  • This is my first impressions video test using the new Fujifilm XF16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. Because this is a pre-production unit, I can not give my final thoughts on image quality, build quality or stabilization. I can give you a general idea of how this lens behaves and works with various bodies, including the X-H1, X-T3 and X-T30. I conducted this review with my videographer Chris G (aka @ChrisMeetsChris) down at the Lonsdale Shipyards. Please wait for my shooting review while I wait to receive my full production review copy. Thanks for watching and happy shooting.

    I've been eyeing this lens for my X-T20 as a general purpose lens. I have the 16-55, but it is a bit big even with the grip I added to my X-T2's little brother. Thanks for showing it on the X-T30 early in the video so I could get an idea of the size.

    Thank you for these demonstration.
    Contrary to what you guys are saying in the video, the image stabilisation while walking seems awful. The sharp corrections actually look worse than the natural jumpy movement of the human body; it's painful to watch. I'd been secretly hoping that the claimed 6-stop stabilisation might compensate for the lack of IBIS in the X-T3 and allow for occasional handheld, on-the-move video work, but I guess that domain is still held exclusively by M4/3 cameras with IBIS.

    • @chrismeetschris
      @chrismeetschris 4 года назад +1

      Pandora Productions hi there, while I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, I think it’s important to note that for lens OIS, it’s actually quite good - if you want to walk and do a tracking shot you’re going to need more than just OIS (which I can understand why you’d stick with m43)
      For the occasional handheld, on the go filming - the stabilization is more than useable, most of the time you don’t need to be walking with the camera, for panning and small camera movements while standing in the same spot, it’s an excellent choice for the xt3.
      Appreciate the feedback!

    • @budthecyborg4575
      @budthecyborg4575 4 года назад

      Fuji's stabilization looks like it's only optimized for stills and there is no video specific algorithm, which is fine by me.

    I already own the 16-55mm so ive gotta think whats the advantages of me getting this lens aswel aswel as getting this new lens,main point is the size and weight differences.

    • @chrismeetschris
      @chrismeetschris 4 года назад +1

      I personally use the 16-55 almost everyday for video / and photography and because 90% of the time I’m in doors... I need the 2.8.
      For outdoor and travel, the lightweight 16-80 and the extra zoom would be super handy, and fujifilm cameras can handle being a little bit higher on the iso, so the F4 while not as ideal, is still an excellent choice.
      Also depends on the body - I use x-h1 so I don’t really need the iOS, but if I had an xt3 I’d most likely be buying this lens for video 👍🏼

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 года назад

      What body are you using with the XF16-55mm f/2.8? I think that will be the big question. I have an X-H1 but I think for me, I still prefer the XF16-80mm f/4 since I rarely shoot wide open.

    form my experience i found fuji lens that have LM function can made a good and smooth video af and now when i see your review it's true , fuji 16-80 can't compare 16-55(and may be 18-55) for video af because it's lack of LM feature . fuji let me down a bit for release this len with a bit low performance but too high price.

      Chụp hình nghiệp dư hi there! I agree it might not be as phenomenal like I said in the video :) but in fairness, it was from looking at the LCD screen - that said, it’s actually quite good for OIS (obviously not as good as IBIS) but for normal uses, it performs fine.

      I think that’s how Fujifilm is marketing this lens, as a great video and stills lens. They talk about minimal focus breathing, which is important to video, as well as the 9 blade circular aperture for smooth out of focus area.

    Hello! Thanks for video. Whats better - xf 18 55 or 16 80?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 года назад

      I don't think it's a matter of better or worse, but what your needs are. I prefer the 16-80mm for various reasons. It has a wider focal range, more stops of stabilization, it's weather-sealed, and has a constant aperture. However, you pay for it in size and weight. The 18-55mm is a great all round lens but without the burden of carrying something big around. If you want to stay compact, go with the 18-55. If you want more range but willing to put up with size, weight and price, go for the 16-80mm. I bought the 16-80 for myself and it's very useful to me and my photography.

    • @andreichekaev
      @andreichekaev 3 года назад

      @@bigheadtaco thank you for your answer. I don’t care about size and weight. I had before 18-55, I liked his image quality in video, and stabilization was not bad. I think about 16-80, because focal range better. But I worry about video image quality and video auto focus, is it better than 18-55? Or same? Or worse? For example, I heard many time that video quality of 18-135 worse then 18-55. That’s why, I asked, what about 16-80. Now I try to choose from - 16-80, 55-200, or sell my blood and buy 50-140. Where Is video auto focus better? Thank you for your help.

    It is honestly not clear if Fujifilm claims any gain from using OIS lenses on the X-H1. They only mention IS “cooperative control” with the 80mm lens on the X-H1.
    They really should be a little more clear about this. I wonder how much it matters using my OIS zooms on my X-H1.
