    Quantifying rain should also have been explained as the scale needs to be calibrated based on the top area of the bottle

    • @dartofscience
      @dartofscience  3 года назад +2

      top are is exactly the same as the rest of the bottle...and the start point is not at the bottom of the bottle but a little higher, where the bottle becomes straight

      The diameter of the guage doesn't matter, a 1 inch rain will raise the level of the rain guage, or a swimming pool, by 1 inch.
      Only if a larger funnel goes into a smaller container would the ruler need to be differently calibrated.

    I don't understood the aim. Is it to compair the amount rain fallen yesterday and to day or specific time given

    • @dartofscience
      @dartofscience  2 года назад

      It is to measure the amount of rain over an area in the specific time ie., it It will help you in measuring the quantity of rainfall for the duration of time you leave the rain gauge out.

    i think that if the bottle has more diameter then it will be shown less mm but with lesser diameter it will be shown more mm then how van it be accurate

    • @balappauppar262
      @balappauppar262 2 года назад

      Diameter of top portion should be same as that of bottom portion, this is principle behind this instrument

    Which bottle you use

    • @dartofscience
      @dartofscience  2 года назад

      We've used a 2L plastic bottle. These are the bottles in which soft drinks are usually sold. You can buy them at any general stores!

  • @nooneedd7656

    My query
    The meteorological dept measures rain in mm....
    If we have a bottle with,very large catchment area of the bottle... Say 1 sq. m. And another bottle with normal area, then....won't the quantity of rain water collected differ in both the bottles?
    how can we know the exact and correct rainfall happened in a desired time period?

    • @dpathania27
      @dpathania27 2 года назад

      same amount will fall. and same height will show in both. unless the bottle/container/catchment is tapered as it goes deeper, because that will cause mis representation. to help you understand better: large catchment will catch a lot more, but then it has to fill a lot more as well....the bottle will catch a lot less, but has to fill a lot less as well. therefore its going to be the same height of water in both in the same given time

    If the size of the bottle change then the measure will also change.
    So is there any measure for the bottle size?

    • @dartofscience
      @dartofscience  Год назад

      Not really. If the size of the bottle changes, that will also lead to an increase in the circumference and therefore the water will have to fill more in order to reach the necessary mark. But, the larger the opening, the lower the statistical error in measurements in real-world applications

  • @nooneedd7656
    @nooneedd7656 2 года назад

    I think that is not sufficient. The open catchment area of the bottle decides the amount of rain. Am I wrong?

    944mm in 24 hrs wow our biggest flood we got 250-300mm in 72hrs and some rivers took 1-2weeks to go down.

    • @dartofscience
      @dartofscience  3 года назад

      Mumbai floods in 2004 or 2005, 600mm of rain fell in a few hours during high tide which meant that the water through the gutters would not go anywhere and the city got flooded for 24. Biggest ever flood ive personally been in.

    The funnel is pointless and makes emptying the thing more bothersome. Also, it's too much bother to keep it partially filled with colored water, just melt some candle wax to fill the bottom and zero your ruler at the top of the wax.

    • @dartofscience
      @dartofscience  7 месяцев назад

      without the funnel, the water will will splashing out in heavy rain. Thats the point..

  • @latentheat3956

    This is not going to be accurate. Just use something else has symmetric cylindrical shape.

    • @dartofscience
      @dartofscience  3 года назад

      why this won't work? I'm sure you can say that because youve not see the video, and if you want just watch close to the end where i explain why this much water (as shown in the thumbnail) is where you start the reading from, not at the bottom of the bottle because there it is narrow..:)
