  • Food is medicine or it's poison. Knowing what food to eat, and having the discipline to stick to the plan, is usually the biggest game-changer when it comes to improving the health of both your body and your brain. In this video, Dr. Amen gives his 11 simple food rules you can begin to implement in your life today so that you can optimize your health to be your best.
In 2020, The BMJ published a study exploring the role diet and nutrition play in mental health, with the lead authors stating, “Poor nutrition may be a causal factor in the experience of low mood, and improving diet may help to protect not only the physical health but also the mental health of the population.” In other words, food matters when it comes to mental health.
Unfortunately, a number of foods and food ingredients, common in the standard American diet, are toxic to mental health. They can harm your brain, and put you at increased risk for brain and mental health conditions such as depression, ADD/ADHD, anxiety disorders, and dementia. Awareness of the following toxic foods can help you to avoid what increases mental health problems and choose brain-healthy foods instead!
00:00-04:48 Introduction: Food is medicine or it's poison.
04:48-08:30 Rule #1: Love foods that love you back
08:32-16:40 Rule #2: Go for the highest quality calories you can find
    16:41-19:19 Rule #3: Hydrate
    19:21-23:07 Rule #4: High-quality protein
    23:08-27:54 Rule #5: Healthy Fat
27:55-31:26 Rule #6: Go for smart carbohydrates
31:27-32:42 Rule #7: Use herbs & spices like medicine
32:43-33:00 Rule #8: Make your food as clean as possible
33:04-39:41 Rule #9: Eliminate any potential allergens
39:42-40:52 Rule #10: Intermittent fasting can supercharge your brain
40:54-46:53 Rule #11: Get a routine that serves your health rather than hurts it

10 Simple Rules to Guarantee a Healthier Life....
    1) Only love foods that love you back
    2) Consume high quality foods, but not too much of them (go for the highest-quality foods you can consume & don't eat too much of them; think, "Does this serve my health or does it hurt it?" before you eat it.
    3) hydrate your body and brain with 8 glasses of water a day (body=70% water, brain=80% water)
    4) Eat high quality protein at every meal (it helps balance your blood sugar), such as fish, lamb, turkey, pork, nuts, etc.
    5) Eat & cook with high-quality fat (60% of brain is fat).
    6) Go for smart carbs not dumb carbs (smart=low glycemic, high fiber, no fake coloring...dumb=pasta, bread, potatos)
    7) use herbs & spices like medicine (cloves, oregano, parsley, sage, thyme, rosemary, sage, turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper, et al)
    8) Make your food as "clean" as possible (read the label)
    9) Eliminate potential allergens (if you don't know your allergens, elimate gluten, dairy, corn, soy, artifical dyes & sweeteners, msg)
    10) If you don't have hypoglycemia, employ intermittent fasting. (don't eat 2-3 hours before bedtime)
    BONUS
    11) Find a routine that works for you and use it (and find 24 healthy foods you LOVE)
NOTE: It REALLY helps to listen to the entire video because there are little nuggets of wisdom interspersed throughout.

Rules, my version of this video:
    1. Only love foods that love you back. 😅 Don't eat stuff that hurts you. (But remember: a chicken will never love you...!)
    2. Eat foods with high calories but not too much of them. Calories matter! Pay attention! Don't drink your calories! Stay away from soda, juice and bread!
    3. Hydrate! Drink water! (Drink water with a little lemon and/or apple cider vinegar if you need to loose weight, have problems with reflux or thyroid...)
    4. Eat high quality protein with every meal. (Beware of factory farmed meat!!!! Quality protein is lentils, hemp, fish (wild, not factory farmed), eggs (only from free chickens outside, treated well) Eat wild meat if you have to. Kill a moose if you dare. 😆
    5. Use quality fats. Fats don't make you fat. Olive oil, avocado oil and coconut oil is the best. Seafood. Nuts. You can cook with olive oil, but not stir fry.
    6. Go for smart carbs and get rid och the bad ones. Colourful. Low gi. Bread, pasta, rice and potatoes are not good; eat only very little and seldom or (better) not at all. Cloves! Rosemary. Cinnemon. Oregano. Sage. Walnuts. Go for stuff with anti oxidants!
    7. Use herbs and spices like medicine. Saffron! Curcumin. Turmeric with black pepper! Chili. Ginger.
    8. Make your food as clean as posssible. Avoid artificial and processed foods.
    9. Eliminate soy, corn, gluten, dairy, sugar, artificial sweetener to see if you have an allergy. Food matters!
    10. Intermittent fasting. Try 18/6 (18 h fasting, 6 h eating window 2 or 3 meals. Or 16/8.)
Teenagers are insane. They will never listen to reason... 😅 But he had a good approach. You have to discuss with them as if they are adults; with respect and lead them so they think it's their own suggestion to eat well... 🤣🎣

His diet had loads of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and quality protein. His depression disappeared. He later paid a visit during my class and brought us a fruit basket. Thank you Dr Amen, I've just found you! I gave up gluten, cows milk and yeast in 2001, long before such things were well known. It was difficult, but over 30 of my lifelong symptoms cleared up so it was worthwhile. I've never cheated because it isn't worth it
Most significantly, I lost a lifetime of depression and mood swings and saved my marriage. I thought I'd be better in a month and didn't dream it would be forever.
After one month I tried dairy again. That night I lay in bed wondering whether it would be better to throw myself under a train or shoot myself. That was when the penny dropped - my depression (since the age of 7) was tied up with dairy. I've never looked back.
Unfortunately I didn't at that point give up all unhealthy foods, and continued eating sugar in home baked gluten free treats. In 2016 I received a complex autoimmune diagnosis. After trying and hating the side effects of the ghastly medications I was prescribed, I upped the level of my diet. I've now cut out all starch, processed foods and sugar (except whole fruit). For a while I even cut out eggs, goats milk and several other foods while my gut healed, but I'm now so much better and virtually medication free. I sometimes feel I should write a book on this life changing experience.
Thank you for bringing this to the public. My life changed and I want to tell the world!

The statement about the man that ate corn and had a vision of putting a gun in his mouth after 20 minutes. That's real for me! For me it is wheat! I call them my wheat hell holes! When you have a sensitivity to food like that, it puts you into a form of psychosis. It feels real. The terrible thoughts, the suffocating in your body, uncontrollable crying and despair. Wheat destroyed my life for a year and I fantasized jumping in front of a bus everyday while waiting for the right bus to get me to work. I knew I needed nutrition, so I went raw vegan! Within two weeks I felt like a new person! I added some bread back in, homemade sourdough at that! I woke up the next day crying all over again! That's when it clicked that it was the wheat! I tell my story as much as I can because I can only imagine how many people are suffering the way I did because of an ingredient in our food that we eat for almost every meal! I am not a raw vegan now, but I have stayed vegan and gluten free for 3 years now! I have dabbled with wheat a few times over the years and it always ends in utter disaster! Fun fact, I worked at Olive Garden and was eating their food when I spiraled out of control!

Dr. Amen please consider a study of teachers counselors and pastor type individuals. I was blessed to be a counselor during my military career and I know my brain was/is effected by caring for those that don't always care about themselves due to various reasons. I call it the Care for the Care Giver Syndrome (co-dependency on steroids). I believe this syndrome is growing as many family members and others are in care giver's positions and as result the care giver may pass away before the person they are caring for. Thank you and God Bless you and your family today and always! Mercy Grace & Peace! AAAmen!

Great advice. I'm starting to lean more towards just live your life to the fullest, mostly healthy, a little naughty. Life is short. My main focus is LOVE, de-stressing, breathing, hydrating, fresh air, rest, relaxation, good food that my body needs. No need to overthink it.
But I realize the US is a crazy place, not comparable to where I come from. You have to work a lot harder to cut through all the bs. For example, what public schools serve kids for lunch.... how are they even surviving childhood with that kind of standard? It's so sad.

I really liked your TED talk, in fact I found it profound. I was so excited to call and find out how I could become a patient and get my brain scanned. After being addicted to drugs for 17 years I knew I had done some damage to my brain and was having some residual effects. Been clean now for almost 7 years. But I must admit, the cost of the scans and treatment plan were impossible for me to afford. I’m on Medicaid and so “low income.” So while your studies on the brain are revolutionary (I can truly see that), they are not accessible to all people. Sadly, not at all accessible to me. Thank you.

@@doctork1708 That's not why it's like that. anybody in the healthcare industry that is a pioneer in a certain area that hasn't been done before, they are not able to get insurance to cover their practices. It is because healthcare insurance companies require that only "research-based practices" that have been proven effective, (according to multiple studies), are allowed to charge insurance. Or I should say insurance chooses to cover.

Wow..that corn story brings my mind to the time I gave my son oatmeal after keeping gluten out of his diet for weeks. His reaction was mindblowing. He actually got seriously angry and paranoid within a minute. It was SO dramatic,I was shocked and I was very relieved to have finally found one of the biggest culprits to causing his psychological issues .I totally believe that Grains,as well as other dietary foods,. do absolutely cause schizophrenia.Needless to say,he eats no grains and is a healthy adult who is very very careful about his diet with no gluten, sugar or dairy ect.ect..I thank my lucky stars I was relentless in my exploration of his diet to test every food I could on him.No doctor helped me because they are not educated in medical school about anything dietary .Not only did his severe psychological issues disappear but so did his serious asthma, which I was told by his pediatrician he would never be off a machine for the rest of his life.He has no asthma today or any other looming psychological problem.

I learned on my own. Once I learned to eat in a time limited manner, my groceries were easier to get. Then I was able to get in every food line in my city and learned to preserve my foods. It takes incredible discipline and focus, but I wanted to live, and my kidneys were not in agreement. Once i became plant focused my kidneys began to heal. I lost 80 pounds and got my life back. And most of the changes happened in 8-9 months.

That is a misconception that poor people can’t eat healthy. I made a wonderful salad yesterday and the total cost was .98c. I also did a grass fed roast with all organic veggies. It was $5.79 a serving so if using conventional meat, non organic or home grown veggies then the price would be about half that. So for less than $4 you could have a great meal and it’s cheaper than fast food. A roasted chicken would be even cheaper. Cook with real food and it will be less expensive.
