As a Brit, the only natural disaster I can think of in the UK is flooding. Even then, the flooding is relatively low compared to other countries (unless you literally live next to a river or lake when it’s raining a lot then it does get a bit high). So the UK is very safe natural disaster wise and I had yet to experience a major natural disaster in my life. The interesting thing is that there has been earthquakes in the UK despite being no where near a major fault line. As expected, the earthquakes relatively low on the Richter Scale (highest being round 4.0 once in a long while) so it’s pretty much nothing compared to Japan and many other countries.
Mh, the strongest Earthquake we have had in Denmark in recent times were just strong enough to knock a few pictures off the wall. I felt nothing though, I was still in bed. 🤣
That elevator story is a lot less scary when you realize how many redundant safety mechanisms modern elevators have. They're almost to the point where the only way for them to fall is for the building they're in to fall down around them first. How screwed people are when stuck in one at a higher floor during a disaster without food and water is another concern though.
I live in LA and was there at anime expo. All I said when it happened was "oh it's an earthquake." I remember a guy screaming to get out of the building like we were all going to die right there, good times.

Thankfully it was a false alarm, but if it was real, we wouldn't have made it to a bomb shelter anyway, so might as well go out eating food.
Lol yeah when I think of that situation I remember how people in Hawaii were super chill about it. A video that i think went kinda viral because someone took a video of people outside from a window or doorway and it showed people not running but walking to the building the person filming was in (think it was some sort of official shelter for it). Not in any hurry like walking fast no just leisurely strolling, not any rush at all! No one panicking or any sort of fear. If u didn't know the context of what was happening you'd never know of the extreme and crazy danger it was thought that was happening. Lol Everybody that reported or saw that video was making jokes and comments like damn Hawaiians really are just always relaxed and chill, even when they're told they're in *DANGER OF A MISSILE!*
connor and the nugget incident reminds of that one time when an earthquake hit while i was eating my lunch and i was like "do i finish eating my lunch then get out of the house or do i just go out rn"
6:40 Japanese sky scrapers or any big buildings are made to jiggle a bit when the earthquakes hit so I can absorb the shock. If they were rock solid, they crumble apparently.
Functioning skyscrapers actually have "wiggle" room in order to make sure that it can redistribute the forces caused by winds, earthquakes and other causes. If it was entirely rigid, it would spell serious trouble
I've experienced a couple of earthquakes in my life (in Sweden of all places) and one of them was pretty big, a 5 if I recall correctly. Somewhere around there at least. I was playing Diablo 3 and the ground just started roaring, the windows were shaking like crazy, the dogs were barking. This was the first earthquake I ever experienced, yet I just wrote "oh, I think there's an earthquake here" in the general chat, then walked out to make sure the dogs were fine. After it settled down, took a few minutes, I just went back, replied to the people who had written and said "yep, earthquake, wonder when we can read about it in the news." It was a peculiar experience, yet it didn't really bother me at all. The second earthquake was just a 2, so I honestly just thought there were some heavy machinery driving past. I didn't even look out to check, but a friend wrote "did you feel that earthquake?" which told me that it was one.
Buildings are absolutely designed to sway and shake in earthquakes. Some have little dampers too (things to stop them moving too much). They used to design buildings not to sway in earthquakes. So instead they would crack and collapse in on themselves :)
The nugget story reminded me of my own first earthquake experience. I was sleeping on the ground and It suddenly felt like my head was on a wave. It kept on going up and down. Then everyone started screaming 'earthquake'. I looked at my clothes and oh...they were terrible. In the midst of cracked walls and an ongoing earthquake, I decided to change my clothes. In the end we didn't leave the building and I just went back to sleep.
I remember on the 2010 earthquake here in Chile, i was sleeping like a baby, my sister wakes me and takes me out of my bed and at the same time i get out of bed the windows next to me broke. that was an interesting experience
Once there was a an earthquake and I was at my school. The whole school was wasn't evacuating. Meanwhile, I was just sitting, chilling, and playing with my rubix cube.
There's voice recognition in RUclips that scans for spoken words that allow the videos to be demonitized, so I wouldn't be surprised if the recommendation of ads would use that as well.

Conner does not give a care about life and there he goes holding his nuggets and sauce just eating without a care in the world while everybody is screaming and panicking about the magnitude 8 earthquake
My earthquake experience was really uneventful. Texas rarely ever has earthquakes and if they happen they’re really small so the only time where I felt an earthquake it was early in the morning and I was in bed and I felt the room shaking and the pictures on the wall of my bedroom as well. I just thought “huh so this is an earthquake” and I went back to sleep
I remember having a massive earthquake in my city where rooftop pools are spilling water everywhere. But I was so focused on watching anime while lying on my bed that I didn't even feel it.
If they were newer buildings in either Los Angeles or San Francisco, they looked like they were swaying together because the buildings foundation has rollers in it. So in the event of a major earthquake instead of the building toppling and crumbling it rolls with the motion of the ground. I've grown up in San Francisco and just outside of the city, so we had earthquake drills almost every month on what to do if you ever were caught in a building or in your home during an earthquake. So much fun lol
I was working in the Dealer's Room for the first one. Second one, I didn't even know it happened. I'm not used to earthquakes and managed to completely shrug it off. It wasn't until we heard from customers that there was an earthquake that we realized we just stood through it unbothered.
in Peru, my school had earthquake alarms and drills, my first earthquake was after we return from a school trip and we all heard the alarm, before that I felt weird and thought I was feeling sick, when we heard it a lot of us ran towards the street but the guard stop us and old us to go to the basketball court since it was an open area and stay in the middle, it was the safest since there wasn't anything around beside basketball hoops and there was several courts so it was pretty spacious, it lasted for a minute and it wasn't so strong, but it was quiet scary, even if we had drills, I live in HK now and the only natural disasters I experience are typhoons, which are equally scary since winds can blow you away depending of the magnitude of it, but ofcourse earthquakes are scarier too, hope to not get one ever in Hong Kong..
Fun fact: big part of why the U.S. has the 2nd Amendment (besides the obvious) was settlers needed to be armed because America was so wild & dangerous, to the point where some states gave settlers free guns on arrival.
I was at the love live concert at AX and I had so much adrenaline I dident even notice a earthquake was happening. The girls ran offstage and the announcer said we are taking a break due to the earthquake and I was confused. I looked up and all the lights were still shaking.
I once read an article that Japan was experiencing its worst heat wave of 104. Laughable compared to Houston weather! Our heat is the worst of its kind! It’s so humid, I drink when i breathe.
Ah man, AX 2019 is literally memorable for those quakes. I remember the first one, I thought I was just dizzy while in the massive line to get in, but then everyone started looking at each other and going --- oh, its a earthquake. The second one though was amusing to me, since I was in the board game section of AX in the middle of Hall A - I just sat on my seat, looking up at the ceiling and just seeing the light lamps swaying heavily. At least I wanted to know if these lights were gonna snap off, I knew which direction to go to get out of the way (or decide quickly to duck under the cheap folding table.) Once it was over, everyone went back to business as usual, LOL. Poor Aqours though -- the second quake happened in the middle of their Day 1 concert at The Novo and the staff had to stop the concert to check the building over for damage. I believe most people said they didn't even notice there was a earthquake.
From a Californian, I felt the quake and tbh I did not notice the first one because I was in a theatre and I was watching that one trippy scene in the second new Spiderman movie so I thought that it was the bass and was surprised at the immersive experience. Some people looked around but no one left the room when it happened. I knew it happened because of news coverage and the second one knocked down a tree near my place. Also, all buildings in California have like wheels or these wheel like mechanisms that makes it so that the whole building moves with the quake and not against it which means that they won't like tip over or take too much damage even though it is very alarming.
As a LA born resident I now remember the earthquake of AX 2019 and thought nothing of it. I didn't even remember it happening until watching this. I was even one of the only people around me to notice it happening at the time

Like, ayo get tf out of the way lmao.
I was there for that anime expo. That year was a really bad one for earthquakes. I was in one in utah, idaho, and then LA for the expo. So I'd already found my fear of earthquakes at this point. Flash forward and a friend and I had decided to go get ramen that night. We are sitting there and all the sudden that second earthquake started. I'm sitting there having a small panic attack and everyone else is going about there meal like nothing was happening. Litterally to the point that one of the staff had to yell earthquake to get people to pay attention to the the ground underneath them. Still one of the weirdest experiences I've ever had.
The first earthquake I was at LAX sitting reading on my phone and thought someone was kicking my chair, I looked up people were looking around and laughing and I didn't know it was an earthquake until I looked at twitter. The second earthquake my brother and I were at a panel in a hotel and didn't feel it, the alarm went off telling us to leave but it wasn't that bad so the panel continued didn't know how bad the earthquake was until I saw twitter.

I'm from Southern California and the only earthquake I'd consider "massive" was that Ridgecrest one that was around 6.4. Anything lower than a 5 we literally just stop got a couple minutes to let it pass then go about our day. You can tell who hasn't experienced an earthquake by the level someone freaks out
I’m from Chile and it’s always so weird when people from other countries don’t even know how different it FEELS a 4.0 earthquake to an idk 5.0
Same from Southern California. That day I was also in Ax when the earthquake hit. The thing is, I didn't feel it at all haha. When my friend mentioned the earthquake I was just confused lol.
The only earthquake I had in Southern California was when I was asleep. I don’t remember any other ones lol
@@a.u_gingk0 Yeah, I'm also from California and when that earthquake hit it was funny to see all the people who traveled in from other places get all freaked out because they weren't used to earthquakes.
I GOT AN AD FOR SPICY CHICKEN NUGGETS AS SOON AS JOEY SAID "Well we Might as well finish these nuggets before we die" LMAAOOOOOOOOO
Yeah, you get used to them.
And if you are from Chile, you are born knowing how to deal with them
what the hell is 13 magnitude scale earthquake proof buildings connor is talking about at the end, "richter" scale is from 1 to 10 and biggest earthquake in history was 9.4
Lol... i was thinking the same thing... But it's ok... He is not our science teacher at least 😂😂
Most likely he's referring to I guess 13 instances of strong earthquakes before massive repairs are needed.... maybe
@@mariakrystelannaria3733 possible but it would still make no sense, buildings are desgin to survive certain richter scale earthquakes, soo if building was desgined for 6.9 scale earthquakes theoretically all earthquakes smaller then that shouldnt be a problem
Was over here in Chile, we are as used to earthquakes and Japanese people are
@@Kamirykun yep ik, just dont know the name of that earthquake, only its magnitude
5:38 that one stair scene from FFVII
I was watching japan sinks and this notification just appeared. Suspect...
that's the anime they were talking about on the podcast
@@DreamtreeGaming Yeah lol
Im from Philippines and we always have an Earthquake drill at school every thrice in a year
I know Im a filipino
@SenzawaVirus YES MY LEGS HURTS WHENEVER WE DO THAT DRILL!!
@SenzawaVirus Yeah kinda but you will never understand.
@SenzawaVirus Yeah kinda but you will never understand.
Don’t forget the fire drills
That elevator story is a lot less scary when you realize how many redundant safety mechanisms modern elevators have. They're almost to the point where the only way for them to fall is for the building they're in to fall down around them first. How screwed people are when stuck in one at a higher floor during a disaster without food and water is another concern though.
I live in LA and was there at anime expo. All I said when it happened was "oh it's an earthquake." I remember a guy screaming to get out of the building like we were all going to die right there, good times.
4:22 Omg Connor and Nabi are just like my mom and I when we had that missile alert for Hawaii. Literally eating in mcdonalds as it happened and we legit just kept eating.
I volunteer at ax every year and I totally forgot about the earthquake that year 😅
Food focus and being used to anxiety really are stronger than anything else
Functioning skyscrapers actually have "wiggle" room in order to make sure that it can redistribute the forces caused by winds, earthquakes and other causes. If it was entirely rigid, it would spell serious trouble
9:03 13 magnitude earthquake? I didn't know we could build something to withstand continental scale destruction
The earthquake in Nepal 4 years ago was my most terrifying experience ever.I can still remember the terror of after quakes....
I was in the karaoke room when that earthquake hit Anime Expo that year. We all handled it like champs!
After it settled down, took a few minutes, I just went back, replied to the people who had written and said "yep, earthquake, wonder when we can read about it in the news."
It was a peculiar experience, yet it didn't really bother me at all.

Buildings: *swaying back and forth in sync *
Connor: Oh, that's not right.
It's REEEEAAAALLLYYY weird. Just as they talked about the Nuggets, RUclips ad was Spicy McNuggets =_=
There's voice recognition in RUclips that scans for spoken words that allow the videos to be demonitized, so I wouldn't be surprised if the recommendation of ads would use that as well.
Connor, largest earthquake in human history was 9.5. a 13 would literally be the planet tearing itself apart XD
Were i live, its way over due for a earthquake, so if and when there is one, its going to me detrimental
where do u live?
@@animetwilight75 my guess is the cascadia subduction zone
You guys have fun stories. I was also at Anime Expo during the earthquakes and I was just in the Manga Lounge reading when it happened. I was chilling.
I was never this quick to a video in my life
I remember having a massive earthquake in my city where rooftop pools are spilling water everywhere.
Me, hav been born and raised in California: *sips my coffee while listening to the guys talk about how their experience* Meh.
I was working in the Dealer's Room for the first one. Second one, I didn't even know it happened. I'm not used to earthquakes and managed to completely shrug it off. It wasn't until we heard from customers that there was an earthquake that we realized we just stood through it unbothered.
Same for he but in California and the Philippines as I just seem so out of it when they strike or just the magnitude isn’t enough to faze me
Earthquakes, hurricane, blizzards: we're gonna Fuck up everybody's day
Sink holes: we're gonna fuck up your day alone
in Peru, my school had earthquake alarms and drills, my first earthquake was after we return from a school trip and we all heard the alarm, before that I felt weird and thought I was feeling sick, when we heard it a lot of us ran towards the street but the guard stop us and old us to go to the basketball court since it was an open area and stay in the middle, it was the safest since there wasn't anything around beside basketball hoops and there was several courts so it was pretty spacious, it lasted for a minute and it wasn't so strong, but it was quiet scary, even if we had drills, I live in HK now and the only natural disasters I experience are typhoons, which are equally scary since winds can blow you away depending of the magnitude of it, but ofcourse earthquakes are scarier too, hope to not get one ever in Hong Kong..
Fun fact: big part of why the U.S. has the 2nd Amendment (besides the obvious) was settlers needed to be armed because America was so wild & dangerous, to the point where some states gave settlers free guns on arrival.
@2:56min "It was 2" shows 3 fingers LOL
Thay thumbnail though LMAO
I was at the love live concert at AX and I had so much adrenaline I dident even notice a earthquake was happening. The girls ran offstage and the announcer said we are taking a break due to the earthquake and I was confused. I looked up and all the lights were still shaking.
Everyone: AHHHHHHH EARTHQUAKE
Connor: lemme eat mah nuggies
I once read an article that Japan was experiencing its worst heat wave of 104. Laughable compared to Houston weather! Our heat is the worst of its kind! It’s so humid, I drink when i breathe.
Conor's life could literally turn into one of the best slice of life anime
I was even one of the only people around me to notice it happening at the time
Me in the U.S. but living in Oregon never experiencing more than bit of flooding ...

Conor: newer buildings are designed for 13 magnitude earthquakes
2011 japan's earthquake: 9.0 magnitude, 360 billion dollars lost in damage
While they're talking about nuggets, a McNuggets ad came up. Guess it's nugget time
I agree. Earthquakes are the most humbling experiences in life.
I remember experiencing my first earthquake, I was sleeping and woke up to it and me and my dad both came out of our rooms and went to my older brother's room cause we thought the shaking was from him getting mad at playing League of Legends.
WHEEEEEEZE-
Joey: in Australia we don’t get earthquakes
Melbourne: hold my beer
When you experience a earthquake you're one of 5 people you're either a scared crying baby dear, thriving in chaos/enjoying the ride, tranquil Buddhist monk, eating/drinking, sleeping, or you've just had a minor inconvenience
My school was next to a fault line...
my only experience with an earthquake was the ripple effect(?) bc it hit a few states below but my house shook and frames fell and i literally felt like everything was in slow motion
It must be a great feeling to be able to make Garnt laugh
Australia has earthquakes not as many as Japan but we certainly have them. Adelaide, Newcastle, Melbourne Meekatharra and so on.
I remember that earthquake. I was in a panel when the second one happened and you could tell who was from California and Japan and who was not by seeing who was panicking and who was not.
I have never had an earthquake experience in my life, and I live in new jersey. So jokes on you connor, I’m safe as well.
I was at the Studio Trigger panel in the Main Event Hall when it happened. All of the giant lights and stuff were hanging right over the Trigger staff and they kept swaying a good amount even after the quake happened. I legit was worried that they'd fall on them lol. Like, ayo get tf out of the way lmao.
Meanwhile, during that same earthquake, I was sat in my living room watching anime and I fully refused to get up
Woke up from the recent California one, then went back to sleep since I was tired lol
When you live in California and have like 4 earthquakes a day: "Huh? Was there an earthquake????"
Still one of the weirdest experiences I've ever had.
the closest thing to an earthquake in London is probably a train or bus going past and even that's like a little tremor
"Try really hard." Garnt says. Has he heard of the Great Smog of London?
Earthquake can wait but nugget can't
The first earthquake I was at LAX sitting reading on my phone and thought someone was kicking my chair, I looked up people were looking around and laughing and I didn't know it was an earthquake until I looked at twitter. The second earthquake my brother and I were at a panel in a hotel and didn't feel it, the alarm went off telling us to leave but it wasn't that bad so the panel continued didn't know how bad the earthquake was until I saw twitter.
This has to be one of my favourite clips
