me 😉
Years back here in Portland Oregon, I was a semi driver working around the airport. Only one day before I was going with the family to the coast for a week, I happened to notice two VERY familiar boxes on the side of the road. Recognizing these as seafood boxes, I pulled over and tossed them in the back of the truck. When I finally opened them I was very pleased to see restaurant quality (cleaned) Dungeness crab haves carefully stacked in each box. As I recall each box weighed about 30 pounds, with some of that weight as ice packs. Needless to say, EVERYONE pigged out on Dungeness crab for the next week! Best find ever.
Good luck with your surgery! You are an inspiration about the care in everything you do and may you have a speedy recovery and we will see you going back to doing the things you love!
Cool job. Many years ago, my grandparents had a camp on the Bay River NC. After a wonderful breakfast of home made buttermilk biscuits with apple jelly.. My grandma would give my brother and a bushel basket with half thawed chicken with a roll of twine and several large weights. My brother would crab net. Once on the dock we’d work fast to set up our lines (take a chicken neck and wrap it with twine, leaving a foot or so and tie on a weight. Then we’d throw the crab rigs about 8 feet tie up the other end on the pier posts. Never took long to get tight lines. One would pull the twine slowly back to the pier and the other would carefully dip net and boom, we’d have a big one go into the barrel. Granddad taught us how to pick up a crab
BlackRockBrewing - I hear you man. This is the first video by Fisherman's Life that I've ever seen, so I don't know the entirety, nor even from whence he hails, but I subscribed, so I'm sure I'll find out. He seems be following the rules and honestly, I didn't see him do too much stupid or anything illegal. I don't even know what the law is wherereverer, but non-commercially, crabbing for Blueclaw Crabs here in the Northeast, we always return the females, even when keeper size, as it just makes good business sense to do, for next year. He seems to always be wearing a life jacket and has a wrist band kill switch to his boat engine, so if for some reason he gets knocked overboard, hopefully he'll be able to swim back to his boat. The only thing that scared me was when he said he didn't have his knife. It's called a 'pocket' knife, for a reason. I keep two, one in either front pocket. One to use, one to loose, or one to quick hand a rookie, who didn't have his when asked, which was enough to get you fired, where I worked. One reminder to everyone, whenever you 'get into' anything, make sure you have your knife on the inside, of sleeping bags, tents. When in a Hazmat suit, Survival suit, Fire fighting gear or the like, you should always have one knife in the inside pocket, and one in the outside pocket. Don't forget either. There have been two times that I nearly died because I was stupid enough to forget one or the other. So far, I've never forgotten either again (and it's been about 20 years). As well, the overall production qualities of F'sL, being basically a One Man Band, in terms of actually recording anyway, is quite high. Clearly enjoyable. As a viewer, I feel as if I am a minor helper, just taking it all in, trying to be both helpful when needed, but out of the way when not; which is a rare talent that Captains often have, when serving as a deckhands, which they often do, to my surprise. On most commercial jobs I've ever been on, if there were six deckhands, there were at least eight or ten Captain's licenses, just laying around, as if litter, altho there were probably more, if you asked seriously. Often times, who was assigned the 'Captaincy', drew the short straw. The Captain, the one who is ultimately responsable for every facet of every second of need of every person onboard (let's say, just 30 people, not counting other life-forms), all for the need that you, as the Captain, are tasked to sign every piece of paper that leaves your ship, and often, on receipt of those that arrive, to suffer that $4 boost in hourly pay. Please see. Money is not usually what this deal is all about. Some fall to Captaincy, to gain a mark of respect, for some tiny bits of their 'Mother's Love' (or whoever..., Oh, man. Nah, I'm not gonna step there. You'll have to do it yourself, or hire someone to, be you, in essence.

Easily my favorite channel on RUclips! Your positivity is contagious. Praying the surgery goes well!!
Not only do i agree with TheAlex613 when he said "Respect to this man showing how to practice safety…vehicle brakes held on, life jacket on, careful about reefs…this kind of boating should be taught, well done sir" I would like to say it was awesome to see you respect distancing between your pots and those of others!
Thanks Matts - watching your video gives me a slight break from the worries of what's going on in our world. Wishing you a speedy recovery so you can continue to do what you love. Take care
Honest fishman have a lot of respect for you man
Yes sir. Honestly, where is this boat launch ?

Hope all goes as planned with the surgery man and you have a quick recovery. The wife and I love your content. Thanks for the tip on the 3/8 rope as well, I never think about that stuff until I am pulling my pots lol.
My wife caught alot of 9.5 inches in the third bay out near stow, Lyndhurst, Euclid, ec, Brunswick, and lake woods. You got to throw small ones away though. But I think her q cadtee had like 137 thousand 🦀. Then they came to cud and had like 4 or 5 in like three seconds off the algea grass with b and b . They didn't even charge but they had more work. Thanks for video 📹 yall. Hope Sergey go wel
See I love RUclipsrs like this. I support videos where you get taught a skill or trade and you put in a lot of arm work in the process. I don't understand RUclipsrs who post videos of them reviewing first class on an airplane trip. Like WTF???
This guy is awesome. Look at all the works he's doing all by himself. That is crazy. Lol. I'd love to go crabbing with someone like this.
Dont you worry about that dang surgery if I can go through 4 major ones and chemotherapy and I'm still here!!! You got this man just focus on how you will recover from it you got lots of prayers for you and yours keep your head up!! You are one tough SOB this will be easy and you'll be out fishing again super quick !!!!
Thanks bro. I just had it and I'm doing well!!
Great video, Mr. Butter! You were the first of the catch n cook, luv em all!
Thank you for sharing. A simplified version of The Deadliest Catch without all the drama
My first time seeing you and although I am not a fisherman, I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Excellent video!
Definitely have fun watching this. Thank you so much for showing this. Wish you in good health and all go well with your surgery.
So happy to see so many dungeness in Half Moon Bay. Even if most were undersized it's great to see that the stock is healthy.
This looks like Rockaway Beach and Pacifica State Beach area
Just stumbled across this video, and I'm floored by the production value of it! Outstanding!
Love the channel. Praying all goes well for your surgery. Praying for a speedy recovery.❤️
@hennepin 2020 Jesus Jesus Jesus
Well done buddy, good skills, judgement and entertainment. Worth the watch.
This was a nice experiment. I like that you mix up your videos and are creating new content all the time! Keep up the great ideas and all the best with your surgery! Hope you have a speedy recovery! :)
Dude your safely is spot on. Perfect example of a safe boater. Keep up the great videos.
Outstanding demonstration of a safe launch and boat ramp etiquette
I love this man. Not a busy day, not a single person in sight. Yet when he launches he has the decency to hitch his boat towards the back of the dock/launch area. It shows courtesy, which I feel like is a dying art, unfortunately.
Thanks for sharing! I hope your surgery goes well (whatever it is). Best to you and yours! Your safety practices are totally appreciated.
I very much enjoyed your outdoor adventure. I live in the country with a lot of land but find myself wanting to be on the water crabbing and fishing. Enjoy what you have there, it is very special.
And you did all that by yourself, I would gladly be one of your best deckhands. Great job , thank you because old man like us who can't be out there, live through what you do.
great content, thank you for actually putting the smaller ones back, not like other people ive seen.
That was an interesting video. You gave some great advice for those that go crabbing. Wishing you a successful operation and a speedy recovery.
Excellent video Bud.....Nice hard working and Honest guy.
Hoping and praying for a positive outcome with your surgery. Take care, Matts, let us know how you're doing!
matt your a good man im glad it wasnt cancer keep making videos my wife just ordered me the perch shirt you are selling cant wait to get it
Learning with Matt is almost as fun as fishing. I hope to apply this knowledge to my east coast expeditions. FISH ON!!

No talk of sea-sickness lately, must be a good sign. Love your video's Matts.
-- *_Nicely done. Thank you Fisherman's Life!_*
I love your content. I went crabbing for the first time in like 15 years because of your videos.
Very unique engineering when it came to applying the brakes for solo launches. Did like the fact that walked your boat 🚤 to the end of the dock
Great footage and Thanks 🙏
good thing you are releasing the small and female one, i am asian and we are probably will keep anything that we caught even the small one or even the babies. because here we even selling the baby crabs for snack. thank for the responsible fishing there👍🏻
It's illegal to keep anything undersized and females not worth the fines to keep them at 100.00 per illegal crab
All good advice, thank you and other good people who take the time to teach.
Awesome segment, Matt!! Thanks, man. I've been busy and haven't gotten out all season. This whetted by appetite big time. 😋😋
Great video ! You are the reason why I love Nature and Natural Resources keep it legal Dude . Love the environment . I hunt , fish even if I don't bag a big buck , catch any fish ! Just being around water it's peaceful. God bless Dude. Enjoy .
I really appreciate your honesty and following the rules.
Feel like I'm there. very calm water. I like watching your videos been watching for years.
Hope everything goes well with the surgery, wishing you a speedy recovery. too bad it was to murkey in the water that day for the underwater camera. Crazy how full the pots were!
All the best with the surgery, thanks for the video.
That was very impressive just pulling in all those crabs like that. Even though you didn't limit out, atleast you had wonderful time out there and that's all that matters. Would love to see more future crab catching videos, man.
Just being out on the water with a rod and reel in my hands. That was the life. Catching was just the cherry on top.
Love how conscientious you are about everything. Love your videos.
Amazing! Couldn't help but watch my favorite food being caught for a meal.!
I experienced just what you said on a algae ramp in WA. My truck slid into the water and it was totaled from salt water damage. I had in park plus the emergency brake. Lesson learned the hard way.
a shame it wasnt an amphibious exploring vehicle
Well said!

WOW Sorry that happened to you
Hey first time I have ever watched your video. Really enjoyed it. I learned a lot and I''m liking forward to your next video. Thank you for taking the time to make it. I also like that you are trying to wear your life vest - good example and practice for us all to follow.
Hi from Australia brother, l haven't been getting notifications, l don't know why , loved this vid , the anticipation with every net or trap l was trying to see what you had before they surfaced, leaning into my phone to see, pretty funny man, hope your surgery goes well , take care and we'll see you soon.🎣🐟🇦🇺
So nice to see so many crabs, and that the sizing rules keeps it all sustainable! Much like here in Australia
Sizing Rules are back to front, Big Crabs & Fish produce More offspring, the bigger they are the more offspring they produce, leaving the larger ones as breeding stock is more sustainable
Great channel wanna go fishing every time I see you out there. Fish on! Fish on! Baby! 😊
Hey, 100 percent with you on the solo life jacket thing....same for me. I go crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay, same concept, nowhere near as deep and no mountains. Bro, seriously don't know how you are able to pick those up with your bare hands? The East Coast blue crab would've had all your fingers bloody by now for sure. Great video.
Yes I totally agree with previous comments. About blessing this guy. On his safety procedures in place great job 🇳🇿❤️💯🇳🇿💯🇳🇿👉💯🇳🇿💯
I wish you best in luck with your surgery and a speedy recovery! I’ll include you in my prayers and hope to see more exciting videos when you are fully recovered. Stay positive and humble brother! Kampay!
Nice ramp etiquette advice. Nice brake tip too! Thanks!
First time watching one of your posts and really enjoyed it. You're a good example for the youngsters watching this as to size limit laws and your releasing females. Keep it up, we need more sportsmen like you.
You are just the coolest guy. So happy your channel is huge.
Best of luck to you with your surgery and a speedy and complete recovery 🙏🏼
Tide changes and windshifts also cause those polylines to float. I had to drive around them on a few occasions. Thankfully with clear conditions I was able to see them.
I bought a Discover Bay Hauler because it is tall and raises the pots and traps up over my gunwale, I have quite a few years behind me on you. No lifting heavy pots for me 😉
The only time Matts isn't happy to see so many females is when he is crabbing! Love you dude!
It’s always a great day when Matt uploads
Wishing quick recovery Matt! Love from Michigan
Yes I did......... I very much enjoyed watching your video. Thanks
Prayers that your surgery go's well and wishing you a speedy recovery 🙏. Tight line's 🤙🎣
Excellent video. Love it. Wish I was out there with him. Seems like a very knowledgeable and easy going fisherman.
Hope the surgery goes good Matt long time fan n I can’t wait for all the future videos 🙏🏽bless up brotha
Still awesome watching the second time! Thanks so much! I love this!
This definitely motivates me to use my crabbing net for the first time this year. Great videos
Cool job. Many years ago, my grandparents had a camp on the Bay River NC. After a wonderful breakfast of
home made buttermilk biscuits with apple jelly..
Awesome video Matts, praying for you buddy with your surgery and for speedy recovery 🙏 👍. Aloha from Kansas

I am quite enjoyed your presentation and content especially the sound system and video quality are clear and great.
Man, that looks dangerous being out there all alone, stay safe brother.
You want to see danger on the water watch a few Boating Fail videos. I am surprised so often that none of those drunk idiots die.
Some fall to Captaincy, to gain a mark of respect, for some tiny bits of their 'Mother's Love' (or whoever...,
Oh, man. Nah, I'm not gonna step there. You'll have to do it yourself, or hire someone to, be you, in essence.
That's real kool the way he handles the whole endeavor alone and enjoys it, "SALUTE!
