🎥 Wiper Cowl Removal Guide: • How To: Remove and Rei...
After weighing my options, I've decided a 1" drop max will be best for my daily routes so lowering springs made the most sense. I show you how to remove your old springs and struts / shocks and install new ones. For a mild 1" drop, KYB Excel-G's will work great.

As a former 15 WRX owner I can tell you that the TC2 does have better handling. Not by much but once you install the TRD lowering springs it undoubtedly has much better handling. WRXs awd pulls you out of corners much faster but feels more at home in loose terrain. For paved roads FWD or RWD are better options. Awd is simply added weight that doesn't help much unless you have a high hp application.
If I install TRD struts/shocks on my Scion XD do I have to install lowering performance springs or can I still use the normal springs. I just don't want to feel like I'm riding an 18 wheeler over asphalt if that's what lowering springs feels like.
Dang! That is how it's done my friend. Great video with great narration and no cheesy music in the background. A blueprint for all to follow.
Very very detailed , the best youtuber on here when it comes to DIY projects for you car 💯💯 "proud tc owner"
Thank you!

literally doing my spring today along with new back shocks. This video makes TIS' instructions easier to digest. Thanks
Thanks for the video and the work you put in to produce it.
I planned to put TRD lowering springs on, a guy on the forum trashed them so bad. He said the ride is rock hard. Until I saw your video, I was going to go with Tein coilovers. Thanks to you, I will be buying the TRDs. I'm not a racer and I won't be tracking my tc. I think the TRD lowering springs will add just the right amount of handling and looks I want for my car. Thanks.
I don't know what that person is talking about. Maybe they had worn out shocks. If the ride was harsh like that, my girlfriend wouldn't like riding in the car at all. I think you'll be happy with them.
You sure made it look so easy. I can never do this myself. Thanks for sharing.
It's not too hard, but I've also been doing my own work on my cars for 20 years so I have a pretty good feel for things.
Another great video 👍 I don’t have a tc but I still manage to learn from your vids so thank you for this!
That's awesome to hear! Glad I can reach other car enthusiasts.
Thank you for all the detail in this vid!
I remember when I put in my TRD springs :) had tons of fun doing it
I grew up in New Freedom. :)
We've vended at the outdoor Steampunk Flea market by the fire house a few times.
I got those rims Konig Tandem Anthracite Gray.
I really like mine. I've always had good experience with Konig.
The color is actually called dark gloss graphite.
Sickass install planing on coilovers for my 08 xb
Just a heads up, My TRD springs sticker was on the wrong side, if you either don’t have the sticker or if it’s on the reverse side just out the smaller diameter spring up. (Double checked this with the install instructions from Toyota.)
Very well done.
nice you car will handle like me, I think it makes the most difference .
Do you have all the braces and sway bars installed as well?
@@VampyreX13 only the front and rear bar .
@@edgars4532 You should get the mid-chassis brace.
@@VampyreX13 hey I see that the rear shocks had a little bit of rubbing on them like my car too. The KYB look thinner may be better.
Nice job!
I have the springs I've been waiting to install them I was going to do that here right before fall I was waiting for you to do a video on them actually so I appreciate it you did a very thorough job
It definitely makes it easier to tackle when you know what to expect.
How do you like this setup? How's the street ride quality? Not too rough?
I love my setup. It's perfect for a daily driver. Not too rough on city streets unless you hit a bad pothole.
@@VampyreX13 what happens when you run over bad potholes? does it sag?
@@automachinehead no. It acts just like any other spring over potholes, but it may feel a little more harsh.
@@VampyreX13 oh that's nice to know. do you still have this setup now?
awesome video Derrick! super comprehensive and thorough, i've been watching your vids over the years and they've been a super helpful guide for working on my 2015 tC. one quick question, what mileage was your tC at when you installed these? i installed my TRD springs on OEM struts at around 35,000 miles, and would consider the KYB ones later down the line or if there were problems (but not anticipating anything anytime soon, these TRD springs are great)
Thank you. I was around 85,000 miles when I installed them.
@@VampyreX13 thanks for the reply, that sounds like a good mileage to replace the stock ones at anyway. one more thing, did you get around to getting new LED turn signal bulbs? I saw your vid from a few months ago about how your old ones had gone bad and was just curious
@@alexle907 yes, I have new LED bulbs that I really like. I will post a review soon enough. I actually created a new playlist called lighting and moved all those videos to it.
i can use the trd springs on OEM struts? did you experience any problems?
Yes, they were designed that way actually. If you look at the Toyota installation guide, there is no listing for different struts. And no, I had no issues.
I put coilovers on my Scion Xd after I got coils and didn't like the ride height(gap)that was still there
Baltimore streets are awful and I also drive down a lot of roads that are heavily traveled by 18-wheelers (some of them look melted and warped), so 1" drop max it is for me.
Hi, where did you get that scion seatbelt cover?
@@aaronhernandez2971I found it on Amazon a while ago, but it's no longer available.
Awesome video! How has this setup hold up long term? I've 'heard' that the KYB shocks die real fast when paired with lowering springs. Have they held up fine with those Eibachs since they aren't very aggressive?
I actually have coilovers installed now, but KYBs are the OEM struts that Toyota uses with their TRD lowering springs. In fact, if you read the installation manual for the TRD springs, Toyota just reuses uses the factory struts. That being said, I had TRD springs on my 300WHP 2001 Corolla for several years with KYB struts and had zero issues with them.
Nice tutorial man.. love it.. I just bought some trd springs.. Question I saw on a few forums that some people experienced noise, creaks etc after installing these springs. Did your have any of this happen after installation? I plan on using the same struts.
I occasionally get a little noise going over speed bumps with the weather getting cold, but I sounds more like the shocks / struts compressing or possibly the sway bar bushings. Otherwise, my suspension is pretty quiet.
Hey I noticed the link with all four struts/shocks are from another supplier and you pay over $100 more then individually
The pricing or vendor may have changed then. When I originally posted it, it was cheaper to get the full set rather than the front right, front left, and two rear shocks individually.
@@VampyreX13 thank you for helping. I ordered everything today!
Hey where did you get your front bumper grille ? Or did you custom made it i been looking for a video on your channel that talks about it but i haven’t found one
I made it myself using honeycomb grill I found on Amazon. I didn't make a video of it since I didn't want to encroach on ScionGrilleLife (Blair Layman) who makes custom grills and he helped me out when I had some questions about making my own. It's not hard to do. You just need 1/4" thick honeycomb grill; there's a few different ones at amzn.to/3N9shm0, and 1/4" thick edge trim from amzn.to/3GrVNQh. I have mine secured with very small zip ties, so you can barely see them.
Whats wrong with the OEM Shocks n Struts? Do the KYB Perform better or make the car ride less harsh over bumps or uneven roads? And I heard that the rear camber gets funky because toyota didnt design adjustable rear camber for the lowering springs.
KYB is actually the OEM manufacturer for Toyota and many other Asian manufacturers. It usually costs less to just get shocks and struts from them instead of the dealership. As for the rear, the camber should be fine as long as you don't drop it a lot. I'm not sure how far, but I have a 2" drop and I'm still in spec. They do make adjustable rear camber arms if that's an issue. I actually installed a set in anticipation of having camber issues when I installed coilovers, but the shop didn't need to touch them when I had my alignment done.
@@VampyreX13 I just know that I have the TRD springs on my otherwise stock 2015 tC and people on forums complained the rear camber is not good or could be better, I m not to knowledgeable about this.
I can't decide between whether i want the trd springs, or the tein street basics (their most basic coilovers) for my tc gen2 - I'm not looking to slam it or anything, but i am interested in improving the stance and handling of the car while still keeping it comfortable for daily driving. what do you think? i'm new to suspension upgrades so i've been gathering all my information from reviews here on youtube.
If you're happy with the drop on the TRD's and aren't planning on adjusting your height, then stick with springs. If you're going to get coilovers, upgrade to a set that allows dampening adjustment or even custom spring spring rates if you're worried about ride quality.
Spring and coil over might be good idk but mounts don't use them I got 2 bad today..
Hi, I just discovered this video, now that you have installed lowering springs on stock suspensions, how does it feel since ? Did you feel any difference? Thanks :) nice video !
I love my setup. It handles great on the backroads and isn't too harsh when dealing with the "awesome" Baltimore streets.
@@VampyreX13 thanks for your response! I appreciate your feedback.
Your stock shocks are not suffering with your lowering springs after a few months ?
Already had lowering springs on stock shocks it worked perfectly without changing struts. But not pretty sure that my new care appreciate.
Thank you once again :)
I just bought my 2013 TC MT, it handles well, it came with TRD lowering springs and TRD strut bar. I wanted to get sway bars but theres none on ebay and brand new they are just too much. if i got with the mid chasis brace or traction bar do you think i would fel the difference? I drive it normal and its my daily driver
Get the mid-chassis brace. You'll notice an improvement with handling all around. That brace will have the most impact.
@@VampyreX13 also where are you finding repair kits. I want to replace the transmission fluid and I want to know if it takes gear oil and bolt torque specs
I haven't looked for repair kits. Do you have a stick or auto? While I haven't looked into what is needed to service my manual gearbox (yet), I know the auto transmissions are sealed (no dipstick) and require proper equipment to drain and refill them.
Dude I’d like to get up with to show you my setup and maybe you can help me with minor adjustments I’m in md near Columbia

@@VampyreX13 if you go, can you post some video?
@@edgars4532 Yeah, I normally just take pics, but I'll take some video tomorrow.
How was the ride back home? I'm glad I was able to find the issue.
Derrick, do you suggest replacing strut mounts as well, since the front suspension is dropped, pending condition of strut mount?
They are a wear and tear item. I've been pretty easy going on mine, so I re-used them this time around, but I'm going to change them out the next time I replace my struts even if they seem alright.
Well I guess we can keep using OEM shocks with lowering springs, if they are now lower than 40 mm. Otherwise, you will need sport shocks.
@@stephengordon5858 stock struts and shocks are fine with 1" max because the spring rate is still within the tolerances for them. The lower you go, the higher the spring rate.
I have been debating on doing springs or the whole lowering kit. I only want to drop about 1.5”. I seen tein and trd springs so what is better?
I haven't used Teins, so I don't have any personal input, but both are good companies and both will perform well. Some people have said the TRD / Eibach's are a smoother ride, but then I've also seen other say Tein's were smoother. At this point, you'll want to just look at the which one will provide the drop you want.
@@VampyreX13 thank you very much for the input. Last year the trd were only $250, this year they went up to $350. We will see by the end of the week.
@@VampyreX13 also, is there is a reason why you also changed the shocks?
@@k5_kiaupgrades622because I'd already put a lot of miles on them. I drive this car a lot.

@@VampyreX13 that make sense, Filipinos don’t age. Greetings from a Puerto Rican
@@soldado23 LOL! Greetings!
Are the end links neccessary?
Can you clarify your question?
Edit: Were these neccesary solely because you lowered the car or because it's ideal to change them at that mileage and while you already have everything apart? Thank you and great video 👍
@@FunGuyFruits I put the links in there because I've seen (in fact just last week) a lot of owners have issues getting the end links off. We had to drill the old one off on my friend's car because it was seized on and then we were at the mercy of the local stores for a replacement. Also, they do wear out over time, so replacing aging ones is a good idea. Always do them in pairs.
@@VampyreX13 okay. Makes sense! Thank you!
@DerrickAquino
So how’s ur KYB - Excel - G shocks and struts?
Is ur front a complete strut plus?
Any issue with them so far?
And what are ur thoughts about strut plus?
And what’s ur opinion about putting on Bilstein 4600 on the xB, from rav4 front struts and Tacoma rear shocks?
Also what are ur thoughts about KYB top struts mount?
I seen 50/50 of people got no issues. And others had them for few months and then starts to go bad.
And they said an oem and NOT KYB top strut mount is better.
I installed only the strut on mine. Strut plus is fine if you're trying to retain a factory ride since it includes the spring, but in this case, it doesn't make sense. I haven't used the strut plus series, so I have no input on their quality, but Toyota does use KYB as an OEM manufacturer. As for my struts, I haven't had any issues and am back on them after swapping back to TRD springs from coilovers. I have no opinion on the top mounts, but I usually stick with OEM for that. I don't klnow much about the xB to give any input, nor have I dealt with Bilstein since my last project car wasn't supported.
Where u find tha instructions on the pic.??
From Toyota.
Can the same shock absorbers be used?
Yes, as long as they're not too old or starting to wear out.
@@VampyreX13 thanks!!
The lower springs that I installed in my car are lower than the ones you installed, I don't know if they will be different or if they are weaker and that is why the car lowers more.
@@pablohernandeznunez4474 what brand and model springs did you install?
I think I know why, mine are more lower lol
@DerrickAquino Hey do u have a model number, for the rear shock bushings?
Cuz I have the bilstein b6 rear shocks off from 2nd/3rd gen Toyota Tacoma that doesn’t have those rear shock bushings with sleeves. And I was wondering if u know about them? If not, then there’s either order custom sleeves or very cheap brand new rear shocks just to get those sleeves.
I don't have the exact part number, but if you search for rear upper shock mount, you'll find what you're looking for.
@@VampyreX13 it’s actually rear bottom shock bushings. The one that has sleeves on them.
@@toyotabrony I'll check after dinner for the part.
@@VampyreX13 sounds good. Thanks man
@Toyota Brony 48341-75010 has the lower mount bushing and bump stop built into the shock boot.
Do you need new struts or are they optional?
It depends on the milage on your struts and shocks and how rough you've been with them. Since mine were already at 85,000+ miles, it made sense to replace them.
Weren't these included from factory for the RS 10.0 scion tc?
