Fuji 16-80 F4 R OIS WR: Reasons for buying (vs.18-55) and first impression after two weeks (English)

  • I discuss the features of Fujis new zoom lens "Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR".
    - Why did I buy the Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4?
    - Why should it replace my Fujinon18-55mm F2.8-4?
    - Why is it (hopefully) a good choice for city, travel and maybe even street photography?
    The good old kit lens (Fujinon 18-55mm F2.8-4) is really a great lens. But a few things always annoyed me: The continuous aperture ring, the switch for the aperture automatic, the other switch for the OIS, the missing weather sealing "WR" and - last but not least - the limited focal length range. Therefore, I was very excited about the announcement of the new Fujinon XF 16-80mm in July. Even if a maximum aperture of F4 cannot compete with prime lenses, I mostly use an aperture from 5.6 / 8 at least in the city and street photography. This is why the f4 is completely sufficient for me. This and more information you will find in this video.
    At the end of the video I show some pictures of my first two weeks with the new Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR and my Fuji X-T3.
    A detailed review will follow.
    If you have questions about the lens or my channel, feel free to write me in the comments.

    Hello from New Hampshire USA! Great review and humor. I appreciate you taking the time to re-produce it in English. Excellent review! (Former Dusseldorf Einwohner, Charlotte, NC now). I will consider getting the 16-80 lens now, actually i own two fuji bodies X t1 and X h1. The pictures you showed are very nice despite the fact that the zoom is "not considered a street photo lens", actually i make use of what i have attached to my camera at the given time. I use to live in Dusseldorf for 12 years on Talstrasse. so Konigsallee was just minutes walk for me, i still miss it!

    One thing that would've been nice is if there was a side by side of the same scene shot with the different lenses. Then this would be the most comprehensive comparison guide.

    In 99% of shots - if you are doing any 'serious' video (movie making narrative or documentary) you will not be using zoom in shot, 'that strange way' as you so rightly put it. So the focus wobble thing is a meaningless 'problem'. Auto follow focus is generally good (for video it's either good - working as it should, or bad - you screw up the shot). Best practice is to pre set some zone focusing - not the same as what the camera auto focus calls 'zone') and then control the action within that zone. Wish this lens was one stop faster - it would be ideal but the iOS makes up for this to quite a degree. Not so much in low light with 1/48th shutter for 24 frames video though - the camera will need higher iso with inherent issues. It is one of the best options (on the budget end and beyond) for the majority of lighting states and will handle dark interiors if you are smart with supplementary lighting.

    The weight difference is an issue for me. The 18 to 55 weight is just right if you carry it around all day on an X T3 for example. The 16 to 80 is relatively heavy by comparison.

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  4 года назад +1

      But it also offers 16 instead of 18 (I changed my mind, it's great!) and 80mm (aka 120) instead of 55mm (aka 83). And for that the size and weight is relatively close. Thx for watching.

    The argument that constant f4 on the 16-80mm is an advantage over variable aperture f2.8-4 on 18-55 is totally bogus… you can set the 18-55 to f4 and it becomes constant f4 aperture as well plus as a bonus you are getting an extra stop of light at the wide angle… you were not the only one who has made the argument

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  Год назад

      I stay with it: It can be an advantage. The aperture ring is "infinite" with the 18-55 because of the inconstant maximum aperture. You have to look at your screen, wich aperture is set up. Only if you don't care about that, the additional stop is an advantage.

    What i think is great is that it is a lens that is way better (than the 18-55) filling the gaps of the prime lenses, let me explain:
    Apart from the upgraded range, what i appreciate is the way it “fights” in low light. You have two options: wider aperture or slower shutter speed (which in involves stabilization). As prime lenses go for the wider aperture and no stabilization, having the oposite is nice for the cases you dont want anything out of focus. So as the new lens has better stabilization and less aperture it is better in that way.

    Thank you for the English video. Although I speak and understand some German, I can much better absorb the full content in English. BTW, your use of our language is impeccable. Although I have some interest in the 16-80mm lens, I fear that it might not balance properly on my X-E3. My 18-55 is already larger than desirable for an ultra compact body. On the other hand, I would like to obtain a bit more sharpness and detail than the 18-55 in some situations. So how would you rate the sharpness and micro contrast of one lens versus the other? Thank you. /Warren

    Thanks for the review, Jay. Speaking of street photography and auto focus speed, and being a user of the 18-55mm, did you find the 16-80mm noticeably faster than the 18-55mm?
    I own the 18-55mm and it often finds hard time focusing quickly on the subject. That's why I am considering the 16-80mm if the auto focus is faster.
    Thanks

      I did not compare the two lenses directly regarding AF, but I don’t feel much of a difference here. I never had problems with the AF of the 18-55, except maybe in low light situations. But don’t get me wrong: The AF of the 16-80 is in my opinion fast and precise. Maybe you should go and test it on your camera body before buying it.

    People, play the video at 1.25 speed and its perfect! Johann, your English is very good, just a bit slow :) But the most important thing - your video is useful, well done and your logic is solid, I believe. As a sidenote, make comparison with the 18-135. If majority of your shooting is at 5.6, you can use the 18-135 as a constant 5.6 lens and get to 200mm equivalent. My personal favorite :)

    Hey Jay! Some good point. I struggle to choose a telephoto as well. Have you tought about 18-135 which is very similar with variable apature? I wonder what you think about this lens and also 55-200. I am not sure what to buy myself and I also like street and traveling and videos to learn hmmm

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  4 года назад +1

      GregoryD Hey. Thanks for watching and your comment. I must confess, I do not know both lenses from my own experience. I thought about the 18-135, but it is an older lens (2014) and according to reviews you have to accept disadvantages in the image quality as with all super zooms. And it still costs nearly 800€ in Germany. o_O
      With the "55-200" I simply miss the wide angle range, because I do not want to change lenses. Hope this is helpful. ;)

      @@Jayshooter_photo Thanks for replay. Hm yeah new one here in scotland in 650 for 18-135£ used for 500 but 16-80 is even more expensive new 770. Hmm I like primes 16mm 1.4, 35 & 50 F2 for street and portraits so thats why i thought maybe 55-200 would be good with those. I want to buy XH-1 camera and kinda bothers me that stabilizations together with 16-80 dont work well or better in pair and its not good for videos with wobbles etc so maybe better if I wait until they fix it. Hard to choose lenses haha

    Just a suggestion, I think you have an external screen attached on the top of your camera, so you kept looking above the lens, that made me felt you ain't talking to me, which is your audience. Try to look right at the lens instead will make a better connection to your viewers.

    Hey Jochen, 16-55 oder 16-80? Habe bisher nur die 18-55, vermisse manchmal ein paar mm mehr Brennweite, sehne mich aber sehr nach mehr Bokeh.. Oder die 18-55 behalten und eine Prime dazukaufen? Bin Hobbyist, schiesse ein bisschen von allem, am meisten macht mir aber Produktfotografie Spass (Autos/Motorraeder). Laut "Exposure Plot" app benutze ich am meisten ~30mm(33%), ~50mm(23%), und ~20mm(17%), die restl. 27% meiner Fotos sind gleichmaessig auf den uebrigen Brennweitenbereich verteilt.. Danke vielmals im Voraus!

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  4 года назад

      Dennis Bautembach Moin Dennis. Das 16-55 ist mit den durchgehenden f2.8 natürlich auch eine sehr gute Alternative, wenn Du durchgehend etwas mehr Bokeh und bei einem Zoom bleiben möchtest. Das 16-80 hat eben „nur“ F4. Dafür ist das Bokeh zwar sehr schön, wie ich finde, kommt aber natürlich hauptsächlich im Tele zum Tragen. Ich persönlich würde Dir für Deine Fotografie tatsächlich empfehlen, ein Prime zum 18-55 dazu zu kaufen und dann mehr Deine Füße zu benutzen, was bei Autos und Motorrädern ja meist gehen sollte. Ich kann die WR f2 Primes sehr empfehlen und denke da in Deinem Fall vor allem an das 35mm f2. Das ist eine supergeile Linse für relativ kleines Geld. Vom alten 35mm f1.4 würde ich eher abraten weil langsam und teurer. Es kommen bald auch noch drei Viltrox Linsen für Fuji raus (23,33 und 56), das 85mm gibt es schon und es ist in Tests super weggekommen. Wenn manuelle Linsen infrage kommen, schau mal bei Samyang. Aber der heiße Tipp bleibt das 35mm. Danke fürs Zusehen!

      @@Jayshooter_photo You said the aperture ring spins continuously. That's how they make lenses with variable aperture. It's weird that it wouldn't have a normal aperture ring like other constant aperture lenses.

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  4 года назад +1

      Okay, now I have it. It is clear that with variable aperture the ring has to be like it is on the 18-55. I just said that I do not like that and so I'm glad it's different on the 16-80. :)
