There's a recent short video on the "Evermore: Eden Restored" yt channel titled "Japanese Beetles-Traps-FREE Chicken Food". He rigged a Japanese Beetle trap to the outside fence of his chicken enclosure, about 4 (?) feet off the ground. Cut the bottom of the trap bag open and taped/rigged it to a plastic funnel, with a PVC pipe/tube going out the end of the funnel down to a few inches off the ground inside the chicken coop/enclosure. Had a bowl of water under the PVC pipe, at the bottom of it, and the video shows the chickens around the bowl of water, and as soon as a Japanese Beetle falls down the PVC pipe into the water, they peck it out! Ingenious way of attracting the Japanese Beetles and directly giving them to the chickens to eat!! Very clever and very easy.

To everyone getting their knickers in a twist because we gave the chickens coffee and chocolate crickets, please just calm down. They got a few handfuls of bugs with a tiny amount of coffee and chocolate on them. No chickens had heart attacks from chocolate caffeinated crickets. If you don't believe me then please by all means read this.
Per the study, the lowest dose found to be toxic (but not immediately fatal) to chickens was 66 mg of theobromine per kilogram of body weight.
The average weight of an adult standard breed chicken is 8 pounds, or about 3.5 kilograms. At 3.5 kilograms, a chicken would need to eat about 240 mg theobromine for chocolate toxicity.
In order to ingest 240 mg theobromine, a single chicken would need to consume just ONE of the following:
2.5 tablespoons of Hershey’s Cocoa Powder
Almost 4 Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars
7 pieces of Hershey’s Bliss dark chocolate
12 pieces Hershey’s Kisses Special Dark Mildly Sweet Chocolates
    32 Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Kisses
As you can see, a single chicken would need to eat quite a bit of chocolate in order to reach the toxic threshold. So, while chocolate should be avoided completely, a small amount should not be dangerous or cause for concern.

I live in a subdivision and I am allowed to have chickens so I have 6 little laying Hens. And 7 raised gardens in my backyard. And flower gardens in the front and backyard. I would love to have a small Orchard in my sideyard but the rising cost of water has put a damper on all of my plans, although I did manage to plant an apple tree out front a couple of years ago. Its doing well.. :) .. You have a lovely family and it's fun to see all the goings on with your homestead.

Get some barrels and collect rain water from your roof gutters to water garden and fruit trees. There are kits available to tap into the downspouts to fill barrels with rain water. Mulching heavily with wood chips, grass clippings, chop & drop or chop & shred comfrey, kale leaves, tree leaves, straw, etc around fruit trees will hold a lot of moisture in the ground decreasing the need to water as often. Can also drill 1” holes in the bottom & sides of 5 gallon buckets, bury in the soil up to the rim so you can get the lid on and off and you can compost in them. It really helps bring in earth worms, builds soil fertility and soil biology which helps soil to hold moisture a lot longer. I have them in areas of terrible soil, fill bucket up, wet contents, put on lid and check on them every few days at first then every 2 weeks or so. Works real well for winter composting too and gives soil life food to eat after most annual plants roots have died back.

One dish that might be considered an acquired taste, is that of the Mopane Worm, the green and blue spiky caterpillar of the nocturnal Emperor Moth. It looks very pretty on the butterfly-leafed Mopane Tree, but loses some of its appeal once its innards have been squeezed out, and it has been boiled and sun dried, then re-hydrated when needed. Many dishes are made by Mopane Worms in Southern Africa.

Those traps are great, except you have to shake the dead flies back out that ting hole. I cut mine up one side from metal ring to metal ring & taped it closed with a piece of scotch tape vertically. Then when full of dead flues, I just untape it like a zipper & dump the flues out for yummy chicken treats.
