  • In this episode I take a first look and give my initial impressions on the just released Fuji XF 16-80mm lens for video applications. I also talk a lot about the 18-55mm but forgot to mention that that lens is NOT weather resistant like the 16-80. Seems to be a great all around lens with a big gotcha!

      @@mribi Dude I am right there myself, although I do have an adapter. My initial plans were to keep my glass and use an adapter and that has worked out well but now plans have changed. After this job I have in about a week I'm going to sell most of my Canon glass and get Fuji glass. Reason being I feel like I'm half assing why I moved to Fuji. Great quality and size. I can't take advantage of the size if I still have all this massive glass. Also 3 of my lenses are weather sealed which is great and all, but most if not all adapters aren't. That's two possibly compromised points to ruin things. The connection point of the lens to the adapter and then the adapter to the body.

    Great video. I just received the XT-5 with the 16-80 and have tried it out and already love the combination. I like the IBIS and the range of this lens. I only do stills. Most videos on the 16-80 highly recommend this lens. I have been a Nikon user for many years and got into the Fuji system because of the weight and compactness at my "tender" age.😀

    Great analysis of the 16-80. Now that it's been over a year since you posted this, do you still prefer the 16-80 for video, or would you rather have the faster 16-55? I'm trying to decide between these two lenses for video.

    • @theC47

      If you have IBIS I would say the 16-55. Still need to use as a variable prime but it’s the better lens, and a stop faster.

    I’m glad I found your channel (and subscribed). I recently got into digital photography (after shooting film for many years), I’m not a pro, I just do it for fun. My first (and only) digital camera is the Fujifilm X-T2, I have the XF-16mm f/2.8 and the XF-35mm f/2 (i’m very happy with both), I have this lens on pre-order (the 16-80) and most RUclips reviewers are not giving it a great score, most are saying that it’s a 7 or 8 out of 10, except for a youtuber that goes by the name “the angry photographer”, he claims that it is a 10 out of 10. I use the camera 100% for stills, I don't have any interest in video, will you be doing anymore testing with it? especially for stills. Thank you.

    Why not buy a speedbooster like the Viltrox and use the 24-105 Canon? It will be a 24-105 f4 with +1 f stop, IS and no exposure shift while zooming. And the best - you already own the lens!

    • @theC47

      Main reasons are overall size of kit and also AF features of native Fujifilm glass. That said it is an option but will make overall set up a lot bigger.

  • @CarsCamerasKavorka

    Since this is a constant f/4, would it work to lock exposure when zooming to prevent the exposure flicker issue? I’ve tried it with the 2.8-4 lens and it prevents that from happening, but of course the image is somewhat under exposed because you’re zooming from 2.8-4. I would think you would be ok doing that with this lens since you stay at f4.

    • @theC47

      Taylor Wilson That Lens was set to an f/4 when zooming and I wouldn’t generally set aperture or ISO to auto to compensate.

    Really detailed review, thanks! Tell me for a start with XT-3 I have two options with a "kit lens". One is of course 18-55mm and second 16-80mm. The price difference is just a 100$. Which is going to perform better in video? (Ordering 23mm f2 too).

    • @theC47
      @theC47  4 года назад +2

      Are you getting the X-T3 or X-T4? The kit lens is a stop faster on the wide end but if you want constant aperture you need to stop down to a 4. The 16-80 give you extra reach and might be better if you are shooting a lot of interviews. The 23 is a rockstar. I also love the 35/2 and 50/2 but use the 35 more than the 50.

    I found this video very useful but have a question: I'm new to Fuji and currently have an X-T4 with the 16-80 on pre-order. However, I'm wondering whether it would be better for me to pay extra to get the 16-55 f2.8 instead. With the bundle, the 16-80 would only come to $500, but I'm wondering if the better image quality and faster aperture would make the 16-55 worth the extra investment. For reference, I'm wanting to use it for both video and stills, particularly portraits and buildings. If you could just get one and did not anticipate being able to afford additional lenses anytime soon, which would you go with? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    • @theC47
      @theC47  4 года назад +1

      Great ?. For architectural stills the 16-80 would be fine. 80mm at f/4 is OK but for portraits at that focal length (or even 50-55), I think you’ll want 2.8 or faster.
      16-55 is a great lens it’s just not as long in short telephoto.

  • @swagonman

    As you zoom, there is an obvious focus issue. As you are zooming, the lens is not mechanically parfocal, but the firmware is automatically adjusting the focus to try and make it stay in focus continuously. So once you stop zooming, it is back in focus, but during zoom, the focus is drifting in and out trying to catch up. It does this even in manual focus. However, per another reviewer, you can improve the focus and exposure performance while zooming. Just put the lens in auto aperture mode and the body in auto ISO mode and try again. It’s much, much better, but not completely fixed. Maybe could be used in video recording depending upon how critical you are and how fast you change the zoom. Try this and let us know if it helps. Maybe make another video showing the improvement.

    • @theC47
      @theC47  4 года назад +1

      Karl Volk Thanks for the comments and feedback Karl. It’s a strange hybrid of a lens. I am not planning to use it any other way than as a variable prime. That’s how I treat the 18-55 as well. I wouldn’t set it to auto aperture as that’s a fixed quantity the way I shoot. I probably wouldn’t also set it to auto ISO for video recording (I do for stills).

    • @swagonman
