I’ve had all of these incl. the 16 and 50/56mm options. I do agree with your choices for the 18 and 23 (resp. the 1.4 and the 2). For the 35 I would take the f2 as a generic lens, but the f1.4 for nice stills with a vintage look. As for the 16, the f2.8 is quite mediocre. Whenever you can, take the f1.4. The 50/2 is a great little lens and much underappreciated. The 56/1.2 and now the 50/1 get all the attention, but if you look for a compact travel lens that can double as a nice portrait lens, take the 50/2. I’ve sold almost all Fuji gear when moving to Nikon Z, but I kept the X-Pro2 with the 23, the 35 and the 50 all f2s. A really nice compact travel kit with sufficient image quality.
"Never ever confuse sharp with good, or you will end up shaving with an ice cream cone and licking a razor blade." - Bill Pierce I have or have had almost all of the lenses that Fuji has made for the X series. No. They aren't the 'sharpest' nor 'fastest focus', but they have a distinct image signature that is very difficult to put into words. :) Fun video either way and I'm sorry you stabbed your foot.
The 23mm f2 is something special. For the price, $449 USD, it’s a really difficult lens to beat regardless of brand or system. Solid WR, sharp all the way around while still having some character, the focusing is FAST, and the size is small without being too small. A great one lens for a one body set up

I can't confirm this, it's not lightning fast, but I'm totally satisfied. Not to speak of the bio-images it renders. They are simply WoW. I have never regretted switching from the Sony A7 full frame system to Fuji.
I got the 35 1.4 years ago and sold it because it wasn't sharp and the focusing on it was slow. Some say it is a magical lens but I have no desire for a vintage look - been there, done that, when vintage was current days. I want a sharp, good performing lens. As soon as the 35 f2.0 came out I got it and couldn't be happier. Much nicer size (to fit in my bag while on travel, for example), focuses quickly and, as a bonus, is weather sealed. Also, the 23 1.4 is one of my favorite lenses (sorry Chris, 35mm equiv rocks. Love my X100 as well). Sharp and fast enough focus but do wish it had WR. Fuji sure makes some nice glass.
Keep up the great work lads, and get well soon Chris. I’ll add the 35mm 1.4 is fine for static subjects and low light, but 35mm F2 allows you to track subjects moving which is a great for a candid look.
Yikes, now that's dedication! Also just to chime in as a Fuji user who shoots professionally, all those F1.4 lenses look and feel nicer, but they almost universally struggle with focus tracking and focusing in low light. The equivalent Viltrox prime lenses are generally much better in that regard, but still leave a little to be desired in terms of wide-open image quality -- but then so do some of the Fujis, except the Viltrox lenses cost half as much (or less), so it's easier to stomach. Bottom line is that Fuji really needs to update those older lens designs, both in terms optics and focusing systems, as their newer bodies (X-T3, 4, etc.) outstrip the resolution and focusing abilities and it shows, especially when compared to the much better (and more expensive...) Fuji zooms.
Sorry to hear about your foot. I have two of the lenses that were reviewed - the 16MM F2 and the 35MM F2. I bought the 16MM F2 when i purchased my first Fujifilm camera (an X-E1). Back then focusing speed wasn't great so going back to photo quality was the main issue. In 2019 i bought an X-H1 and then realized all the same issue with the 16mm F2 that you guys have stated. Image quality is best when stopped down and focusing speed is not good. I bought a ton of new lenses to max the camera out including the 35mm F2. Honestly - Its a lens that never leaves anyone of my cameras. It does almost everything well and i enjoy the results.
Same like me. I've sold my 35/2,0 because of it's massive focus breathing. I have no expirience with the 23/2,0 but the faster AF wouldn't help me anything if the focus breathing would be the same like the 35/2,0.
In short, none of Fuji’s lenses are ideal for video AF. and Fuji has major problems with auto exposure as well. Sure you could go full manual but if you’re that serious about you’d probably just want a cine camera

I'm delighted with my Fujifilm gear and have learned to live with the pros & cons (which all gear has).
Get wel soon. You are right about these comparisons, but it depends what your shooting. My keeper primes : F1.4 16mm, F1.4 23mm and F2 35mm and F1.2 56mm. Had the F1.4 35mm... but i went crazy by the hunting and unsharpness wide open..... and that noise.... not what you wish for during weddings, churches, live music, business reportages , portraits and even in my studio. Sold the F1.4 and got a nice silver F2 35mm with old school silver lenshood . And it always finds a tiny spot in my camera bag.
I don't know about the other focal lengths, but for ~35mm the Viltrox is a really great option having the wider aperture of the XF 1.4 and the quiet and fast AF of the XF 2. It's well-build (but not officially WR), still sharp wide open and cost half as much as Fuji's F1.4. Since it's a bit bigger and ca. 110g heavier, it might not be the best choice for smaller cameras (like X-E4), though, but it feels just great on an X-T2. Speedy recovery, Chris!
The best thing about the 35 1.4 is that it has amazing "3D pop" compared to the f2 version. Also I actually suspect you might have a bad sample since mine seems sharper, at least on par with my 56 1.2.
I half expected Chris would do a Jordan-style fetal position photo after the injury. Hoping you heal well & soon! Also glad you guys told the city to sort that thing out.
One of the things I like about the Fuji system is that their midrange glass is as good or better than other companies first tier lenses. Then you get to the red badge stuff or classics like the 56mm f1.2 and it's just jaw dropping good. I have the 18 f2, 35 f2, and 56mm f1.2. They all have given me amazing images with nothing more I could ask for. The 18mm is 24mm equivalent but feels wider somehow? It's amazing on a good bright day for street photography. The 56mm is a perfect lens. Forget what you heard about loud or slow focusing. The images it creates are amazing. I finally get what these bloggers are talking about with microcontrast. Tack sharp. Perfect color. The 35mm was the first lens I got with my XT3. It's roughly 50mm equivalent so it presents a normal field of view. Which at first can be kind of boring and samey. But its pretty damn sharp from 5.6 up. Small, focuses great. It's kind of become my baseline because it goes right down the middle on every feature.
I've gone through a lot of photography equipment and what I miss the most is the Fuji 35mm f1.4. Focus is slow as hell and not the sharpest but it just had a unique look that I always loved having in my pictures.
The 1.4 has some depth/3D pop that the f2 version just can't really replicate from what I've seen. So the 1.4 is better if you don't need fast AF or weather sealing.
Props for soldiering on, Chris. I speak as one who fell in deep snow, foot got stuck, tore a quad muscle, continued the video without a hitch. 3 weeks later, wandered off the same path to get a shot. Fell again. Would have torn the quad again but it's already torn. RUclips comes first! 😂
I really hope you guys told that park about the rebar, hopefully Chris' foot heals up nice and quick. Regarding the lenses I normally tell people to get the 23 1.4 and the 35F2.
Loving all the recent Fuji coverage. I went with 18mm f1.4 - and got the new 27mm f2.8 for a pancake option as it is smaller and sharper than the 18 f2. I owned both 23s but kept the f1.4 for the much better performance up close wide open. However, I suspect between the 18mm f1.4 and 27mm f2.8 it’s become redundant and I’ll likely sell it soon. I owned both 35s but keep the f2 because it’s noticeably nicer to use (quiet, WR, clicky aperture ring) and sharper (with more contrast). Be good to include 16mm f1.4 vs f2.8 and 56mm f1.2 and f2. I went with the 16mm f1.4 but still have both the 56mm and 50mm as they are very close optically and hard to identify a clear winner.
This is the only time I've been successfully induced to 'ring that bell' on a RUclips channel. Thank you for your sacrifice and good humor throughout. :)
Used to own the 23mm f1.4 and the 56mm f1.2 (not mentioned here I know), and they are the absolute best lenses I owned, optically speaking. Yes, af is not fast as Sony, but color, render, character... just gave beautiful images. Love the old guard from Fujifilm.
18mm - Get the new one if you can afford it. 23mm - The old one by a mile, especially if you care about close focusing distance. 35mm - it’s worth it to get both. They’re very different and both valuable additions. Bonus - Get the old 56mm f/1.2. It’s still amazing.
My experience from having over 50 lenses in M43, APSC and FF formats is this. F2 will give acceptable OOF Bokeh on a FF camera. That should be F1.8 or faster on M43 and APSC. Of course I usually go a half stop faster lens just to make sure I get sharp results at max aperture. An f1.4 usually needs to be stopped down to F1.8 for crisp sharpness.
Having the X100F and the XH1 with the 23 1.4, i can tell that for most pictures F2 its perfect, but for certain situations, that subtle DOF can make a difference. I used to shoot with a 5D III and 85mm 1.2, and when somebody walked by trying to find petrol inside their noses in a full body shot of a model for street style, that razor blade DOF was the deal.
@@BrendanEvan Honestly the deciding factor should be how short DOF you want. If you really want the short DOF of the 56 1.2 then that's going to outweigh all advantages of the 50 2.0. It's the kind of lens you get because you already know that you need it. The 50 2.0 will be better for anything casual due to faster focus.
Gotta say, I love the quantity of Fuji videos recently! xD I have the 35mm f/2 and the only complaint I've ever managed to have about it is that it's pretty soft at f/2 when using its minimum focusing distance, but it's fixed by either focusing from a little further away or stopping down, so it's never really entirely been a problem. Also, I hope your foot gets better soon, Chris! That sounded like a pretty nasty wound >.
Amaryllis... You got a point there which everyone overlooks. Every lens is optimized for focus at infinity. The MTF charts reflect the performance of a lens focused at infinity.
I own the 23/2 and the 35/2. The 35 is on my camera 80% of the time. I just love it. It's got faster AF, it's smaller, lighter, weather resistant, and half the cost of the 1.4 version. I just don't think that extra stop of light is enough value to make the 1.4 superior to the f/2
16mm/1.4 is better than 16mm/2.8. I don't care much about 1.4 itself, but corner sharpness increased with f-stop closed, so at 2.8-4.0 it has better sharpness in corners and that primary reason i got it
This was exactly what I needed. I just switched to Fujifilm with the X-S10/23mm f2.0 and would love to see the same comparison between the 16 and 50mm options. Take care of that foot, Chris!
“We can rebuild him… We can make him love shooting a 35mm focal length… And If we get to 350K subscribers by the end of the summer, you the viewers, get to decide which Pentax camera parts we'll use!” [Cut to shot of Jordan rubbing his hands together with gleeful menace]
Love your guys' videos and the forums are pretty much the only place I look when making decisions.. the 18mm f2 can be had for @$200 on ebay (I got a beautiful copy for 199) and being that I don't shoot wide that often, I can't see spending 4 or 5x as much for the 16 or 18 1.4 unless I win the lottery.. even if I had one of the faster lenses, I would hold onto the f2 because it's so small you can fit it in your pocket.. I can shoot almost anything I need to with the 35mm (50mm fov) and still bring along the 18 in case I need something wider.. The XF35 f2 is WONDERFUL.. I really didn't think I would be happy with f2... but because I already had the very 'fun to focus' 56mm, I decided to sacrifice 'character' and bokeh for faster, more accurate focusing for the 35.. I found a used copy for @$250 and I'm really glad I bought it.. the XF35 f2 is an absolute gem.. LOVE LOVE LOVE this lens and if you get in close on your subject it has really nice bokeh.. I don't really have a need for a 23mm, which won't stop me from eventually buying one, and having the 18+35 f2, I'll probably go for the Viltrox 1.4 to have the extra stop of light and a good reason to explain to my wife why I need another lens
The Fujicron 35mm f/2 is a gem. The optical quality is actually quite good and I prefer it over the 23mm f/2 which has the tendency to be soft with larger apertures.
Finally swapped my 23mm F1.4 for a F2. The size of the 1.4 is the biggest problem as I like shovelling my XT-30 into a small bag and the 1.4 is a touch too big to comfortably anywhere...
funny.....as an pro photographer my choice after using all of them : 18/2 (small an louder- to knew the focus moves) + 23 1,4 (because it's 23mm....the 23/2 is more like 21mm) + 35 1,4 for sure- sold the f2 version 2x times- (the look of an f4/50 full frame lens with no character )....
You didn't mention anything about video performance, I do both and I heard that the older lens has noisy autofocus motor. For 35mm is the XF35 f2 WR a good choice? What about image stabilisation? Fuji is funny that v few lenses have OIS - would that present a problem for video (or doesn't matter if I used a gimbo most of the time?)

Hope you’re good, Chris! I was surprised to hear that xf35 1.4 is a bit soft. I’ve shot with one copy of 35 f2 and two copies of 35 f1.4 and last one is way sharper in the centre right from 1.4. Corners aren’t that sharp because of the field curvature, but this is what gives it character. Is there a chance that particular copy has some flaws?
I’ll watch this later but Fujifilm is updating all three ancient 1.4s with Mark II versions this year and next year. the 33 1.4 will come first. i’ve owned 4-5 copies of each of these six lenses, both 1.4s and the f2s. and 3 copies of the 90. they’re all great. overall the 35 1.4 is my all time favorite.
It’s built into their taxes and more complex procedures have longer waiting lists. Plus, I don’t know anyone up there (my wife is from there) that solely relies on the Canadian healthcare system… A lot of them have supplemented healthcare through private insurers. Oh and I used to live there.
@@p3rrypm That's pretty much for glasses and dental though. It should be included in our tax system, but I've definitely made back what I pay in taxes from all the stupid things I did as a kid 😂 And I have family in the States lol (FL, NY and CA) so I'm quite familiar with the US system as well and it's speed advantages (thank goodness not for me.... yet)
@@p3rrypm yeah like Sean is saying. Our healthcare system is rock solid. Wait times are equivalent, they’re just drummed up by American politicians to oppose a similar system there. Our taxes aren’t even that much more than many American states. In fact where Chris and Jordan live they have one of the lowest tax rates in North America.
Same here in Aus, or the UK for that matter. Rue the politician that messes with Medicare. The conservatives try, usually by undermining, but the last time they ran on privatising, they were slaughtered in the polls. Private insurance doesn't make a lot of sense unless you want dental or glasses cover. But it's usually cheaper to pay out of pocket for that.
It just adds to debt and contributes to inflation of healthcare pricing. It's not worth having, better private hands down. Edit: I say this as a public healthcare worker that has worked nationalized healthcare systems in South America and Cuba.
Fujifilm officially announced the 23mm f1.4 will be updated i 2022 with faster AF and weather resistance - optical formula will stay exactly the same, which is to say; awesome!

Thank you so much for your great Fuji Reviews!
I love the 23mm f1.4 for video. Those who are high on manual focusing 23mm f1.4 is the lens to buy. It won't disappoint you.
The XF35 1.4 is fujis wonder lens, it truly does have something special! by far my favourite lens!
That would have been an excellent idea. Furious at myself for not thinking of it.
Chris should do some voice acting. I'd love to hear him in a South Park episode or something
I've gone through a lot of photography equipment and what I miss the most is the Fuji 35mm f1.4. Focus is slow as hell and not the sharpest but it just had a unique look that I always loved having in my pictures.
35f1.4 is slow but not that slow. I'm more than fine with its af. Love f1.4 version. F2 version is boring.
The 1.4 has some depth/3D pop that the f2 version just can't really replicate from what I've seen. So the 1.4 is better if you don't need fast AF or weather sealing.
@@chuc.dxq3809 agree, AF was very usable but definitely stuck out against my other Fuji lenses for focus speed
Can the viltrox 33mm F1.4 be a good option? Anybody know?
@@Elazarko never used it myself, sorry
Props for soldiering on, Chris. I speak as one who fell in deep snow, foot got stuck, tore a quad muscle, continued the video without a hitch. 3 weeks later, wandered off the same path to get a shot. Fell again. Would have torn the quad again but it's already torn. RUclips comes first! 😂
Terrific comparison of the three primes! Thanks...
I really hope you guys told that park about the rebar, hopefully Chris' foot heals up nice and quick. Regarding the lenses I normally tell people to get the 23 1.4 and the 35F2.
Would always choose the 35/1.4 for character- yes
All this told me was that I need both versions for each respective focal length. Thanks guys 😂
Hope your ok 👍, another great video from Fuji review tv.
Thank you, FujifilmReview TV!
This is the only time I've been successfully induced to 'ring that bell' on a RUclips channel.
Thank you for your sacrifice and good humor throughout. :)
Yes! Thank you so much. My foot feels better already.
I do a lot of landscapes with an XF 23mm F2, it is wonderful, though my copy is a little loud when focusing
Great video. Would love to see some more comparisons of other brands. And of course, Chris would have to get a new injury every episode.
I’m buying an x-t4 and the seller also has both of these lenses. Should I buy them?
Hope u get well soon. I enjoy all yr videos. A big fans of dpreview. Great job. David in HK
The Fuji 50 f2 is an absolute gem !!!
Great job! For a follow-up can you do the 16's and 50's?
Definitely need to compare the 50’s
And what about your 23 mm f2?
There’s more to the f1.4 than just the extra stop of light. There’s a reason why it’s considered one of the best Fuji lens.
I've got the fujilux 23 f/1.4 and the fujicron 50 f/2. hope your foot gets well soon
I hope you report that rebar sticking out of the ground so no one else steps on it?
He mentioned on Instagram that he did.
I had both f/1.4 and f/2 and finally came back to the older, bulkier yet nicer f/1.4
Simple banter, but works. Good job boys, good a good chuckle out of that intro :)
I hope you can get your hands on the third party lenses soon. The Viltrox 23mm 1.4 is awesome.
16mm/1.4 is better than 16mm/2.8. I don't care much about 1.4 itself, but corner sharpness increased with f-stop closed, so at 2.8-4.0 it has better sharpness in corners and that primary reason i got it
Great video as always. Hope your foot heals well Chris!
This was exactly what I needed. I just switched to Fujifilm with the X-S10/23mm f2.0 and would love to see the same comparison between the 16 and 50mm options. Take care of that foot, Chris!
“We can rebuild him…
We can make him love shooting a 35mm focal length…
And If we get to 350K subscribers by the end of the summer, you the viewers, get to decide which Pentax camera parts we'll use!”
[Cut to shot of Jordan rubbing his hands together with gleeful menace]
Band-Aid owes you a sponsorship now
Nothing better then the 35mm F1,4 !! It’s real magic !!
Hear hear!
True
Great stuff as always--best camera reviewers there are in the RUclips world!
Ouch! Thank you so much for the video to help with my exact dilemma. I hope your foot is well soon! That looked mighty painful.
So..In your next video will you be reviewing the best first-aid kit to carry in our camera bag ?
This is a passionate professional! Half dead but getting his job done until the end! 🙌🏻
Thinking of getting the 35mm F2, but daaaymn the price, I think I gotta go for the viltrox 33mm f1.4
I'm always amazed by the quality/price of Fujifilm (lens and camera) that the reason i could never sell my xt-4. I hope you will be ok with your foot.
I have 3 F2 lenses, 16, 35 and 50. Frankly, I am very happy with the results. My pocket book is as well. 🤣😉
Me too. Plus a very beat up original 27.
Got a 35 f1.4 in perfect condition for less than the brand new price of the f2. You got to try the f1.4. I sold my f2 for it and I never look back. 🙂
I am new to Fuji and this was a GREAT review and put the lenses into an understandable context.
shoulda reviewed the 50f2, amazing lens : D
Thanks for the review, it’s really helpful! I hope Chris’s foot feels better!
great video, what about 16 f2.8 vs f1.4
and f50 2 vs 56 f1.2 ?
Fuji have spoiled us with too many options :)
Thanks Chris, and great review! I'm looking at these three ranges currently. Btw, Canada's health care is far from free. Canadians can verify this by how much is sucked out of their paycheck. Be well!
Wishing you a speedy recovery. Great video, wish you included the 16mm lenses
Could we see a similar video for the Sigma 19, 30, and 60mm 2.8 primes versus the 16, 30, and 56mm 1.4 primes?
Would be amazing if you could redo this video for the 2023 lineup. Maybe skip the injury this time 😅
I stepped into a rusty nail once that went right through the sole of my shoe and deep into the ball of my foot. That was fun. It was sticking upward out of a board that was hidden among some leaves in a forest. Great surprise! Get better soon!
Great information as always. Sorry about your foot, pretty messed up that it was just left buried in the ground in a city park area. OK about the free health care, curious to know how your care when, how long you waited, how thorough the care was.
Hi Chris,
Hope your wound is getting healed.
Until last month i was planning to buy the Nikon Z50 as my first camera then i saw read and view Fuji Film X s10 , what will be your suggestion regarding to the system ,Lenses and ease of use and value for money as well. (Photo centric camera )
Hey, it's the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. Mount Vernon is my hometown, funny to randomly run across such a familiar image here on youtube.
Huge flex to end the episode with socialized Canadian health care. :-) Great video thanks!
Why so many copies of the same lenses? What's happening to them? Do you throw them at people?
Ohh man! Wish you a fast recovery!
Video was also great 😂😂
Great comparison ! If you have to choose only one all rounder lens then what would it be? 23mm F2 or 35mm F2?
He just roasted America with that healthcare part lmao. Time to be Canadian.
It should be included in our tax system, but I've definitely made back what I pay in taxes from all the stupid things I did as a kid 😂
And I have family in the States lol (FL, NY and CA) so I'm quite familiar with the US system as well and it's speed advantages (thank goodness not for me....
I'm switching to Sony but I see a Chris and Jordan upload and I click!
Fujifilm officially announced the 23mm f1.4 will be updated i 2022 with faster AF and weather resistance - optical formula will stay exactly the same, which is to say; awesome!
Love you guys… so refreshing to watch…
Save me trading through all your videos, have you ever covered the Fuji 18-55 2.8-4.5 lens?? Thinking of replacing the 15-45 kit lens but not sure of the benefits??
Also I’ve got Viltrox 23mm and 56mm primes and love results so far but would love you guys to get reviews done on these as your reviews make for great watching… plus your views on recording video with these??
Keep up the great work guys!!! 🤩📷
Sorry to hear about Chris' foot. I hope everything turns out well for him.
I have the 23mm F2 and it's my favorite lens. It's a bit disheartening to see how much worse it is optically compared to the F1. 4 in that side by side comparison picture. But it could just be that one picture. In other comparison reviews between these two lenses, the optical performance generally are very similar.
Late but: The f2 is waaaaay more soft in the center. It's small, light and sexy in silver :) but the point for optical quality (sharpness) goes clearly to the 1.4 ;)
The 23/2 is the cutest puppy of the lot!
Very interesting comparisons. many thanks. Is there a Fuji lens that gives the full frame’ 50mm ‘look’ please?
viltrox 23mm is really great, glad i didn't pay twice as much for the official one, needed to save my money to afford the 8-16
I have been putting off getting a new password for my account for quite awhile now but after seeing that foot casualty I actually decided to go through the process and sign in lol hope it heals quick love from Edmonton
Please make a video on Panasonic MFT lenses.
