  • Blue Crabs, in this video well be setting our Blue Crab Traps (Pots) in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida. We'll be baiting the traps with fish carcasses and some chicken.
The day we went to pull the traps it was very rough so we stopped pulling them and waited for the weather to get better. After 2 days we were able to pull the Blue Crab Traps and ended up with 16 Large Blue Crabs.
    Catch and Cook #catchingbluecrabs #cookingbluecrabs #bluecrabs #indianriverlagoon

I’ve been recreational trotline crabber in Maryland for many years. You guys are making me so hungry right now. I found that the best seasoning is with the use in the crab houses here in Maryland which os JO #2 spice. The best beer in my opinion is Budweiser. And you’re right the beer does make it sweeter. Thanks for the excellent videos. Keep them coming. The Old Bay is excellent on your fried fish and things of that nature.

Wil, here from Rosedale, Maryland. Steaming Crabs is the technique that is preferred in Maryland. Boiling is unheard of.
When Crabs are Steamed you get the true taste of the crab. Here we put water, vinegar and beer in the steamer pot. Then we add the Crabs in layers. Meaning, Crabs go in the pot evenly, creating that first layer. Now we season with J.O. Crab Seasoning or Old Bay. Some of us ( I do) put yellow ground mustard also. Continue layering and Seasoning each layer. After Steaming some dip in melted butter and some dip into vinegar. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
    WIL

Ive caught what we call rock crab spider crab snow crab another one called picky toe or pinky toe crab depending who u ask😅. Great vid ive got 120 crab pots out i live on a island off mid coast we have had 1000lbs outta them last week crabs tend to take over in the winter here lobster in spring fall and summer. So ive eaten alit of crab 5his winter lol cheers

That was the first time we ever steamed our crabs in beer and they turned out great. We steam, boil, bake and cook them on a griddle just for variety. I used to catch what we called rock crabs with our blue crabs when I lived in New Jersey. I also was a commercial fisherman when I was young working on trawlers, gill netting for Boston Mackerel, cod fishing, clam boats and party boats in the summer. Now we just have fun and hope we catch something. Great hearing from you, we'd like to take another trip to Maine one of these days. Thanks for Watching our videos

Another great video.. thanks..! just got 5" of snow & 29' ..again today.. guess you remember that? Q? you obviously remember the "no females" rules in the DELMARVA & Tri-State (PA -NJ-DE) fisheries.. seems a lot of your catches are females ... I know it's OK in FL but stills seems "wrong' (?) to us here up north ..? maybe we're just jealous! also the she-crabs had a different flavor as I recall, not as sweet/light as I recall. sorry my allergies have me off any seafood for almost 2 decades.. God is cruel sometimes! my Dad would always use 2 cans of beer & only use the she crabs for she-crab soup when we could buy them commercially.. love the Wye river in MD .. crazy good crabbing...! St Michaels was also OK... never did well crabbing in NJ.. Sea Isle or Avalon .. small critters.. be well !

    • @TheOldCoupleOutdoors
      @TheOldCoupleOutdoors  8 месяцев назад

I did some research on keeping female blue crabs and found out that the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center did a study on how targeting just male blue crabs actually hurts the population because a lot of female crabs will never find a mate, that makes sense to me from my experience. You have places like Daytona Beach where you seldom catch a male crab. If you were to take your kids or grandkids crabbing there they would probably never catch a crab to take home. People don't think twice about keeping a female fish, that's because most people can't tell the difference between a male or female fish but anybody can tell a female crab from a male crab so they are all experts. Most people don't know that most of the soft shell crab they eat are females. You can go on line and buy Maryland female blue crabs, all you want and some people prefer them. Hear in Florida we have some big crabs and there's plenty of them year-round and we don't even have a size limit. In New Jersey the minimum size is 4 1/2 inches to me that's a very small crab that we don't keep. The same with Mississippi they have no bag limit and you can keep females but it doesn't hurt the population in fact we catch more crabs there than we do in Florida. What I've found that hurts the crab population the most is natural causes like red tide and a lot of rain. Thanks a lot for your support we really appreciate it

Why you don't put old bay in the water instead of on the crabs? The season is just sitting on their shells instead of steaming that flavor thru the crab mest. Have yall ever tried liquid crab boil and also adding onions cut in half? I'm from down south louisiana and we also put in naval oranges cut in half

Hey, Maryland lady here. When you put old bayon the shell, you get the flavor from your hands touching the shell as you break the under body of the crab. The old bay does actually steam into crab also, as you can add to pot as well as top of crabs. You should add to each layer of crabs.

It still gets into the crabs, if you notice in our videos we cook them a lot of different ways with seasoning, without seasoning with just salt water, boiled, steamed, on the griddle, baked, cleaned and whole. We eat a lot of crab and like to experiment but to me they're all good. Thanks a lot for Watching our videos we really appreciate it.

No square wire yellow traps.stick with black hexagonal coated wire traps
.better yet plain wire coayed in roofing tar.

I find the best traps are the galvanized heavy chicken wire traps, there's a reason we have the yellow one. Thanks for Watching our videos

I only drink alone or with somebody.
Is it my imagination or do you usually catch more crabs from a hand line. Maybe it's just because you know right if they are trere and if not you can just kerp moving till you find them.

David, You're right about that, we enjoy dock fishing and crabbing but I've been around boats all my life I bought my first boat when I was 10 years old, that's when I started working on boats, they were all wood back then and a lot of work. But I still enjoy the boats. Thanks again for Watching our videos

We're both 77 years old and we plan on crabbing, shrimping and fishing for quite a few more years. Today we were 10 miles offshore fishing for weakfish. We keep pushing ourselves, you have to keep active. We hope you're able to get out on the water and catch something, it's great therapy. Crabbing is the easiest, you just need some line a chicken neck or leg and a net to land the crabs, you can catch a lot of crabs using that method. Thanks for Watching our videos.
