Dear Doctor, thank you for the great explanation. After listening to it I am left with a concern though: on one hand you explain that poor muscularity around the knee favours cartilage damage but on the other hand you clearly discourage squatting. Therefore, how can one increase muscle mass around the knee then ? This looks like squaring the circle...
Wall squats and single leg wall squats. With lunges back, front, step up and down. Heal rise. Cycle, swim... So many way to increase strength. Both legs I had ligament tore with meniscus tear. Now muscles have built around it and able to walk 3km easily up or down hill. Still can't run.
I hate to say it but some of this of this is silly. I am a crossfit athlete and it is common knowledge that if you squat, even squatting heavy, with proper form, slowly progression, and no pain, your knees will be super healthy. There are athletes in my gym in their 60s-70s and have some of the healthiest knees. Squatting is okay and encouraged, but in the right way.
Squat with proper form is good for your legs. A proper squat does not require knee movement at all just your thighs and glutes. If you do squats pls watch videos on RUclips and learn proper form.
