    I own both the xt4 and the new xs10 and I owned the 18-55 , 16-55 but once I tried the 16-80 I sold the others and now my all around combo has become the xs10 with the 16-80. The range advantage is not the only reason. the 16-80 has character. one of the best color rendition and micro contrast and sharpness is perfect and shooting raw makes it the best travel combo for xs10 as well as xt4. f4 is not a disandvantage because of the six stops stabilisation with which I was able to take descent pictures down to 1/8th shutter speed.

      Same here. I use this lens with the XT-4 and the XS10. I shoot in NYC and the range is perfect for me. Tight shots on the subway? I'm covered. Big city-scapes? No problem. When I look back through my photos, I'm so thankful I can get in just a little more with the 80 versus a 50-55 which would mean getting a little too close to certain situations that I probably shouldn't. lol. I too agree about the character. It's got some real mojo. The only thing I wish is that it was a *tad* faster but overall, it's getting the job done nicely. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

    Had mine just over a year. Really like it and use it for everyday shooting, and especially landscape. On a tripod the internal IOS has no adverse effect at all; images are sharp. For me it's an all in one travel zoom. WR is fine; I've shot it on my X-T3 in rainy weather. No problem. For me it's a great lens.

    WR for the 16-80 is very good.
    i traveled with it in tropical rain in the iguazu falls with the XT3 for a full day of heavy rain.
    No issues with the lens or camera, all i needed to do was to use a manual air duster to get the moist out of the camera buttons, "just in case"
    This was 18 months ago and no problems ever since.

    my favourite travel combo is the x-t20 + xc 15-45, that lens is so sharp and portable, the combo fits in a very small bag, a highly underrated lens in my opinion ....I haven’t tried this one, although I was tempted , but it’s a little bit big and now that I am used to the 15mm ....

    Cheers for the video, again great to see the city centre again! Just odd for it not to be heaving. The range of focal lengths in this lens do seem great, though as I already have the XF 18-55 as it came with my X-T30 I can't see me splashing the extra cash to get this. Still get to have a recent video of this lens as most I could find the other day as from back when it first launched, not after various software updates.

    While I generally prefer using small primes on my X-Pro2, I bought this lens to use for events/traveling so I don't have to deal with the hassle of changing lenses, and I wanted something with a little more reach at the wide and telephoto ends + WR compared to the 18-55. I have not been disappointed the slightest bit. Even in low light, the IQ and autofocus have been better than I could have imagined. It blew the 18-55 away at f4 in low light.

      @@DamianBrown yes mate know it like the back of my hand, currently have the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm for my X-T3 and quite torn between selling the 18-55mm to pick up the 16-80mm for the weather sealing / more versatility or just keeping the lens and using the price difference to buy a 23mm f2 prime, leaning more towards the 16-80mm though I think having a prime handy would definitely be something that improves my photography long term.

    Great review. I don't know what all the hate is for this lens that's out there. It's a zoom that covers a wide range, and you are not gonna get prime level IQ. But all I hear is sharpness this, sharpness that. It's a lot more than just sharpness, and I'm glad there are people that appreciate the other good aspects this lens has. Especially, if you have a chance to pick it up as a kit, it's so worth it.

    Thanks for your (usual) excellent review; I agree with you about use...I don't get a lens for pixel peeping or shooting charts and brick walls, so someone who does that for a few hours then posts a review, while interesting, is not as helpful as real-life use.
    That said, currently the 16-80mm lives on my XT4, getting swapped out with the 10-24mm for wider pics or for stronger telephoto pics either the 50-140mm, 100-400mm, xc50-230mm(not wr, but good when a lighter wgt plus greater range is wanted...though am considering the new 70-300mm wr lens).
    The xt4 +zoom(s), with the x100v covers most things for me.
    Of course I also have access to my spouse's xh1 with a variety primes (it helps when one person likes zooms and the other liked primes). 😉

    The 16-80mm is my primary lens. I use it SO much, not because I do not have alternatives, but because it just so good. The range really offers a lot of possibilities, and I'm not complaining about the size. I would never just bring one lens with me, almost not in any situation. I like to have the possibility to switch out a bit, if it becomes necessary. Do I need an F2 or lower, well then I just swith to my Viltrox, Fuji 35mm or one of my vintage lenses. None of them are larger than I can carry just one of them with me. The respons in regards to autofocus, aparture and so on, it all just clicks for me. If I ever swith system, or should require a new primary lens, then I'll look for something that resembles the 16-80mm.
    Thanks for your thoughts on my favourite lens Damian!

      Seems a little backwards. I would think you would use zooms for clients and primes for your own work. I use two Canon 2.8 zooms for commercial but carry around an assortment of Zeiss primes for my own work (15, 21, 25, 28, 50 1.4 milvus, 50 and 100 makro planars). I’m back to Canon R and selling off Fuji.

    I quite like mine. If you can't get good images out of it, something is wrong with the user. F4? Yeah, 2.8 would be nice, but I often stop down to f4 anyway. The GREAT thing about the lens is its PERFECT zoom length. 24~120 is sooooooo nice and convenient. The "holy trinity" is a "must have" for the fact that you will almost always find that no matter the situation, you will want to change to one of the other lenses almost definitely. I've yet to find that with this lens. "It would be nice if it went a little tighter, but I can live with it. It would be nice if it was a little wider, but my back isn't against the wall yet, so . . ." It works in almost any situation as far as focal length.

    I have owned this lens for a month. I am not sure if I had a bad copy, but the IQ and distortion was a big turn off for me :( It was possibly the worst lens I have owned (owned the 16mm f2.8, xc15-45mm, 23mm f2, xc50-230 ii, 35mm f2, 55-200m). I currently own the 16mm f1.4, 16-55mm, 27mm f2.8, 7artisans 35mm f0.95, and 50-140mm). I traded up the 16-80mm and eventually got the 16-55mm. Very happy with it =) Hopefully other buyers of the 16-80mm got a better copy. If not, and even though I havent used one before, buyers might be better off with the 18-55mm. I've heard a lot of debates where it's optically better than the 16-80mm, sacrificing some range.

    I join other opinions who don't want to spend useless time talking about sharpness in the corners etc... I bought this lens too as a kit lens, feeling it would be my go to and most useful lens while hiking, best choice I could make. The WR works just great the built quality is very pleasing, found myself often under rainy conditions, the reach doesn't let you down either that's why you buy a 16-80 too right? The f4 has not been a limitation for me (yet) as I mainly shoot at daytime. I'll be using the lens in city photography soon, so that will be a good test for me as far as shooting buildings, people, at dawn or dusk. I wont use a tripod so at some time I might have to stop shooting anyway😇😉

    It's an interesting lens for sure but would not really be useful for me (considering the not inconsiderable price). When I visited Germany in March. I found my 16mm F1.4 was the most used lens with my 18-55mm basically made redundant. Now since then I've acquired more kit so for local walks (thanks Covid) 95% of the time I'm using my 16-55 F2.8 lens which I find on my X-T3 is a much better lens than my 18-55.
    The benefit I see of the 16-80 and the 18-135 lenses are primarily as one lens solutions for travel and convenience. They're not the best at anything beyond being a one lens covers most, jack of all trades. Which is useful if that's all you can manage.
    I've learnt that shooting raw with the X-T3 I can very easily crop images from my 16-55 and still retain great image quality. Far more fidelity than I need for Instagram, which is actually a low res format. So the extra reach of the 16-80 wouldn't be noticed but I would notice the drop from F2.8 to F4.
    So my current travel set up is the X-T3 with the 16-55, 16mm F1.4 and the 55-200. I like my Viltrox 33mm F1.4 but when you're traveling you need to be realistic on what you bring out with you when walking around and being limited to what you can realistically carry. While not having a massive bag and set up that screams tourist. Over time I'm developing my set up and finding out what works best for me.

      @@DamianBrown Yes, the 16mm Fuji F1.4 really excelled on that trip. I did some nice shots with the 18-55 but the weather became a factor and I realised that with the zoom not being WR. My camera started living in the camera bag. Not ideal. So I've reached the conclusion that if I had to only take 2 lenses. It would be the 16mm F1.4 and the 16-55 as both are WR. When you're in the moment and want to capture a shot not just for the sake of being out and playing. Rather for memories from a holiday that took time and money to save up for. I can't really afford to mess about and lose those shots.
      I really wish Fuji would update a number of their lenses to be WR and have better optics/focus performance. My next lens will be the 10-24mm WR lens I think but just got put on furlough again so not spending for a bit. Was hoping to get back to Germany end of the year or maybe a city break in NYC end of the year but seems highly unlikely.
      I'd love for Fuji to update the 35mm 1.4, 56mm F1.2 and the 55-200. All need WR at the very least for me to buy.

    I don't know. It's quite expensive and it only opens to f/4 and not further. I'm used to apertures such as f/0.95, f/1.2 and in an absolutely worst case scenario, f/1.4. Even my wide-angles open to f/2.8 and f/2, and they go to 9mm and 12mm respectively. I'd like to like zooms, but I'm too spoiled by primes.

  • @andreasschroder7880

    You kinda missed the point with the image quality issues. The thing is that this lens uses a lot of in camera corrections and that for some reason the issues Lightroom has with Fuji Raw files are even worse with this lens than with other lenses. So if you are content to shoot JPG there are indeed not many problems with this lens, but if you want to shoot raw you have to use Capture One or you are into trouble - especially when we are talking about greens, grass of foliage... they tend to get rendered comically bad. (And just as a disclaimer: Used the lens from December 2019 to August 2020. I only sold it because I use the 16-55 for work and because I downgraded to M43 for my personal stuff. And yes, I have more than 2000 keepers shot with that lens. But saying there is no issue with the optics is kinda negligent.)

    • @DamianBrown

      Negligent is a bit harsh when I was just considering the lens from my personal use. I'm glad you mentioned the raw files, and the comments section is open for these kind of thoughts! So thank you!

    This is the problem I am having with my Fuji kit. A bag full (16 f/1.4, 23 f/2, 35 f/1.4, 50 f/2) and no "go-to" lens, and with this all in my bag the whole mirrorless advantage is gone I loved the 50-140 f/2.8 but it's just a beast to lug around and always got left at home, so I moved it on. The 16-80 f/4 would be a "nice" lens to have but it replaces nothing and doesn't really do any one thing well. Fuji seems to content to roll out piece after piece of "jack of all trades, master of none", and I'm beginning to wonder if it's time to jump ship.

    • @DamianBrown
      @DamianBrown  3 года назад

      For me there's no worry about jumping ship, I'm very happy and I don't personally see a better alternative but I appreciate everybody has different tastes and plans :) What are you considering?

    I have this lens because of the reach it has. Not every image is going to shoot at f2.8 or larger.

      Yeah, but its aperture effect is more like 5.6, therefore none. I always prefer the option to isolate if I see the need. I carry all Zeiss primes F2 or faster, with an R body.

    • @garethmcfarland7244
      @garethmcfarland7244 3 года назад

      Why not? As it’s an aps-c lens made for aps-c sensor it has the same light gathering capabilities as f4 on full frame. Not the best for bokeh but that’s what fast primes are for.

    • @bitmastermac
      @bitmastermac 3 года назад

      @@garethmcfarland7244 I’m still used to 2.8 zooms. It’s not bokeh, it’s about subject isolation. If you’re shooting postcards, f8 all day. I don’t think I’d want anything greater than f4 on a full frame (One of my favorite lines is a canon 70 to 200 F4LIS), But the isolation abilities of a crop f4 is pretty much a 5.6, which is pretty much nonexistent. I prefer optical viewfinders as well, and that’s gets dim.

      As a general purpose walk around lens (and in my case freelance work for the local paper) this lens is ideal. It doesn’t have the weight and bulk of a 2.8 and still plenty sharp at f4 and it has a great focal range. Although of course when I’m shooting portraits or corporate work it stays at home.
