I've seen many crazy videos on how to steam crabs the MD way. It made my DMV-raised wife upset because many of them were off their rocker, violating the traditional MD techniques. She didn't get upset about this one. This guy does it the right way.
This is actually an excellent video. I was born and raised in Maryland. It’s true he doesn’t explain the reasoning behind some of common mistakes but I think that was in the interest of brevity. For example, you don’t keep crabs in water because a dozen or so crabs will go through the oxygen in standing water relatively quickly and they will literally suffocate in water rather than in the air. Putting them on ice is great if you have the extra time, it’s a solid step. Beer, vinegar etc is all a personal preference but most folks in Maryland steam with some type of beer combination. And most importantly, he makes it clear that they are to be steamed and not boiled - excellent video.
I live in North Georgia and vacation a lot in Savannah and Tybee Island,Ga. While there one year i came upon Joe's Crab Shack right before you cross over the bridge to get to Tybee Island. We were starving and i mean starrrving and the waitress was very nice and described everything to us thoroughly and while sipping our sweet iced tea i was watching the cooks and how they were dressing the blue crab and lobster for the evening menu.He calls me back and showed me how to steam blue crab the right way and it was done EXACTLY like this guy did his and i wonder if he ever worked at Joe's.haha The guy turned out to be the owners son and told me when we get headed home from our vacation to stop by and he would fix me up. Well,i had almost forgotten til someone with us mentioned if we should stop by and have some more authentic crab before heading home and then i remembered. We ate there again, had drinks in these coconut figures that were done up like monkey's and my god he stuffed our stomachs good then brought over a bag full of live blue crab and told me to get them in a cooler and ice them down to shock them. We went and bought a cooler and iced them down before getting on the interstate heading home. I steamed those crab exactly the way he showed me and they were just like Joe's. I can't find fresh seafood in North Georgia but if you ever go to Tybee Island,Ga. stop by The Crab Shack on the right side of the road just before going into Tybee. You will thank me for it,trust and believe that.
I grew up around the Chesapeake in Virginia and learned how to steam crabs when I was 10 or 12. This is pretty much how we did it except we used Old Bay "Crab Boil" seasoning - actually a more traditional seasoning for crabs and shrimp. The beer is typical but any kind of alcohol will work. It doesn't add flavor to the crabs, but alcohol produces steam at a lower temperature. Water steam is hotter so cooking times are reduced if you use water, and reduced even further if you put a weight on the top of the pot. The vinegar helps keep the boiling water from frothing up as the crabs drip protein rich juices into the water. After being in southern Louisiana for the last 13 years, I learned the various methods for boiling crabs and shrimp. The main difference is that the crabs hold more water and make a bigger mess as you pick them when boiled. You have to choose your spices more carefully when boiling because unlike steaming, the boiling water carries the spices into the inside and flavors the meat. Steamed crabs the spices get on your hands as you pick the crab and introduce the spices more that way than during the cooking process. A really good tip: If you are not one to sit down to a picnic table covered in news paper and spend several hours picking crabs with your friends and family, but prefer to pick the crabs in the kitchen and use the meat to make crab cakes or stuff a fish fillet , or to cut into your seafood gumbo, stop cooking the crabs at the point where you still see darkness (sorta' bluish brownish copper) on the crab's back. This is about 80% cooked (for most people) but it allows you to further cook the meat in whatever dish without turning the meat into a stringy pulp. They are a little more difficult to pick but worth it to have whole crab meat chunks floating around in the Gumbo.
I really appreciate this video. I live, well, not in Maryland anymore and where I live they don't know how to steam crabs: they tend to boil them. Bleh! I'm very happy to see someone do it the proper way. I have followed your instructions and they turned out perfectly. Don't hate. When I first started watching this video, I was like.. "Oh so this guy thinks he knows..." But his way of cooking them actually looks pretty damn good. The vinegar, beer and seasoning. Aw c'mon: there's beer you drink, and beer you cook with. I mentioned in my initial comment I sub in Narraganset instead of another domestic, but it's really just for that beer element in the steam: drink a beer you like when you dig into those steamed beauties! :)
Very nice video . I as most Marylander's do it slightly different , but the basic principles are there . Good job . Just don't give all of the secrets up :-)
Matthew Walden nobody who grew up crabbing on the bay or ever worked on a crab boat uses anything but JO#2...Real Marylanders put old bay on everything...Except crabs
down south we get a big pot boiling with cajun seasoning and lemons, then we throw the crabs in with vegetables included, boil for a little bit, shut it down and let them soak for a while
Tall can of Busch, about 8 ounces Pepsi left in the cooler. Rice vinegar. I didn't do it your way, but steam is definitely better than the last time when I boiled. Second time catching and cooking crabs. Had some shrimp in the steam-pot too! The beer, cola and vinegar was great for peel an eat. Good man!!!
Vinigar 👍 yes at last!! Never heard it mentioned over in the US for shellfish but over in the UK, Where i grew up we always add it 🦞 gives a strangley sweet taste to our Brown crab and Lobster. Use also now in Denmark for fresh water Crayfish (native) super stuff vinigar 🦞
It's crab season again. Supposed to have some crabs in May. We're buying ours from Captain's Catch here in Delaware. But I can't wait to go crabbing again this year. It's so much fun.
I'm a lifelong Marylander, and I steam crabs at least ten times every summer. This is the way to do it. Many of the crab steaming videos on RUclips aren't great. This guy does it right.
I prefer richer beer like a dunkel, stout or double IPA, and no vinegar. Coors light might as well just be water. Adding seasoning to the broth is critical and you are one of the few I've seen do that. Two other things. First, the best way to tell if a crab is thoroughly cooked is to turn it over and look at the bottom. If the bottom of the crab is complete opaque white and not at all translucent, it's done. Second, if you really want the best experience, add more seasoning to the crabs after you remove them from the pot. Looks great and really, really helps the taste.
If you're using Coors light you could just save a few bucks & go with straight water..In Wisconsin that isn't even considered beer. I do remember as a kid we had had us a pile of these blue crabs in Maryland and they were delish.
Thanks brother I use this method everyimt enough the apple cider turns the shells into a chip so easy to break. Also add some liquid boil on the bottom for the essence to fly up with the steam helps flavor the meat too.
And just so you all know that Jo #2 is what most crab houses use. It is the BEST!!! Next option is old bay. Only other thing I like is a light dose of dry mustard and a light dose of rock salt. But light on those two. Again great video, I'll eat your crabs any day of the week
Still sounds like nitpicky controlling BS to me. If a guy likes the way that Coors flavors his crab then that's his choice. You don't get to choose for other people. It's not like he's substituted something like red wine, or milk.
People calling you a d bag cant handle the dmv. Honestly were all assholes, we have the worst road rage but we have the best blue crabs. I've never seen anyone steam crabs with vinegar though, I'll try it. I usually use old bay, a couple of beers, slice some onions, lime and throw it a handful of cilantro. Thanks for the video
Scorpio Brown really? does it? alaskan fisherman say to boil in freshwater (not saltwater) for meat to not stick... also, if u understand the water distillation process, isn't it pointless to use vinegar and beer as only the h2o will steam...leaving all the other minerals n flavorings at the bottom of the pot? u can of course smell the beer and vinegar boiling in the pot, but none of that flavor is being imparted on the crab meat, no? unless, the maryland thing is to pretend to boost flavor for mental stimulus? ...for show?
From New zealand. Totally agree with other videos suck. Thanks chief. Just returned from MD this morning and was looking at some authentic. Yours is the best and easiest is found. Only thing, I forgot to buy ol bay to bring back to NZ.
Man, people are so over dramatic and sensitive. He obviously is just chill and confident. He didn’t do anything offensive and really doesn’t sound like an asshole. He probably is kinda “arrogant” but that’s judging off his style and tone. Doesn’t mean his video wasn’t good. I will try this because it looks food as hell! I hate boiling my crab too. But I need to get a proper steaming pot, and a grill cuz they are juicy grilled over a fire. Fresh, wrapped in foil with seasoning...mmmmm Thanks for the cid
Very nice. I'm new to Maryland, but you have to enjoy the very thing (crabs), as part of Maryland state. Well done. The reason I checked you out is because we just paid $99 for half a bushel. I'm thinking I'll steam them myself. So thanks for the cooking tips.

Its gotta be Natty Boh. Piss beer most of the time, but tastes good with crabs
Its gotta be Natty Boh. Piss beer most of the time, but tastes good with crabs
Out 4Now. Its not Coors its National Boheminan Beer or Natty Bo as we in Maryland ( or murrland as some natives say) call it.
I'm a lifelong Marylander, and I steam crabs at least ten times every summer. This is the way to do it. Many of the crab steaming videos on RUclips aren't great. This guy does it right.
Love it, great video buddy. Just the way it should be done, but need that corn too although you did mention it
I'm from Houston, Tx, I use Modelo and Apple cider vinegar with lousiana Crawfish and Shrimp boil on top of the crabs.
VERY SPICY VERY DELICIOUS
Camera work and sound great and very little unnecessary chatter making presentation longer, which many do.
Seems like you think cooking is a tough guy thing?
Thomas McCormick Well there is Gordon Ramsay.
Yeah bitch I'm a tough guy
Gordon Ramsay 😂😂😂😂
What?
Gordon Ramsay I died 💀it comment had me dying laughing💀😂😂
And just so you all know that Jo #2 is what most crab houses use. It is the BEST!!! Next option is old bay. Only other thing I like is a light dose of dry mustard and a light dose of rock salt. But light on those two. Again great video, I'll eat your crabs any day of the week
Old Bay is for French fries, JO is for cooking crabs!!!
Freaking great video. I love the way you deliver the message. Concise and simple. Thanks for posting it.
Great explanation without the BS and distracting music. Good work sir
You absolutely do not want to use Coors to steam them. I cannot emphasize that enough. That's fine for some people, but not for me.
Andrew Horton just curious, what would be a better choice
Still sounds like nitpicky controlling BS to me. If a guy likes the way that Coors flavors his crab then that's his choice. You don't get to choose for other people. It's not like he's substituted something like red wine, or milk.
Then don't fuckin use it you muppet.
Beer is beer.
the beer you use doesn’t really affect the flavor tbh
People calling you a d bag cant handle the dmv. Honestly were all assholes, we have the worst road rage but we have the best blue crabs. I've never seen anyone steam crabs with vinegar though, I'll try it. I usually use old bay, a couple of beers, slice some onions, lime and throw it a handful of cilantro. Thanks for the video
lol light beer but this guy seems full himself about crabs even though he literally buries them in seasoning, disgusting
That's how they're supposed to be...
One of the best videos I have ever watched.Great job.
this is a pretty good video (minus the vineagar). don't know why everybody is talking shit.
miamiwax try using the vinegar just once I promise you won't regret it
If you don't understand why everyone thinks he is kind of a douche, you're likely a 5-11 tacti-cool socks and sandals douchebag yourself
Beehive Baah 🤣🤣🤣🤣 exactly
Vinegar makes the meat slide out easily
You have enough old bay on them?
I love boiling them, mainly because I grew up boiling em. I clean em, boil in slightly salted water, drain then salt and lime over them.
Anyone thinking about the crabs were like "what the fuck" when he dumped the seasoning on its head
Why do people hate him so much, he was pretty helpful for me. People are so random.
He showing you the right way I’m for.
Virginia
Man, people are so over dramatic and sensitive. He obviously is just chill and confident. He didn’t do anything offensive and really doesn’t sound like an asshole.
He probably is kinda “arrogant” but that’s judging off his style and tone. Doesn’t mean his video wasn’t good.
I will try this because it looks food as hell!
I hate boiling my crab too. But I need to get a proper steaming pot, and a grill cuz they are juicy grilled over a fire. Fresh, wrapped in foil with seasoning...mmmmm
Thanks for the cid
I prefer waterboarding my crabs
Hahaha!!!
davi santos p0
davi santos 😂
davi santos okay, now that is really funny. I'm getting a little tired of everybody beating this poor guy up but at least your comment was hilarious.
Very nice. I'm new to Maryland, but you have to enjoy the very thing (crabs), as part of Maryland state. Well done.
The reason I checked you out is because we just paid $99 for half a bushel. I'm thinking I'll steam them myself. So thanks for the cooking tips.
When u steam them don't they die slowly and painfully?
+Darren Nguyen yes. and deliciously.
Humans won't care unless it happens to them.
They don't have a central nervous system. They don't feel pain like mammals feel pain.
Brain can't comprehend pain they feel nothing
Darren Nguyen crabs can’t feel pain also they actually die really easily they are very delicate animals
Cooking style is great..but sir where Im from that crab hammer is a sin lol
Nice video
It's nice of him to post the video in the first place
6:33 aw he’s waving goodbye lol
I am so glad to see that you used beer and vin.!!!!! Most dont or use water, and trust me!! Beer is the way to go, granted I like Budlight lime!!
Are you feeling it now Mr krabs.
This is the PROPER Maryland way to a T
man your video is great for everybody to learn how to cook live crabs thanks a lot.
Not really. No real detail... No real explanation. He constantly sounded like a douchebag as much as looked like the stereotypical one on top of it so.....and i don't see how other videos "suck" compared to this one since this one is..... pretty ass.
