Just some observations from 50-plus years of shooting, one thing that would make the lens used apparent or not apparent to the viewer is their familiarity with the environment in the photo. If they don't know how close or far apart the elements are, then judging compression or expansion is not easy. I missed 3 photos in your video because I could not mentally see the space in the foreground, middle ground and background as a "known" thing, being unfamiliar with that locale.
Second observation: if you have either lens on your camera, it can work. It is only when you have both that choices clutter the mind.
Third observation: the 27mm renders this all moot. 😊
35mm is great. Only time it suffers is in more intimate distances. Over dinner tables or tight rooms. 23mm will do indoors better and it's not to bad to crop back into 35mm if something is further away.
YES!!! You nailed what I was thinking lol, the only weakness of the 35mm for me is when you're indoors... but when you're outside, it really is the perfect lens no matter what the distance is. I'm yet to try the 23mm tho, so far I've tried the 27mm pancake and currently using the 25mm 7artisans as a backup for the 35mm.
I struggle with the 23 vs 35 decision. My solution was to preorder the x100vi.

Fun video! I have these two lenses and enjoy them both. The way I look at it, you get 23mm (35 equivalent) if you shoot more often the environment/landscape or people in their environment. Get the 35mm (50 equivalent) for if you shoot more portraits or subjects that are “across the street”. This is just a guide not a set rule. Cheers!

This is the best 23/35 comparison video ever, Omar.I have the Fuji 35 f2 & the 23 1.4 LM WR . While on vacation in Europe last summer ,I exclusively used my recently purchased 18-135 with great success. My thought was that this was going to be a one time visit to this area & changing lenses frequently was not an option at the time.I will start using the 2 primes locally though as the IQ is excellent. Enjoyed the video, as always!
have the same setup re 35 f2 and 23mm f1.4 lm wr. but brought the 23 and 56 to Taiwan instead. i feel like 35mm is way too close to 23mm.
I have the same: 35 f2 (love this little gem), and recently I bought the 23 1.4 (Sigma) for indoor photos of my kid.
@@bruchino any regrets because of the missing aperture ring?? The sigmas seem such a good price and! quality option to me but I fear so much to make a step away from the Fuji mentality and buy a lens without a aperture ring
35mm for subjects 23mm for story.
The 23mm f2 was my first Fuji lens. Though I've also picked up a couple of zooms, I mainly either shoot with the 23mm or the 50mm f2. This video is timely as I've been wondering lately I'm missing out on something in a 35mm prime. While I love the 35mm photos you shared, this helped me to see that I may prefer the character and versatility of the 23mm to capture the subject in their environment.
For city breaks, I use my small and sharp Fuji 27mm 👌🏻

Great clip as always Señor Omar ! The 23mm f/2 is the only prime I have for Fujifilm but I think I'd be happy with either focal length - they both look great.
The Brompton in front of the brick wall at 1:29 says it all. The 23 has easily identifiable distortion. My preferred is a 35 2.0 but Ive been using the 23 2.0 for 5 years exclusively.

Omar, I love when you do these visual signature comparaisons. I'd love to see the tacky one between 28 and 35 (18 and 23). I'm trying to find someone you ever did but in vain.
I found out that I don't like 23mm and I don't like 35mm. The 27mm although are just great.
Got a 40mm f2 for Nikon Z and love it.
The Fujifilm 35mm f2 is my favorite Fujifilm lens thus far.

I was actually shocked how quickly I could identify a 23mm photo but I also nearly exclusively used the X100V for 2-3 years so I guess all that practice did something

For me 18mm f2 is way more useful for everyday life and family photos!

If I had to pick one, I'd take the 23mm. I prefer to have a bit of extra width available and then "zoom" with my feet a bit if necessary.
I own the 23 and the 35 f2, my rule of thump is, 23mm for the indore shoots and the 35mm for outdoor shoots.

Dude, this is a fantastic video. I knew every one except the beer sign with nothing but sky in the background! (And I didn’t answer in time on the cropped Incredibles one, which was probably about a 27 cropped from the 23.) And man…I ALWAYS prefer the 35. I knew this, but this video really drove home the point that I’m a 50mm ff equiv man rather than a 35mm ff equiver. Thanks, Omar!
There's a massive difference. It's obvious which photos are 35mm.
Thanks, Omar! I was always afraid of missing "the shot" with a prime, so the 24-70 was my first choice. When I surveyed my shots, not many were at the 24 range, and like yourself, those that were, I cropped. I made the fatal mistake of renting the Nikkor 28mm f/1.4. The added weight was more bearable than the price tag. Time to start saving up!

Hi Omar, i had both and found I did not use the 35 that much (although a very nice lens) so I sold both and have just order the 27mm (mark one) just waiting for it to arrive.
This will be paired with the 14mm f2.8 and the Laowa 9mm f2.8. I like it wide.

Great video. I’ve generally preferred a 50mm (Full frame field of view) as opposed to a 35mm. Of late in shooting more street photography I’ve come to appreciate wider angles. By the way great shot of the Blondie mural at the old cbgb club. I’ve photographed that same scene many times. I can’t walk in that area and not shoot it. Anyhow very good video !
I started with a 50 on full frame. Shot with it for many years. Finally got a 35 and never used the 50 again
I find the 23mm gives excessive flaring at wide aperture, even when using a lens hood. I’ve ruined too many shots that way. My shots with the 35mm are cleaner.
They are both great - but I've always had more of that 'feeling' with 23mm (35 ff equiv). I feel like you can tell more of a story in tight spaces being able to get more background in the frame.
That was fun. We watched this at dinner and had a raucous time guessing the focal lengths. It devolved into gambling and recriminations but still it was fun.
If I had to pick one for myself, I'd pick 23mm. When I travel, I bring my 10-24 and 35.

Having fun taking photos is what it’s all about the camera we use is not important this comes over in your videos also a bit of education for us viewers doesn’t do us any harm, good work.
I feel like it'd be interesting to see 23mm on the crop vs 35mm on the full frame, as I think people don't really think about anything but field of view & "depth of field" being the differences, but I think compression & distortion is the thing that not enough people think about, and make a big difference to the feeling.
So, since all photos are taken on crop sensor cameras, the 23 is 35 and 35 is 50 mm full frame equivalent, corrrect?

Thanks, I carry 35 and 50mm on aps-c. For wider I use my iPhone because wider is rarely a fantastic picture.
All along I was expecting a 27mm curve ball. :)
Maybe the question is not whether you can spot it or not but what it allows you to do. In street photography I use the 35 when I am focusing on specific people's expressions or detail but due to narrow streets it is nearly impossible to put city context in the picture. With the 23 I focis more o. The whole scene including the context, if that makes sense.
23mm is awesome, it gives some context for portraits. I don't like 35mm's compression. Like it's not too wide, but not too tight at the same time.
But thanks for an idea at 13:30 with 35mm, it's not bad for taking pics across the street!

Portraits are more pleasing with the 35, easier to isolate subjects from other stuff and don’t need to get too close to the subject.
But I use X100V’s 23mm mostly because I can get more scenery into the photo, easier to shoot indoors and obviously the X100 goodness. Sometimes I even prefer the WCL for more scenery and tighter spaces. It’s more of a practical decision for me.
If I had to choose one only, it will still be the 23 as you can always crop if you can’t get close enough to the subject, as there’s just a lot of places where 35 is too tight.
Personally I wouldn't pitch one against the other they are complimentary. The primes I use the most are 23mm & 35mm, they are different enough to own both but close enough to keep continuity in the work. I would willingly go the rest of my days with just these two lenses. I'd love to see more 23mm & 35mm vids than 23mm vs 35mm vids.
Great pictures! I thought I would have an easier time picking out which was which, but my hit rate went down in the middle there!
Great video Omar, it brings us back in time to the origins of your RUclips channel! Thanks also for this practical comparison. Regarding lens tests, I think sample photos bring much more than those sterile reviews making sharpness tests by zooming in to 400% to identify possible chromatic aberrations or softness in the very corners. It's simply not practically useful. Sample galleries point out what you can do with those lenses in real life where critical sharpness is most often only secondary.
Documenting my kids is tough on anything over 35mm FF equivalent. Unless its a dedicated portrait session of them.
Im even leaning towards the Z 26 or 28 for Nikon as my 35 is often too tight to capture the story I want
23 mm in terms of compression, is 23 mm optically, cropped or full frame, or medium format. The optical attributes of focal length do not change with sensor crop factor, it’s only the field of view that does…

I have the 35, but sometimes wish I’d gotten the 23 instead. The local camera only had a 35 when I decided I wanted my first AF instead of MF lens for Fuji, so I went with that, and I love it. There’s no flaw with the 35 that makes me regret it, except this: if I went with the 23/2 over the 35/2, it’d be easier to justify getting the 35/1.4.
Yeah, 23mm is definitely the most versatile, it wins on indoors/table scenes, even the 27 feels a lot wider when you can't back up.
A couple years ago, I did a test with two manual primes, a 25 and a 35mm, to see which focal length more suits me so I would later buy the XF version, took a bunch of walks with both lenses. I ended up liking the 25's more by virtue that I could breath more in scenes, so I got an XF23 F2
If you can only buy one, I’d say 35mm.
The 23mm is more versatile, but if you have a decent phone camera, it’ll give you decent pictures of that feel. But the 35mm will stand out more for sure.

At the moment I have my X-E2 with the 35mm 1.4 (I love that combo) around my neck and my X-T3 with the 16-80mm (I like that combo) in a bag or buckled to my rucksack strip.
That's fun! Shooting with the X-E2 and 35mm mainly. If that doesn't work out, I take the X-T3 with the zoom (often put the focal length to a specific value, e.g. 23mm or 50mm I would love of zooms would click there)
The wider compression of the 23 mm - making the foreground wider compared to background - is a bit exaggerated for my liking.. it works for product/hero shots, but for anything else it borders on too wide to be natural-looking. I have the 23 mm Fuji lens, and 35 mm 1.2 voigtländer for Fuji, and prefer the look of 35 mm for most things. I also have, but nearly never use, the 10-24 mm… for those cases I go to GFX and wide lenses for that system… 17 mm f4 being the widest for the moment.
thanks. great help. guessed all but 1. now i’m sure i really don’t want the 23mm. the perspective feels artificial and exaggerated to me. clearly i prefer the look and feel of 35mm so i’ ll stock to what i have.
I just sold my x-t20 for an x-pro2, just because I needed the WR and fell in love with RF cameras. Which I started to use as an analogue RF with an 35 (on full frame) and a 50mm which first gave me the whole comparison between 50 equiv. and 35 equiv and to be honest I couldn't choose. i only own the 35 f2 for my fuji (so 50 equiv) but since owning the lenses for analogue I miss a 35 equiv. Not because I like it more than the 50 equiv but both are fun to use but somewhat dictate how you approach shooting. So I change depending on mood. Concentrating more on isolated subjects or fast graps of the scene. I used to play around with wider and narrower lenses but in the end those two are the ones I stick to. Even more than the fuji 27mm f2.8 (40equiv) which I sold. It's true that it's not about the lense but what you do with it. And 35 equiv being slightly wider than the human field of view and 50 equiv being slightly narrower made those to focal length the most versatile for me. Sparking inspiration while not being too much bound to a certain use case. i guess it's only a question of time until I get a 23mm for my fuji.
I am shocked that could guess correctly 4/5 times, because I own my first ever camera since January 2024. It's Fujifilm X-S10 with XF 18-55 f/2.8.
You were talking about feelings more than facts for these and I definitely gravitate towards all the 35mm pictures, the 23mm ones don't look as artistic to me. I've been looing around not knowing what to take to replace my kit lense (15-45mm) and I feel 35 will be it (it makes sense I guess as I shot with a prime 50mm on my Canon EOS-R and i'm just used to that look I guess...but i always find it to hard in tight cities to get wider shots of the 50mm....god i don't know what to do lol). I don't really like walking around with heavy bags and having to swap a lense sounds annoying to me, but at the same time I don't want to have too big a lense for my XT-30II - would the 35mm be the best all rounder for style, versatility and size/weight ? Or is it too cropped ?
My whole system is sony but because of you Omar, i dream of one day finding a cheap fuji to play with

The 23mm is nice, better than the kit (which is good), it’s generally like a nicer version of a picture I could have taken with my phone.
So the 23mm is technically more versatile, but when taking pictures loved ones, it just feels nicer, more intimate and nice. If I can use the 35mm, I almost always have keepers, but with the 23mm I’ll capture more, but will feel like, my phone would also have been able to capture the scene (just not quite as nice).
Roughly, I think about it (in Fuji X):
16-23mm = overview or I’m in the scene
35 = I’m besides the scene or portrait, but I’m at least kinda part of the story
50+ = I’m not part of the scene, giving a nice look from the outside.
I absolutely love the colors you capture. If I were too close to you I might (probably would) scare you 😂 so I’m waiting for delivery of my proud to own xf33 1.4🎉
I absolutely cannot tell. 😳 I've no idea how much foot-zooming is going on and I'm not practised enough to spot distortion or compression right away, yet.
Too bad you didn't have more identical shot took with both focal lenght.
Personally I chose the middle road 27mm (Viltrox f/1.2) but I would go with a 33mm otherwise (I can stich a couple frame in post if I want a wider FoV )

Great video as always. I have both lenses, couldn't choose between them. I have the XE3, but XE2 arriving tomorrow, I sold one a year ago to get the 3, although I love the 3 really miss the 2, will keep both now. Omar what colour setting do you use on your XE2. Thank you.
In my work, I use the 23mm much more, including for video
My 10cents... in a European city, I feel very much at ease with a 35mm. In the americas I find the 23mm to be a more obvious choice. Most of the time. Maybe it has to do with the urban dimensions. For travel I used to take with me two bodies (xt10 and xt20), each with a small prime. Still light but very versatile and ready to shoot. Now xt10 has died on me (rear wheel irresponsive)...
The amount of "foreground stretching" alone is enough for me to guess correctly most of the time - assuming the pic wasn't cropped of course. The second indicator is how magnified the background is.
I can easily tell apart 24, 28, 35, 50 and 85 based on the foreground alone because i learned photography exclusively on prime lenses and I trained myself to use one focal length at a time so I know what the fov looks like. But telling apart the difference between 35 and 40, for example, would be so challenging and i don't get it right every time.
god im a nerd then. i got them all right. was not even a hesitation. i love both these lenses. for me the 23 is more versatile because you can get in closer especially handy with people in there. the 35 is great too, but it really makes more sense when you have the f1.4 version to get the separation.

I took my XT3 and the 35mm f2 to France with me. My first time in Europe. I ended up using my iPhone 13 Pro as a camera the entire time because I felt the 35mm was not wide enough.
I really loved more the 35mm shots.
What I have learned from this is: Having my 27mm as default is probably best :p

Sometimes I couldn't tell but if there is a bit more bokeh, generally it's the 35mm.

I think 23mm is the king when it comes to landscape photography. But it's not flattering for close up portraits.
I already have the 35mm and I love it but I feel the need to get the 23mm 😅
This might sound weird but... I guessed almost all of the 35mm shots correctly... but was kinda 50/50 for the 23mm shots... maybe that just shows that I never used a 35mm full frame equivalent lol
all this comparison reminded me of Sigma art 30mm DN vs Sigma art 19mm f2.8 . 30mm is undoubtably better here.

viltrox 27mm ha ha 40mm LOL now I'm joking aside, but I actually have used the 40 mm and it's perfect. I actually think 50 is too far and I think 35 is not enough and I really like the little 27 mm lens it is a little bit bulky I should say, but image quality on that thing is damn good it's a red badge lens
