    Doc buys two wireless rain gauges and puts them to the test. One of the rain gauges is easily ruled out because it would not work. The other rain gauge performs perfectly and is a great value. Note: The unit does not require wifi, it talks to itself on its own.

    I’ve had an acurite rain gauge for about a year. It has always been reliable for me, and I haven’t had to change the batteries yet. It’s a high quality product that helps me figure out if I can skip a day of watering or not. I left it out during the winter, and it wasn’t harmed by some below freezing weather.

    This is the exact gauge I have. Got it several months ago from Home Depot. Had it shipped to me. It’s great. I wish I would have had it along time ago. When rain is in the forecast overnight I always place the monitor in my bedroom so I can see how much rain we got as soon as I wake up!

    Sorry Doc, we’ve had the first type for 3 & 1/2yrs and it’s been great ever since. I run a horticultural business & it’s crucial to our whole scheduling & plans for each day. My 14yr old son set it up, from taking it out of the box to installing it on the fence. He had it done in 25mins, something he proudly tells anyone who asks ‘what’s that thing on your fence?’
    There’s a small button on the back - ‘scan’, that if anything goes awry, you press & they talk to each other wirelessly to regain normal function. We’ve never had a problem with this unit & would (and have) recommend it to anyone.

    You should review the weather flow tempest weather station with a haptic rain guage and tons of other cool features. I just got mine for father's day and love it

    I've had the oval Acurite unit for 4 years. They don't last forever. Mine has a broken tab at the base. Wasps get inside, and spiders build webs, so it needs cleaning. We live in a dry mediterranean climate. That said, it is accurate and works flawlessly.

    I have one of the oval ones too. It is accurate until it get a frog in it. I have found that it will report over 100 inches of rains sometimes. Each time that has happened I have found a small tree frog that has climbed into the unit and will post up under the paddle. I assume it is not allowing the paddle to totter all the way over but moves just enough for magnet to move by the sensor giving it frequent false readings.

    had this exact model rain gauge and it worked great for 4 months.... then it didn't. wasn't dirty or bad battery. just didn't register rainfall any longer ... do have to calibrate it for setup

    Hey Doc, take a look at the Ambient Weather WS-7079, (it also has a soil probe and a pool water temp ) and will wirelessly feed into one app called LAwn Journal.
    Think you will like this product.

    I have a AcuRite wireless weather station that records everything from rain to the hundredth of an inch, humidity, dewpoint, wind speed/direction, heat index, and barometric pressure as well as indoor conditions. It can send info to smartphones too. Its a $150 unit and I paid $15 at a thrift shop 3yrs ago. It works perfect. I never tried the smartphone app as I have never been Owned by a smartphone deVICE.

    Next step... setup some IFTT to your rachio. Syringe based on temp trigger, irrigation delays based on actual rainfall, etc. It's pretty powerful stuff.

    I take it the unit is not WiFi connectable for remote monitoring?

  • @kevinpence2971
    @kevinpence2971 3 года назад

    It’s probably recording up to a hundredth (0.01) of an inch, not a tenth (0.10).
