Fujinon 16-80mm f4 R OIS WR Full Review, Part 2: Portraits (English)

  • This is Part 2 of my full review of Fujinons latest zoom-lens, the 16-80mm f4 R OIS WR.
    And this time I tested it regarding portraits.
    I made a promise to try the 16-80 on my next shootings.
    Well, I did it with these two wonderful models:
    Henny: / henny_steen
    Fabia: / fabi_van_t
    Spoiler: I was surprised by the great out-of camera-results with the film simulations . I did not expect the lens to perform that good. There are some examples in the video.
    So what is this video all about?
    Of course a zoom lens like the 16-80mm f4 will not be the first choice for portrait photographers - also not mine by the way. But with the full format equivalent focal length of 120mm, the lens is still interesting for it.
    But what about the maximum aperture of f4? Because of the really shallow depth of field of my beloved 56mm f1.2 I sometimes already take portraits with lower apertures like f4 or f5.6. So the f4 of the 16-80 can be "enough" for a specific style of portrait-photography.
    With the longer focal length of the 80 Mill it can create a very nice bokeh, achieved by the 9 blades aperture. And all focal lengths relevant for my portrait photography (23, 35, 56) are of course "included" with the 16-80 Mill. So you can easily change from close up to a medium shot or a more wide angle view.
    But of course there are some disadvantage with the 16-80mm: Doing available light portraits in low light situations is not a good thing. But in daylight I can definitely recommend the lens for portraits. Of course, it becomes more difficult with shorter focal lengths and smaller apertures. The image quality is really excellent, but can not keep up with the prime lenses of course.
    It can be very good for business portraits, spontaneous street portraits or portraits of your children. It even might be a great option for wedding photographers when shooting outdoors in enough daylight. Additionally, due to the weather sealing, it is an option for portraits in the rain.
    If you are looking for a universal lens for travel and maybe want to get started with portrait photography, go and buy it!

    Hi Jay,
    thank you so much for these down-to-earth reviews. I own this lens for 10 months now and - given all the complaints about softness - I was really pushing hard to find some weak spots. However, I couldn't find any. Even compared to my beloved line-up of 1.2/1.4 Fujinons I'm often having a hard time in telling the difference. My guess is that some people just don't have realistic expectations on a 5x zoom lens or are just parroting other people's experiences and conclusions.
    At the end of the day, this lens will not replace any of my primes because nothing will ever replace a fast lens. But it will be glued on my camera for hiking, climbing, traveling or just casual shooting, especially in inclement weather, when switching lenses is always a pain.
    Keep on your great channel and stay safe!
    Bernhard

    Great presentational style and some beautiful portrait shots here👏👏👏
    I shoot mainly street and like you with the fast primes but would like to add a weather resistant zoom. I think your portrait shots have convinced me to go the 16-80 rather than 16-55 route.
    Many thanks

    Great video thank you. I would love to know your opinion on the 56 mm 1.2 APD version

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  4 года назад +3

      Thanks a lot!
      I did not test the APD version myself, but read many reviews about it and talked to the experts at my local store: For me as an amateur, APD is not an advantage that justifies the price difference. It's about using a built-in filter to achieve more softness between the sharp part and the background. In short: even softer bokeh while losing effective aperture, because the 1.2 will work like a 1.7. So I finally decided against APD because of this and the price difference (in Germany it is currently €350). If I were a professional photographer, I might have made a different decision. But even without APD, I was completely enthusiastic about the lens and did not regret buying it. I hope this is helpful.

    Danke Jochen für diesen sehr kompetenten Erfahrungsbericht! Ich hätte nie gedacht dass man mit einem kleineren Sensorformat solche wundervollen Porträts "out of the camera" bekommen kann!
    Bei mir lautet die Frage erst mal: Soll ich mich von meinem Nikon Z- Vollformatsystem verabschieden und zu Fuji X wechseln? Werde ich mit der Bildqualität zufrieden sein?? Vollformat ist diesbezüglich toll, aber die meisten Objektive dazu sind schwer, gross, sperrig und teuer, wenn man das Bessere und Beste will. Mühsam auf Bergtouren und Reisen, aber auch zu auffällig für die diskrete Street- und Reportagefotografie.
    Ein Universalzoom wie dieses 16-80er (entspricht meinem Nikkor 12-120 F4) würde zu meinem Allrounder werden, und dein Bericht gibt mir so viel Vertrauen dass ich den Schritt wohl machen werde. Gerade im Telebereich, aber nicht nur dort, erhoffe ich mir von einem Wechsel zu APS-C eine markante Einsparung von Gewicht und Volumen, bei immer noch akzeptabler bis sehr guter Bildqualität. Mein Schwerpunkt ist die Natur- und Landschaftsfotografie, aber ich mache auch Reportagen aller Art, Streetfotografie und Porträts.
    Wahrscheinlich werde ich mir nächsten eine T-4 oder X-H2 mit dem 16-80er ausleihen, dann sehe ich schon ob das passt. Und vielleicht kannst du mir auch noch ein paar ermutigende Argumente liefern für dieses System. Die X-H2 käme z.B. in Frage, doch hier befürchte ich bei hohen ISO-Werten zu viel Rauschen das wieder auf Kosten der Feinauflösung geht. Aber ich hoffe ich täusche mich diesbezüglich.
    Viele Grüsse aus dem Land der Helvetier.

    Hello Jochen (or Jay), great video as always. I have other zooms and primes, but since getting the 16-80 it’s glued to my camera. I did notice that it is a little too sharp for my taste, I was taking a portraiture of my mother in law and it really brings out the wrinkles on her face, she looks like a prune with eyes, this lens is too good. LOL. keep making videos in English (or Spanish).

    Wonderful video. And I totally agree.
    I have this lens and I did my first professional photo shoot with it this past week. My model was a two year old boy. He was a moving blur of hyperactivity. I never pulled out my 50mm Prime Portrait lens. It was zoom (at 1/350 or faster) or bust in this situation. The Prime and my manual Lensbaby Velvet 56 (my two favorite portrait lens) would have been totally impractical .
    I was actually blown away with how great the shoot went. Great detail, color and bokeh.
    Limitations, yes. But a really wonderful lens just the same.

      Would you say this lens would be good for toy/product photography (for the bokeh) and casual bird photography?

    • @marketguy2
      @marketguy2 2 года назад +1

      @@Xeallous It's an extremely versatile lens. But, it only zooms to 80mm. So casual bird photography if the birds are close enough should be fine. I've had some really good success with both flying and stationary birds that were close enough to get the detail that I wanted.
      I'm not great at product photography, but the little that I have done works well with this lens.

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  2 года назад +1

      As the 80mm is 120mm in Full Frame, it’s okay for that. But of course it’s not a wildlife lens as others. Product Photography is great with it, bokeh depending on the possible focal length. It really has a very nice bokeh at 80mm…

      Hey Sepp. Danke! Bei Kindern würde ich ja immer als erstes vermuten, dass die Verschlusszeiten zu lang sind, wenn die Bilder unscharf sind. OIS ist dann natürlich hilfreich. Grundsätzlich ist mein Eindruck aber tatsächlich, dass der AF vom 16-80 etwas flotter ist, als der des 56mm. Wenn das Bokeh nicht ganz so wichtig ist: Probier es doch mal aus... Grüße zurück!

    a good quality 24-120 (in 35mm) constant aperture zoom will ALWAYS be a versatile lens for portraiture, and i'm glad you pointed out why. of course it will never be accepted by the prime only shooters :-)
    why you restrict your creative ability for portraiture by only shooting in available light is a mystery to me, and you just stated a good example of why.....but that's another subject that could and will be debated forever :-)
    nice video review !

      Thank you for your opinion. About the „available light“ theme: it's about focusing on the people, I want to create a portrait of. I don't like to take care of more equipment like light or flash. It just doesn't fit my way of working, it is not a rule set that I gave myself as a creative limitation. Thanks again for your comment, I appreciate it.

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  4 года назад +2

      John Smith I used to own it, but sold it for the 56mm 1.2. I think it’s a great little lens, also for portraits. I love all the lenses of the f2 series for the better AF, smaller size, WR and their price. But the bokeh of the 56 is unbeatable. Regarding motion blur: I always use the standard rule 1/focal length = shutter speed, but I always use the FF equivalent to calculate it. So with the 50mm a shutter speed 1/75s should be fine, so I go with 1/125s. I can’t remember to have different values with this lens. Hope this helps. Thx for watching!

    Hallo Jochen,
    ich überlege stark, mir das 16-80 zu kaufen.
    In den Foren wird häufig erwähnt, dass man besser eines mit einer hohen Seriennummer, also ein kürzlich produziertes, nehmen soll, weil Fuji da bereits einige Kinderkrankheiten ausgemerzt haben soll....
    Nun meine Frage, wie „lese“ ich bei Fuji die Seriennummern? Also woran erkenne ich, ob das Objektiv „alt oder neu“ auf dem Markt ist??
    Dank Dir!
    Schönes Wochenende!!

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  4 года назад +1

      Hey Seb. Davon habe ich persönlich noch überhaupt nix gehört. Ich habe das Objektiv relativ früh gekauft und einige Kinderkrankheiten wurden seitdem per Firmware ausgemerzt und die neuen Versionen haben diese natürlich schon aufgespielt. Ansonsten kann ich nichts, aber auch gar nichts negatives über meine frühe Version berichten. Angeblich kann man das Jahr auf einem Barcode-Sticker auf der Box ablesen. Auf meinem 16mm 2.8 beginnt die Zahl unter dem Barcode mit einer "9" was angeblich bedeutet, dass es 2019 gebaut wurde. Ich kann das aber nicht verifizieren. Viel Erfolg!

    For me, this lens is a disappointment, maybe I had too high expectations, For portraits and handheld it gives me blurry images. For video its ok but by 30 fps 60 shutter it gives ghosting when the subject moves his head a bit faster, so unexpectable for shooting video clips.
