IMO, if the focus is on a person or the design aspect of building, I like B&W. If it's graffiti, food or nature, I prefer color.

In 2016 I switched from my old Canon equipment to a Fujifilm X-T10 and the 27mm pancake lens because I avoided using the Canon due to the size. On my first trip with that Fujifilm setup I instantly fell back in love with photography. That first trip with the 27mm lens is still some of my favorite images of my wife and my father while we were on vacation. Looking at them now, some are out of focus and suffer from many poor decisions on depth of field but I still love the way they look and the way they evoke the memory of that trip. As technically poor they were, for me they were so much better than most of what I had done in the past. And it was mostly possible because I was able to pocket the X-T10 and the 27mm in my winter coat without much thought while we went from spot to spot and by just stepping back a few feet I could frame everyone in an image. Looking back now the 23mm would be better or even the 16mm but that 27mm has such a soft spot in my heart. My only gripe is the lack of aperture ring but what can you do with a pancake?

I think black and white is more compelling. I love it cause it's more dramatic a little more straight to the point. It also has a timeless look. but I also love color photography because the colors can help set up the scene and tell a story.

Depends on what you want to present, b&w gives much mood and maybe your feelings at the moment. But there are also beautiful colors on street that you can’t present in b&w.

I’m not a 35mm guy, so I have the 18/28mm glued on an xt20. I use all the others (12, 16, 34, 55, 55-140 on an xt2 with RRS plate- a little easier to grip with my long fingers. That little lens and little body is a great combo.

  • @ferdiyansurya

Excellent review! The 35mm is too restricting and the 27mm is the sweet spot. I wish they had made it f2.0 instead of 2.8.

Ferdiyan Surya that’s my issue right now. I have the 18-55 lens so I’m in two minds whether or not to get the 27mm. If it was f2 I would have jumped at it.

Jungli 999 if you only use for street photography, you can’t go wrong with the 27mm. But if you plan to use it for all round lens, then I would suggest to go for the 23f2. The extra stop will help you in low light conditions.

When i think about what inspires me about photography in general, i think color! Color and emotion. But, i have to admit, my favorite street photographers utilize black and white. My favorite TRAVEL photographers use color and extensive post processing but... in my opinion, when i look at their Instagram feeds, the only reason i love the color is because they're in a land I've never stepped foot in, full of that star-struck novelty and neon ecstatic newness. The only other time i like color is soft film tones. When i look at a black and white Instagram page, on the other hand, I'm looking for expression, emotion, creativity, and I'm quite honestly judging skill. That's what makes black and white fun. The photo becomes a document full of data, and showcases emotion and photographic skill rather than WOW those bananas are so bright yellow!

Omar, always watch your reviews, nice !!! That's why I like the Fuji X100 series, great prime lens, 35mm equivalent, always use zone focusing for street photography, so quick to snap a picture !!!! most of my pictures are from waist level while my camera is hanging from my neck. 1/500, f8, auto ISO, set to about 10 feet (will focus around 4-20 feet, somewhere around there) hardly ever miss a shot. Also, the little flash that's within the body, does a fantastic job filling in.

A useful shortcut for black and white stills in the X serie: hit and hold the display back button two seconds,,until fonction settings appear, go to fn1, and choose the film simulation for this button. You can go to A (acros) or B (monochrome). Done.

  • @BakaBox
    @BakaBox 6 лет назад +6

I shoot b&w almost exclusively for street (and in general). With the T20 you always have an easy way out if color turns out to be what makes the photo, but until then Acros is the way to go. I think your included shots "pop" more in b&w as well - "bike" shot included. That being said, I still prefer loading Acros in my super-discreet Nikon F4...

Personally, i find colors distracting when it comes to street photography where a certain subject/human is the main attention. I like to see emotions, context, stories or even certain abstracts of that picture and B&W is good in taking away all distractions and lets you focus only on the picture itself :) With that said, colors can be interesting too! I'll say shoot raw and have best of both world~

I use the fn button next to the shutter for "back button" focus, that way I can shoot one handed and still use back/side button focus. Works well on the X-E3 at least. I've also stopped using the lens cap for the 27mm, still got it, but the front element is so small and retracted into the lens that it's pretty hard to get anything to scratch it if you're just putting it in your pocket or camera bag.

Just found this. Great video on 'how to use...' from your personal experience.
The B/W works where color *isn't* the story, like the drinks machine and the duck's head in store window. Chess? Heck yes!
What I like to do is turn saturation to 0 to get a quick idea of what the photo looks like in BW, a very easy step. It can sometimes bring life to a photo I thought was bad.

Sorry, I thought just the building facade and the chess players looked better in monochrome. The rest were definitely colour shots. Having said that, my view is, if the colour isn't prominent it can be confusing, so go for B/W. Also, in my view, cropping is just as acceptable as any other editing.

I was fascinated when I got this lens, but after a while I realized that it does not worked for me much better outdoors than a cell phone . mostly because it does not isolate subjects very well (which has to be anticipated). I would rather have 16mm 1.4, despite facts that the later is much bigger and more expensive.

Hey Omar! First of all, thanks for posting fun and informative videos. Between your vids of the camera and The Art of Photography's vids about the lenses, I went out and bought myself an XT20!
As for this video, and your questions about your work and street photography in general... I love seeing someone show their development in an area they're not familiar with - you have to be brave to open yourself to criticism.
You ask about cropping - crop away! There are no rules, only good photos, bad photos, and photos that mean something to you (and only the latter really matters).
You ask about black and white - it's clear from the shots at the end that you see, and thrive on the colour in the world. Most of your photos fall flat when converted to B&W. The exceptions being, your mum in the Subway (though we only saw that in B&W), the chaps with the phone and the hand gesture (though, not a super strong image imo), the guy with the coffee (which is as good, but not better), and the chess player - easily the best B&W, and maybe the best street shot you got. The contrasty light with the eyes being drawn to his hands and the board work a treat! A beautiful pic!
Another fave of mine was the 50/50 architecture shot with the tree. Really nice.
Thanks again and keep up the great vids!

Editing jpegs!! Hell yeah. Except for demanding pro work, RAW is for folks with too much time on their hands. The time it takes on a RAW to get to where the jpegs come out of camera is nuts. Just a little tweak on the jpegs, Done!! And cropping is fine. Whats the use of all those megapixels if we can't crop in a bit, or even a lot, to get a better frame. No rules :) Oh, and I love my 27

For street photography I think black and white helps eliminate distractions and you have to think more about the main subject, composition, etc. Color is great though in some cases especially repeating colors, exploring with a mission of only shooting a particular color, people in wild colorful outfits, etc. But I honestly shoot bracketed a lot so I get both color and black and white. Just wish in bracketed, I could have black and white as what I see in the viewfinder

Thank you for being considerate of others while doing your street photography. I hate how so many photographers think it’s cool to shove cameras in peoples’ faces and take pictures of their angry grimace as you violate their personal space. Just like you, I don’t care what kind of picture somebody gets of me as long as it’s candid and I never know. I might even be flattered that someone thought I looked cool enough to warrant taking a stealthy photo. But if I notice them I’ll become very self-conscious and uncomfortable, which will also make the picture suck. lol

If you are chasing bokeh, don't bother with anything over f2, its hard to get, they are aps-c sensors. These are fun to use and thats kind of increasing a chance to get a good photo, than not bringing any camera at all. For bokeh and more serious work I use the a7r2 with some lenses and x100f, cos its "versitile" and I could finaly bring it with me in a jacketpocket while fishing, playing golf and so on. I loved the x-t2 with 35 1.4 tho, best combo IMO.

Yo, just bought my first camera this last week. It's an xt20 and I'm lovin it so far. Big thanks to you and your channel. I would say all the pictures actually work better in BnW.

I think when the light is good and there are strong shadows that black and white street photography works well, but I also like color in my street photography too. I guess I just go either way!

B&W all the way... I just left the Olympus M 4/3 world and picked up a Fujifilm X100 classic and shortly after that purchased an X100F that is such a sweet camera. Today I purchased a X-T30 & 15-45mm kit (at a great price), 18-55mm and the 27mm 2.8 and can't wait to have them in my hands... Enjoy your style with these video's. Thanks

Hey man, you should try this:. F8 and pre focus to 7 feet. Then only take shots of subjects roughly two arms length up to about 15 feet away. That should vastly improve the images you get! Also, don't sneak shots or look away from your subject when shooting. Instead, look PAST your subject when shooting. It will increase your confidence!
Also lens caps are nearly pointless. Yes they may help keep your glass looking nice for resale. But you can shoot with dust, fingerprints, crud, even cracks etc on your lens and they won't affect your images. Try it and see what you get. Kinda hard to crack your lens anyways. Gotta really try.

    Omar-
The shot that caught my eye most was the guy and the Snapple bottles. I don’t know if you noticed on the shelves of drinks the bottle of Pepsi drunkenly leaning against another one? Loved that little insert!
Sometimes b&w is necessary because, to quote the great Jane Bown, the colours are often distracting. But sometimes, also, colour is needed to enhance or emphasize a statement.
You do phenomenal work and I enjoy your instructional approach.

Channel gets better and more interesting each time. Some great street shots and composition, that Chinese girl is cute lol. Is it fair to say the 35mm is best for street and the ideal focul range. Been watching a long time and the funnies make the channel.

one unconventional option for people ( aside from the 56 mm f 1.2 ) is the 60 mm f 2.4 macro lens, cheap and has great bokeh, try focusing on a sheet of paper, see how shallow the focus is!! This in its own way gives great shots.( keep in mind on the APS-C bodies of the X line, the 56 equates to an 85 mm portrait lens in 35 mm [full-frame] terms, so the squashing of perspective, like on all telephoto's, has to be accounted for too.)

Try ”FRONT BUTTON FOCUS" by making your Fn button the focus button. It sits right next to the shutter! I set the AFL to Eye Detection, which I only occasionally use. Love your vids!

I keep the 27mm on at all times. It’s a little wide for everyday in my opinion. But it’s great if you like to get in on your subject.
I used to shoot 40mm equiv. exclusively, but since I have drifted to loving the 135mm equiv. So together this is my kit. One big old rifle looking camera and a little p&s shooter.

Interesting differences from the way I use my XT20 with street photography. I use the "flipflip" screen most of the time so it looks like I'm just looking at something on the screen and not actively taking a shot. I still use back button focus though and sometimes adjust with manual and the peak focusing if needed. I would like to try that lens though. Cool video....Oh and I do like the black n white for street most of the time unless something about the color image is compelling...with lots of contrast. :)

The Pentax DA40mm f2.8 Limited HD pancake lens is even smaller. It is only half an inch in length. It is all metal with quick shift focus. It is sharp and gives beautiful color at all f stops. Incredible bokeh even at f2.8

I like a mix. If i feel b&w looks better or adds to the photo i will make it such. I think the misconception is that if you make the photo b&w suddenly a mediocre photo becomes better and automatically becomes "street photography"

Black and white or colour? Depends on the picture, sometimes colour contrast can make the image work - other times black and white helps the viewer make sense of the clutter. I prefer black and white street shots most of the time, but plenty of times colour is better. Is it OK to crop? In my opinion, sure it is. Think of it this way - if it wasn't OK, then zoom lenses would be redundant as well. And the bike? What bike?

I have spent two different weekends in NYC with the 27f2.8 + XT20 combo and it worked great both times. The place is so huge that have that bit of 4mm zoom over the 23 is just fine, even preferable. If there is sky + building I throw it into bracketing mode and let Google Photos make an HDR for me.

  • @ThisIsWideAngle
    @ThisIsWideAngle 6 лет назад

In color the photos needed maybe a bit more distinct composition or even more post processing, so they will stand out more. Of course it´s allowed to crop. Everything is allowed.
Black and white is always an easy way to create an artificiality and separate the moment and make it into a photograph rather than a shot.

Just watching this as I’ve bought the lens to have a camera that I can pop in my pocket. I really like your ethos of treating people in the street how you would like to be treated yourself. I think that’s really important. I think too I’d delete any pic that could potentially embarrass someone if they were to see it. I think I’ll be more buildings and the back of people. I’m about as stealthy as a bulldozer. The B&W photos are really beautiful
