One thing that keeps me watching your channel is that you give us your own evaluations and conclusions based on your own seat time in these cars alone. Sure, you reference generally held opinions by other journalists or the public sometimes, but really it's about what you can perceive yourself. Your comment about the twitchier rear end in the 992.1 was surprising to me - all the motor journalists said nothing but praise when it came out a year or two ago. Your honesty and nuanced reviews are intriguing to watch. You've been reviewing fantastic cars lately, it's nice to see keep up the great work.
The 992.1 GT3 has the same spring rates as the 991.2 GT3 RS - but without the larger contact patch of the 991.2 GT3 RS. The 991.2 GT3 has spring rates, half those of the 992.1 GT3. The front end is better on the 992.1 GT3 in large part because of the wider track (about the same as the 991.2 GT3 RS) relative to the 991.2 GT3.
Good review. I've had both gens and 992 is my clear preference. 992 GT3 has ITBs so it revs faster and fills the cabin with more engine sound. I do feel the 991.2 GT3 sounded better/louder overall, but about 5 months into 992 ownership, I prefer to hear engine sound more. Like you mentioned, the DW front suspensions + RWS makes the 992 rotate so much sharper and quicker that it gives more drama. You could never call 991.2 GT3 a lazy turning car, but that's what the 992 makes the 991.2 feel like. Overall I find the 992 to be a better everyday ride, but more playful when pushed. I absolutely prefer the 992!

I own a 992 and have owned a 991.1 and .2. Have enjoyed all 3. The engine sound was loudest from oldest to newest. Viscerally the same thing. Handling much improved with the newer cars with my track time at COTA 1 to 2 seconds quicker with each newer car. The 991.2 to me is the best looking but i like like my 992 the most
The 991.2 has 4wheel steering so I don’t see how you can say the 992 turns faster. I own the 991.2 and drove my friends 992 and didn’t think there was anything in the car that made it worth upgrading. In fact the 991.2 has more of the classic Porsche feel. I feel you’re understating the impact of a full aftermarket exhaust on these cars. Having thousands of miles on both platforms and multiple track days as well, adding an exhaust to only one of the two cars changes the experience quite a bit. The 991.2 with the full Akra exhaust has probably 20-30 more horsepower than the stock 992, and also makes the 991 feel and sound more visceral than it does in stock form. Great review otherwise

Some drama and some rawness really adds to the experience. I have a 718 GT4 with over-axle Soul exhaust. Clearly that’s not going to add enough HP (if it does at all) to compare to the 992. My experience though is that the 992 GT3 in stock form feels dead on the track in comparison. Very little drama to spice things up and it just doesn’t “feel” as fast even though it is obviously faster. Maybe just a little too polished in stock form for some taste? Just my two cents 🤷♂️
@@cpayne6 everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but calling a 992 GT3 “dead” on track lends me to believe you have little to no experience with one on circuit, or off
17:20 I totally agree about the sound comparison Fenton - 992.1 sounds a bit more digitised compared to the 991.2, which is unexpected considering that the 992 has ITBs. The 991.2 has a metallic 'shriek' between 7800rpm to 9000rpm (a bit like the VTEC effect) which the 992 doesn't (not saying it sounds bad, but not as visceral so-to-speak). I wonder how the 992 S/T would compare to these cars (dynamically) - it has a slower steering ratio and doesn't come with rear wheel steering unlike the 992 GT3, so maybe less skittish/nervous - and its a bit lighter too
@@joeracer302 aftermarket exhaust has nothing to do with it. Go watch other binaural POV videos of the 991.2 GT3 and compare it to the 992 GT3 - then come back to me. Stock 991.2 GT3 has always had a metallic shriek sound between 7800-9000rpm from the interior
I’m lucky enough to have had all gens in a manual and love them all some more so than others. Back to these two though I’m a very keen early morning mountain run driver mostly with like minded friends and we push on. The 992 feel is much more lively compared to the 991.2 when pushing on its a combination of better geometry/ chassis combined with the DW the turn in with up to temp cup 2,’s is mind blowing allowing you to carry more speed everywhere extremely engaging requiring your full attention and I love that in my weekend mountain car. I’ve played with my suspension tuning on all of my GT3 s very early into my ownership to get more feel more bite up front this car I haven’t touched in nearly 2 years of ownership. These cars do need an exhaust and some of the sensation you were getting from the 991.2 would have been connected to the the exhaust. The 992 just needs the OPF removed and souls valve module to keep the exhaust open 100%. 992 is The ultimate road weaponry. Note: you looked quicker in the 992 it’s not hard to do. And the manual GT3 has a mechanical diff not electronic - a 991.2 and 992 GT3 in the manual is a truely analog experience - man trans mechanical diff and driver aids of its a drivers dream!
Good comparison. I've driven both and owned two different 992 GT3s (one standard and my current full Manthey spec). I think on canyon roads / rallies, they're both phenomenal cars, with the 992 having a tiny edge in braking and turn in. The engine sounds smoother in the 992, like it just WANTS to rev to 9,000 rpm all the time. At the track, there is no comparison (particularly with the Manthey GT3 spec). The newer car turns and brakes at another level. There are a couple small annoyances on the new car, like no dedicated button for homelink and a slightly more distracting PCM over the 991.2, but it's a far better car. That said, nothing beats having both, as they're both STELLAR cars!
Having driven a 992 GT3, nothing in the 991.2 generation will compare when speaking to front end feel and grip. Otherwise both the 992 and 991 platform have their fans both for good reason.
Great video. I have a 991.2 gt3 and got rid of my 992 gt3 touring as 90% of my driving is on the uk roads (generally poor) and the steering feel of the 991.2 is better and the steering is less manic in bumpy surfaces than the 992. In other words I agree that the 991.2 is the better road car. The 992 is mega on a track….. great video. 👍 👊
I’d love to see a comparison between the 991.1 and 991.2 GT3….. yes I know the 991.2 GT3 is undoubtedly better but would love to hear your views comparing the two Also that and some 991.1 GT3 RS content as those are becoming more affordable Now too
The best one is the one you have in your garage. Owning one of these is truly bittersweet, because what comes after? Based on the euro regs coming down the pipe… nothing good. These engines are not long for the world. I have a 991.2 in Rhodium Silver that I’ve been absolutely obsessed with since the day I first drove it. I literally have to keep myself from driving it every day, not from a value calculation standpoint, but because I want it to last forever. Mine has a GMG exhaust and sounds like absolute heaven and hell all rolled up into one when I rip on it.
I own the 991.2 GT3 manual but drove the 992 MT (and PDK) to see where to go next or stay put. To me the generation to select is dependent on transmission preference. I find the .2 manual the better driver's car and I think the 992 is best equipped with the PDK.
Great review as always. The 992 GT3 is faster on a track thanks to a more advanced suspension but I'll take the 991.2 GT3 as though not quite as sharp handling its pretty close and crucially for me is the better looking car. The 992 GT3 has got too wide now imo and looks bloated next to the relatively taught looking 991.
I’ve watched this you for a couple of years now. It is excellent. Really knowledgeable and the comparisons are fascinating. Very well played all round. And you can drive. I wish you had access in the US to the Renault hot hatches I’ve owned and own. I’d love to know what you’d think of them.
Haven’t watched the video yet but am looking forward to seeing what your opinions between the 2 cars are as I’ve had both 991.1/991.2 GT3’s before moving to a 992 GT3 almost 2 years ago. I feel the 992 GT3 is the far superior drivers car as I love the double wishbones incredibly sharp front end, far more rigid body structure, the torque and crispness of the individual throttle bodies and overall build quality. Misses are the 991.2 I think sounded slightly better, had a slightly better seating position with a lower dashboard, I also miss the all analog dials and actual physical buttons. Overall 992 is a step on but 991 (particularly 991.2) is still a fabulous choice
I'm curious how a 991.2 RS would compare to a 992.1 GT3 as far as front end grip. Everyone says it's the wishbones but how much is just the tire width, alignment and track width?
Owned the 991.2 gt3 in manual and now the 992 gt3 in pdk. I prefer the 992. Both cars need an after market exhaust (had a jcr exhaust on the 991). All said and done I do not miss the 991.2 gt3. Waiting to see what Porsche has in store with the 992.2 gt3, somehow they always make them better.
Wow. I been waiting for this matchup. AWESOME. I drove a 992 gt3 pdk in Vegas track and wow what a car, but feels so large compared to my 981 GTS 6spd. I think i prefer the 991.2 just for the smaller size.
First thing I would do is way narrower tires like 235 n 245 rear, so u can actually drive the car on public roads n enjoy it n have it move around n control it.
Mate, I love your videos and I own a manual 997.1 C2. But I think you and other motoring journos and “influencers” don’t always tell the viewer the reality of owning these manual cars. What I noticed in this video was that you didn’t manage to get out of 2nd and 3rd gear in either car. The gearing is mega long, buyers are being short changed if one cannot rev out 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th at any point in the road. On track it’s different of course, but most buyers don’t use the cars on track. You guys control the narrative which in turn impacts demand, price etc. How Porsche get away with this is down to you guys. Keep up the good work.
I did mention the long gearing, though. It's not ideal for canyon driving but I stand by my statement that the long gearing is justified given what this car is designed for.
Exactly and why i opted for the pdk for mainly onroad use and best decision ever...on track even though pdk is much faster i was missing the manual and didnt care about trying to set the worlds fastest lap time
You sound like a conspiracy theorist. They control the narrative? You mean they give their opinion in their videos? Oh god, it must be a mainstream media plot to make all manual cars have tall gearing so people stop buying manuals.
What exactly do you mean when you turned on the PASM damper and said, "This feels much stiffer"? Does this change the spring rates or the shock characteristics?
Good review, the spring rates on the 992.1 GT3 are too high and the rack ratio too quick for a lot of roads. I haven't driven one in two or three years but that particular car tram lined quite a bit, which was a function of a combination of camber, rack rate and tire width - I found it less enjoyable than the 991.2 GT3 in the real world. I wouldn't make too much of the ring times, Cup2 R are good for ~ 1s to 1.5s per minute ~ 7 to 10.5s round the ring. Moreover, the 991.2 GT3 time will have been done on the older N0 version of Cup2. What I've found is the difference between the 992.1 GT3 RS, 991.2 GT3 RS and 992.1 GT3 around a track comes down to which tires they're shod with and the type of circuit you're on. The goldilocks GT3 is the 991.2 GT3 touring with manual gear box - genuinely lovely sports car.
@@Zygrene dude, I’ve been reading UK car magazines since the 1970’s, when their content was quite engineering focussed. Your journalism is fast approaching that standard - God’s speed my friend and thank you.
U should really try a 430 scuderia....in terms of theatrics and driving feel, nothing compares. Makes my 997 gt3 and 991 gt3rs feel rather tame. What the porsches do better is that they dont feel fragile and everything always works
Well, I can’t say how their driving compare, but I prefer the elegance of the 991.2. Similar, I’ve always preferred 997.1 over 997.2 GT3 for similar reason, those earlier cars just have a more elegant look to my eye.
Personally, I’ve always felt the 997.2 and 991.2 look better than their .1 predecessors. I do feel that 997.2 was peak GT3, both from a looks perspective and from an analog driving experience perspective. But the 991.2 is a close second. The 992 has an improved looking front end, but the rear is just way too fussy and lacks the elegance of all prior GT3 designs. But hey, any 911 is amazing and certainly any GT3 is a thing to be celebrated, especially if it has a manual gearbox.
Love your Porsche reviews along the GT line. I think you need to try a 992.1 RS (I don’t remember if you did already), which in my mind again begs the question of how can it keep getting better lol (I’ve never driven an RS 911)
10:20 revs to nine-grand lol. first time hearing it this way. I had to go back and listen to it again. "Take it up to nine-grand!!!" sounds like something at the poker tables.
For me the 991.2 is better for the streets, and the 992 for the track Why U didn’t say anything about the poor torque on the low rev range of the 992 ?
I think you'll find that with this viewpoint, you're in the minority. You buy a GT3 for the driving experience, no? The 992 is a superior driving car than the 991.2 No question. Hands down. But I hear what you're saying about being more digital.
@@thomasferrarojr.9772 as others have stated, I am in the same camp as Chris Harris and Misha. Driving experience is lost in the 992. Yeah the handle is better, but that’s one part of the experience.

Hey man…. I really like your reviews as they tel me what I really wanna know …. Keep em coming and looking forward to more content in the future
991.2 wingless (touring) and 992 winged are the best looks wise.
What exactly do you mean when you turned on the PASM damper and said, "This feels much stiffer"? Does this change the spring rates or the shock characteristics?
I think your experience mirrors Chris Harris’ and echoes that the 991.2 6sp may be the road car to have.
For the money, the 991.2 is the peach of the whole range.
Yes a 997 may be preferred, but the price of those is insane now.
Agreed!
@@Zygrene dude, I’ve been reading UK car magazines since the 1970’s, when their content was quite engineering focussed. Your journalism is fast approaching that standard - God’s speed my friend and thank you.
@@I999-g2s wow that's high praise. I aspire to reach the level of my favorite reviewers from the UK, someday.
@@Zygrene LJK Setright set the bar very high…
997.1 was so much more pure in its looks. I dont understand the love for thr 997.2.
@@technom3598 maybe it’s just me, because I have a 997.1 and the grass is always greener!
@@I999-g2s 997.1 is the goat. Taco wing for life. Plus no silly motor mounts and splash graphics. Pure sports car.
Aesthetically I've always preferred the .2 models within each generation. And 997>991>992. Newer ones have gotten so big.
Love your Porsche reviews along the GT line. I think you need to try a 992.1 RS (I don’t remember if you did already), which in my mind again begs the question of how can it keep getting better lol (I’ve never driven an RS 911)
Would love to try a 992.1 RS, but that would probably only make sense on track.
Can’t wait for the 992.2 GT3T - Am hoping it gets the street tune of the ST
Love this comparison!
I can only dream of owning a GT3 some day. But for now, I can aim for a 981 GTS and mod it to some extent to bring it close to a GT4
I widened the front track by 12mm on my 991.2 and it transformed it
What setup? Thx
10:20 revs to nine-grand lol. first time hearing it this way. I had to go back and listen to it again. "Take it up to nine-grand!!!" sounds like something at the poker tables.
One minor thing is that I prefer the mirrors on the 991 haha looks more elegant than the 992. I am a little biased though 😉
Good exhaust you should get titanium awe straight pipes not catalytic converters and muffler
Why do you think the double wishbone front suspension gives better front end grip? (clue: it doesn't almost all the time)
Do people buy these cars for comfort and quiet?
Id like to drive these both soon and get a good feel for them 💪🏽🙏🏾
Did you preferred one of those to the 997.2 3.8RS you drove previously ?
You should straight pipe the 992 and the 992.1
Great video! Do you prefer GT4RS or 991.2 GT3?
I filmed that exact comparison: ruclips.net/video/fMg1Au-VIbo/видео.htmlsi=8P4wflvKrd5rgFve
Awesome reviews man!
loved how neither is specced withe sport chrono package
For me the 991.2 is better for the streets, and the 992 for the track
Why U didn’t say anything about the poor torque on the low rev range of the 992 ?
I didn't feel any noticeable difference in low end torque between the 991.2 and 992.1 but I also didn't spend much time below 5000 rpm
@@Zygrene below 4000rpm the torque is really lower on the 992. I think because the new OPF
On dyno is almost 100nm less at 3000rpm
Which road is it? Is it somewhere near the Bay Area? I’d like to take my car to there, looking like a great winding road !
Top Notch Review! 👍👍
So the 992 has no Lemans start? End of an era.
nice review bro
991 generation of GT3 will be peak Porsche. The new interior is too digital, too generic, and loses the trademark gages.
I think you'll find that with this viewpoint, you're in the minority. You buy a GT3 for the driving experience, no? The 992 is a superior driving car than the 991.2 No question. Hands down. But I hear what you're saying about being more digital.
@@thomasferrarojr.9772portant le son de la 992 est moins beau et l’arrière d’une 991 est plus beau , ceci n’est pas discutable 🤩
@@fredericberthou La 991 est plus belle. Convenu. 👍🏼
@@thomasferrarojr.9772 as others have stated, I am in the same camp as Chris Harris and Misha. Driving experience is lost in the 992. Yeah the handle is better, but that’s one part of the experience.
I’m not sure I agree there Chris Harris as much as I like him had other motivations happening in that space. He raved about the 992 went to all the trouble of making sure he got an allocation went full on customising it making it his own etc hmmm sorry bit sceptical.
Porsche calls that Race Tex
I like the green one, because its green.
How do the shifters feel compared to the S2000?
S2000 shifter is still #1 for me. More mechanical. Only downside is that it's easy to mis-shift.
Those wheels have the worst curb rash I've ever seen on a gt3 haha
Great review. Akrapovic is pronounced "Uh-Crop-Uh-Vitch"
Chris and misha prefered the 911.1 after owning the 992.2
What nonsensical comment is this? What is a 911.1 and there is no 992.2 yet. Lol Jesus
👀 tc off?
green .2 GT3 is what dreams are made of. I'd have to sell my GT4 and risk divorce to buy a high mileage boring color one lol
No Chrono in the 991 😏😏🙄
Give me a break
“It wants to rev more smoothly” 😂 okk?? Car reviews are so dumb
👌🏾❤️👌🏾
these cars are severely underpowered, C8 corvette is better
You don’t know what an analog car is. The 991 & 992 are the furthest cars from analog. Go drive an aircooled car.
“Analog” is code word for rattles and clunks
He owns an NSX with a manual steering rack. He knows what analog is 😂.
The way things are today, a car with a manual is an analogue car. End off.
