My nephew Terry lived on an abandoned ranch in south AZ and raised goats. He tells an interesting story about his goats. When he milked them, they each waited their turn until he called the goat's name when it would come to the milking station and mount it to be milked and receive a bit of feed from a bucket. On one occasion a goat gave only a small amount of milk and Terry was complaining to the goat, calling it by name, that the amount of milk was not worth the amount of feed that he gave it. The goat became offended and ran off into the field and would not return until Terry apologized.

My Gran on the way to school, tethered the family adult goats in the pasture with a bucket of water. The kids ran free, but since they were penned separate from the mom's over night, they stayed close by to nurse. After class, all the children would gather their goats, the stakes, the water buckets and head home for the evening. During lunch break, they would check the goats water and fill from the central well if needed. If bad enough weather came on, the kids would leave class long enough to run the goats back to the family pens. Works well until summer when they took them out to the summer ranges and all the village goats and sheep would become one big herd for the day, minded by the kids and the livestock guardian dogs.
Sheep were managed differently and my Gran immigrated before he was part of that task.

I don’t mean to keep being repetitive, but I really appreciate how y’all have the volume on the background music just right.
People have been staking out animals for many years. I do like that you are trying to keep the goats safe using the pvc pipe.
An IBC tank is another cheap way to put in a shelter for a goat - just cut a door in the plastic and in the steel frame then frame around the door with wood (put a piece and each side and screw them together so they don't cut themselves on the steel part.

We tried to tie Gertie out but she kept getting tangled up in the line. This pvc idea seems like the perfect solution to let her graze the pastures and not our garden!

I used to stake or tether my goats but you have to make sure you have turnable clips on both ends of the rope/chain (I used a light weight chain) so it doesn't twist up and also make sure they can't get caught up in anything, have water, shade etc, we made a mobile house we pulled along for them also make sure they are at least a metre or 3 feet back from anything you don't want eaten as they get down on their knees and stretch to reach things

Excellent, thank you! We are getting goats to help clear forest area around our property, but with predator pressure, I think we need fencing too. It has worked so far for our chickens. They have a garage type tent right now, while building their house, and they are a good distance from the house. So far, safe, praise the Lord.
I have a buck and nanny coming tomorrow. They are baby LaManchas. I am excited to have them for milk, meat, cheese etc. They will give us approx 2100 lbs of milk a year. Lol we will not go through that much but can also feed it out to other animals. Lol might have to have Selia teach me how to milk a goat. She has it down to an art form. I have milked a cow but never a goat. This is a new adventure for me. I do not plan on breeding her this year but next year. These goats also do not have to be freshened for 1 to 2 years or longer. A plus. I was wondering how I was going to stake them out for grazing until I get fencing up. I have dog kenels set up for them right now but will be building them a small barn to put them in at night. We have predators that would love a goat snack. Ie Bobcats, mountain lions, bears, fox etc. So I have to keep them locked up at night.

Goats are cool
Your goats look so healthy and happy. Great idea to stake them. We had a pet goat we called "Pepsi" as she loved Pepsi pop. She was a funny little goat always up to mischief and shenanigans with the horses. She was a great friend to the horses. I believe she thought she was one to. My mother had a pet goat as a child when she lived in England. She harnessed the goat up to a cart and went everywhere with it. She loved her goat and "Treacle" loved her back. He was protective of her especially around dogs. Her goat was her bicycle. The story she would tell about her pet goat made us laugh so hard when we were children. Have fun with your goats and I must say, they look wonderful. You take very good care of them. :)

I like your idea about the pcv tube for preventing the goats from getting tangled and hurting themselves. Also, your "chicken tractor" idea is so cool! I look forward to learning as quickly as possible with everything going on in our crazy world. We are getting a very late start, and I hope we are able to do as well as you and your family. I drive a T post in the ground and put a piece of 1-1/2 pvc about a foot long over post and slide it to the bottom and tie a lead to that and they eat in a circle so they dont get into the things you dont want ...I have 3 goats with like 20 statically placed posts they keep most of the yard nice and short and keep the trees trimmed up of the ground to about 6ft as well....they also fertilize as they eat...ohh and dog chain works the best it does not get knotted up over time like the cable
My family had goats when I was a kid . We loved them . They have so much personality. Very mischievous but tons of fun for us kids anyway.

Hey brother just watched the chicken tragedy after this one. It’s hard to loose animals. Maybe while you’re building the new tractors consider putting roosts right on top of the bottom board. Meat birds don’t fly up to roosts but mine sleep every night on my roosts. I have three in each 5x10 tractor and run 25 birds in each. Hey I’ll shoot a vid and put up on my channel if that would help. ?
you can always invest in some timeless fencing for your goat pen and then use the movable electric netting to move and browse your goats in other areas around your homestead. or maybe make use of that Gallagher Electric Fencing to move the goats around?

I'd go ahead and do the PVC pipe all the way down. I say this because I used the cables to tie out mine and I lost one of them due to him strangling himself with the cable.

Just found your videos good stuff sorry bout the chickens I have goats too mine are just for clean up don't like meat never tried the milk but they definitely have beautiful eye's and my place is very clean
I had some stakes made of half inch rod with ring welded about 2 inches from the top with a u bolt slipped over the rod and a piece of round flat welded on top, the other end sharpened. Clip a dog chain to the u bolt after you hammer the post into the ground. Never had a problem

My neighbor made that. I never had goat before. She had me try it. She had it over rice. It was w/curry (which I love). It was delicious and so tender. I thought it would be strong tasting. Not at all. It was like the most tender beef. I have to say it’s one of my favorite now! 👍
Yeah I didn’t get to look at that video with all the dead chickens as your intro.. But I would’ve took all those chickens and put them under my plants and I was gonna be growing like fruit trees and put them under things you’re gonna be needing produce the fruit with… but I’m sure you figured out what to do you seem to be able to make it through everything…. Which is a good thing but like I say with all the animals we have a wife that at the live on a farm you’re gonna have a lot of give-and-take.. Hawks Koons you never know what’s gonna show up on the property at night you can have all the lights in fencing and everything it’s something or some thing is it going to get in there Or try too..
I was thinking about that kind of set up. My grandparents had goats because my uncle was allergic to Cow milk. Years layer the grass in that area was still the greenest.

Growing up, we staked out our cows. And when I had goats, I did tposts with a marine grade roap with a loop that slid over the tpostand a clip on the other end to clip to the goats halters. I'm sure from above, it looked like giant crop circles, but it worked great! Great plan! Keep up the great work

How do they know what the devils eyes look like, Collar and chains is what we used Fancy dog tie out we had rebar bent in a U pound in. PVC Pipe huh never thought of that one now I have to get some goats

That's what we do with our goats. We tie them out with welded chains and dog tie outs and let them eat the weeds. They are great at taking care of that problem. We can just use them wherever the grass is growing too long etc. We don't use the cable because they will wind it around things and pull so hard that the cable will stay bent up. We like the welded dog chain. They have never broken it yet. They have broken the other type of dog tie out chain by pulling on it over and over until it broke. Our goats would probably eat through that rope. Thanks for this Mike. This was a fun video.
