I think the reason why I find dub so hard to watch is because anime dubs are more or less bottom of the barrel voice acting. You compare those voice actors to proper actors you'd hear in Disney, Pixar or Dreamworks. Hell, even The Rock can voice act fairly well. Okay, that's unfair on the VAs. Since you can tell some of them have really good voices or acting, but are held back by a amateur sound mixing or poor directing/not having time or access to source material. Also a competitive environment where they hire the best instead of a stagnant shortlist (even JP has this issue but their VAs are a bit better of playing a wide range of voices (except Hiroshi Kamiya(jokes))).

Why wasn't Paths of Glory (one of the greatest films of all time) filmed in French instead of British English? This is something that is argued over for a long ass time. The obvious answer is the talent available. Most of the time, that type of talent is just not available, or they don't know about it.
I tried dubbed anime in various languages... For me, the biggest issue isn't dubbed anime. Is English dubbed anime... I'm not sure if it's the american voice actors, the language itself or the way they do it like a western cartoon for 14 year olds... But something feels off...
I think a lot of people who hate on dub Anime. Don’t ever take it to consideration that other people cannot watch sub anime. like, for example some people have reading disabilities so they need the dub if possible. It’s not always because some people are lazy. Sometimes you don’t have a choice.
Latin Spanish anime dubs can be very similar to Disney/Dreamworks' (same VAs and directors). Its high quality and a well oiled machine, as we dont have many local cartoons.
I can't read, well I can but not often I have a attention disorder so I cannot read and watch at the same time subs I either focus on the writing or the show and I usually read too slow or too fast so it doesn't match with the audio, I hope this changes in the future but I cannot for the life of me watch a subbed anime at all
Since I started watching anime through TV broadcasts, I originally experienced them in dub. in the early 2000s. I only got into subs a little later (in the 2010s), partly because they were the quickest way to watch ongoing anime once you've caught up. I've been watching a lot of dub recently, and it's really just a matter of comfortability. Sometimes I just don't want to keep reading subtitles, and I started watching anime primarily in dub. Unless, there was no existing dub yet. The result was that I still pretty much enjoyed. Listening to English VA actors interpretations of a character can be really refreshing. I think people who look down on dubs will actually be surprised at how dubs actually come onto their own. so yeah, there's nothing wrong with trying both.
It really sucks how poorly voice actors are treated in the West. They are working really hard to get roles and when it comes to animated movies, they get passed over for Hollywood actors who will half-ass their performances and will still be paid more.
stuff like that actually depends on your opinion I personally enjoy dubs more than subs because I'm kinda lazy to read, dubs has great voice acting too like the Naruto dub I know Naruto kept saying BELIEVE IT every single second but his voice gets better in shippuden and let's not forget about Madara and Pain's voices, Sasuke's voice in dub is kinda close to his in sub, and there is also great dub VC that I think did their characters better than the japanese VC like Aizen because you see Aizen is suppose to be a cold villain and smart the sub voice acting for Aizen doesn't give that cold vibe he sounds more intimidating than cold while in the dub Aizen is cold as hell and you can also fear him because the coldness in his voice
Personally i watch sub and dub, but watch dub more, not because of like subtitles, it's mainly because one sub only watchers ruin it for me, and two ive grown numb to sub anime.
Take Naruto for example, the audience will never know what "Dattebayo" is when watching them in the dub - that's a unique feature that the author wants to add. Furthermore, some characters become more distinctive when they are voiced by actors who speak local dialects in Japan, and I don't see any English version that does the same. So in my opinion, English dubbing is simply helping viewers understand the content quickly, nothing more, nothing less!

i started watching anime ~12 years ago when anime wasnt considered cool yet, and im not native in english so i have a really really strong preference for subtitles, but i liked the baccano comparison, i would like to find out what its like to watch dub and enjoy it and id like to try someday
I watch Digimon subbed because honestly if I don't, I'll have to wait a year or more for the dub. But I watch dubbed anime precisely because of that energy usage. Most of the time I spend watching anime is during that short hour after I get home from work before bed, or on one of my days off. I read a lot anyway as an aspiring biblical scholar. This is my TV time, and I just don't want to play what I call "eyeball ping pong". As for the "lack of emotion" argument, I have never understood this. I grew up on a lot of English animated media from Disney Princess movies to super hero cartoons like Ben 10 and Teen Titans Go to Pixar films. And honestly I can go from one of those to a dubbed anime and not hear any drop in acting quality. Speaking of Ben 10, did you know that after the time skip, Ben is voiced by Yuri Lowenthal who voiced Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto, Keigo Asano in Bleach, and other characters? Steve Blum is notable not only a Spike Spiegel and boat load of Digimon characters, but he also voiced Wolverine. Their acting performances are only ever criticized when the roles they're playing are anime characters. This shows me that there is some psychological bias towards the sub and not any objective quality in the acting itself. And I've watched plenty of comparison videos and am just like "These are both great performances in their respective languages! What's the big deal?" And imo, if I could be permitted to bring g up the shows with the best English acting, it would be Bleach and Attack on Titan. Just listen to Erwan's "My Soldiers Rage" speak in the dub or Ichigo's "Getsuga Tenshou" in a comparison video with the JP version. Or Eren shouting "Reiner! YOU TRAITOR!!!!" Those are fire performances imo!
I'm just so glad we have very good dubs in germany, seriously, the majority are really good or sometimes even better than sub imo. But yeah, not gonna lie, I tried out some english dubs and....wow....they do kinda suck.
Good video. I prefer subs for the same reasons as most people. But lately I can’t watch anything without also doing something else at the same time, so dubs come in clutch.
6:37 There are great voice actors in the west. I know most of them have worked in the DCAU under Andrea Romano: 1. Kevin Conroy (RIP) 2. Tara Strong 3. J.K. Simmons 4. Mark Hamill 5. Clancy Brown 6. Susan Eisrnberg 7. Phil Lamar 8. Michael Rosenbaum 9. Maria Canals-Barrera 10. Nathan Fillion 11. CCH Pounder 12. Tim Daly 13. George Newbern 14. Dana Delany 15. Carl Lumbly 16. James Woods 17. Gina Torres 18. Dante Basco
great video, quite late to the party, i was the exact opposite from your experience i watched dubbed as a kid as we all did DBZ bleach ect then i got into more anime stayed dubbed, then i got clowned for it switched to sub then couldnt get into it, the voices are great aside from some just dont fit the character, i got dyslexia and it takes me awhile to read books so reading subtitles is hard in fast pace anime, i cant actually watch the show and some english voices are way too iconic for me to watch in sub the same way everyone feels about some sub voices, like spike goku ichigo ect its just what i watched as a kid. now all that said i do watch sub for the anime that have really bad dub voice acting of course but there are alot of anime im interested in but cant watch it cause its too fast pace its rough out here
I also went through a sophomore "sub only" phase a couple years into being an anime fan. And while, for the reasons you eloquently stated, most of the time the subs are better, it is definitely not an "all or nothing" proposition. I learned this when I decided to watch Attack on Titan a second time in subs on Crunchyroll. I was shocked to see some of the wording to be over simplistic and lacking nuance and depth. I later found out that while complicated, for early AOT Crunchyroll does not even use the "official" English sub translation. It is complicated, but many of the early subs are only a step above a pirated English manga fan translation. On the other hand, the AOT English dub scripts for the first three seasons are written by J Michael Tatum, who does the English voice of Erwin. I since found that he is the literary genius also responsible for such wonderful scripts/characters as Rintarou Okabe from "Stein's Gate." (In that show, while it is cool to hear the original say "Mad Scientist" in English - Tatum's translation captures the visceral experience of his over the top persona with references and inflections that we Americans can better associate with. While it is technically not a direct accurate translation, I think the overall end-feeling much more closely matches the end experience for a native Japanese speaker and the original. So which is more "accurate" in the end?) ...and that's not even going into how there is always a degree of separation when hearing something not in my native language. To this day I still have a far tougher time recognizing particular Japanese voice actors compared to English ones, Not to mention the difficulty trying to pay attention to the animation while trying to read subtitles and create an internal monologue.... So now I lookout for scripts written by/with J Michael Tatum. The same can be said for other classics such as Watanabe's work ("Cowboy Bebop," "Samurai Champloo" etc.) But I realize that this is by far the exception and not the rule. Even though I am constantly on the lookout for quality dubs, you are correct that the field is so nitche and small that even now I only know a few other names. So yeah the sub elitists are correct most of the time, especially with older or less mainstream titles. However my absolute favorite animes of all time are those glorious quality dub exceptions. And I am so glad I am open minded enough to not have missed out on them, and I truly feel sorry for those who have [missed out] because of some silly inflexible elitism.
But why does the problem only come out with English. In Italian most dubs I hear sound just better than the original Japanese voice actors. Every VA does god’s work… check the Italian version of Kira’s confession for example, that is the first take and done by Flavio aquilone when he only was 18.
Some countries are less or more experienced in voice acting. For example, the Russian dubbing industry is very professional, always has one of the best dubs for movies and it always feels natural (But TV dubs are not that good sometimes)
It depends on which show you watch and what the vocal direction. Some shows do it better than others, some are just bland asf. There are only some series I watch dubbed.
If you happen to be interested in learning Japanese, anime subtitled is a good place to start. I've been watching subtitled anime for years and have even learned a little bit of Japanese in doing so. For instance, I can turn off the subtitles on a movie I'm familiar with such as Akira and follow it moderately well. Sure, it can't give you a full understanding of the language, but it's valuable.
One of my early times of joining the sub v dub crowd is the time I was in the first few eps of one of the Cardfight Vanguard G seasons, and when I heard the voice of Kazuma’s bro Onimaru(Shiranui) in English, I mentally barfed and just watched it subbed from there. And the subbed Shiranui was… Well, I was a teenage girl at the time lol It think it was the last two seasons before the reboot? Idk, I still have a couple eps of Z to cover.
@@kermitgotthesickkicks4265 No, I'm a dub-first pal, unless I can't (again, the G-era, or when the show just started and hasn't been dubbed yet, or the season isn't finished so the sub is the way to catch up but I can watch it again in the dub later, or just This Specific VA Preference). Kinda depends, really.
Its ok to start watching anime thats dubbed to learn to watch anime but sooner or later its good to advance and start to want the real handling, since when they dub they actually change what they are actually saying and dont just translate for the most part, to get it to fit somehow and they often leave out parts or add new stuff or totally change lines and lose alot of meaning to what they are trying to express with subs u mostly get the actual correct translation of what they are actually saying (apart from bad fansubs) and with the best emotion and meaning behind it by the PRO voice actors from japan, wich few voice actors can match.. its should not matter what country or language a movie/series is in watching it in Original that it was made from should be what u watch it in to get the original feeling it was meant to transmit... i always look what language its originally made in and watch that with eng subs or perhaps sometimes my native subs, but always try to keep the audio in its original setting to get the original feeling it was made with

I went from dub to Japanese 🤣 to sub back to dub.. There was not alot of dub/ sub late 90's early 2000 so I have to sit and want Japanese dub for a while 🤣🤣
This is a two year old video, so I doubt this will be seen, but I honestly just don't get the sub vs dub stuff. Yes there are some old dubs that sound bad, but that was just bad voice acting in general. You used a clip from My Hero and made comments like: "Wait why does it sound so bad, and so awkward" It doesn't. It sounds like people talking. I literally don't see what you are talking about. There was nothing wrong with that dub. It just sounded like people talking normal. I watch dubs to this day because it just sounds like people speaking the language I understand. I'm just not hearing this big difference everyone keeps blabbing about. :/
I’m simply too stupid to read the subtitles. I also don’t really “watch” anime, I more so just listen. (Weird I know) so having anime be in English is just a thing I like.
Something I've noticed is that the only country that has managed to have constant good dubs is Brazil. They're amazing and most of the time better than the dub from the US, and on some rare occasions, better than the original sub itself.
Popular dub animes get more funding so that they can have the better actors. Notice you don't see the better voice actors in harem or isekai trash. The good voice actors such as Steve Blum or Aleks Ye are usually used in Shonen animes.
Add an anime fan, lines in anime are just cringe when heard in your native tongue, people prefer Japanese cuz they don't understand how it sounds 💀. Like the "friendship speech" in English sounds cringe.
Personally I actively watch both sub & dub back to back. That may be weird for others, but I enjoy how an anime is interpreted between English and Japanese, and it gives the anime more rewatch value (to me that is)
Bro this is the same exact experience of mine as well when i first got into anime and now iam also bored aswell. So by your reccomendation iam gonna try some dubbed animes.
One anime that I cannot watch unless it gets a dub is the Tatami Galaxy. I just can’t keep up with it. 😂 I kind of wish Wes Anderson and his recurring cast of actors could be convinced to do a dub of that, but there’s no chance that that will ever happen.
Eh, the first anime I watched that I knew was anime, One Piece, I watched in sub (I had seen Sonic x and Kirby: Right Back At Ya on youtube in dub). I didn't actually get really into anime until years later though. It's not that I especially dislike them, I've just never really done dubs when subs are an option.
I'm not a fan of Disney's English dub of Castle in the Sky as I regard the original Japanese version to be one of Miyazaki's masterpieces. Changing the score is also one of my pet peeves when it comes to Disney's version.
There is some real gatekeeping in the anime community. I keep hearing that I have to watch anime in Japanese or it's not the authentic experience. However the most authentic experience is the light novel or manga and I want to watch anime not read it. Dubbed anime is easier to watch then sub especially if you are a slow reader. You also spend more time watching the visuals instead of looking at the bottom of the screen. Not to mention English is my spoken language so I want to experience my media in English. I should not be shamed out of enjoying something just because I prefer to watch it a specific way.
Doesn't matter the quality of the dub, I still watch it. I watch anime for the eye candy and cool visual shit happening, I dont want to have to avert my gaze to read subs.
The problem with dub is not translation. It's the horrible pacing and dead flat tones. Like someone gets a cue that a scene is dramatic and he says a sentence aggressively, but somehow fails to sound like a natural person talking.

Also a competitive environment where they hire the best instead of a stagnant shortlist (even JP has this issue but their VAs are a bit better of playing a wide range of voices (except Hiroshi Kamiya(jokes))).
I watch ALL anime in english dubs. I dont give a fuck what the weebs say. I prefer dubs, suck it up and deal with it.
Same bro facts, Fuck those weebs I don't give a fuck.
Same bro facts fuck them weebs bro I don't give a fuck.
Fr me too. I just want to watch it without having to read subtitles every second
@@josiahtheking3078facts I have no problems watching it subbed but if it has a dub and it's not absolutely horrible I'm watching the dub. It's nice not having to lock in reading subtitles all the time
i dont speak japenese so i cant understand what they say so i watch dub
honestly? aleks le and jonah scott are some of the best english VAs out there and they deserve more credit, they're even mfkn RUclipsRS
As someone who has adhd watching the dub helps with the experiance but it also depends on anime its self.
I disagree with your implication that the MHA dub is bad.
I would watch dub first and if I think it’s bad I switch to sub it’s simple
Does it matter if it's sub or dub there both in English at the end of the day.
the acting in sub flows naturally with the show so can't help it. I love subs. but there are some anime with great dubs like fruits basket and rosario/vampire and sailor moon that i prefer over the sub. LOL I actually love to read so I don't mind reading the subtitles. I also am learning Japanese so it helps for me to watch Japanese animes and movies.
Wouldn’t Vinland saga be better in the Scandinavian Languages? (It starts at Iceland and its about vikings invading Britannia)
JJBA works in dub though, I watched it in dub and sub (Cause Im from Tokyo, I can at least understand what my parents are saying)
Oh yeah, I'm sure it would, I just don't know any way to watch it in those languages
Yes, I’m visually impaired and stuck with dubs. Until they send me scripts in large print or braille I’m forced to use dubs lol
Tell me crazy, but I watched Kaguya Sama in English dub, Spanish dub and Original Japanese. (I'm Spanish speaker)
I kinda like dubbed too but stuff like dattebayo, or yare yare daze just sounds so much better in subbed
(there was also the shinobu aaraa aaraa)
I did what anime dubbed when I started, and then I started learning Japanese and just been watching with either Japanese subs or no subs.
Personally i watch sub and dub, but watch dub more, not because of like subtitles, it's mainly because one sub only watchers ruin it for me, and two ive grown numb to sub anime.
0:36 36 seconds into the video and bro already knows my life story
I told you, it's the life cycle of all anime fans
Great video. Me personally myself i watch both dub and sub. Get the best of both worlds that way lol
Yep, I think that's the right way to do it
Take Naruto for example, the audience will never know what "Dattebayo" is when watching them in the dub - that's a unique feature that the author wants to add. Furthermore, some characters become more distinctive when they are voiced by actors who speak local dialects in Japan, and I don't see any English version that does the same. So in my opinion, English dubbing is simply helping viewers understand the content quickly, nothing more, nothing less!
When’s the hottest Pokémon tier list coming???
I prefer Dubs because I watch it for the visual art. My eyes can take in everything on the screen.
Elitists are not soy. It's the other way around, woke VAs literally putting western feminism in dubs.
What are you even talking about?
@@Koji-Alistair If you have to ask
@@soulmask2781 I have to ask because you like spouting random nonsense just to try and discredit dubs.
@@Koji-Alistair People who like subs are elitists/purists, or tend to be more elitist/purist. People who like dubs are normies and people who can't read, and "soy", that is weak people, usually have lower IQ, since social sciences is the lowest IQ degree you can get in a university, according to a study of IQ and education domain. What I said made 100% sense.
i started watching anime ~12 years ago when anime wasnt considered cool yet, and im not native in english so i have a really really strong preference for subtitles, but i liked the baccano comparison, i would like to find out what its like to watch dub and enjoy it and id like to try someday
I still watch dubs for the main fact that I would like to look away from the screen and and walk out the room and still know whats going on
I watch Digimon subbed because honestly if I don't, I'll have to wait a year or more for the dub.
What's the big deal?"
And imo, if I could be permitted to bring g up the shows with the best English acting, it would be Bleach and Attack on Titan.
Is there a big dubbing scene over in Germany? They probably translate a lot of American films too right?
@@NitsuaVids Yes, very big, we have a lot of (good) translations for really underdog anime as well, and yes, they also translate american films.
oh yes! I love the german dubs!
@@CrazyDoodEpicLeaves That's really cool. I didn't know that
Good video. I prefer subs for the same reasons as most people. But lately I can’t watch anything without also doing something else at the same time, so dubs come in clutch.

great video, quite late to the party, i was the exact opposite from your experience i watched dubbed as a kid as we all did DBZ bleach ect then i got into more anime stayed dubbed, then i got clowned for it switched to sub then couldnt get into it, the voices are great aside from some just dont fit the character, i got dyslexia and it takes me awhile to read books so reading subtitles is hard in fast pace anime, i cant actually watch the show and some english voices are way too iconic for me to watch in sub the same way everyone feels about some sub voices, like spike goku ichigo ect its just what i watched as a kid. now all that said i do watch sub for the anime that have really bad dub voice acting of course but there are alot of anime im interested in but cant watch it cause its too fast pace its rough out here
I also went through a sophomore "sub only" phase a couple years into being an anime fan.
So which is more "accurate" in the end?)
...and that's not even going into how there is always a degree of separation when hearing something not in my native language. To this day I still have a far tougher time recognizing particular Japanese voice actors compared to English ones, Not to mention the difficulty trying to pay attention to the animation while trying to read subtitles and create an internal monologue....
So now I lookout for scripts written by/with J Michael Tatum. The same can be said for other classics such as Watanabe's work ("Cowboy Bebop," "Samurai Champloo" etc.)
But I realize that this is by far the exception and not the rule.
Depends because if you don't understand the language it would sound good to you.
@@kingwolfboss6144 but I’m Italian. Things sound better if you don’t understand them indeed.
Some countries are less or more experienced in voice acting. For example, the Russian dubbing industry is very professional, always has one of the best dubs for movies and it always feels natural (But TV dubs are not that good sometimes)
DUBBERS CHANGES THE WORDS AND MEANING OF THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE. Ai is better to translate japanese to english.

And the subbed Shiranui was…
Well, I was a teenage girl at the time lol
It think it was the last two seasons before the reboot? Idk, I still have a couple eps of Z to cover.
Please tell me you aren't cringe with the sub vs dub crap.
My biggest question is, does the English version change the plot or story.
Its ok to start watching anime thats dubbed to learn to watch anime but sooner or later its good to advance and start to want the real handling, since when they dub they actually change what they are actually saying and dont just translate for the most part, to get it to fit somehow and they often leave out parts or add new stuff or totally change lines and lose alot of meaning to what they are trying to express with subs u mostly get the actual correct translation of what they are actually saying (apart from bad fansubs) and with the best emotion and meaning behind it by the PRO voice actors from japan, wich few voice actors can match.. its should not matter what country or language a movie/series is in watching it in Original that it was made from should be what u watch it in to get the original feeling it was meant to transmit... i always look what language its originally made in and watch that with eng subs or perhaps sometimes my native subs, but always try to keep the audio in its original setting to get the original feeling it was made with
I do watch dub becouse it's more powerful to me, the potato chip is the perfect example as I wouldn't have laughed... at all becouse I wouldn't have heard it like that, same with the whole of psiki k. But I watch one piece in sub cus there is no dub but ye the dub wasn't that good atleast at the start but I don't care at all

DEATH NOTE IN DUB IS JUST BETTER
This is a two year old video, so I doubt this will be seen, but I honestly just don't get the sub vs dub stuff. Yes there are some old dubs that sound bad, but that was just bad voice acting in general. You used a clip from My Hero and made comments like: "Wait why does it sound so bad, and so awkward"
It doesn't. It sounds like people talking. I literally don't see what you are talking about. There was nothing wrong with that dub. It just sounded like people talking normal. I watch dubs to this day because it just sounds like people speaking the language I understand. I'm just not hearing this big difference everyone keeps blabbing about. :/
I watch media in whatever language its originally in
I’m simply too stupid to read the subtitles.
I also don’t really “watch” anime, I more so just listen. (Weird I know) so having anime be in English is just a thing I like.
saying most people wont recogonzie a dub va and literlally showing the most famous dub va, lol
I never knew that Ben 10 was in the same show as Principal Perry
Add an anime fan, lines in anime are just cringe when heard in your native tongue, people prefer Japanese cuz they don't understand how it sounds 💀. Like the "friendship speech" in English sounds cringe.
Personally I actively watch both sub & dub back to back. That may be weird for others, but I enjoy how an anime is interpreted between English and Japanese, and it gives the anime more rewatch value (to me that is)
Bro this is the same exact experience of mine as well when i first got into anime and now iam also bored aswell. So by your reccomendation iam gonna try some dubbed animes.
Dattebyo is essentially an exclamation mark. So, yeah, those idiots with VIZ "translated" punctuation >_
Yeah, this video wasn't really meant to be a "why you should watch dubbed anime" video. More like just a "watch whatever you want" type of video.
I'm not a fan of Disney's English dub of Castle in the Sky as I regard the original Japanese version to be one of Miyazaki's masterpieces. Changing the score is also one of my pet peeves when it comes to Disney's version.
Before I watch a show I listen to both dub and sub to see what I think fits
