I usually watch dub, but if an English dub isn’t out then I’ll watch subs. It’s not that serious, I don’t know why people freak out over how some people prefer watching anime. Each has pros and cons, so it doesn’t matter which you prefer. I tend to zone out during shows because of my ADHD, so it’s better for me to have English because that way I can still keep up with the show. Plenty subbed anime’s are amazing, and plenty dubbed anime’s are amazing. You’re not “better” than anyone because you like reading and you’re not better than anyone because you like it in English. People that argue over meaningless are braindead

Im pretty sure if someone spoke Spanish and had the option to listen to a movie in English or Spanish, which one do you think they would choose? Choosing to watch dub simply because you dont speak Japanese and dont want to be stuck constantly reading the subtitles and watch the animation (impossible btw, you end up missing some of the animation) is NOT a bad thing, and sub watchers who argue on that are just weebs🤷🏾‍♂️

I don't understand Japanese so I prefer dubbed anime. I like being able to get up get something from my fridge or cupboard and not have to pause. The only animes I tend to watch subbed are either unavailable in English or are set in Japan. Taking an easy example of both is Detective Conan/Case Closed. I grew up watching Case Closed but had to switch to subbed because it's no longer being dubbed. It's also one of the first animes I started watching in Japanese and I had to get accustomed to Japanese voices. Now, even if they dubbed it with proper Japanese names instead of westernizing the names, I would probably still prefer the Japanese.

Everytime someone says they either don't like the Japanese version of an anime or prefer to watch a foreign dub (especially if it's in English) of an anime, dub bashers always say shit like "The dub is trash!" and "The Japanese version is so much better!" They always act like the Japanese versions are superior than the dubbed versions at everything. Dubbed versions of anime get so much complaints compared to the original Japanese versions of anime. It's okay to not like anime dubs, but it's not okay to attack others for liking them.

But in the end it’s really up to you how you want to enjoy anime.

people have to understand that many people cant read in time due to inability and whatnot so they rely on dubs to get into anime or else they just do not enjoy the anime medium, also some anime sound a lot better in dub and others in sub if you are into this sort of thing, some people want to watch in sub but cant because they dont understand as said above and so they usually first watch in dub then they rewatch in sub depending on the type of anime.

@@Vloshry Yea and usually people who want to watch a show that is not dubbed yet and have dyslexia or similar they usually just read the manga since Anime is fast paced compared to a book and when trying to catch up with the subs it makes it difficult to follow the visuals, so they rather just read at their own pace.
Now imagine an anime like Fate or anything that has any action in it... it is going to be impossible to follow what's going on.
People might say that Dyslexia is uncommon but given the statistics... only in America its around 15% of the population that have this (not including other reading difficulties).
For Japanese this is no problem because in Japan they prefer text-based mediums such as manga due to them being cheap and easy to understand the information, it is because their language is mainly pictorial and people are less likely to read slowly. There are of course people who simply do not like the Japanese language and skip anime altogether.
Dyslexia varies from language to language and typically Asian countries have less of an issue and possibly why they prefer their native rather than English.
Anyway, sub or dub depends clearly on the studio most heavily if people have no problems reading fast-enough, for example for dubs I (and many others) have issues with Index from A Certain Magical Index, she sounds so high-pitched that it breaks the barrier of annoying and some people agree, some dont (I guess they listen through a tube instead of actual headset or speakers, anyways), its because they tried to make her sound cute that it ended up a mess and most of the times this studio has dubbed many more series and each time they use that person as a voice actor (they have other bad voice actors too) they kind of mess-up with the series, its like a stigma, now if you have no choices and cant watch subs then thats kind of a bitter pill to swallow. Funny thing is that we leave feedback at their page and they still keep on doing the same mistakes. I think they can easily fix these problems. Now that we have digital distribution and streaming services they can easily fund a proper voice acting campaign and start getting anime over to the west on a more professional level, something that will overall make them more money.
to conclude, its hard to find a good balance mostly because of the cultural differences, I also agree that in DBZ you just cant watch it in Japanese, Naruto for example you can and it fits the overall theme regardless.
Its also hard to understand the jokes for most people due to the cultural differences as well, comedy anime just look silly or weird to westerners, in which case the most funny anime over here could be konosuba due to how it literally translates well to westerners (sexual jokes and such) which is typical for American culture, in japan these things are considered weird respectively, people dont kiss at their teens or anything like that and its actually a very strict country to its citizens compared to the west. People cant even drink or go to certain places of the city if under the adult age and there is surveillance. This of course causes pressure to the young people and thus... Anime was born, there is an old documentary about how Japan has a decline of on their birthrate because males tend to have waifus, the conclusion was that this is due to the extreme pressure put on people and the expectations of females in that culture from males. Women would rarely date men who were incompetent because the cultural standard is to graduate and find a well-paying job. If someone has found their Ikigai (job and passion type of thing) then they can probably make it but if they are still searching this can put pressure on them. Japan probably has already addressed this but its a good headsup.
If you are into psychology then Anime would be the expression of the Shadow Self of Japan, thats why its so different from what Japan is actually like (with few exceptions of course).

Well done! I don't speak a word of Japanese I didn't learn from watching anime, so I prefer dubs cuz I can focus on what is going on onscreen without the distraction of trying to chase the dialogue across the bottom of the screen. I get super lost really quick, esp. when they get talking really fast. Also, it's easier to watch anime with non-anime fans or with people who have a hard time with subtitles, but really enjoy the art work & stories in anime, like my 63 year old Mom. On the flip side, I'd really like to see dubbed anime really try its best to match the English voice actors with the original voice actors, instead of just casting just anybody cuz they speak English. Nothing ruins a dub for me like a voice actor that doesn't "match" the character's personality. THIS seems much more "fake" than just the act of putting English words in a character's mouth. But that's just my 2 cents worth!

I just don’t like it when people have to watch anime one way or the other regardless of the anime and it’s respective dub. The debate is probably so fierce because people want their first watch to be the most quality. People don’t want to miss out on something they would experience in sub or dub and people have their reasons for thinking one aspect is always better than the other.

Also, the company that is dubbing the show might make BIG changes to the dialogue (Like Aggretsuko) However, their are some pretty good dubs out their! I think it just depends on what you can understand the story better on, and which voices sound more heart-felt

I always prefer subs for live action films and dubs for anime
I don’t watch a whole lot of anime but the ones I’ve seen the dubs seem well done and match the characters and their lip movements well enough. I watch Sub when the dub isn’t available but I still prefer to watch the dub as it’s easier for me to understand the emotions the characters have in their voice and I can tell who is talking sense I don’t speak Japanese a lot of the actors just sound the same to me I can tell a few apart but most of the time I don’t know who is talking when it’s not showing the face (this goes for any foreign language not just Japanese). Also sometimes the text goes way to fast so then I’ll have to rewind to read what they said cause I just have to read every line or else it will bug me for the rest of the episode and I hate when there’s text on the top and bottom of the screen. I also hate having to pause the show when I get up instead of just listening to it when I’m getting a snack.
To me Japanese voices don’t match really over exaggerated big muscle looking men and I preferred the voice for Overlord in English than the Japanese as again to me it fit the character design more.
Anyway those are some of the reasons why I prefer to watch anime in dubs but I don’t care what people prefer and I don’t mind watching subs when I have to.
As for live action the reason I prefer dubs is it’s harder to have the dub match a real person look organic and the acting I tend to find to be awful and not fitting. Really it’s just the exact opposite of anime’s for me.

I understand why some ppl choose subs: it is closer to the original and why ppl choose dubs:
    It is easier to follow
All thats understandable, i just dont get why people have to argue about it and say that the other is wrong but that is just the anime community i guess from outside looking in by a cassual anime watcher.

I watched and play anime, foreign shows and games dubbed all the time. Exceptions being if they don't offered dubbed or the dub is long incomplete and subs the only way to finished the series up. Sure I might be used to characters sounding one way beforehand that I get thrown off (Goku's a perfect example for this), but that won't stop me. Reason I watched dub is that sometimes subtitles disappear before I'm even done reading or when I both trying to understand what's happening while I look away doing something else like playing on my Switch or surfing the web. Preferring sub or dub is one thing, but having screaming matches and calling each other "uncultured" is playing messed up. This is why a good number of theatrical anime movies in America offered a dubbed or subbed version to watch and the same goes to Disney, Dreamworks or Pixar movies in Japan. Basically any movie or series that is foreign to one country they offer options for purists with the original voice cast or for casuals or people who prefer to listen to dialogue rather than listen to text in dubbed. There's no right or wrong way to watch anime. All comes down to preference at the end of the day. Hell, there's even original creators of series in Japan that handpicked English actors for dubs. The creator of Cutie Honey, Go Nagai handpicked Jessica Calvello to voice Honey Kisaragi/Cutie Honey Herself in New Cutie Honey. I have no idea where people got "Dub goes against original creator's/studio's vision" from.

@@Vloshry Thanks! I always felt like this dub vs. sub drama is chaotic and out of hand and good thing I'm not the only one who feels that way. The sub only people love to discredit the dub actors. They are just doing their job. Giving out their voices to a handful of these iconic characters. I just feel like dub is more accessible for me. I wouldn't complain about watching a series in Japanese if I don't multitask or know Japanese which honestly won't be worth it for me to use Babble or Duolingo just to enjoy a couple series. Sometimes with dubs you get cleaner audio for some series. Dragon Ball Z was only mono in it's Japanese original audio, but upgraded to 2.0 and even 5.1 in a handful of DVD and Blu-Ray releases. My favorite audio track from the Blu-Rays is with the Bruce Faulconer. Probably because those dubs were made in the 90s or 2000s where they got more capable equipment. I just do not like the mono Japanese for DBZ because it's sounds so muffled. If I want to watch sometimes with muffled audio then I would either watch RUclips videos from 2006 - 2013-ish or vintage cartoons like Popeye or Tom & Jerry.

I literally go by what it SOUNDS like. I prefer Dub because I want to watch an anime and listen with my native language (also, there are different inflections, meanings, intonations, etc for each language which can convey the story SO differently from one to another), and there are a couple of voice actors who I follow to their various works (Johnny Yong Bosch and Ernesto Jason Liebrecht), but because I go primarily by sound, there are some that I like in Japanese and some I prefer in English purely based on that. For instance, I did not like the chaos of Japanese DBZ when I tried it (I grew up on DBZ on my TV so I was exposed to the dub, first) so I stick with the DBZ-dub. Because of my favourite two voice actors, I will always prioritize Dub so I can hear THEM. Naruto I first watched in Japanese because the dub wasn't available at the time. I tried the dub a few years after that and didn't like the sound of Naruto's voice actor, and the inflections of English in general just didn't feel as 'authentic' for a traditional ninja-style story as Japanese did. It's also a vibe based on your personal preferences. Also in the English, Naruto says "Believe it!" a LOT and that phrase alone is annoying and not something that English-speakers say very often, let alone as often as he does. I guess it's the English version of dattebayo? Which I LOVE. Dattebayo is so intrinsically Naruto himself and it's got a funny, quirky sound to it.
Anyway, VERY enjoyable video and all your points are reasonable. Thanks a lot. :D
