Fuji X-T1 Street Photography POV with Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 OIS WR Zoom Lens Review

  • The Fujifilm X-T1 is an excellent street photography camera, but what lens to use in an urban environment? There are several options, including both zooms and primes. If you want something versatile, but sharp, you can go with the Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR Zoom. Most street shots are at higher apertures than the minimum f/4 (throughout) for this lens, and the ability to use it as a wide 16mm to cover architecture and street scenes, as well as the ability to zoom into that same architecture, while also shooting a little more discreetly and stealthy.
    In this video, I use the Fujinon XF 16-80mm F4 R OIS WR Zoom (listed in Amazon links below) for a walk around downtown Indianapolis. I use several different techniques to test the lens and camera, including asking people if I can take their portraits, zoomed action shots, and high-contrast black and white utilizing the excellent sun I had on this particular evening.
    I'd love to hear your thoughts on the camera, the lens,and the video presentation itself. I will in the future use the gopro on the vest, so you can see the Fuji X-T1 in action.

      I think it's an awesome little camera. If it was my one and only I would be very happy with it. The only problem is I have the other cameras and don't get to use this one as much as I'd like, but I promise there will be more videos coming soon using the X-T1 in some different situations. Thanks so much for commenting! Helps me decide what I should focus on, etc with the channel.

    Good job getting your subjects to agree to be photographed. Of course, you may have edited out your NOs.
    I like you move your subjects into the light. Suggestion. When you have people with baseball hats either have them tilt the cap up or move their heads up. The brim throws too much shadow on their faces. Of course fill flash would work too. I forget to do this all the time and my subject’s face is chronically underexposed.
    I am a Fuji shooter. I just purchased a GRIII after watching your street videos using the GR III. Having problems with the camera. Don’t like the 28mm focal length. Too wide for my taste. I need to get too close to my subject for my comfort. I set the video button to digitally zoom to 35mm with 19mp. Much more comfortable for me. Thinking about the X. I already have 35mm and 28mm works when I go to protests or parades. Trying to work without an EVF. It is handy on 😎 sunny days or better frame my images. Also miss having a tilty screen. Love the snap focus. The jury is out as to whether I’ll keep the GR III.
    One thing I notice Indy has that Seattle has also. A dearth of subjects on the street. Even NYC is thin because of the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic Seattle didn’t have the street density that NYC has. I like does concentrations of people to work with. Gives me more variety to work with and select from.
    Bravo for you using film in a previous video. Gave that up a while ago. I like to take a lot of photos. When I shoot with a 2-5% rate of acceptable images I either need to take a lot of images or be more deliberate. Every time I press the shutter with a film camera it costs in excess of a dollar. That is whether I’m satisfied with the image or not. I can see why Gary Winnogrand and Vivian Maier didn’t develop or print all their images before they died.

      Hey thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts Marty! I don't get too many no's, and usually don't put them in, since they said no, although they can't really do anything about it. But if I feel it can be 'instructive,' I'll include a 'no' in the video.
      Sounds like the new GR IIIx would be better, but if you already have the focal length covered maybe not. I just like the feel of the Ricoh, small but still solid and sturdy, can't say that about most compacts. I'm also not sure people know it's even a camera half the time, but I have the GA-1 on mine, and hold it differently, again, which is why I like it.
      Indy is hit and miss regarding people. I can go out on a Monday evening and see it packed, but the next week it's a ghost-town. So depends on if there are gatherings downtown, events, etc. But I would like to visit some other cities, just not too comfortable as of yet.
      I like shooting film because of the 'every shot is important' approach. Helps me slow down with my digital shooting as well, but I'm not shy about shooting 350 shots on the Ricoh in a single outing, so to me each piece of equipment lends itself to different styles of photography, which helps me grow and keeps me entertained!

      @@DozierGraphic Thanks 🙏 for responding. I have two film cameras that get no use. I don’t like that every time I press the shutter the cha ching of the ca$h register rings, even if I don’t like the image. I do not develop or print my own film. That would drive down the co$t a bit.
      Here is a digital alternative. Buy a small memory card. One, two or four gigabytes. That will limit your ability to take a large amount of images without having to exercise self discipline. One of the major benefits of mirrorless digital cameras is the wysiwyg on the LCD screen.
      I have the same issue with critical mass in downtown Seattle. Many of the stores are closed. At times the streets look like they belong to a ghost town. That makes street photography difficult.
      Really liked the high contrast portraits you created where the faces are highlighted and the background goes to black. Very dramatic.

    I'm so glad you made this review. I bought an X-T1 to use as a 2nd body with my X-T3. I was thinking about getting the 16 to 80mm for the X-T1 because I always have the 70-300mm on the X-T3. I do kayak photography and need the weather sealing and the ability to switch cameras and not have to change lenses. I bought the 16-80mm after seeing your review and could not be happier with it.

      I didn't use specific settings in the one Ton, so it would have taken hours to go through and list all the settings for all 60 photos in the vid, but I'm like you, I usually like to see the settings as well. I'm sure on my next outing, i'll have more 'standard' settings throughout the video that I can share. Meaning, I'll pick a shutter speed and aperture, and put it on autoiso like I do with the Ricoh. But in this one it was mostly aperture priority, and I was just getting familiar with the camera. Thanks my friend!

      The 16-80 is a VERY good lens. Very solid, and well constructed. If it's your only lens, and you're upgrading, then I see no problem at all. No reason to upgrade the X-T1 unless you're getting into extreme pro work, need duel card slots, etc but that X-t1 is a beast!

      It's manual focus. I say in the video that I set it to infinity and just use zone focusing, so some of the shots are going to be out of focus, but I try to show the good with the bad in my videos so people don't think I get perfect shots every time. Have to go through a lot of 'almost' shots to get the fewer good/great shots. And thanks, I enjoy black and white as well!

      Hi Duane! Not sure I understand what you mean by 'preview'? I used the Continuous High for this and shot about 550 images lol WAY too many, had to dump a majority of them as duplicates. But have to admit, it did help getting better image on second or third shot of the burst.

      Meaning are you checking your shots on the LCD monitor when you're on the streets or when you get back to your computer.

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  3 года назад

      Ah I see. Yes, I always check images for exposure, to see if I have a banger, lol, etc. But I never try to 'conserve' battery, etc when shooting street. I'll use every advantage at my disposal, including Preview, as I want to make sure I have a shot that was set up, check my lighting, etc. ESPECIALLY in this video, as the camera was completely foreign to me. It took me several minutes to finally get the lens off Auto Aperture (thought I was adjusting it with the backwheel, wasn't lol) I'm surprised ANY of these shots came out on this outing at all, so while shooting I was definitely checking. I'm also going back to wearing the gopro on the vest to make sure the cameras are in view as well. Thanks Duane!

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  3 года назад +1

      I'm actually planning a quick video to explain the differences between the two cameras, and the benefits/disadvantages of each. Hopefully in the next week or so. But in a nutshell, I believe the Ricoh is 'smarter' and more intuitive, whereas the Fuji is slightly better photo quality, but that's completely subjective, and not scientific by any means. I plan to sit down and write up the pros and cons between the two. They are both great for street photography, the Ricoh gets the edge for it's versatility and stealthiness, but if you also need only one all-around camera, the Fuji wins that. The rest I'll save for the video lol thanks for bringing up the question Sky! And I hope you'll continue to watch!

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  3 года назад

      To add to my previous response that, yes, there will definitely be more Ricoh GR III videos, please understand I gave LONG consideration on how to incorporate these other cameras into this channel without upsetting the 'core audience' that has been there for me from the beginning! In NO WAY am I abandoning that segment of my subscriber base, without you I wouldn't still be putting out videos.
      But I feel as photographers, we all need to stay up on other creative opportunities, because as creative people, things can get stale. I know some folks are tiring of seeing the same streets in my videos, but the violence, pandemic, etc make visiting other towns not as easy as before so I'm trying to keep things fresh by adding some other options. But by no means will these other options replace the Ricoh - it will always be a staple on this channel! Hope that helps a little my friend! Thanks so much for the continued support!
