On a serious note though I guess I didn't go through the loneliness thing so much as I'm kind of a loner anyway. But I found I had so much time to kill since I wasn't trying to get wasted all day (which is a full time job itself lol) so I am having fun making "music" and finding that pretty satisfying, even though I can't play a note on any instrument 😅

Omg, so true! When you're a mess, you tend to need friends for support, and not very picky who. Then you decide to improve yourself, and ofc need time to yourself to do that, and become choosy with who you spend your time with!

I know, right? Self improvement is a lonely road. I am hoping somewhere along the way I am going to find out my tribe. I quit drinking after watching (twice) Tom Holland's interview about quitting. He is very convincing about the benefits. I had already been quitting all sorts of toxic people, food, behaviors, jobs, artificial sweeteners, etc.

Alcohol and cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my husband which brought me into my disastrous journey on Alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

From my experience it really works excellently! It doesnt even need to be a full hit. With potent shrooms 2-3 small ones will still make a clear difference. It will be a few hour cosy rumbling moment around rest time, but afterwards its just calm and you feel amazing and gain your freedom. Psilocybin is different dudes, its the only "treatment" I would recommend to someone who genuinely wants to get better. There is no addiction, withdrawal, or negative side effects. It's just pure healing., far more effective than any anti-depressant. You can thank me later

Stopped drinking alcohol 10: years ago next New Year’s Day. Being an Australian male it’s part of our culture. From 18 years old to 46 years old I was always up for it socially or in the shed with my beloved beer fridge. My kids who are 17 and 15 vaguely remember me drinking which is a good thing. Just check your resting heart rate over night when you have had a few drinks. It goes through the roof. As I understand it, it's a depressant which lowers your heart rate and makes you feel good, relaxed etc. When the alcohol starts wearing off you have the rebound effect, which causes your heart rate to jackup in the opposite way. If I have been drinking and wake up in the night I feel heart pounding, teary eyes, anxiety, headache, bp must be through the roof as you are dehydrated as well. Horrible state of mind, just nasty stuff, never worth it. Just steals tomorrows happiness. Life is significantly better without it.

I've had a few months break from it and I do feel like at those times I feel better. Even the feeling of overcoming alcohol gave me a sense of pride. I might go for another 3-4 months without alcohol and see how I feel again.

My husband and I quit drinking about 4 years ago for 9 months. And we felt amazing and loved it I remember….. and then decided to start again as it was actually quite lonely. And now I look back and wish we had never started again. But I told myself to remind myself that it only really sucks for 3 days and then it gets better and better. Hope I find it within to quit again one day. I’m what they call alcohol dependant. My life is great and I’m super healthy in all aspects of my life but I love to have wine every night. And I know it’s a dopamine hit. So it makes it hard. Please don’t comment telling me to quit and I’m and alcoholic. I’m just sharing my experience of where I am with it ❤

No, you are not alcohol dependent. If you were Alcohol dependant (the most severe form of Alcoholism and the final stage) you would be incredibly ill, Don't confuse Alcohol dependence with binge drinking or excess drinking. If you were Alcohol dependent your life would not be great and you would not be super healthy. Your body would literally be breaking down in front of your very eyes and you still wouldn't be able to stop. You would need alcohol every few hours and in greater volume to stop the deadly withdrawal symptoms. That's why I don't believe half of these over exaggerated stories on here from bored, insecure and lonely people. You do not have alcohol dependance. You would be in hell if you did and probably wouldn't be writing a post like you did.

I stopped drinking alcohol 6-years ago. Drank through my late teens to early thirties. Just started hating how it was making me feel and what it was doing to people I care about. I went hard one night, was so sick the next day, quit and never miss it. I wouldn’t go back, but it can still be tough and awkward when people in your life still do it.
We all know what the last few years has been like. It’s been tough to be sober. BUT I noticed when you stay sober through all the rough crap, you get stronger, your skin gets thicker, and you learn to endure the things that suck. You are so much better feeling when you get through it. Much better than when you reach for a drink to “relieve” the stress, but then when it wears off, you are 10 times worse. Repeat the cycle.
Sober living isn’t always easy, but it feels more stable and you are better equipped to handle what life throws at you. You realize something sucks and is unpleasant, you figure out how to solve it as soon as possible.

So, true about how our society has framed alcohol. It's the one drug that you're "weird" if you don't imbibe. People will actually pressure you to drink. They will set up drinking engagements where you meet friends at bars solely to drink. People who drink heavily usually don't like hanging around people who don't bc sobriety is a "buzz kill." I'm navigating cutting down on alcohol and it's scary to contemplate going out with friends who I normally drink with and then not ordering alcohol. I know my true friends won't care.

3 years sober now. Alcohol is often self medication. It's rarely the initial root cause for problems, but it quickly becomes one, and that often distracts from real issues. Whether that's an "innocent" reason like a break after a long day to covering up bigger issues or self-medicating for undiagnosed mental issues (ADHD for example).
If you're on the fence, booze free ales have come on leaps and bounds, and if you like a beer, I'd highly recommend trying that instead.

The few times that I have drank I noticed immediate negative side effects to my mood, sleep, and decision making that lasted for a couple of days and even a week or two. Its mind blowing to me how American culture encourages excessive drinking and how when you tell people that you don't drink people assume you're a recovering alcoholic or weird. I'm going to still the docs response and tell people why do you want me to drink when I don't want too and for those annoying ass people that for some reason try to act like they're better than me for drinking (aka my co-workers) I'm going to say I don't drink because I love and respect myself and body

One of my friends turned into an alcoholic (who thankfully had the clarity to check himself into rehab) but I would always observe him and the people we hang out with, when we drank and when we didn't, and I always found it funny how they viewed each other depending on whether alcohol was involved. Someone could be a lot of fun when there were drinks or a bit of a dud, like myself, when there weren't. And I'd always just think, if I have to be drunk to be fun, am I really fun? I stopped drinking about 6 years ago, maybe more now. I don't remember how long as I am not one to track the days of things like that. The first thing that happened was I got uninvited to social events. I was actually called 'weird' for not drinking. Some people wanted to know if there was something wrong with me. LOL. It has been so long now that I have no desire for it. I used to love scotch, drank at least 300 ML of rum a day if I didn't drink equivalent of something else or a couple of bottles of wine. I was a heavy drinker and didn't recognize any problem as it didn't affect my work or exercise life. Quitting wasn't a problem though - alcohol was so much easier than nicotine to put down. I am glad for clips like this because since then I've tried to tell people that there's no benefit (physical health benefits) to alcohol but no one believes you when you tell them that.

I have the occasional social drink but have pretty much stuck to lights for 20 years and I still get these type of comments occasionally, although it’s much more excepted now in my 40’s while everyone else is trying to reverse their shitty health and beer guts with low carb beer and lights 😂

Fellow Aussie here, I'm a social drinker, all my friends are big drinkers and always have been, they're always trying to persuade me to be pissheads like them, I sometimes deliberately not drink just to piss them off,.
I don't understand why some people want others to drink, it's almost an insult to them if I just have a few drinks instead of 20 like them.
I like beer, but I don't like the feeling of being drunk, even though I've been a "drinker" for 30 years.
Aussie drinking culture can be really really fun but it's also really really ugly.

I am now 67. I drunk a lot of beer since I was 15. I quit the beer but now stuck on diet coke which is worse. Harder to quit than the beer.

I stopped drinking alcohol in 1990.
34 years now without drinking or drugs. I will be 60 years old this year, and that is significant. Because all of my friends have died over the years, mostly from alcohol. Life is better without booze.

Did dry January 2023 and after 2 weeks I felt amazing and kept going. Had 4 celebratory drinks in 2023 and that's good for me. Loving my new life ❤️ I drink N.A. beer.

I have never been a big drinker- it just never agreed with me. Id have a champagne when out at a nice dinner or birthday party, but always struggled to finish it. This should have been my reason to stop. But it took the death of a parent for me to go cold turkey. I was already in such a place of grief- emotional one moment, numb the next- that when my partner offered me a wine to help me 'relax' to finally get some sleep, im glad i had the understanding that alcohol was the last thing that was going to help me sleep, or feel better, or think clearly. It was only after 6 months of no alcohol that I looked into the true dangers of alcohol even for light drinkers like myself, and I was amazed. More than a year later amd i feel good, sleep well, and people tell me all the time how good i look.... changing to no alcohol was the ONLY change ive made. I can therefore only imagine the benefits a heavier drinker would feel if they stopped.

6 days sober today. I am 31 years old and i drink alcohol since i was 13. I have two cats, a beautiful person next to me, a beautiful place where i live, a good job and i grow a lot of plants. I am also an artist, i used to make rap music .Now without alcohol i feel that my life îs pointless. But i know that this is a side effect of quiting alcohol. I was also a junkie, smoking ciggars and marijuana daily for 15 years. I was doing cocaine, extasy, amphetamine and other drugs. Couple years ago i quit all the heavy durgs and two years ago i quit smoking marijuana. Couple months ago i quit smoking ciggarettes. Now the final boss îs alcohol. Then i can go back to my fitness trainings and i can finally focus on making music. Is a long road and painful af.

I am virtually teetotal now but my disenchantment with alcohol started after leaving the Merchant Navy when I realised that any problems I had had to deal with professionally were all connected to booze.

I've had a drinking problem for the past 2 years. A few months ago my health and mental symptoms were taking a toll on my life and relationships so I cut back drastically. I noticed a difference after a week of quitting. Not 100%, but I felt much better. The best way I could describe it is my soul was slowly coming back. It was great. Then I relapsed. Life, stress, etc. got in the way and triggered the need for a drink. I know that's a lame excuse but it happens and I accepted that I'm not perfect. Currently trying again to cut back.

Finally people waking up. The most refreshing part of this is when Steven talks about how society conforms to normalising alcohol because people want to feel included in social situations. Best thing you can do is stay away from those people and find hobbies/ activities that keep you functioning, active and relaxed. Alcohol is like any other drug which only gives you short term enjoyment and long term pain. Running, hiking, swimming, walking give you long term happiness

I socialise in circles where a lot of drinking takes place, whereas I myself never drink more than half a glass of wine, perhaps close to a full glass if the party is really long. I simply do not enjoy that 'tipsy' feeling and will stop as soon as I feel it coming on. I was riffed on and teased like hell in the beginning, but I just laughed and played along. Now they're almost affectionate about my non-drinking habits and have accepted that that's just who I am and it doesn't interfere at all with me having a good time. When people see that their bullying doesn't have an effect on you, they eventually give up and let you be.

@jenniferh7020 probably more empathetic being a woman. Men just seem to have this urge to push others to be on their "level." Bullshit mentality and I just refuse to be around that. Find interests that are not centered on alcohol.

@@fightorflight5433 Hmm, I must admit I hadn't thought about it that the pressure is of course worse when you're a man. Because there's this totally idiotic idea that being able to drink a lot means that you're more "manly". But in actual fact, there's nothing manly about a pathetic alcoholic if you think about it. Anyway, good for you, and I'm glad you walked away from all that nonsense. The world would be a better place if more people did that.

I've 45 and have been quit for 2 years. It was destroying my life. My goals were getting put on the back burner, because I was either p.ssed or hungover. I had no energy. I've got more done in the last 2 years than I had in the previous 5 drinking alcohol. I'm not getting any younger, and can't afford to waste anymore years. I think alcohol is thee worst drunk in the world, but it's legal, cheap and easily accessible, whereas something like heroin is expensive and you can't just walk into a store and buy it.

I’m not sure why college kids should even have access to that stuff in the first place it can be really dangerous, like it’s not really needed for people under the age of 25(ok to be honest I get having one to socialize but still it can increase dependence on it and that’s dangerous)
