I just received this model yesterday, from an Amazon purchase. So far, I'm really impressed with the quality of construction, particularly with the base unit or display. I'm eagerly awaiting our first rain. I checked the calibration and it was so close to perfect I decided not to make any adjustment, at least not until after I get a real-world test with the device mounted right beside my CoCoRAHS mandated gauge. It'll be nifty to monitor rainfall rates in near real time. I only wish the display would refresh with every tip of the bucket instead of at 60-second intervals. About your occasionally wildly high readings... I once got home from work and caught a neighbor kid out in the yard with a garden hose, pouring water into my gauge, LOL. Just a thought. Oh, did you realize nearly all of your sentences begin with one of two words, either Now or So?
I did not have to change the calibration either out of the box. Acurite does a good job calibrating their rain gauges before their customers get it. 60 seconds is definitely a long time and I hope Acurite can reduce that in the future. @@illfather7066 I did that, and could not adjust it up enough. That mechanism that measures tiny spoon fulls of rain in my gauge was under measuring. I've compared it to 3 different conventional gauges that measure water depth in a known area. They all agree, and this mechanical integrating gauge is flawed at least in my unit.
I changed the batteries this spring, and the plastic shattered where the bottom flexes to make a catch. I glued it back with plastic epoxy. But I'm not finding this design to be good enough for my use. I like that it captures rain events, and you can go through the history of them. But it needs to be much more accurate.
Fred Hababorbitz yeah they seem to be touchy and a bit fickle....not sure if I like this thing yet...it's not worth it for me to hassle with....I'm not a farmer lol

Do you recommend alkaline or lithium batteries for rain gauge sensor?
is there a battery indicator?.
Without comparing it to a standard rain gauge you will not see that it undermeasures real rainfall. I've found it undermeasuring by a 3:5 ratio.
