AMEN!! I can attest to food as medicine. I was diagnosed with autoimmune disease starting with IBS at age 18, then Graves’ disease at age 41 and MS at age 49. Took me a few years to heal with diet and nutrition but here I am at 57 and medication free no longer sick. I keep everything under control with FOOD and Vitamins and try to keep my stress levels low!!

10 Simple Rules to Guarantee a Healthier Life....
    1) Only love foods that love you back
    2) Consume high quality foods, but not too much of them (go for the highest-quality foods you can consume & don't eat too much of them; think, "Does this serve my health or does it hurt it?" before you eat it.
    3) hydrate your body and brain with 8 glasses of water a day (body=70% water, brain=80% water)
    4) Eat high quality protein at every meal (it helps balance your blood sugar), such as fish, lamb, turkey, pork, nuts, etc.
    5) Eat & cook with high-quality fat (60% of brain is fat).
    6) Go for smart carbs not dumb carbs (smart=low glycemic, high fiber, no fake coloring...dumb=pasta, bread, potatos)
    7) use herbs & spices like medicine (cloves, oregano, parsley, sage, thyme, rosemary, sage, turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper, et al)
    8) Make your food as "clean" as possible (read the label)
    9) Eliminate potential allergens (if you don't know your allergens, elimate gluten, dairy, corn, soy, artifical dyes & sweeteners, msg)
    10) If you don't have hypoglycemia, employ intermittent fasting. (don't eat 2-3 hours before bedtime)
    BONUS
    11) Find a routine that works for you and use it (and find 24 healthy foods you LOVE)
NOTE: It REALLY helps to listen to the entire video because there are little nuggets of wisdom interspersed throughout.

I taught basic nutrition to patients in the psychiatric department. One gentleman put everything I taught into practice. His diet had loads of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and quality protein. His depression disappeared. He later paid a visit during my class and brought us a fruit basket. I also told people not to juice because that's throwing away the best part.

Rules, my version of this video:
    1. Only love foods that love you back. 😅 Don't eat stuff that hurts you. (But remember: a chicken will never love you...!)
    2. Eat foods with high calories but not too much of them. Calories matter! Pay attention! Don't drink your calories! Stay away from soda, juice and bread!
    3. Hydrate! Drink water! (Drink water with a little lemon and/or apple cider vinegar if you need to loose weight, have problems with reflux or thyroid...)
    4. Eat high quality protein with every meal. (Beware of factory farmed meat!!!! Quality protein is lentils, hemp, fish (wild, not factory farmed), eggs (only from free chickens outside, treated well) Eat wild meat if you have to. Kill a moose if you dare. 😆
    5. Use quality fats. Fats don't make you fat. Olive oil, avocado oil and coconut oil is the best. Seafood. Nuts. You can cook with olive oil, but not stir fry.
    6. Go for smart carbs and get rid och the bad ones. Colourful. Low gi. Bread, pasta, rice and potatoes are not good; eat only very little and seldom or (better) not at all. Cloves! Rosemary. Cinnemon. Oregano. Sage. Walnuts. Go for stuff with anti oxidants!
    7. Use herbs and spices like medicine. Saffron! Curcumin. Turmeric with black pepper! Chili. Ginger.
    8. Make your food as clean as posssible. Avoid artificial and processed foods.
    9. Eliminate soy, corn, gluten, dairy, sugar, artificial sweetener to see if you have an allergy. Food matters!
    10. Intermittent fasting. Try 18/6 (18 h fasting, 6 h eating window 2 or 3 meals. Or 16/8.)
Teenagers are insane. They will never listen to reason... 😅 But he had a good approach. You have to discuss with them as if they are adults; with respect and lead them so they think it's their own suggestion to eat well... 🤣🎣

Dr. Amen please consider a study of teachers counselors and pastor type individuals. I was blessed to be a counselor during my military career and I know my brain was/is effected by caring for those that don't always care about themselves due to various reasons. I call it the Care for the Care Giver Syndrome (co-dependency on steroids). I believe this syndrome is growing as many family members and others are in care giver's positions and as result the care giver may pass away before the person they are caring for. Thank you and God Bless you and your family today and always! Mercy Grace & Peace! AAAmen!

Great advice. I'm starting to lean more towards just live your life to the fullest, mostly healthy, a little naughty. Life is short. My main focus is LOVE, de-stressing, breathing, hydrating, fresh air, rest, relaxation, good food that my body needs. No need to overthink it.
But I realize the US is a crazy place, not comparable to where I come from. You have to work a lot harder to cut through all the bs. For example, what public schools serve kids for lunch.... how are they even surviving childhood with that kind of standard? It's so sad.

I find eating to live instead of living to eat quite adequate. If you start obsessing over calories that's when your mind starts focussing on food instead of life.
I love your concept does the food you feed your body love you. It's simple it's not obsessive it's about self care. I never diet. I just eat healthy as my body guides me. I value & respect myself. I have found that quality protein truly does stabilise my blood sugar so l simply don't obsess over food. My weight stays balanced lm happy l don't get moody it works for me.
Having said all the above l add many years ago l educated myself regarding nutrition & l do pay attention to new information & update my knowledge of nutrition as new information becomes available. But honestly obsession over food is unhealthy. MY ADVICE IS DONT LIVE TO EAT. EAT TO LIVE. Thank you for all the good information that you share it's really needed in today's world. PEACE 🙏 & LOVE TO YOU.

Thank you Dr Amen, I've just found you! I gave up gluten, cows milk and yeast in 2001, long before such things were well known. It was difficult, but over 30 of my lifelong symptoms cleared up so it was worthwhile. I've never cheated because it isn't worth it
Most significantly, I lost a lifetime of depression and mood swings and saved my marriage. I thought I'd be better in a month and didn't dream it would be forever.
After one month I tried dairy again. That night I lay in bed wondering whether it would be better to throw myself under a train or shoot myself. That was when the penny dropped - my depression (since the age of 7) was tied up with dairy. I've never looked back.
Unfortunately I didn't at that point give up all unhealthy foods, and continued eating sugar in home baked gluten free treats. In 2016 I received a complex autoimmune diagnosis. After trying and hating the side effects of the ghastly medications I was prescribed, I upped the level of my diet. I've now cut out all starch, processed foods and sugar (except whole fruit). For a while I even cut out eggs, goats milk and several other foods while my gut healed, but I'm now so much better and virtually medication free. I sometimes feel I should write a book on this life changing experience.
Thank you for bringing this to the public. My life changed and I want to tell the world!

I learned on my own. Once I learned to eat in a time limited manner, my groceries were easier to get. Then I was able to get in every food line in my city and learned to preserve my foods. It takes incredible discipline and focus, but I wanted to live, and my kidneys were not in agreement. Once i became plant focused my kidneys began to heal. I lost 80 pounds and got my life back. And most of the changes happened in 8-9 months.

That is a misconception that poor people can’t eat healthy. I made a wonderful salad yesterday and the total cost was .98c. I also did a grass fed roast with all organic veggies. It was $5.79 a serving so if using conventional meat, non organic or home grown veggies then the price would be about half that. So for less than $4 you could have a great meal and it’s cheaper than fast food. A roasted chicken would be even cheaper. Cook with real food and it will be less expensive.

Dr Amen this was truly wonderful! I would love to know your stance on the following.
    1. Tap water - is it really that bad for the brain, due to fluoride? Particularly baby and toddler brains? Is a water filtration system a worthy investment? I’m in Australia.
    2. Formula - what else are babies meant to consume if not formula? From what you’ve said I deduce that formula is also harmful.
    3. Sparkling water - is it ok for a 2 year old?
    4. Coffee/caffeine? You didn’t mean anything about this, it’s a huge part of people’s lifestyles and diets
    5. Re what you said about juicing, I had no idea! I thought juicing oranges was good for my toddler and baby. Is the same negative effects you described of juicing fruits, true for veg?
    6. Fruit like banana, mandarin, mango - are these good to consume? Trying to find alternatives to giving my toddler a piece of toast
    God bless Dr!

The statement about the man that ate corn and had a vision of putting a gun in his mouth after 20 minutes. That's real for me! For me it is wheat! I call them my wheat hell holes! When you have a sensitivity to food like that, it puts you into a form of psychosis. It feels real. The terrible thoughts, the suffocating in your body, uncontrollable crying and despair. Wheat destroyed my life for a year and I fantasized jumping in front of a bus everyday while waiting for the right bus to get me to work. I knew I needed nutrition, so I went raw vegan! Within two weeks I felt like a new person! I added some bread back in, homemade sourdough at that! I woke up the next day crying all over again! That's when it clicked that it was the wheat! I tell my story as much as I can because I can only imagine how many people are suffering the way I did because of an ingredient in our food that we eat for almost every meal! I am not a raw vegan now, but I have stayed vegan and gluten free for 3 years now! I have dabbled with wheat a few times over the years and it always ends in utter disaster! Fun fact, I worked at Olive Garden and was eating their food when I spiraled out of control!

It is true that food can work like medicine. My sister in law cured her hashimoto with low-carbon diet, specificaly tailored to her condition. She was in a very bad shape few years ago, now all symptoms like chronic fatigue, hormonal problems, anxiety etc - gone! she is full of bean, and her 'diet' become rather a style of life, not only for her but for the whole family. Very inspiring. It's amazing how changing eating habits and food choices work and make you feel better.

@@mengyunli152 She started with several days of fasting and drinking only special nutritional shakes to DETOXIFY THE BODY. After the detoxification she started introducing a few differents/ foods a day, like veg, meat, dairy, fats... and OBSERVING HER REACTION on different foods/ingredients.
For example Kale made her sick, and her dietitian explained her that people with hashimoto shouldn't eat kale at all and be very very careful with brussel sprouts, spinach and broccoli. This things are considered as 'super healthy foods' for most of the people, but not recomended in big amounts for those who have hashimoto, because they can mess up with thyroid.
In General her diet is a low carb diet, based mainly on vegetables - raw and coocked, (alot :))) plus proteins from meat / eggs and 'good' fats.
The specific rule given by her dietitian is 'one kind of animal protein in one day', for example on Monday she eats beef for lunch and dinner, so she does not eat pork, poultry, fish or eggs on that day, only beef. On Tues she eats eggs (fried, scambled, cooked) so no other meats or fish or chicken on that day. This way her stomach enzymes can deal with only one type of animal protein at once and digest them completely, without clutering the intestines with noisome residues.
Optionally it could be 'one kind of animal protein in one meal' with a several hours gap between meals. So combination like Lasagnia with Beef and Cheese or fried Eggs with Becon are not the best choices to eat often.
Other sources of protein, plant-based like nuts, lentiles, chickpeas, beans, could be eaten anytime and combined with anything.
She avoids eating wheat and 'white' , high glicemic foods like bread, rice, pasta, and sugar (any sugars, brown or white) . She makes easy-and -delicious low-carb bread using mixture of ground oats, flaxeeds, sunflowerseeds, nuts, chia sseeds plus eggs whites.
After the detoxification she discovered some sensitivity / intolerance of cow milk, so she avoids some diary products like cow milk, cream or cheese, but Butter is OK for her, aswel as goat cheese, yogurt and milk. Its is her personal condition, not a general rule of this particular 'hashimoto' diet, but it's worth to give some attention to possible intolerances and consult it with your doctor.
Good Fats are important sources of energy in low carb diet, so she uses olive /walnut /sesame oil , cold pressed rapeseed oil, avocado or coconut oil, butter, ghee, etc, not so much soya, sunflower or canola oils because they are often GMO or not healthy for cooking.
'Sweet treats' are mostly some fresh and dried fruits, or deserts like 'coconut milk and chia seeds' gelly with fruit muss, pancakes or cakes based on ground almonds/nuts flower with eggs plus some fruits or nuts (dried fruits, fresh pears, apples, peaches, all sorts of beries, fruity musses or gellies), sweettened with stevia or a bit of honey or maple syrup or a pinch coconut sugar. Yum!
Important components in her diet are fermented foods, sour cabage, veg picles, yogurts, with active bacterias, a bit of some of it everyday. It is to keep stomach microbiom rich and healthy.
Of course hydration is super important aswel, so alot of water and all sorts of teas, black, green, and herbal (!!!) no more than one-two coffies a day, not so much fruit juices full of fruit sugars, but few times a week she drinks fresly pressed vegetable juices (for example carrot +apple + selery+beetroot) or other combinations. Smoothies are good too, but not made with kale, spinach etc, as I explained above.
This style of eating requires some changes in eating habits and some creativity, it includes great variety of ingredients and only some particular things to avoid, making some swabs.
Meals are simple but full of tastes, flavours, spices, and really finger-licking,
like fried eggs served with cooked green lentils sprinkled with olive oil, green parsley and garlic, beef stek or burger plus green bean/carrot/ asparagus with garlic and dill butter or some salad.... etc.
'Low carb' diet is not only healthy but also fulfilling and satisfying, and recently it's getting quite popular, so there are hundreds of easy-to-cook recepies in internet and dedicated cook-books.
The important thing in her style of eating is avoiding higly processed 'convenient' food and fast foods, preparing meals at home using good ingredients. And because the rest of the family likes her meals, it benefits all, just all family is learning to cook and eat healthier.
We cannot afford eating all-organic, but we buy these organic stuff that are used daily in big amounts and are not much more expensive, like carrots, legumes, green veg, organic potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers etc... and free-range poultry, beef and lamb, from grass feed animals.
and as much as possible we avoid products well known as the most GMO modified like corn, soya, canola, GMO potatoes...
It is worth to try and see how much the health and energy level improves, within weeks! Even the simplest version of this diet, with elimination/reduction of 'white carbs', alone, makes a big difference in how you feel and look, it changes mood and gives this feel-good vibes :)))
I hope it helps and I wish you the greatest health possible,
and having alot of joy and fun exploring low-carb style of eating, if you choose to give it a try. Cheers!

After being addicted to drugs for 17 years I knew I had done some damage to my brain and was having some residual effects. Been clean now for almost 7 years. But I must admit, the cost of the scans and treatment plan were impossible for me to afford. I can't just trust God to heal me, I need to start making healthy choices intentionally everyday. And so.. I'm down to only one cup a day now. Started yesterday and just had my morning coffee now and that will be it for the day, I have asked God for grace in this discipline and I'm certain He will provide as always.
