  • It's been a while since Fujifilm released a wide to medium range zoom lens, especially with both OIS and WR. Previously, the only general range zoom lens that had both features was the big and bulky XF18-135mm lens. My hope was that Fujifilm would re-make the XF18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS lens to be XF16-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS WR. Instead, Fujifilm decided to keep the original kit lens and create the new XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. Who is this lens for? It really depends. If you own the X-T3 and you really want a mid-range zoom lens with both OIS and WR, this is the only option you have. However, if you own the X-H1, would you be better off with the XF 16-55mm f/2.8 and put up with the size and weight of a professional lens?
    This lens is pre-production and I will be running some very basic tests with it. In this video I go over the features of this new lens, the pros, the cons, and who this lens is for. Look for my shooting impressions video soon. Thanks for watching, don't forget to like, subscribe, and tell your friends. Please help me grow this channel so I can bring you more regular content. 3:55 mark... You can shoot pro with a lot less. Don't fall for marketing tags. The 18 to 55 mm is a great all around lens that still gets a 'Kit' tag. Even Fuji has noted, with WR, OIS, and it's image quality, the 18 to 55 mm f 2.8 - 4, is right up there with some of the best in their lineup. Excellent for both videography and stills.

    So much thought into the minute differences in specs of similar lenses could show that a person's own photography has reached its peak and then hoping that new gear could help.

    There’s a video up that compares this lens to primes and it does very very well. All this “red label = pro” crap is exactly what the camera companies are tricking people with.
    I don’t care about red labels. I care about image quality. As should everyone else.

    I want this lens so badly. I’m a prime lens shooter usually but I want to get a good zoom for situations where I need more versatility. The extra range compared to the 18/16-55 lenses is really nice along with IBIS

    • @bigheadtaco

      A couple of primes and this zoom lens would be a killer combo. For me probs the 35mm f/2, although I do want to see how this lens performs at 23mm and 80mm as well. Hopefully the 9 blade circular aperture ring will help with the bokeh even at f/4

    Very thorough Taki. Good content. I don't shoot much wide. I have the infamous and much hated Fuji 18mm prime. (For me, I think it is excellent) And also the cheapy Fuji XC 16-50mm. Once again, for me, it is more than enough, very good for their cheapest kit lens. I don't think Fuji makes any bad lenses.

      The 18mm is mostly hated by people who have never used it - they just build up on negative reviews. The same as 18-135 (I especially like when people say this zoom does not match primes quality). I try lenses myself.

    • @barrycohen311
      @barrycohen311 5 лет назад +1

      @@boceskia The 18mm did have a constant "focus hunting" issues, and the focus motor is kind of loud. Some people refer to this as "Lens Chatter." But this was cured in a firmware fix, about two years ago. I love the image quality of it, especially for B&W.

    I'm considering it for product videography with the X-T3 because of the improved autofocus. But here's the thing - I just picked up the 80mm macro, and it's essentially a choice between the two. I also have a 50mm F2 and a 16mm 2.8, but I'm considering selling the 16mm 2.8 and getting this instead for the OIS.

    Great preview thanks Take. I got to play with one at a Fujifilm Australia event over the weekend. Surprised at the small size given the focal range. I was expecting a bigger lens. This would be great for travel if zoom is your thing. I hope to get a copy for review soon too. Cheers mate. Greg

    Hey Take, what are your thoughts of the practicality of the lens being used as a West Coast gravel riding lens (generally carried on a sling) on an X-Pro body or a as yet mythical X-E4 WR body? The focus would be secondarily on the landscape, primarily on the riders, especially on-trail portraits. Or if you have thoughts for system alternatives? Budget is a key requirement but not at the expense of usability.

    Other people, e.g. Tony Northrup say that focus breathing is where where the focussing element steals some space from the focal length, meaning that the effective focal length changes based on focus distance. Are you sure it's what you said it is?

    Great technical review so far,there is no perfect lens in the range to cover everything but it all depends what your shooting,i have the 16-55 lens and as long as i shoot with a fast enough shutter speed my images are sharp and crisp colours that pop and with that F2.8 constant aperture low light shooting isnt a problem.there are times i do miss the stabalisation on it and the fuji 16-80 lens i believe is a great lens especially for travel also handy it zooming to 80mm which is a bonus with the image stabalisation,so this new lens is great for outdoors at F4 aperture in decent light but one would struggle a bit shooting indoors with that F4 aperture.

    • @someonereason
      @someonereason 5 лет назад +1

      This lens has 6-stops image stabilization. Why struggle? It's equal to 4-stops in a f/2.0 lens.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  5 лет назад +1

      The difference between f/4 and f/2.8 is only 1 stop, while the lens has 6 stops of stabilization, giving the XF16-80mm lens a 5 stop advantage (of either ISO or shutter speed, take your pic) in the exact same situation. AF in low light is more of an issue with the camera body you’re using, and less about the lens because again of only a 1 stop difference. But you’re right, there’s no perfect lens. However for me, a XF14-35mm f/2.8 R OIS WR in the size of the XF16-80mm f/4 would be as close to perfect for my needs..... thanks for your comment and thoughts!

  • @philipsutton2316

    Hey Taki - great movie but you missed out on one important thing! I'm hoping this lens can replace not one, but two lenses. At the moment I have two X-H1's and one has the 16-55 glued on and the other the 90mm. This gives me the perfect spread of focal ranges that I use for all my street/travel/documentary photography. I sold the XF 55-200, because it could not give me the subject isolation and smooth background that I was after (coming from full frame). At the 90mm length the 55-200 was around 5.6 - which was useless for isolating the subject. However, that is where the 90mm comes in. I can get the most smooth, beautiful backgrounds blurred out and the subject stands out wonderfully. Furthermore - now that I sold my T2's and got the two H1's, all of my lenses are now stabilised. it almost sounds perfect - except it is a big kit to lug around. I am hoping that the new 16-80 could somehow replace my two current lenses (of course will not be as good as the two separate lenses but may be an OK compromise), and I could have one H1 with the 16-80, and as you say the other body with a nice little Fuji 'Cron'! I can't wait for your tests - especially to see how the new lens isolates subject from background at 80mm and wide open. Philip

    Hi Take, great review. I currently have the X-T2 and 16-55 as my all weather beater camera which also serves as back up to my GFX 50S system for landscape trips. I have the 16-80 on pre-order with my local camera shop but they know I might not take it over the 16-55 it all depends on how it feels in hand and to a degree the performance which I hope your next video will help with. I am really only interested in 3 things, the OIS, extra reach and the fact that I can use the Lee Seven5 filter system when I just take the X-T2 out so I await with bated breath your next video. Thanks for this one.

      Topsyrm have you received it? I’m currently waiting for the 16-80 to ship, but I might cancel if the image quality isn’t worth the price. The 16-55 sounds like a fantastic lens.

    • @Topsyrm
      @Topsyrm 4 года назад +1

      @@pherylihy58 Hi Patrick, the lens came in and I went in to try it out but passed, the benefits I was looking for (IS, smaller filter ring and extra reach) weren't worth (for me) the extra money I would have needed to put to it. The lens handled well AF is good and it is lighter but overall I decided to stick with my 16-55, IQ is better with the 16-55 and it being Red Badge feels more sturdy.

    • @pherylihy58
      @pherylihy58 4 года назад

      @@Topsyrm Thank you for letting me know. I'm hearing that the IQ lines this lens up in between the 18-55 and the 16-55. Would you agree with that? I'm thinking I might buy the 16-55 instead.

    • @Topsyrm
      @Topsyrm 4 года назад +1

      @@pherylihy58 I'm not qualified to advise on this Patrick, I already had the 16-55 and was looking to get some convenience advantages for the trade up but ultimately I decided against trading. That's not to say the 16-80 is not a good lens it just wasn't the right trade option for me. I'm happy with my 16-55 but there's a compromise to make which is ISO against shutter speed I am content with my compromise. If you get chance to try the 16-80 you can make your own comparison but for me the IQ is not as good. Hope this helps.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 года назад +2

      for me the IQ is good for the price you're paying, but you're not paying for just IQ. You're paying for the combination of features: IQ, wide range focal length, fast and quiet AF, constant aperture, WR, 6 stops of OIS, reasonable price. The XF 16-55mm f/2.8 IQ is great, but for myself, I'm unwilling to lug that beast around as my EDC lens. For me that lens is a very specific use lens for professional or high end IQ work.
