She (Koga Aoi) had plenty of roles before, much more than 2 or 3, but Kaguya is her first major role and she is relatively inexperienced compared to most lead voices. Still, she has at least 20 roles listed on myanimelist alone. I wouldn't call that "one of her first roles."
My sister won’t watch subbed anime with me because she has ADHD and dyslexia so she can’t really focus on what’s being said and done. Because of this I watch a lot of anime both subbed and dubbed and I honestly don’t have a preference anymore. For the most part I judge it based on plot and not acting
@@itsashun7799 Dubs have gotten better, so it's an actual choice these days. Dubs used to have like one or two decent voice actors and the rest was awful, along with poor audio quality.
and you'd think it'd be enough to shut down any argument in favor of dubs, but no. Sub is inherently better for no other reason besides the fact that it's treated as an actual career and has the funding and support over there, unlike here, it's as simple as that. Sometimes miracles occur and you get Death Note, FMA, Baccano! Cowboy Bebop, but they are few and far between and guess what, those are all shows from a decade+ ago, the dub scene has only gotten worse in reason years thanks to the introduction of simuldub, where quality is now considered of less importance to speed.
@@maadtee6281 #1 Sure, the Japanese gets the handicap that we don't get what they are actually saying. #2 But that doesn't use how the English VAs SOUND. So many of the voices just sound TERRIBLE, regardless of how good the dialogue is. An since the Japanese Women tend to have a higher pitched voice on average, that also sets a higher bar. So a lot of Dubbed voices will sound less cute by default. #3 IRL Acting does NOT Automatically translate to Voice Acting. It's why many video game companies hire on some Big Name Actor, only to find their performance bad, and having to hire a REAL VA instead. Jack Black is an AMAZING VA, because he puts his WHOLE BODY into his voice performance to really connect with the action. It's why he keeps getting Hollywood Movie roles for his Voice Acting for Cartoons. #4 Bouri is a MODERN example of Quality Dubs. A SimulaDub (Dubbed Eps happening at the same time as Subs). To the point where I was DISAPPOINTED that due to Covid, the last half to 1/3 of the Anime was SUB ONLY. In the past we've had Anime like Chrono Crusade which was 100% better dubbed, including dialogue. We KNOW it can be done, but unfortunately, too many companes are concerned mostly with speed or voices sounding "Good Enough" or "Decent". To me I look at it not unlike filler: There's great examples of it being well done. Unfortunately most companies don't bother doing it right, and instead just shovel cheap trash that doesn't even fit often times.
@@TheAyanamiRei 2. Cute still doesn't equal to the va being good at all it tends to be a fetish 3. I never said anything about voice acting being equal to acting at all 4. In the past you could say there were many bad dubs but now there are few quite a few bad dubs in anime and people will tend to go with what they prefer with sub only watchers having a constant bias that sub is better then dub even when a dub is just as good then sub
I think part of that is with places like Funimation and Netflix allowing you to properly compare side by side quickly and easily...it's a LOT easier to the differences. Also that more Dubs are following closely to the scripts of the Subs, compared to earlier years where many popular series were censored. Plus with the Internet it's easier to show people better examples of GOOD Dubs even if they are older. Now you can watch free clips easily to compare, which was something you couldn't do before, unless you had the DVD. An with VHS it was Sub OR Dub, but NOT BOTH.
Jackstyle On RUclips at least. Tiktok still has people who are generally rude to dub watchers. One of the voice actors(He’s like a new voice actor as well) on tiktok even got attacked(?) because his voice didn’t match what the fans want for the dub. Which when he saw those comments that were basically, he made a joke about them and then talked about them seriously. I do watch dub, so I find most dubs that I watch are good, but today I found the comments on a tiktok being like: “BSD’s dub is trash” “Dazai’s dub voice is horrible” That’s their opinion, but I felt a bit hurt since that is a good dub in my opinion
When he kept saying"I'm NoT KiRa" his voice annoyed me so bad that I had to switch to subbed whenever he came on screen but L's dubbed voice actor is actually INSANELY talented
I just watch subs cuz they’re usually the first to come out. I don’t really mind dubs either since some can be pretty great, just finished watching a dub of re:zero after I finished with a sub and imo both are pretty well done
Facts, do NOT learn Japanese from anime. Instead, you want to watch actual TV shows from Japanese TV if you want a more accurate learning curve. Anime is over-dramatized and it’s not how Japanese people speak.
I feel like alot of people hate dub because they first watch a show in sub then expect the dub voices to sound exactly the same as the sub.I mostly watch dub and when compare the voices to the sub it sounds weird.A good example is goku from dragonball z.
Yeah a lot of people lose their shit if the dub voice sounds different from the sub. it prevents the dubs from being their own thing and instead it becomes about how well it can imitate the sub
Me I watch mostly dub because my eyesight is bad so its hard to read but I will continue the next season in subs if it's out and some dubs are better in my opinion
I started with dub actually (deathnote) and it was a very good dub. Then i started watching anime only in dub but then for a chnage i started watching in sub and i still do. There are some good dubs (fmab, deathnote, tokyo ghoul, ghost stories). But i still like sub better. When you get used to something you like that better.
I wouldn't say that they expect it to match and sound the same. It's more about how GOOD it sounds either way. Like Samurai Champloo Dub sounds NOTHING like the Subs, but that's a GOOD thing. People say it's a REALLY good Dub. Like compare how cringy Old Dub Shinji is in Neon Genesis Evangelion to Subbed Shinji or even Netflix (New) Shinji. You can't tell me the the Old Shinji Voice (Middle section) is anywhere NEAR as good as the other two. In fact I'd say it's downright CRINGY: ruclips.net/video/wuvzfW62DVc/видео.html
Pretty much this. It becomes jarring when the voices change. Even with English dubs when there are voice acting changes it can become awkward for listeners and they'll have to go through an adjustment period before they become accustomed to the new voice.
One more factor is maybe because Japanese voice acting was shaped for anime, that's why Japanese language in anime differs from the actual Japanese language. Just like when Garnt said that learning Japanese from anime wasn't a good thing.
Or it is because we dont understand Japanese so it seems well kind of like those people with fake Russian accent they sound good to us but to people from eastern Europe it sounds like gibberish
I mean there ARE some great English Dubs. So we KNOW it's possible. Hell Netflix's Castlevania has AMAZING English VAs. I mean the dialogue is all translated, and that can change just Dubs to Subs, or even just which company does the Subs. Chrono Crusade is actually 100% better in both Dialogue & VAs. Tenchi Muyo sounded different, but just as good as the subs. s-CRY-ed Dub was well done and matched the Japanese well. etc. It's like FILLER: We KNOW Filler cna be good, REALLY good. Like in Naruto having Shino LAUGH HYSTERICALLY was GOLD! Also when they gave Hinata extra screen time. But mostly? Filler is Trash. It's rare anyone takes the time to do it well. An the same is true for English Dubs. It CAN be done. We have several examples. It's just most places don't take the time to do things great.
Yep totally agree with you most people dont realize that when a anime series gets made into dubbed anime the dialogue gets changed by the voice actor that's doing the scene. It is explained to them before the take. Then they come up with the line that fits that scene but it's not always accurate! I definitely prefer to watch anime the way it was orginally made even without the subbed titles always been a goal of mine. Same with manga!
@@maadtee6281 "Us" While there is absolutely truth to your statement, people like you forget that you can't generalize sub watchers. There is no "us" in the context of your statement, since you really can't generalize "us".
@@projectmessiah I disagree with the OP that it's not funny, but I think a lot of the comedy in Ouran relies on reading text while a conversation is happening. Even as someone who prefers subs and can read quite fast. the pace of that show can make some of the onscreen gags go by too fast to appreciate. Ouran is one of the few shows where I think the first time watch for Eng speakers should be the dub because it definitely makes the comedy easier to understand.
@@WalkInMyPawsteps It's pretty rare for text on screen to happen faster than I can read. Unless it's more than 1 person talking at a time or something written that they translate that they move away from quick Like I could legit keep up with Excel from Excel Saga, and she talks a mile a minute. Tho the whole "I can't read fast enough" IS a major thing I hear from a lot o Dub fans.
There’s so many great dubs. I don’t even understand why people say “dub bad”. I could name probably 30 “exceptions” (good dubs) off the top of my head.
As someone who watches both sub and dub, there’s still a ton of fantastic dubs out there I’ve come across. We’ve come a long way since the 90s when before Cowboy Bebop most dubbing was poorly produced like Sailor Moon or the original Dragon Ball Z for instance. And yes the talents of Johnny Bosch, Crispin Freeman, Steve Blum, and Bryce Papenbrook are some of the best voices in the business too.
Generally watch subs but there are a few dubs out there which I just love. Baccano I would never touch the sub of, Code Geass is amazing voiced especially Emperor Charles and Death Note is another solid dub. Also Ghost Stories for the meme.
Gintama has some of the best voice acting, I always remember them. If they voice act in another anime I can always tell because they have a unique voice.
Oregairu. Takuya Eguchi is just sooooo good! As for dubs, I find Netflix does a good job with theirs. Violet Evergarden and LWA were two anime i watched dubbed and enjoyed. I don't have a preference for either, I guess.
I haven't seen every episode of LWA's dub, but I haven't been impressed with what I have seen. Sucy and Andrew are stand out performances but I've seen the english voice actors of the rest of the cast do a lot better in other works.
@@jadeorbigoso5212 i say aot is better in sub bc aot's sub as a head and shoulder above the rest of any casts. like aot's dub isn't bad even though i don't like erens voice, but most aot voices are just too good in sub. i'm not hating on dubs, i watched half my favorite shows in dub and liked them more than the sub: death parade - steins gate - id invaded - assassination classroom
That's what they said in the podcast. Dubs these days are never better than the sub, they're just decent, unlike before where you had trash dubs but also amazing ones.
American dubs always miss the mark for me on the overall tone, as if the actors don't really understand or care for their characters. The more emotional lines feel either cringy or way too overboard, or lifeless and apathetic. I suspect it also has to do with very bad voice direction. I feel the seiyuu industry as a whole is not only more mature, but way more professional. The only dubs I find to sometimes match the japanese quality and being overall good are the older latinamerican spanish ones from the 90's and 2000's (newer ones have sadly lost quality), they knew how to deliver proper emotion and tone.
while many English dubs match the tone of Japanese VA, often the dialogue feels flat and without much emotions. For Dub you may get great acting, but sub it's almost guarantee a great performance. Go check out the New Year Seiyu Special, where you see VA doing live performance on roles like : Ristarte, Edward Elric, Naruto, Kaguya, Gilgamesh Sometimes the material just can't translate into English. Like Dio saying MUDA in Dub. For Gintama, how do you even translate the jokes or even find another actor to play Gintoki as perfect as Sugita Tomokazu Although I prefer Sub, some Dub is fine to watch, Ranma 1/2 in dub and it's quite good I think Black Lagoon probably fit the story more to have Dub, since they curse a lot in the show, but for Japanese there's no such straight "fuck you" word
While I do think that is the case for many series I do think there are some where the english dub has more emotion in the delivery, the best example I can think of for this is dragon ball, mainly Z (kai) and super
@@carterpaine5079 Angels of death of one of the dubs that I prefer because the VA for Zack is truly an amazing, talented guy and because of it I watch it instead of subbedm
Without much emotion? I get the sub are 99% of the time are better, but to say there is no emotion is just dumb. A few examples of anime dubs that bring great emotion are one piece, made in abyss and my hero. There's plenty more but modern dubs definitely bring emotion as long as the voice director is completely useless
@Mohamed Mahjoub I prefer japanese sub but I am not the kind of person to try and steamroll someone liking it in a different language, sometimes it's the dub likers who try to hate on people for liking sub
@@eddie-zu7kg NO LMAO. Over half all of the sub watchers I’ve seen think that’s dubs are shit and most dub watchers I’ve seen think that they’re both good but prefer dubs. Also dub is better
I love dubs, and appreciate all the hard work that goes into them. Not all are great, but I'll always prefer my native tongue over having to read subtitles. Kudos to Japanese voice actors though.
Well you haven’t seen Italian moves, where the lips don’t match what their saying. Seriously Live action shows how dubbing just isn’t as good as the original source.
You'd be hard pressed to find many objectively terrible dubs past 2007 or so, imho. The main problem with dubs is the lack of actor variety. Hearing a new voice actor in any English dub is surreal. As far as Japanese voice acting goes, Gintama is a show that I don't think any dub could ever do justice in English. Tomokazu Sugita is phenomenal.
@@animusswtor4822 Absolutely. Gintama often has references to stuff only Japanese viewers would understand, and Monogatari is full of Japanese wordplay. There have been a few attempts to dub Gintama, all of them fairly meh.
The main reason why dubs reuse actors a lot is because dubbing anime is very technically challenging. I'd recommend watching a video called "Why Dubs Use The Same 12 Voice Actors" by The Cartoon Cipher; he goes into an amazing amount of detail on the topic.
The voice actors in the Gintama dub do their best but its more of the translation not working. A lot of the humor does not work well in English and the references do not make sense to an English speaking viewer.
Mm I don't know, in my experience translating my manga into English There are several things that are lost, so leaving the original voice can even keep a little of that initial "idea" At least for me But then there are people - Point to Connor That skip the cinematics in any language So what difference does it make XD
@Najawin Context matters as you say, but I think the end result is still that subs are usually better. I think the more important question is whether or not the dubs are decent. Because as long as they are of decent quality, they will have done their job properly.
Some factors that disadvantage dubs come from translation. Translating the script, and doing it in a way that sounds like natural English, and then having the voice actors match lip flaps and emotional beats on top of that, is a pretty crazy challenge. The original voice actors have the advantage of being able to act without those kinds of constraints, so even a passable dub is kind of impressive.
@@TheHappyZappy No, the Japanese VAs don't need to match lip flaps because the voice recording is done first before the final production where the animator adds the lip flaps and adds expressions according to the VA's voice to perfectly match the lip flaps, that's why, anime in Japanese really feels like the characters are alive and talking. Often, VA and the concerned animator responsible for animating a character sit together to perfectly add expressions perfectly.
True but there are times where they are clearly not trying. For example if in Japanese the character said Son Goku. With no extra speech because the character is in a blind rage. There is not enough reason in English it should become Goku the despicable, or Goku the x, when In both English and Japanese The Character is Audibly still called Son Goku. The lips are just fine in either language and they should have kept it as is.
I have a preference for dubs, but I will watch subs if there is no dub available. My reasoning is 1. I can focus more on what is happening than what is being said. Focusing on the bottom third of the screen makes it really easy to miss details. It also gets annoying having to rewind a segment over and over if the subs are too fast or multiple characters are talking at the same time. 2. I can pick up more nuance in my native language. The overall tone/emotion of a line comes across regardless of language, but stressed or emphasized words mean nothing to me in Japanese because I don't speak the language. Dubs used to be really bad, but I think we are at a point where most dubs are at least good with some being great.
I will sometimes watch dubs if its good. Most of them have the generic high-school voice for a non generic show. If they had generic voices in “a silent voice” i wouldve lost all immersion of the show. But i think they nailed what they were going for
I really agree except I’ll watch whichever is ready and available. I can easily quickly read a subtitle and then watch but I do like dub just as much really
I dont really care about the sub titles anymore you'll get used to it after a while but I can appreciate the voice Acting dubbed Shows way more cause I can understand it more. Not saying that I dont appreaciate japanese voice acting but it cant inspire me to watch a series
This is flawed you may pick up the nuances but u miss the other things that subbed anime brings dubs normally sound cheesy it may be because you find it hard to read which is reasonable.
@@Jonzelle185 A preference can't really be "flawed" given that it is an entirely subjective opinion lol And it's not so much that it is hard to read, it's more just that I'd rather not split my attention. I'm a subs first kind of watcher, that being said Yu Yu Hakusho is the only time I watch dubbed with subs. plot and joke changes, and no annoy Baton voice. Definitely. He also voiced Entei and Mewtwo in the Pokémon movies. Also, it wasn’t until much later that I found out that Brock’s voice actor also voiced Kaiba in Yugioh 😯
The real reason to watch subs instead of dubs is that the subbed version is released at the same time the show airs in Japan, while you often have to wait for the dubbed version
no, japanese dubs always has better quality 🤝, but if there's no choice (like for example when i look for oldschool anime and the original ver is just, gone.) then maybe I'll consider watching it with dub.. you just can't argue it man... @@nemuiro15 I'm a non native English speaker and I've always like dubs better.. It's subjective.. I could care less about the quality.. the subs may have godly level of voice acting in terms of quality but I'll still prefer the dub over the sub
The whole process is also different between subbing and dubbing. Usually with animation, voices and scripts are done FIRST so that the animation can be built around the expressiveness of the voices. So then the characters act and look natural with that order of business. Meanwhile dubs have to cope with doing it after the process which is hard, as they can hardly do their own thing like the JP actors can do and have to really squeeze into and match the role instead of it coming naturally.
The process you described actually only applies to American animation. In anime, the animation is actually done first, with the voices being supplied later. From what I’ve heard, it’s less expensive that way because they don’t have to do a million takes.
@@Gemnist98Everyone who has seen at least 1 anime knows Akira recorded dialogue first and animated the mouths to match the dialogue... so no, it doesn't only apply to american animation.
@@Gemnist98 In anime, voice acting is actually done first after the storyboards are done. I don't know what kind of animation your are talking about but that is not Japanese Animation as far as the industry is concerned. Maybe hentai? Because hentai is animated first before recorded. Than seeing a character being flat faced then needing an intense emotional voice acting.
It’s a great dub. The only thing I have against it is they forgot about Issei referring to Rias exclusively as “President” until it became a major plot point in Season 4.
The dub is great, though I switched to the Japanese after a few episodes and I couldn't stop because it was so funny to hear Eren Yeager's VA playing the main guy. 😂
Personally, I prefer Dubs. Not necessarily because of whether I think one is better than the other, I just prefer to listen to people speaking in my own language. Though I will admit, I can't stand the Tsundere voices in Japanese.
I also can't stand tsundere voices in japanese. Another critique I have of Japanese voice acting is how similar many voice actresses sound in some occasions (makes sense since it's Japan). In contrast to males, who usually have a great variety in terms of tone and pitch. I personally prefer female voices in english. I get tired of almost hearing voices sound similar.
How about that it’s hard to watch fast paced shows? Too often I’ll miss details because my eyes are darting back and forth to the read the subtitles and view the animation
Well for me i prefer to watch it in its own language. I mean, i wouldn't prefer watch a Japanese dubbed Phineas and Ferb, as much i wouldn't prefer watching anime in dub. Anyway, i respect everyone who's watching dub, and have a great day!
I love subbed cause when u get those “we need to talk English” parts they’re GOLDEN! Like In Jojo the “OHHH NOOO” and etc said in English in the subbed
I've been watching anime ever since I was 8 and I never understood this whole "sub is better than dub" argument. I watch both dub and sub equally so it's hard to say which one I watch more. I know there's not a lot of great dubs though but they're some good ones too. At the end of the day, it's just a preference!
Not to be rude but... You just explained why people prefer subs. There are good dubs, but those are good in spite of being a dub, not because they are. There are obviously exceptions, but for subs, its the norm to find high quality voice acting.
@@amanekun1243 and the fact that there are dubs that are just better than the subs makes that argument entirely hollow, to say nothing of the advantage of not having to read the sub so you can keep your eyes more focused on the rest of the screen. I speak English, with a dub I can take my eyes off the screen for a second and still know whats happening. with a sub I blink and have no idea what's going on.
This is biggest con of subs. It's especially annoying when you eating something while watching, you have to focus your vision on food for a few seconds, and in this 2 seconds there can be lots of text or important information :/
If you have a good enough reading speed and are careful with how you eat, it's rare to missing much if any important info. Then again I was able to keep up with Excel from Excel Saga subbed, who talks a mile a minute. Seriously, if you're going to complain about the typical sub, go watch Excel Saga and come back. The problem comes when you are reading letters or a single word at a time at best. Once you start reading 1.X+ words per second, Subs become easier. Tho sometimes I'll agree I want to do something else. Like if I'm making food, I'll want a Dub. If an Anime doesn't have a lot of Action, then it can be good awhile doing something else. So it IS frustrating that if you do anything else, you miss out on what's happening in a sub. Though for me it's a worthy trade with my reading speed, and how much I NORMALLY hate or disappointed by the Dub voices. Then again you get Anime like Bofuri as a recent example, where the Dub sounds MUCH Better than the sub
one thing i noticed about myself is that i watched 90% of shoujo dubbed and pretty much all shonen and seinen in sub (including shows with classic dubs i grew up with like dbz and yugioh) besides specifically yu yu hakusho and trigun.
I prefer subs more often than not but most dubs are still good enough that I'll watch over sub just so I don't miss any dialogue or information. Except comedy. Comedy most cases I'll watch over sub.
I would say I only go for dubs when there's an unholy amount of dialogue. I cannot imagine having to watch death note in sub, I'd probably have to pause every 10 seconds. The exception to this is space Dandy, which has a fire dub but not a particularly large amount of dialogue. I think I liked this one bc space Dandy really feels like an American show, so hearing the English vas kind of fits
I watched Death Note in subbed since Netflix only had Japanese and Polish audio. I don't recall having to pause much but it was a while ago. One problem I have with subs is that the wording can be a little off.
Can't watch Anime if it isn't dubbed. i can't focus on text and video my concentration waivers plus i think the emotional scenes are better understood and realised in English primarily because its my mother language and it's what i feel most at home and comfortable with. Just my personal preference both are great choices depending on the person and neither should be stigmatised by the other.
im norway/somali, i wish i could 4 language, wich be japanese. I know english fluent so watching dub feels nice. I have problem aswell with subtitles being to fast, its a lot of beautifully animation, hints, expression, sarcasm, big moments wich can be missed if concentrated on text. if sub is released and i love the show, i watch it.
I've always been a "I'll take what I can get, unless I REALLY hate the voice" kind of person. But now as I'm an adult with my own home and a new parent, there aren't enough hours in the day and I put on shows as background noise, or to play in-between tasks, so I'm not always able to sit down and read the subs. I'd love to cause there's a lot of great anime out there that doesn't have a dub and I doubt will ever get a dub, which means I can only watch them in specific situations where I can actually chill or I can't multitask even if I wanted to.
Off the top of my head, I know the Japanese voice actor for Kambe Daisuke from Fugou Keiji: Balance Unlimited is acting in a main role for his first ever performance. But he’s also working with Mamoru Miyano who is a legend in the industry so he’s in good hands. That whole series is actually full of rookies (if I’m not mistaken the artists for the opening and closing themes are also doing an anime opening and closing for the first time too).
People have to understand I'm always watching anime English, I'm not from Japan , it works both ways how someone from Japan watches something from America translated, and I watch something from Japan translated, it's just a show.
I personally like both depending on what I'm doing. Dub if I'm drawing or working on comics, and subbed if I'm working out or just wanna chill. In my opinion my favorite dubs with just as good as subs are: Sgt frog, Nanbaka, and Baka and Test.
Dubs are important for the disabled community and so many other people. It also gives more access and helps the community grow. There’s little to no downside to it existing. It’s super important and I wish more people would see that.
Anybody thought Ishida Akira’s performance in Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was amazing? All the subtle details and nuances conveyed in his voice was just amazing,
I can't watch sub cause to me all the voice actors sound the same (since I don't speack japanese), since I'm so used to english I can tell the diffrence everyone has a different tone, and sound to their voice. so i can disinguish who is who
There's no BETTER between the two choices. It's a matter of PREFERENCE. If you aren't used to reading and watching at the same time? Watch dubbed. If you are, then watch subbed. That simple.
But some Dubbs are just GREAT. Even better than Subs. Unfortunately, it's rare I come across any modern Anime that has a better Dubbing. Though Bofuri was AMAZING and a GREAT example of what Dubs SHOULD be. Ironically the Japanese cast is more 3/5 aesthetically pleasing, while the English cast is more 5/5 aesthetically pleasing. I find analogy is to compare it to Filler: There's examples of it done right. Unfortunately most is either total garbage, or stops being awesome once it gets to Canon. Canon which is a stand in for Subs for this analogy. Though filler is a common issue for BOTH. Ugh. I hate filler.
moonhui You can't defend something just by calling it a personal preference. A lot of deviant, disgusting behavior technically qualify as "personal preferences".
Now, you gotta admit, the Beastars dub is pretty good. A couple of really well-known guys in Keith Silverstein (HxH, JoJo) as Gouhin and Ben Diskin (Hey Arnold, Codename: Kids Next Door, Digimon, JoJo, SDS) as Jack, and Lara Jill Miller (Haru) and Griffin Puatu (Louis) were great, but Jonah Scott absolutely rose to the occasion voicing Legoshi.
Honestly i usually watch both, when i want to watch something as soon as its out I watch the subs instead of waiting for the dub. But when i sit down and watch something while eating than i usually opt for the dub since i miss what characters say most of the time when i eat and watch subbed anime
Personally, I prefer Japanese voices for battle scenes and Dubs for the general interactions. I have never understood the dub hate. I have watched some of my favorite and most hated anime in sub and dub, the voices have never been an issue for me.
Are you saying that deku is his first va role? Bc he has voiced a ton of characters, maybe not protagonists but he has voiced a couple of pretty important characters for stuff
Yeah its pretty hard tbh, even tho i love Japanese sub. Its a gift and curse. Makes me want to learn the language. Love the plot, character, world. Its just the understanding all of it can be hard esp the names and fillers.
If you watch subbed or dubbed anime, you are valid. Don’t let others call you not a web for watching dub because that’s just pure gatekeeping. I personally watch dub anime. Why? I can multitask. I wanna do a craft or something a friend got me to do because I’m bored? I can listen to the anime, knowing what they are saying. I’m okay with watching sub if the dub isn’t out, but I do tend to fall asleep while watching sub. Just ask me what the plot of Toradora is and I’ll tell you that I don’t know. I fell asleep while watching it and didn’t bother rewatching it. Now switching to dub to sub or sub to dub is hard, but just try to get used to both. Sometimes I’ll watch a sub, even if there’s a dub, just for a certain voice actor(Bakugou’s VA). So watching season 1 and 2 of Haikyu(which was funny as hell) in dub then switching to sub for 3 and 4 was hard, I was able to get used to the voices. Now if you like sub more than dub. Don’t go on any social media site and hate on the voice actor. They can still see it, even if that’s tiktok. Especially for new voice actors who plays an important character but their voice is pretty good for them. If you start to hate on these new voice actors, it’ll just discourage them. You would be technically bullying them
I think theyre equal, since subs can be saying something completely different from the actual voice but it feels genuine and dubs are good if youre used to listening instead of reading, also for english speakers its reassuring
This discussion becomes even more interesting once you consider other languages: For example, I personally generally prefer to watch dubs rather than subs, but I should point out that I am German, so in most cases, I'll be watching *the German dub, not the English dub.* The German film industry can look back onto a decades long history of high-quality dubs, to the point where when I was a little kid, I honestly thought Hollywood movies were, for some reason, made in German, because in the vast majority of German dubs it is made sure that the voice matches the actor/character, that voice actors are consistent to their respective actors even over multiple franchises, and that lip movements sync perfectly. _Of course, nowadays I watch Hollywood productions in English because I don't need subs for that (but I'm not gonna learn Japanese to watch Anime)._ It should still be said that Anime dubs are typically not created by the same companies that make Hollywood dubs, and the quality can be worse _(there have been cases where I actually preferred the English dub over the German one, for example),_ but in many cases, because the talent is ultimately there, German dubs end up pretty good _(for me, personally, there have even been cases where I preferred the German voice to the original one, although the same can be said for some dubs of English cartoons)._ _What plays into the subjectivity of this is that the casting can actually make a creative difference. For animated works, voice actors are typically chosen to best represent the character to the German or overall the Western market, not necessarily to sound similar to the original VA._ What further complicates this is that with how small the German market is compared to the international one, German dubs only exist for really popular anime for the most part _(although any Netflix original anime usually gets a German dub, too)._ There are companies making and releasing dubs for animes that aren't SAO or Attack on Titan _(hyperbolically speaking),_ but these dubs can come years, even decades after the anime was originally aired, and often are only made for one season, with further seasons being added if the first one is sufficiently profitable _(which isn't always the case, meaning in some cases, a dub is just abandoned at that point)._ *Ultimately, my point is: There are a bunch of factors playing into this, and there is really no objective way of saying subs, English dubs are dubs of any other language are, in general, better.* Objectively, you can't even make this point for any individual anime, but subjectively, if you have a free choice, one option can be clearly superior or inferior to the others.
ohmygod legoshi’s dub va is jonah scott, and he is *soooooo* talented!! he also dubbed joe from sk8 the infinity, sniper mask from high-rise invasion and willy tybur from aot season 4 (which are probably not released when this video was posted) he also does youtube videos :>
I studied Japanese for nearly 7 years, can understand and read subs but Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Baccano!, FMA:B, Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Samurai Champloo, Wolf's Rain, some Studio Ghibli movies and a few more I can't quite remember. All dubs I PREFER over the subs. The English voice actors fit perfectly with the settings and have better tones and accents than the original...
I enjoy both It’s just a different feeling with sub Everyone knows that pride when you finally unlock your Mangekyō Sharingan and can now both see the subtitles and still follow what’s happening on screen
I still Stan the opinion that the only reason dubs are so hated is because nowadays subs come first so we're conditioned to view the Japanese performance as the "true" one. We get used to how characters are "supposed" to sound so when we watch the same show but with different voices we mistake something that doesn't sound like the Japanese as something that sounds worse. Obviously I am not saying there aren't times when a dub can't actually be worse either by doing occasional changes that change the meaning of critical moments or just having inferior performances, but 99% of dubs today range from good to serviceable.
Dub v Sub isn’t a war. It’s a one sided fight where Dub watchers aren’t doing anything except defending what they like and Sub watchers are praising what they love and bashing what they hate This isn’t about hating sub. It’s about hating people who just hate things
@@enigmafiresup4658 well it is, subs aren't inherently better and dubs aren't either. Even on the worst subs/dubs the other isn't objectively better, it's all opinion.
@@TheLegitMind But that's not true. An English dub is a recast of all the voice actors into their own native language. It is an adaption of the original show. You ever hear about how the book is always better then the movie. Well, that's because the movie is an adaption of already written material and has been tampered with to fit a screen. Naturally, when you have to force the plot to divert from the original text in order for things to work, what you get is a story that simply isn't as good as the original. This is the general idea. Of course there are more specific reasons for the original Japanese being better, and I'll list a few right now. -Loss of culture. When dubbed, the anime loses it's Japanese culture. It's a bunch of people speaking English in Japanese settings and places, with Japanese customs constantly in play. They are quite literally out of place. The bigger issue with this problem lies in the loss of words like "San" and "Kun" and "Chan". These are lost in the dubbed. They are very important to the actual anime because it signifies relationships between characters. The anime fumbles to tie the development together without the tells. -Rephrasing. When dubbed, the translation is heavily altered in the dub to make the English words sync with the character's lips. This is a big blow, as the dialogue between versions is completely different, and most of the time loses it's effectiveness compared to the original. This makes emotion seens have less meaning, and overall makes the narrative more shaky, as events occur in a much weaker fashion. -Worse acting in general. As you briefly heard in the video, the acting being better or worse compared to each version isn't actually a preference. Japanese voice actors in general, are better at voice acting anime then people from the west. This is because the anime culture isn't as popular and main stream, and America doesn't have specific schools for this kind of voice acting. It also helps that the Japanese are much cultured for the animes, so it's more natural. That's why really good English dub actors are rarely found, and when they are there are used over and over again for anime after anime, like with what happened with Chris Sabat. -Censorship. This is a little more minor, but dubbing companies like funimation have been known to censor certain scenes of animes to cater to younger audiences. For a narrative to be at it's best, you want to experience it at it's full effect. Censorship hinders this. Of course, there are many people who could it better then me, but the point still stands. The idea that there isn't an inherently better version is just completely false. The original with subtitles IS the better version. That doesn't mean there aren't reasons you wouldn't want to watch the dub. If you are a slow reader, (Which is probably the case with most dub watchers). If you are trying to multitask. There are reasons to go dub over sub, but that does not make it in anyway "better" or what you should recommend others to watch.
@@enigmafiresup4658 everything you’ve listed is what makes dubs better. Rephrasing makes it better to understand and funnier. The changing of culture makes it easier to understand and less weird not everyone’s a weeb who wants to be Japanese. Ghost stories a good example of the rephrasing without it the show is complete garbage. Saying the original is always better is pretty lame and an invalid argument that can’t be proven because like the previous dude stated everything you mentioned is preference. The subs for the most part do have better voice acting but it’s all worthless if I can’t understand what they’re saying and they don’t always have better voice acting. If you prefer subs that good for you but neither one is better.
Johnny stumbling into anime? The guy was the white Power Ranger! Anime stumbled into him, tripped and blessed us with his deadpan performance as Yu in the Persona 4 Animation.
I really enjoyed the casting for the sub of demon slayer; i feel like the voices fit the characters super well and reflected their personalities and their exclamations and emotions just sounded so genuine? but some of my fave seiyuu are kaji yuki my KING and mamoru miyano! they always do their roles really well
I personally don’t care when I started watching anime I would look for dubs but if I couldn’t find it I would watch it in Japanese, although I have horrible eyesight so I tend to stick to dubs most of the time. So if there’s an anime coming out and it’s announced that it’s going to get a dub in a few months I’ll just wait. I’ve also got my little brother into anime through Naruto and My Hero and he doesn’t like to read he also has bad eyesight so he just watches dubs.
Im aware i dont have the best opinions or taste but i like the dragon ball z japanese voices, but for anime like fire force the roles are filled with such good english voice actors that are not only talented but understanding of the source material that make dubs very enjoyable
I think another issue is that direction doesn't seem to be as analytical. There's also that absurd stress of matching lip flaps, which are lip flaps for the sole reason of not needing to be matched, and japanese dubs don't even try as hard to match em.
In the late 90s/early 00s, a lot of dubs did have issues, which was less because of the VAs and more because of the dubbing studios. Then there's the issue with having to wait a good year later for the dubs, etc. Since 2010 though, that hasn't been the case as the quality and voice acting has vastly improved, the dubbing companies have remain faithful to the original art and series, and most importantly, dubs now tend to come out around the same day to week the sub was released, which means waiting is no longer an issue. So in the end, watch what you enjoy, because who cares.
To me, when I heard a lot of the voices from Dubs from some clip on youtube, I prefer it. HOWEVER regardless of your feelings on Dubs, I WILL agree 100% that Dubs have improved in terms of not having to wait for a later release. Also for them to NOT be so censored (Sailor Moon with your Kissing "Cousins" I'm looking at you!"). An regardless of objectively being better....what watch makes you happy. I also recognize some people don't have the reading speed or ability to sit an read subs due to things like ADD or Dyslexia. Hell some Dubs I genuinely enjoyed better, like Bofuri. Do what makes you happy, but for BOTH sides (Subs AND Dubs) don't assume that the quality is 100% better 100% of the time. There are some GREAT Dubs, there are some crappy Subs.
An example of an insanely talented VA is Kaguya's VA. It was one of her first role and the first prominent role....and that blew me away
First main role, she voiced in like 2-3 things as a side character I think
I actually didn't know that, that's insane
She (Koga Aoi) had plenty of roles before, much more than 2 or 3, but Kaguya is her first major role and she is relatively inexperienced compared to most lead voices. Still, she has at least 20 roles listed on myanimelist alone. I wouldn't call that "one of her first roles."

Yosakusan I watch a lot of anime with her but we watch a lot of anime separately too
I think Connor nail it on the head. In Japan they have schools specifically for voice acting while in the west they just have acting school.
Yeah and i think a few English voice actors do have lessons on becoming VA but it is mainly acting school
and you'd think it'd be enough to shut down any argument in favor of dubs, but no.

#1 Sure, the Japanese gets the handicap that we don't get what they are actually saying.

In fact I'd say it's downright CRINGY:
ruclips.net/video/wuvzfW62DVc/видео.html
Pretty much this. It becomes jarring when the voices change. Even with English dubs when there are voice acting changes it can become awkward for listeners and they'll have to go through an adjustment period before they become accustomed to the new voice.
One more factor is maybe because Japanese voice acting was shaped for anime, that's why Japanese language in anime differs from the actual Japanese language.
Just like when Garnt said that learning Japanese from anime wasn't a good thing.
Yeah a lot of dubs make the anime sound like a western action movie or a comedy when it shouldn't be any of those
Or it is because we dont understand Japanese so it seems well kind of like those people with fake Russian accent they sound good to us but to people from eastern Europe it sounds like gibberish
Tenchi Muyo sounded different, but just as good as the subs. s-CRY-ed Dub was well done and matched the Japanese well. etc.
It's like FILLER:
We KNOW Filler cna be good, REALLY good.

The only dubs I find to sometimes match the japanese quality and being overall good are the older latinamerican spanish ones from the 90's and 2000's (newer ones have sadly lost quality), they knew how to deliver proper emotion and tone.
Reanimator cristina vee always does a good job
while many English dubs match the tone of Japanese VA, often the dialogue feels flat and without much emotions. For Dub you may get great acting, but sub it's almost guarantee a great performance.
Go check out the New Year Seiyu Special, where you see VA doing live performance on roles like :
Ristarte, Edward Elric, Naruto, Kaguya, Gilgamesh
Sometimes the material just can't translate into English. Like Dio saying MUDA in Dub. For Gintama, how do you even translate the jokes or even find another actor to play Gintoki as perfect as Sugita Tomokazu
Although I prefer Sub, some Dub is fine to watch, Ranma 1/2 in dub and it's quite good
I think Black Lagoon probably fit the story more to have Dub, since they curse a lot in the show, but for Japanese there's no such straight "fuck you" word
It's a lot easier to not recognize a performance being cringey or poorly acted when you don't speak the language or hear it in a real life setting.

I agree , shows I never wanna see dubbed are Gintama and the monogatari series, you just CAN‘T
@@morganmiller41 That is very true. Crunchyroll even has "translator's notes" to explain much of the humor in Gintama to a Western audience.

I mean hopefully the Japanese actors would need to match lip flaps and emotional beats too right?
@@TheHappyZappy sure but regardless, the biggest factor is translations for scripts
@@subhankarbaral9236 you made that up. almost all japanese cartoons are animated before they are recorded. only a few anime animate to their voices
My reasoning is
@@Gemnist98 well ya learn something new everyday

I also can't stand tsundere voices in japanese. Another critique I have of Japanese voice acting is how similar many voice actresses sound in some occasions (makes sense since it's Japan).

The German film industry can look back onto a decades long history of high-quality dubs, to the point where when I was a little kid, I honestly thought Hollywood movies were, for some reason, made in German, because in the vast majority of German dubs it is made sure that the voice matches the actor/character, that voice actors are consistent to their respective actors even over multiple franchises, and that lip movements sync perfectly.
_Of course, nowadays I watch Hollywood productions in English because I don't need subs for that (but I'm not gonna learn Japanese to watch Anime)._
It should still be said that Anime dubs are typically not created by the same companies that make Hollywood dubs, and the quality can be worse _(there have been cases where I actually preferred the English dub over the German one, for example),_ but in many cases, because the talent is ultimately there, German dubs end up pretty good _(for me, personally, there have even been cases where I preferred the German voice to the original one, although the same can be said for some dubs of English cartoons)._
_What plays into the subjectivity of this is that the casting can actually make a creative difference. For animated works, voice actors are typically chosen to best represent the character to the German or overall the Western market, not necessarily to sound similar to the original VA._
What further complicates this is that with how small the German market is compared to the international one, German dubs only exist for really popular anime for the most part _(although any Netflix original anime usually gets a German dub, too)._ There are companies making and releasing dubs for animes that aren't SAO or Attack on Titan _(hyperbolically speaking),_ but these dubs can come years, even decades after the anime was originally aired, and often are only made for one season, with further seasons being added if the first one is sufficiently profitable _(which isn't always the case, meaning in some cases, a dub is just abandoned at that point)._
*Ultimately, my point is: There are a bunch of factors playing into this, and there is really no objective way of saying subs, English dubs are dubs of any other language are, in general, better.*
Objectively, you can't even make this point for any individual anime, but subjectively, if you have a free choice, one option can be clearly superior or inferior to the others.
ohmygod legoshi’s dub va is jonah scott, and he is *soooooo* talented!!
he also dubbed joe from sk8 the infinity, sniper mask from high-rise invasion and willy tybur from aot season 4 (which are probably not released when this video was posted)
he also does youtube videos :>
I studied Japanese for nearly 7 years, can understand and read subs but Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Baccano!, FMA:B, Death Note, Ghost in the Shell, Samurai Champloo, Wolf's Rain, some Studio Ghibli movies and a few more I can't quite remember. All dubs I PREFER over the subs. The English voice actors fit perfectly with the settings and have better tones and accents than the original...
You studied nothing 😂
I enjoy both
It’s just a different feeling with sub
Everyone knows that pride when you finally unlock your Mangekyō Sharingan and can now both see the subtitles and still follow what’s happening on screen
But the real Mangekyo sharingan would be to hear the Japanese dialogue and understand it without looking at the subtitles
The VA for Freya in Redo of healer was insane. It was her first role character. Which was insane for me
WHERE CAN I GET THAT JOJO T-SHIRT??
Dub v Sub isn’t a war. It’s a one sided fight where Dub watchers aren’t doing anything except defending what they like and Sub watchers are praising what they love and bashing what they hate
This isn’t about hating sub. It’s about hating people who just hate things
No, it’s preference, I watch both, however I prefer dub
It really isn't.
@@notaeryk 5 or 10 minutes
Usually I think subs are better but dubs can definitely be better then subs
Johnny stumbling into anime? The guy was the white Power Ranger! Anime stumbled into him, tripped and blessed us with his deadpan performance as Yu in the Persona 4 Animation.
I really enjoyed the casting for the sub of demon slayer; i feel like the voices fit the characters super well and reflected their personalities and their exclamations and emotions just sounded so genuine? but some of my fave seiyuu are kaji yuki my KING and mamoru miyano! they always do their roles really well
Dub will always be for me. Love it
I personally don’t care when I started watching anime I would look for dubs but if I couldn’t find it I would watch it in Japanese, although I have horrible eyesight so I tend to stick to dubs most of the time. So if there’s an anime coming out and it’s announced that it’s going to get a dub in a few months I’ll just wait. I’ve also got my little brother into anime through Naruto and My Hero and he doesn’t like to read he also has bad eyesight so he just watches dubs.
Dubs were probably made for reasons like that in the first place so it's ok
The animes that keeps me watching bot Dub and Sub are Aot, Deathnote, Naruto, Fmab, MHA
Im aware i dont have the best opinions or taste but i like the dragon ball z japanese voices, but for anime like fire force the roles are filled with such good english voice actors that are not only talented but understanding of the source material that make dubs very enjoyable
come on guys... cant we all just be friends?
Short Answer: Yes
Long Answer: Absolutely Yes
It depends
Correct Answer: No
@@OniLordMiki Incorrect. Do the research. Facts aren't on the side of dub.
Honestly I don't care but if I start an anime with subs (or dubs) and i'm like 3 episodes in, I absolutely CANNOT switch.
Speaking of JoJo, the English dub is phenomenal. They kill it in every part. The stand-out performance is D.C. Douglas as Yoshikage Kira.
DIO and kiras voice in the dub are absolutely amazing
Lmao you actually watched jojo's in dub? Wtf
Yeah fr the accents made it stand out and infinitely superior to the sub but the accents disappeared after part 2 which was a bummer
@@N0purpose Why do you think it's something to be ridiculed?
@@theobuniel9643 jojo is one of those anime that you need to watch in japanese
