  • This episode of The Brain Warrior's Way Podcast features information, tips, and how to's on the 7 different types of ADD and what to do to treat each one.
    5 Defining Symptoms of ADD
Although not everyone with ADD exhibits quite the same behavior, there are 5 hallmark symptoms attributed to attention deficit disorder. Do you have any of these symptoms? In the first episode of a series on subtyping the 7 different types of ADD, Dr. Daniel Amen and Tana Amen dive deep into an analysis of exactly what defines someone with ADD.
The Common Characteristics of Classic ADD
Dr. Daniel Amen changed the way he treated his patients when he discovered that there are several different types of ADD, all with distinctive symptoms and in need of their own particular treatment plan. Through his work in SPECT imaging, he went on to categorize 7 different types of Attention Deficit Disorders. In this episode of The Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast, Daniel and Tana discuss the most signifying traits present in the Classic form of ADD.
What’s the Difference Between Inattentive ADD & Overfocused ADD?
In continuation of a series on defining the 7 types of ADD, Dr. Daniel Amen and Tana Amen discuss the symptoms and characteristics of Inattentive ADD and Overfocused ADD. Knowing exactly which type of ADD is crucial to help you determine the appropriate treatment and interventions to make. The Amens help you to evaluate whether you or your child has these types of ADD, and if so, what to do about it.
In the last episode of a series on identifying and treating the 7 different types of ADD, Dr. Daniel Amen and Tana Amen wrap up the discussion by describing the final 4 types of ADD: Temporal Lobe ADD, Limbic ADD, Ring of Fire ADD, and Anxious ADD. They also give you tips for how to properly treat someone who suffers from each one of these ADD types..

I do exactly what she does. You're excited with a conversation so you interrupt. Especially when you feel they're talking too slow and not getting to the point quick enough. You notice it in others right away but don't notice it with yourself right away.

    I have ADD.
Went to school to age 13.
I’m quite intelligent I have to admit and I can’t be modest right now. 🙈
Now I can study. I love to study but on my own.
I’m a therapist now, actually a coach. But I help people heal and empower them.
Without the broken home and without ADD, I would have gone to university.
    Now I’m 56. I don’t want university.
Because I have created my own succes.
I am specialized in personality disorders and trauma.
It’s unbelievable how life can happen!

Zebedee Rotten I disagree. She is proof that someone with adhd and anxiety can live a meaningful and successful life. She is lovely and she puts up with issues he has just as much he puts up with issues she has . She is a gracious woman not spouting everything out about him while he does talk about her issues publicly . She is right about him sometimes saying some off the wall things that aren’t necessary or appropriate. I keep up with a lot of their podcasts and videos. We don’t see half of what they deal with and work though together behind the scenes but the point is- they don’t give up and are still together , and because of that, they are a ministry and an example . Two imperfect people are doing their best to love each other and help others with unique and difficult challenges have better lives and relationships too. Both of them appear try to be as real as possible on camera.
That’s a lot . I don’t think Dr. Amen or Tana are unlucky. They are blessed and fortunate .
To each his own with hair style preference btw, if you don’t like it , you don’t like it. You know the saying- one mans trash another mans treasure . She is his treasure, not yours. Obviously for very good reasons .

    Thank you, thank you!
I realized mine with our sons diagnosis, exactly as you said.
I hate interrupting people and being late. I’m 61 and still fight it. I don’t like drugs and they don’t agree with me but now I see why my body live rhodiola, ginseng and L-tyrosine. I need to get back on them ASAP.
I’ve learned lots of great coping skills, I’m a much better listener but I still need improvement. It makes me feel better to think that I’m not just a rude person but having impulse control which makes me sad. But this isn’t hopelessness on my part at all. I was married to an ISTJ (I’m an ENFP) and he taught me SO much about time management and organization. I’m so grateful. Im different in that I despise drama and fighting and perhaps because I’m a middle child as well, but I work for peace. I don’t do the typical “shocking” things, I’m very empathetic and respectful. One thing that really helped me was realizing that I wanted to respect those around me and though I have my own weaknesses, my desire to be a cooperative and functioning member of my “group”…
I’m definitely not a classic case and have a complex personality (in a good way) with a little of all of these so it’s been harder to pin down what was amiss but I’ve finally gotten to understand myself better. I take all of the supplements that you mentioned (5HTP,tyrosine,rhodiola,ginseng) and figured out that my body suffers if I don’t have a little (organic/raw) dairy and carbs. I’d so like to get a brain scan but funds are an issue.
I’ve been able to function well because of getting kind information from the likes of you and applying it in my life! I wish my son could get a brain scan because I think he’s a mix of the rage one…😒
    Thanks again!

ADHD individuals usually seem extremely smart... of course not all... so they do seem to be very successful in life. We usually use our ADHD to our advantage and create skill sets around our behavior/personality.
But in regards to Dr. Amen's wife, Tana, her ADHD interruptions definitely distracted me...a 71 yo ADHD female, to attempt to listen and learn about the different types of ADHD. That said, if this episode was to teach us about ADHD types... and not to be "entertained " by a husband/wife comedy team... I truly didn't learn about the types. I am disappointed. 😢

I had terrible side effects from three meds. My natural Dr put me on a higher dose of DHA and phosphatidalserine. Works just as well as the meds, without the side effects. Not really knocking drugs, but there are other options that work. I've had a traumatic back injury, but I did notice that I had less hyperactivity when I was able to run. It didn't help my crazy brain though. I'm far more interested in balance in my life.. so the suggestion here to over-exercise is a silly idea imo. There's something wrong with the obsession with weight, food, and exercise in the world. That's why the eating disorder numbers have spiked.
Also, the "how to AdHD" RUclips channel has amazing coping strategies. Highly recommended. She struggles greatly as well. That combined with her excellent research is why I feel that she has a much more well-rounded understanding of this issue.

Omg I love you to thank you so much for your podcast loving this all the way in england. I'm having to wait 2 years for a diagnosis due to the waiting list here! I cant afford private but my son has just been diagnosed. I've lost a business because of my impulsivity and believe I would still have my business if I had the help I needed to understand and manage it. Thank you so much for all of this.
P.s i could tell instantly how much you love each other, the way you look at each other 😍 it's all in the eyes. X

My 9yo son sounds like Jarret 😢
We just drove to the Amen Clinic in Atlanta to have his scans done. To me it looks like he has Over-focused ADD as well as the Ring of Fire. I have OCD myself, and my sons maternal grandpa (my dad) was a drug addict and criminal who died by suicide overdose.
Our results appointment isn’t until June 28th because there is only one child psychologist at the Atlanta Amen Clinic location, but we need help NOW! Is there anything I can do to get a jumpstart on my son’s treatment? Any advice is so greatly appreciated Dr. Amen, thank you so much for what you do. So wonderful to finally have some HOPE after all these years

Doing the exact same thing everyday is like slow death for me. I HATE tags on my clothing or rugs even! Easily distracted, Impulsive, Spontaneous, Procrastination is probably putting me homeless soon. I have to wait 6 more days to see therapist/psychiatrist. I am TERRIFIED they are just going to put me on anti-depressants!!!!!!!!!!

NO ONE UNDERSTOOD ME WHEN I TOLD THEM I FELT NORMAL ON THEM AND IT EXPLAINS HOW I KEPT JOBS AND OTHER THINGS UNDER CONTROL TILL IT GOT OUT OF HAND BECAUSE OF COURSE THATS WHAT DRUGS DO. NOW IM ON A MAINTENANCE PROGRAM AND UNDER CONTROL

No, “all of us” do not have “ADHD moments” and a heads-up, most neurodiverse people I know find that type of comment off-putting as it is trivializing. That would be like saying, “Oh, I have MS moments” referring to tripping on something. Please don’t use disabilities as a means to describe non-disabled people’s non-disabling traits. He clarified that, but I want you to know from the neurodiverse community’s common take on those comments, me included.

Watching this with ADHD, it's like a recovering addict going to a drug party. This woman triggers my shame, my disappointment, my knowledge that I struggle every day with impulse control and blurting, and she is revelling in it and seems entirely untreated. Her behavior indicates that I will never watch another video from these people.

Do some ADD brains make the connection between stimulation and anxiety, creating an anxiety disorder that supplies constant stimulation.
I am finding that as I tackle my anxiety, my ADD seems to become more prominent, that hyperactive energy / jitteriness.

See to much, hear too much, busy mind, listen to music while studying, sensitivity to light, foods, noise, seams and elasticated wast bands, well meaning but diisorganised, interrupting, interrupting. One of my soothing methods is swimming in the sea daily all year round.
Some of these symptoms are also attributed to CPTSD but looking back some of the things I was punished for were symptoms i. e. interrupting (bright ideas, can't wait to share otherwise I'll forget,) fixated on things.

Tonight on Tucker Carlson’s show, he spoke about several mass murderers and the fact hat several were being prescribed anti-depressants such as Zoloft or Prozac. He also cited the increases we are seeing in suicides among young people, many of hen also being treated with these drugs. Apparently these drugs have some very serious side effects including increased anger.
The facts he cited were shocking. I was wondering if you ever saw the numbers he talked about? Knowing your background as a physician, I hought you would find the connection very interesting and if you knew about it, perhaps you might want to look into it and perhaps find a way to slow the prescribing of these drugs at least until more details are examined.

A D or F…it never got better. Years later became an engineer and had a very successful career but 3 failed marriages. … when I was 40 was diagnosed with Asperger’s. Due to cough syncopy had lots of head trauma. Now at 65 am having more problems with impulse control . Exercise helps but haven’t found anything that helps more. I have all of the ADD symptoms all of my life. Should I try Methelyne Blue?

When a woman has completed 10 books and has a successful career, didn’t really know she was struggling… where is the disorder part? I think that when someone is trying to do things and can’t overcome the struggle is where the disorder comes in. I’m sympathize with her anxiety, but I think she’s lucky to have the focus she does on her interests.
