When you said the cats eye would be either a deal-breaker or a deal-maker, I think that’s correct. The somewhat swirling bokeh is the reason I ordered this. In general, I suspect TTArtisans won’t really be able to compete with Fuji or other OEM lenses across an entire lens lineup in terms of sharpness and specs. Where they could compete is in terms of optical character. My dream is that they come out with a 40mm f/2 with a biotar design, to lean into the kind of swirl that a Zeiss Jena or Helios 44 would provide, but with the convenience and usability of modern AF and aperture control. Vintage character with autofocus lenses might be a great niche for a company like TTA.
yes, some people hate the cats eye, but some would love it for it's character! Let's see if TTArtisan read your comment and maybe it'll give them some idea what to create next :)
Yes, yes, yes! I am thinking the same. If they try to compete just with price, they might have a difficult time convincing some people. I'd love for them to make a Helios like "artsy" lens. I'd buy that in a heartbeat. 😂
This is an excellent, comprehensive review, THANK YOU so much for taking the time & effort ! It's helped me enormously understand the characteristics of this lens, and in particular how it compares to the Fuji equivalent, when it comes to bokeh, minimum focus distance quality and field curvature. Thanks again, Paul.
I really like the TTArtisan. For me the difference between them aren’t worth the price difference. If the Fuji was $300 or under I might have considered it but the fact the TTArtisan is only $150 is what sold me. I was very surprised to see that it’s actually an excellent lens with a lot of character and probably worth a lot more than the asking price. I did get the 2022 upgraded version. One of the things I really like is that it has a USB port in the rear cap which makes it easy to upgrade and doesn’t leave an eyesore on the lens by having the port on the lens itself. I think if money is no object the Fuji lens is probably better but if you are on a budget you aren’t really compromising by using the TTArtisan and it’s a very good lens in its own right.
One of the best reviews of these lenses I've seen, my TT arrives today, can't wait to use it this weekend! Cheers to you Richard, you got a subscribe and thumbs up from me! Great work!!!!
I just got the TTArtisans 27mm two weeks ago... Its an amazing lens and the price is incredible for what it does.. One of the best 3rd party lenses ive ever purchased. I highly recommend

That’s a great review of both lenses. I’m considering one of these lenses and after watching this video, I think it’s going to be the ttartisans lens. I don’t mind a bit of vignetting and quite like the sun stars. Thanks
I own the TTA 27/2.8, it's subject isolation & bokeh @F2.8 is better, than the Fujinon XF 27/2.8, plus it does add some vintage vibes, in terms of rendering. If you want much better IQ - just get the manual focus Voigtländer Ultron 27/F2 - between them, i can't seriously recommand the Fujifilm for such a high price (439-449 EUR into germany), it's really less good, than the 23mm F2, into contrast. For that high price, even with WR and aperture ring, i'd put a bit money aside, and really get the Ultron, which is the much better lens - into contrast. But if you need a small, pancake-esque AF lens, the TTA is all the way to go ! (I shoot Fujifilm since the original X100) (edit) Be sure - if you own or want to buy the TTArtisans 27/2.8 AF - update to the latest v1.1.1 Firmware (Fujifilm X mount) which is avialable at their homepage. You can use the provided USB dock (rear lens cap with USB-C port to update the firmware via your PC) At the time of writing, this TTA 27/2.8 XF AF goes for ~125 EUR via Aliexpress, i paid really more into 2023 !
This is just the comment I was looking for! I have been torn between these three 27mm lenses (Viltrox 27 images looked great but I'm wanting a small lens), and your experience fits what I've been hearing. I have just about convinced myself to get the Voigtlander for the looks and the f2, even though it doesn't have autofocus or WR but that price keeps me asking, "Is the Voigtlander worth THAT much more?" Do you find you enjoy the Voigtlander for both color and black and white photography? From what I've found online, most of the images that stood out to me were black and white for some reason. I wondered if that was just a coincidence or if this Ulton was especially good at black and white or something.
@@el0blaino The Ultron 27/2 is really *that* much better - which does make a difference. Unfortunately, i've had not bought it yet, as for cost reasons, but played a bit into a store. And yes, i really want to get it, but as often into life, other things come first...

Fuji need a fast 40mm+ equiv .. I would rather vote for a 28mm F1.8 or F2 (to keep the lens small of course). But yeah, a cheaper and faster AF 18mm F2 would be perfect as well ~
I recently bought the TT Artisan and it seems really good for my purposes so far. My only minor criticism is that USB lens base. Firstly the updates don’t work with any Mac based system. A little annoying if you don’t have a Windows PC handy. Secondly, it adds some bulk on the lens. This little lens is so small that it’s easy to fit in your pocket but the base makes it a little more difficult to carry. A regular Fuji base cap fits on to it but doesn’t lock in place so you really need to carry a spare if you plan to go out with a 2 lens solution. Very minor issues of course, but slightly irritating at times :(
I really appreciate the way you discussed the bokeh, specifically not calling one or the other ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Bokeh is a completely subjective thing, and what one person likes, another may dislike, as another comment by theBitterFig illustrates.
I've been using the ttartisan on my XE2 for nearly 6 months, and I like a lot how portable my street set up has become, mostly shoot between f5. 6 and f8 so cat eye shaped bokeh is not an issue for me buuut vignetting has started to be consoderably annoying, I mean sometimes it adds certain "character" To the images but i would rather add it in post only when necessary, I regularly shoot the streets at night and the vignette makes everithing look too dark at night , so I'm thinking about buying the fuji, other than that the tt artisan has been really fun to use and has become the permanent lens on that camera.
Thanks for talking about that vignetting at night, I often find myself taking pictures in the evening or when out at a restaurant so the low-light performance is important. I'm wondering about the Voigtlander for that reason, because it is f2. But that price!
Great comparison Richard! In the first few clips testing sharpness, the brightness and color rendition appeared to be quite different between the two lenses - can you talk a bit about that? Is the TTArtisan 1/3 stop or so darker? The internal focus mechanism (vs. Fuji’s external) could also be a pretty considerable difference, at least for anybody thinking of adding an anamorphic adapter for example (so the focusing motor doesn’t have to push and pull the extra weight) and theoretically for better sealing, even though the Fuji is WR rated and the TT isn’t.
hey Jordan, thanks for watching! For brightness, since i took those photos outdoor and there was around 10-20 minutes from the first to last photo shot, the brighness might have changed a bit so i can't say for sure if it's the ambient lighting changed or the lens itself. Re colours, there is some small but noticeable difference as you can see in most photos.
For the price it's a great little lens. On my XT5 this setup is so small and light, I look forward to take it everywhere with me. I stopped taking my old Canon DSLR when travelling due to size & weight.

Thanks for the great video, Richard. I've been looking for a small 27mm lens for walking around with my x-t30. Size ruled out the Viltrox. The TT Artisan looks like such a bargain with strong performance at a great price, and the size difference seems negligible. But low light performance is important, and I'm hearing that if I can give up autofocus, the tiny Voigtlander 27mm f2 would give me noticeably better images and an extra stop of light. So I'm likely to buy a Voigtlander - but of these two ... ugh so tough! ... ugh ... okay, I'll get the TTA!
Thank you for the great comparison. Since I only plan to use this lens on vacations or family functions, I will be picking up the TTArtisan version. I think I'll put the savings towards other Fuji lenses like their excellent 33. 14.
This lens has a defect, sometimes the rear element is not straight and it prevents any AF / MF. Happened to me and many others on Amazon. To fix it you just have to pull on the rear element a bit and it will go back to normal
My copy arrived yesterday. It would not focus on my X-E3. I tried it on my X-T20 and it worked first time. I tried it on my X-T1 and again it worked first time. Tried it back on my X-E3 and it worked. Strange.
I don’t think the difference is too much to buy the Fuji over the tt if on a budget. Plus 27mm isn’t my favorite focal length anyway but want something compact for my xe4. Sadly I left my 18 f2.8 in the states. But I have the 18 1.4. I just miss a pancake lens on my xe4 😭
The Fuji 27mm F 2.8 is on the list of lenses that can take advantage of the 40 megapixel X-Trans 5 HR sensor. Can TTArtisans compete at that level for X-T5 or X-H2 users?
The TTartisan's sharpness is quite similar to the fuji. So if Fuji said their 27mm f/2.8 is suitable for the XT5, the TTArtisan should be pretty much the same
It could be verified by pixel peeping. It is a significant quality to verify for X-Trans 5 HR users who plan on the ability to crop without losing resolution. Many highly respected Fujifilm lenses cannot take advantage of the extra megapixels like the 16mm f1.4 and the 35mm F1.4.
The fairest review of the TTartisans yet compared to the Fuji. My copy arrived yesterday and optically in real world use I see precious little difference between it and my original XF 27mm. AF seems about the same if a bit quieter, though it would not work at first on my X-E3. It worked perfectly on my X-T20 and X-T1 and when I put it back on the X-E3 it worked perfectly. Go figure that one! The aperture ring is a welcome addition over the original XF model and on the X-T1 I prefer the slightly larger form factor of the TTArtisans over the XF. I could not care less about WR as it is going to be on my non WR bodies most of the time. Honestly given the price difference between the WR Fuji and the TTartisans, I can't see why most people would not be happy with the latter model.
the TTartisan got an unacceptable vignetting and bokeh shape and progression for my taste. also don't enjoy the design, I'm very picky when thinking of putting a 3rd party lens on a Fuji body. But hey, where I live it is sold for less than half the price than the fuji 27mm R WR, being on a budget and wanting a light street photography kit you can think of this and match it with maybe a second hand x-e2/3 ot x-t20/30 and that'd be good and cheap.
@@empirechenreally? I have been thinking of buying the Fuji just to get rid of that issue, I'll definitely try the new firmware before replacing my ttartisan
Really nice lens comparison. Thank you. I already own the TTArtisan 27mm, and like it. I lost my lens hood (or it was missing from the box). I'm in the process of trying to locate one.
Frequent firmware updates is both positive and negative. For security reasons, firmware updates are great... but I don't see any positives for frequent updates for objectives, seems like users are beta testers and the product is not finished.
I like the Fujifilm 27mm but frankly I think it is overpriced for what it is. I have a few questions about the TT Artisans lens. Firstly does the in camera lens corrections correct for vignetting on this lens or is just limited to Fuji lenses? Secondly would a larger third party lens hood help with the flaring problem? Thank you for your review.
I'm looking for a pancake lens for my xt30ii..i primarily do street photography and some travel stuff..not much into videos.. which one would you suggest?
Do you mean lens filter? No not really. Lens hood is the best for avoiding lens flare but if you have a light source visible in the frame there isn't much you can do
Have you had any luck updating the lens firmware to 1.1.1? Mine seems to be stuck at 1.0.2 even moving the bin file to the lens using the provided lens cap.
hi, I got this lens for XT30-II but when I put this on my cam, and try to take images it doesn't do anything and the cam doesn't take photos. I think I have to make some setting changes, can anyone help, i. am new to this cam n lense as well
I'm actually surprised, the price difference is greater than the quality difference. I was going to chuck 900bucks in the fuji one, but I might go for the 200bucks TT artisan one, especially since I'll invest in better glass at the 35mm range! Anyway thanks for the review!

hey Don Dan, oh I'm not aware of that and my sample is ok), but thanks for sharing this info and how to fix it, it would be useful to other users
My copy arrived yesterday. It would not focus on my X-E3. I tried it on my X-T20 and it worked first time. I tried it on my X-T1 and again it worked first time. Tried it back on my X-E3 and it worked. Strange.
Weird. Maybe something wasn't clicking properly? Or loosen during skiipping? But glad to hear it's working fine now?
GREAT VIDEO of the shootout between the FUJI & TT ARTISAN 27mm!. I have a FUJI 27MM and I love it. The 27mm is a great little power house of a lens...
On the newer Fuji Cameras (XT5 or XH2s) the autofocus speed is faster on the TTartisan lens as on the fuji lens.
Fuji 27mm is great but in darker situation, you'll need to focus manually. Focus peaking with this lens is very inaccurate.
Really nice review. One question, was the lens flare test done with or without the lens hood?
thanks! I can't remember for sure, but usually I would use the lens hood if one comes with the lens
Pancake is nice! Affordable pancake is double nice!
The Fuji 27mm F 2.8 is on the list of lenses that can take advantage of the 40 megapixel X-Trans 5 HR sensor. Can TTArtisans compete at that level for X-T5 or X-H2 users?
i saw elsewhere that someone said that ttartisan said yes on social media,
The TTartisan's sharpness is quite similar to the fuji.
Excellent comparison, thank you!
Thank you Richard. Your issue is quite weird but glad it's all working fine now.
Please TTartisans make a 23mm f2 pancake? Fuji doesn’t seem interested so the market is yours!
fantastic comparison, exactly what I was looking for! Thanks!
FYI the firmware can only be updated using Windows. If you use macOS it becomes unusable
Thanks for the info Liam
@@TheRealRichardWong absolutely the good thing is if you redo the update to the firmware using a Windows machine, it will make the lens usable again
Really nice work. Congrats. I'm on a low budget, so... TTartisans will works very well for me. Thanxs a lot!!!
Have fun with the TTArtisan!
Thank you for the review Richard.
the TTartisan got an unacceptable vignetting and bokeh shape and progression for my taste. also don't enjoy the design, I'm very picky when thinking of putting a 3rd party lens on a Fuji body. But hey, where I live it is sold for less than half the price than the fuji 27mm R WR, being on a budget and wanting a light street photography kit you can think of this and match it with maybe a second hand x-e2/3 ot x-t20/30 and that'd be good and cheap.
The firmware update fixed the vignetting
@@empirechenreally? I have been thinking of buying the Fuji just to get rid of that issue, I'll definitely try the new firmware before replacing my ttartisan
@@empirechenhow do you update the firmware?
Use the provided rear cap which is a USB dock. Connect it to your computer
@@chdezmtzno it didn’t. You need to apply the fix in an editing software
I wonder if they'll bring this one to other mounts. I'd love to have something that small with both a manual aperture ring and autofocus for Sony.
maybe! Will have to wait and see
nice review, Which country are you located? Which lens do you recommend?
I'm based in New Zealand! Which lens really depends on what you are after/most important to you
Excellent review and well explained. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for a very informative video!
“The explanation gave perfect details abiut the lens..."
Thanks for watching
Really nice lens comparison. Thank you. I already own the TTArtisan 27mm, and like it. I lost my lens hood (or it was missing from the box). I'm in the process of trying to locate one.
Thanks! From memory there isn't a lens hood comes with the lens.
Frequent firmware updates is both positive and negative. For security reasons, firmware updates are great... but I don't see any positives for frequent updates for objectives, seems like users are beta testers and the product is not finished.
Nice comparison video!
Thanks Andrei!
How about the older 27mm f2.8 (non WR)? Which one is better?
Good review! Thanks 🤙 TTA will be a great budget choice for enthusiasts but Fuji is only sensible choice for pros 🎬
As always a very nice video. Often I can see that the lenses outperforms the photographers
Thank you very much @Ulf Jönsson :)
There is exactly one advantage of the TTartisan: It's cheaper.
Kia ora Richard, thank you. Helps me make up my mind on these two lenses
Thank you Ray!
Hi Neil, lens profile correction works with the TTartisan lens as well
Thank you so much for this video!!
Thanks for watching
This was a great video. Thank you!
Thanks a lot!!
I used your affiliate link for Amazon’s big days!
oh thank you so much Jon!
why one test image looks brighter - was exposure different? you can't present such results to a viewer as valid.
thanks for the constructive feedback
Si hay mucha diferencia, y es antipolvo y lluvia. Y eso es tener muchos años la lente. Pago más por ello, sin dudarlo .
Great review, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm looking for a pancake lens for my xt30ii..i primarily do street photography and some travel stuff..not much into videos.. which one would you suggest?
If you have enough money, get the Fuji, it is the better lens. Otherwise the TTArtisan is a great budget choice
Very helpful thank you
Is there any type of limbs filter you can use to help with the flaring?
Do you mean lens filter? No not really. Lens hood is the best for avoiding lens flare but if you have a light source visible in the frame there isn't much you can do
Have you had any luck updating the lens firmware to 1.1.1? Mine seems to be stuck at 1.0.2 even moving the bin file to the lens using the provided lens cap.
I haven't try that update. i will see if i can get around to try that. and will let you know
@@TheRealRichardWong thank you so much :)
Excelente comparativa. gracias amigo
Thank you
Fuji already got great compact f2 lens
exactly what i was looking for lol. thx
What is the camera in the thumbnail?
XT3
fuji lens is way better, twice the price.
Ttartisan please make a 18mm f/2 😩😩😩😩
Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D5100? A referred me to this lens.
No it's doesn't it's for Fujifilm only
@@TheRealRichardWong An adapter might make it doable. 🤔
No it doesn't. Mirrorless camera has shorter flange distance so you cannot adapt a mirrorless lens to DSLR unless you don't need to focus infinity
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks. I just ordered a 35mm Nikon DX lens so I think that will suffice. Thanks for your tips and suggestions.
You can only update the firmware on the TTArtisan on a Windows computer lol
hi, I got this lens for XT30-II but when I put this on my cam, and try to take images it doesn't do anything and the cam doesn't take photos. I think I have to make some setting changes, can anyone help, i. am new to this cam n lense as well
Check the connector is clean? Does changing the aperture shows the updated aperture value on your camera? And see if you can update the firmware?
Good review
Thank you!!
Fuji all day.. unless that 3rd party can make firmware fixes.. i doubt it will sell much
This TTArtisan lens can update firmware and comes with a USB update dock. TTArtisan has provided a few. firmware updates already as well.
I'm actually surprised, the price difference is greater than the quality difference. I was going to chuck 900bucks in the fuji one, but I might go for the 200bucks TT artisan one, especially since I'll invest in better glass at the 35mm range! Anyway thanks for the review!
The Fujifilm lens is $400, not $900
@@SVNLVN let me guess, you're american? unaware of other countries or even other currencies?
@@JonathanAdami no... I'm Singaporean, but I'm using the USD because that's what the price of most products are based on. If you convert the fujifilm's to your currency ($400 to 900), the Artisian's price is gonna be $360 in your currency. Perhaps learn basic currency conversion before you assume I'm someone who doesn't know what I'm talking about? LOL
@@SVNLVN get real mate, you're correcting me ignoring you could be wrong hence my "assumption" which is more an observation. Currency isn't maths, Import taxes, different markets, in Australia we import from HK, JP, CN and so on... when I commented, I had both in an ebay cart, TTartisan A$239, Fuji A$854, do with that what you want ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@JonathanAdami you do know that Fujifilm has local stores in Australia right? You can easily find XF 27s going for under $600 in a bunch of places. If you want to import something from JPN or HK etc, it's just a bad move, because you're not gonna get a local warranty and you're paying way more for import taxes. It's not even a question.
The vignetting on the TTartisan looks terrible!
I like vignetting and I choke on Fujifilm 27mm price
just imagine 18mm 1.4 TT artisan
That would be cool!
Frustrating. Please make real lenses again. Real lenses, not image warpers + correction software crap. Thanks for showing the bad optical compromise to make them tiny.
Most of TTArtisan's lenses don't support/rely on any profile correction :)
zapatistas in new zeland!!! very good!
Dude put lotion for your hands!
Please stop testing cheap lenses on expensive cameras. Test on an XT100 or XT200 instead which is what the target group uses.
I mean there’s no real proof on that. Also all of their other lines of bodies out sell the XTxxx. I’ve owned the GFX50R and have my XT5 on the way yet I’m still looking at this ttartisan lens.
Me thinking on owning the TTartisans 27mm on my XT5 for quick pocket portability fun. And not my heavier Sony A7iii with a 35m
