    An update video where I replace my Camera Source harness with one from RED WOLF. You can then pair this harness with any backup camera that uses an RCA video cable. This is less expensive than a full camera kit and gives you a lot more options. You'll want to stick with a 1" camera if you want to mount it close to the middle like I have my Parkvision one, otherwise you'll have to mount the camera off-centered like I did when I originally installed the larger Camera Source one.
    Here is some additional info about the various tC year differences:
    • 2011 tCs: The factory headunit doesn't appear to support a backup camera.
    • 2012 tCs: Despite not being listed, I got confirmation from a 2012 owner that said you can use the 2013 harness. See the 2013 tC note about the reverse trigger wire.
    • 2013 tCs: These tCs require extra work. You will need to wire in the reverse trigger wire from the 28 pin power harness to the reverse taillight harness. You can find more info at www.autoharnesshouse.com/1986.... Below are pictures provided by the afore mentioned 2012 owner.

    🖼 Behind Lower Dash: photos.app.goo.gl/mi69AEq69mZ...
    🖼 Pink Wire is Reverse Lights: photos.app.goo.gl/eLCVs5b3axX...
    • 2014+ tCs: These are just plug and play as they have the reverse wire connected from factory.
    You can use any backup camera that uses an RCA video cable. If you want to check out the one I wasn't able to install because it wouldn't fit my current location, you can get it from amzn.to/3CkFkug.

    Hi, great video. If I have a 2016 scion tc radio (PT546-00160) and want to install an aftermarket camera that is 12v. Will I need a voltage converter, or is it just plug and play with the RedWolf adapter? I read in a forum that I would need a 6v camera and if I got a 12v I would need a converter. Thank you 😊

    • @VampyreX13
      @VampyreX13  Год назад +1

      Cars are 12v systems, so you want to use a 12v camera without a converter. You just need the harness.

    Twisting wires together does not make a good connection. Either solder them (using a good temperature controlled iron like a TS100 or a Hakko or clone iron - the kind that takes T15 style tip/heater cartridges are best; and “no clean” electronics flux & solder - NEVER use plumbing solder/flux as it’s corrosive and will eat your wires) or use crimp connectors and a proper ratcheting crimping tool made for the style of crimp connectors you are using.
    Electrical tape degrades over time and falls off, especially in hot environments; leaving a sticky mess. It’s best saved for quick temporary insulation jobs where you know that you are about to take it off again and put a proper covering on the joint. Oh, and it works great for keeping trash bags closed if you don’t have the kind with the drawstrings.
    Instead of tape, get some heat-shrink tubing; and if you don’t have one already get an electric heat gun as well. A hair-dryer won’t really get hot enough, and a flame (like from a lighter or butane/propane torch) will burn the tubing unless it’s at the exact right distance - and the first indication that you’re too close is the tubing scorching and catching fire (a great way to take all the fun out of your day!). The electric heat gun won’t do that. Don’t forget to slide the heat-shrink onto the wires before connecting them! The heat-shrink tubing comes in a wide variety of sizes, and colors, and there’s also some that has hot-melt glue inside for making waterproof connections. I keep several assortments around the house; as I find that I’m always using it on something.
    Also, while you’re at it, if you don’t already have a good set of wire strippers (with nice sharp blades and slots for all the various wire sizes you’ll be using) grab a set of them as well. Few things are as frustrating as poor quality strippers. 😉
    All the tools and materials for this can be had online from the usual sources (Amazon, eBay, Banggood, etc) quite inexpensively.

    • @VampyreX13
      @VampyreX13  2 года назад +1

      Very good info. I usually solder mine as well (I have an old Weller), but I only had 1mm and 5mm+ heatshrink tubing at the time, so I just had to rely on using a western splice. I'll have to redo them now that I have more heat shrink tubing on hand when the weather stays warm. The only time I usually don't solder is when tapping into a factory wiring harness, in which case I use the military splice to secure the wire. Since I end up having to use electrical tape for that, I always run a zip tie around it afterwards to keep it from coming undone. If I have a wire outside the car, I always solder it and I'll opt for the heatshrink tubing with the glue inside if it's anywhere exposed to water. As for wire strippers, I actually have an auto wire stripper that I got from Harbor Freight over 18 years ago that I love. Not only does it strip the ends of the wire with ease, I can use it in the middle of a wire to pull back enough of the insulation to do a military splice.
