Mass effect was great because we could follow Shepard and the gang over the years, fall properly in love with them and invest in them and the choices they've made. Without it, it wouldn't feel like mass effect... just an easy way by using the brand to get existing fans to play it

It's hard to understate the importance of the influence of Star Wars on Mass Effect, and the trilogy structure is one of the most important aspect that the latter has borrowed from the former. One big story made of three separate parts that each feel like their own thing. The ME trilogy isn't just Shepard's arc, it's also Tali's arc that sees her starting exiled from her planet and hating the Geth, to someone at peace with the Geth who comes back to her home. You can only do this with that degree of impact if you're using the trilogy structure.

Being able to transfer your saves was mind blowing at the time. I’d never seen anything like it. The ability to tell your story, and see the consequences of your actions, is a level of world building and story telling that only a video game can do. It's been done before. In Champions of Norrath 2: Return to Arms you could upload your character with full stats from the first game. Even what your character was carrying, money etc. Items cost way more in the sequel as there was new outfits and armours as well as abilities added to your magics tree. Really helped because in the first game my character made millions in coin but you can't make money the same way in the sequel as it was basically dropping items and re-uploading your character so you could clone your items and sell the copies to make more money.

So yeah, i think it should always exist, and frankly, if I may, I would suggest that we even further deepen it... If not at greatest detail level, I think there should always be some level of carry over data - because I think thats what makes ME, ME... if that makes sense.

One thing kids today have to understand is that the visionaries like Hudson, Watamaniuk, Walters and the old guard don't grow on trees. Those people WERE de facto Mass Effect. I can understand the difficulty of creating a trilogy of games where choices matter throughout the entire thing, but with that said I also would prefer ME to come out in a series of trilogies. I would have very much preferred Andromeda to have fleshed out into a trilogy. The whole reason, in my own personal opinion, that ME is so very popular is because of the myriad of ways to play the protagonist. Not only having a large variety of ways to play and decisions to make, but to have those decisions have different results in game. Yes it's difficult to create something like that and have it be immersive and engaging, but ME did it once and hopefully it wasn't like lightning in a bottle and can be done again.

While I would love to see Bioware work on this spinoff, I also want to see them give us some more of Shepard, and SLOWLY phase the Commander out as s/he becomes Captain, Admiral, etc. while younger characters become the new protagonist and crew.

This almost unique structure to ME made it special and had you invest the time in the game. I don't really mind how many games it has, but Mass Effect needs to stick with a single protagonist and their crew for them. At least until we reach good end point to pass the torch. As long as they have a PLAN this time. It's pretty clear at this point that with the Original Trilogy, they made it up as they went along, and I think they hurt it in the grand scheme of things. Same thing can be said for the Star Wars Sequel trilogy.
So I just want them to plan out the story, and make it as many games as they need.

There's already a link between ME3 & ME-A as Liara worked with Alec Ryder on the Initiative by sharing her research techniques. Due to Cryo, who knows where and when Liara will pop up. For example the Reapers span time & space so technically the dead Reaper in the clip could be anywhere, including Andromeda. Maybe the Kett had run in's with the Reapers and so needed to create a way to repopulate their race quickly, before a Reaper invasion, hence transforming the Angaran.
There have already been theories that Shepard is put into Cryo, well maybe he's not only put into cryo but is sent to Andromeda to fend off another Reaper invasion, to save everyone once again.
Maybe the trailer depicts Liara and team arriving after Shepard in Andromeda and picking up his trail. A dead Reaper, a piece of N7 armour..
There are probably a million holes in this theory..

I think that the reason why BioWare may be wary about the idea of "the trilogy" is not because of migratable choices and characters, but because they don't want to be bound by the number of games they must make. Let's be honest as much as we like ME2 it really hadn't push forward the main story of Mass Effect in any considerable way. We still didn't know we're the reapers came from or how to defeat them and the galaxy hadn't started preparing for them. So objectively we ended ME2 in the same note as ME1: the Reapers will arrive and we have to defeat them somehow. And because of that ME3 had to fill all these gaps so we'd got deus ex machina the Crucible, but we also had to unite the galaxy, but there was also the Cerberus plotline and of course there are the Reapers. But it couldn't be done any other way, because Casey Hudson already told everyone that Mass Effect will be a trilogy, even though they hadn't planned it at all, so we ended with the final Mass Effect story that can be sometimes a mess.
If BioWare doesn't commit to the idea it a trilogy, they can make as many games as they need, be it two, three or even one or five.

II fell in love with Mass Effect because I fell in love with Shepard, Liara, Tali, Garrus, Ash, Kaiden, Wrex, Grunt, and you get the idea. Seeing the story evolve over three games was amazing. While I like the idea of a continuation of the franchise as a series, I would love to see it happen something similarly to how the Midkemia novels by Raymond E Feist played out. There were the original novels, which focused on certain main characters and events. As the novels went on, we saw new characters introduced- and this is important- as the older characters became older in terms of the story. These older characters eventually became more minor characters as they aged, then die. There were transitional stories stories in between. There were later books that referenced the events of the older books as events in the history of the world. If Mass Effect did that, then I could see it being an amazing series.
That all being said, I feel the way ME3 ended with no real closure, begs for a fourth Mass Effect that takes place post Reaper War, with Sheppard and company (those that lived through the Reaper War) still alive. I'd like to see that one last story of 'The Shepard' that is hinted at in the epilogue of ME3. Then, maybe a new game where Shepard and crew are clearly older, but still important, such as Anderson and Hackett are important during the Trilogy, while the younger generation are moving into their own. Maybe one of Shepard and Liara's little blue daughters is all grown and engaged in her own important mission. Or maybe young Lt James Vega is now a seasoned Commander and an N7 trained Alliance Marine, while Shepard is an Admiral. Something that is a natural transition, that carries on the story in a way that is not abrupt, such as the Dragon Age games are. That way, the fans and devs get the best of both ways of continuing the story.

I think it'd be more practical and impactful to have trilogies that follow on from each other but don't carry saves across from each other trilogy.
Sure, some fans might not like having a perceived 'canon ending' to each trilogy, but I'd rather have a specific state of the galaxy explored in depth than have a shallower story that has to account for every choice made throughout the series by minimising all the consequences into a more manageable and less branching narrative.
In other words, I'd rather each trilogy allows the player to branch out, make crazy decisions that drastically alter everything, and have the following trilogy focus in on one path, rather than make all the branches broadly the same to keep a consistent story no matter what.

It would expand the Mass Effect universe without the weight of it's success being dependent on a fixed story. It is open-ended and it is exactly what Bioware needs. I am not saying that Bioware can't put out another masterpiece of a trilogy. But I doubt they would go in with the expectation to create a trilogy especially since Andromeda failed and the audience doesn't see Bioware in the positive light that it used to. I just want more well written Shepard stories. MEA just didn't invoke the same kind of connection with the new (and forgettable) characters. I can't even remember any of their names other then "Path Finder". If the new Shepard Story is a trilogy, so be it! In turn, if it becomes a series of different or less universe ending threats then I am still probably jumping in for the ride. On a final note, hopefully my girl Tali is right there with me to whatever end. 😂

I feel like I need more closure on Shepard’s story. I’m not sure I’m ready to move on from the Normandy family yet, the next game, I feel, should be something along the lines of actually properly giving Shepard and their crew a satisfying and fleshed out ending, where Shep settles down with their romance, and all loose ends are finally tied, like the dark matter plot line. Until then, I won’t feel like I’m ready to move on to another protagonist

The story should continue in Andromeda. I know a lot of fans have a bad taste in their mouths for Andromeda but I’m pretty curious to see what happens next.
Also I’m gonna call it now. If BioWare has the BALLS to put wolf girl aliens in the next game and make them actually interesting and not cringy fan service.
Hands down I’ll preorder it. I’m very based.

A new trilogy gave me another idea. To make the Legendary Edition there must be a team familiar with the old code. What if they update the ending of Mass Effect 3 to flow into Mass Effect 5 instead of using the current endings. That update can be applied shortly before the release of Mass Effect 5. No one liked that ending anyway. I also would like to see in Mass Effect 3 how Mass Effect 4 happened.

With Mass Effect BioWare achieved something amazing. Shepard despite being a soldier, was designed in a way, that every player could say "my Shepard". I would argue, trilogy would fail if ME1 wasn't heavily dialogue/plot focused. I dunno if "modern players" are patient enough. I'd love to see new trilogy but within the timeline before ME3 ending. ME4 and whole trilogy would require old talent that BioWare had. Also there is no Mass Effect without Jack Wall, Sam Hulick or Richard Jacques. They have created soul for ME universe.

I figured the game out after getting past where I was stuck and improved my person in the process. When the story was coming to an end I loved the battles and where they left it but I want it to continue as I want a proper end to it. What happened after the Remnant's tech terraforming machines were all switched on and connected and how those planets look after years of forming/habitability.

Interesting video. I suggest to interview or contact Drew Karpyshyn too. Mac Walters contribution to Mas effect universe is a very controversial one. The lead writer of ME1 was Drew Karpyshyn. His writings laid the foundation for the ME universe. He wrote more books-novels which enriched ME Universe and made it vibrant and believable. But, behind the scenes, he was discarded, and Mac Walters gain more influence with ME2. Mac Walters was the lead writer for ME3 game. Which had one of the worst ending story and that was Mac Walters "contribution". Let's give credit to those who really deserve it, and this is Drew Karpyshyn. Definitely not Mac Walters.

My first playthrough of Mass Effect was super late. (Spoilers plus IK outcomes change due to choices but my experiences are my "canon".) All DLC for ME3 was released before I ever played ME1. Once I discovered ME1 I was hooked on the universe and the crew. My first playthrough I went full Renegade and the stand off with Wrex was probably the most emotional intense gaming experiences I've had. Then in ME2 my favorite Salarian loses his life protecting the galaxy. Finally, in ME3 Shepard my avatar in this amazing world gives his life destroying the essential evil that has throughout history been a cosmic enemy.
My point is Mass Effect has to be a continuous story. My story and your story can be different and that's part of the experience. If they turn ME into a linear path without giving you incentive to discover your own way then that isn't Mass Effect.

If there is a new trilogy, It should be focused on Andromeda. Diehards should just let Commander Shepard rest and enjoy their retirement. After all the trauma of the Reaper War they endured, they've earned it. Now I'm not against an older Shepard appearing and aiding Ryder in the Andromeda Galaxy (like Marcus Fenix in GOW 4 onwards). The grizzled Alliance Hero aiding the young upstart Pathfinder. Also, I'd love to see Shepard experience the culture shock of all the new technological innovations in the Andromeda Galaxy.

Standalone ME games, or a series of games with minimal bleed across one game to the next would be a betrayal of one of the central ME tenets. The ongoing narrative, the greater depth and character development/growth afforded by multiple entries in a series of games is far too important to ditch for solo outings. It would be a huge mistake IMO and 100% the wrong direction to take the franchise in. TBH, if they did that then I would seriously fear for the franchise's future. It would worry me that these core principles were even up for debate if they are. Fortunately, I suspect we're worrying about nothing and that the grand design would be closer to what we got with the trilogy, it just wouldn't be badged as a trilogy because it could end up being two games, four games or however many.

I don't think a trilogy is an answer necessarily but I hope Bioware goes for a God of War type approach. Just like God of War, Mass effect needs a strong reboot with an overhaul of the gameplay. I don't think that they need to bring back Shepard like kratos in 2018 god of war but I do think Bioware can learn a lot from Santa Monica studio and why they finished the series with Ragnarok.

Not a fan of Mac Walters. Drew Karpyshyn is what made the trilogy so great, up until he left BioWare before 3 was finished. Mac Walters and Casey Hudson are to blame for the lame ending for 3 and Andromeda. So unless they get Drew back as a writer for the next Mass Effect game, I'm keeping my expectations very low. I'll still play whatever comes out next, but my hype remains at a minimum until I see actual evidence of good writing again.

I really want them to explore some of the hinted elements of Andromeda's deeper conspiracies, but the Andromeda name is absolutely toxic. I hope that we get more than just codex entries to tie the two together, but I really want to leave the worst of Andromeda behind. I never really bonded with the Angaran, and I never felt like the Kett were anything other than cardboard cutout baddies. But there's so much more under the surface with the Initiative. I'm working through the books now and I hope we get some expansion of those stories in side missions. Mostly, I just really hope for a return to "space weirdness". I want to feel lost on desolate worlds, like I did on ME 1, while tying the threads of NPCs personal stories together.

  • @AudeKhatru
    @AudeKhatru Год назад

I do not think a trilogy is needed, but to provide the same sort of continuity, I think that there does need to be a single protagonist, rather than the multiple protagonists we see in Dragon Age (and I love Dragon Age). What I would like to see is for them to not be bound by a format. So, not a trilogy, but maybe episodic, but with the same protagonist, and carry over saves.
And, I am of the opinion that it cannot and should not be Shepard, as much as I love FemShep.
But, I think they should work on the episodic concept by coming up with story ideas. Maybe a one shot, maybe something that requires two games....maybe four, and of course, it could be three, but dictated by the story and not some artificial idea that there must be three.
    But absolutely, a carryover protagonist.

Shepard forever! I would certainly love a new mass effect series. But even the original creative team did not get to fully write their story which is one reason why ME3 basically threw out so many story elements from ME1-2 which made the ending kind of jarring. MEA was well...I did not get the same feel and attachment to the story and characters. I can't even remember their names. On top of that Bioware is not even Bioware anymore...I love the game for it's story and how it pulled me in...but can it be done again? I can only hope. And OMG keep management out of it this time. :)

I think, if they explicitly don't want to do a trilogy, it's because they don't have a true vision of where they want to go with Mass Effect. Doing an open-ended "series" means they can meander and not really commit to anything, and be essentially aimless. This is not a good sign, at least from a story perspective. If they had a vision, they would necessarily have a definitive direction in mind.

Even with the rumoured new Mass Effect game being made that'll include a couple of characters from the trilogy I suspect there'll still be a load of hate toward it unless there's a star wars style return of the shepherd clone war sort of thing.

  • @TKMcClone

There is too much story left with Andromeda to just leave it off. I can't see Mass Effect moving forward by abandoning Ryder, it would be a step backwards. I really enjoyed ME:A and the combat system was enough to get me invested for 4 Ryders. The only thing I lament is the lack of choice and the morality system for multiple playthroughs and subsequent games. I doubt we'll ever see a trilogy that works as well together as ME1-3. I think it would be interesting if they did something that affected story outcomes based on the "emotional, logical, casual, and professional" choices you've made. There would need to be new races to interact with. Ryder's personality traits and communication style would affect outcomes. I don't see the ME franchise working as well without a connected plot culminating in big conclusion. My big fear is that they'll try to turn in into Assassin's creed.

If the new game follows the events of ME3 and we all assume it will then will this religion follow it. While i've always love AC, but i believe it the last games havent done exactly a good job telling the stories of their protagonists (my favs are kassandra and eivor tho). they get being blame for technicalities of gameplay and that already happened with Andromeda.
