Does the Size of Rain Gauge Matter?

  • This video explains why you can measure rainfall with containers of different sizes but still the readings will be the same.
We only measure the height of the water in a rain gauge. This video explains why the height of the water level will remain the same even though the volume is different.

I believe there will be a slight variance (0.1%?) in column height for rain gauges of differing diameters. This is why an 8" diameter gauge was chosen as the global standard, for an accurate historical record.

Cube or cylinder. Measurement should be the same unless sides are tapered.

Actually... if you have containers that are 1", 2", 4" and 8" in diameter side-by-side, the 8" diameter container will likely have deeper water in it, in inches (or centimeters). why? Because the distribution of raindrops is not even. and the 8" diameter container does a better job of capturing the distribution. That's why the National Weather Service uses a container that is 8" in diameter. Theoretically, the wider the container, the more accurate it will be, but in reality, it doesn't matter that much because rain will vary across the city you live in, some areas will always get more rain than others.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking in general terms. Was thinking that 3-4 inches would be plenty good. Your comment sent me along an interesting browse of NWS rain and snow collection methods LOL. Their methods are pretty primitive, they still use a measuring stick and that makes sense as a practical matter.

What about for those rain guage which has separate measuring cylinder to measure rainfall depth? Kindly explain..sir

My issue comes with wind blown rain. Wonder if the larger container will collect more in that case. Also the rim of the smaller container should contact more rain by area so larger rain drops might be more affected by hitting the rim and splashing out since the thickness of the wall of the container is not scaled.

Rain gauges are just a estimate, it can rain in one place, and a mile away get more rain. It's only accurate for a small area. It's just a good guess.

After how much time we will take readings from rain gauge device Sir?? Is it the reading taken after rain stops?? Or some seconds to minutes??

Now, if you want a cylinder with a diameter of one drop of rain.... most of the rain will miss the opening,,, and it may show 0mm rain for some time, but once a drop hits the gauge, it may go directly to showing 5mm.
