Excited to hear from you all as to how much this helps around your property! Have any of you already been doing this?

30 day update video? Thanks
I've been doing this for a couple years now and it does a great job. Mosquitos are attracted to darker objects so I used a green Menards bucket. I also put a small handful of dried leaves and grass in to get the water real nasty and further attract the mosquitos. 4 of them on my 1 acre property has made a huge difference.
😅😮😊😊😊 1:00
@@oifish : for example if you have a Swimming pool, you can place 5 gallon buckets up and put the Mosquito dunks like in the video, they will be attracted to older water??? my Brother in-law cleans the pool, but this summer there got a bit Lazy and there where already doing there Life cycle... i Hope can work putting up buckets up B4 they use the pool next summer...
I have used both these products in rainwater collection barrels, and they indeed kill mosquito larvae very effectively, but also creates a situation where, in our climate, the water sours quickly (Central TX). The solution we came up with (quite by accident) was to put live floating aquatic plants (that don’t need soil) in the water barrels, and keep the barrels in at least part sun. This created an ecosystem full of aquatic predators (mostly dragonflies and water beetles) that kept the mosquito larvae population so low as to be almost undetectable. The suite of mosquito species that occurred changed as well. More small, non-nuisance species. No more Asian Tiger Mosquitos at all. A bucket nearby with no plants (and no predators) would fill up with rain and within a week have hundreds of nuisance mosquito larvae, while the planted buckets have none. The plant species we use is Coontail, Ceratophyllum demersum, gathered from a healthy waterway. The catch is, you can’t ever let it dry out, or you will have to re-establish the system all over again
Do you use the product in conjunction with the plant ecosystem? I'm in central TX too and trying to find solutions
@@macauleywhite9407 wondering that too b/c w/o the pucks it would be a more natural solution, hopefully preventing mosquitoes from becoming resilient to this stessor and getting immune to it so to speak
@@macauleywhite9407 No. it kills off all arthropods, including the mosquito larvae predators like dragonflies. I wouldn’t trust the water to be safe for the visiting pollinators either. I prefer to encourage biodiversity as control. Fish alone as control doesn’t work well
After being stationed in NOLA and standing guard on the entry gate, wearing a BLACK uniform I found mosquitoes love that color. yes! Those bugs love dark colors.
@@macauleywhite9407if you attract dragonflies and water beetles, you’ll have no mosquitos to really worry about.
I cover mine with chicken wire and place a stick at an angle in the bucket just in case so a toad, frog, moth or whatever can climb out. Nothing but mosquitos harmed with my buckets here in Houston! Dark green buckets from Amazon and they work great for control around my yard!!!
Just a thought - No need to drill tree. Take a length of cord / rope little over twice the diameter of the tree. Tie the ends together, wrap around tree and pull knot through loop. Take a branch or dowel (strong enough to hold bucket) and slide behind knot. Slip branch / dowel through handle of bucket and let weight hold it tight to tree.
@howtohomediy How about this? Another solution that doesn’t damage the tree.
Bucket should be dark. Also add some grass clippings/leaves. It will start to breakdown and release carbon dioxide which also attracts them. I also have buckets that don't have dunks but a few drops of dish soap (but don't use grass/leaves but sugar and yeast). Break the water tension and the mosquitos trying to lay eggs will sink and drown.
Those products probably kill our dragon fly friends who eat incredible amounts of mosquitoes. Dragon flies are amazing. When they fly right up to you, almost like they are looking you in the eye, they are actually eating the mosquitoes buzzing around you.
They don’t
In south Florida we pour a little cooking oil ( olive oil ) on top of water ( water in buckets) not ponds. Oil smothers larvae . Safe and cheap solution.
A black bucket works a lot better. They're drawn to black 🖤
I have an abandoned pool near my house. I treat it regularly with this stuff and I actually have LESS mosquitos around than if the pool wasn’t there at all. Awesome product!
I've used the dunks for years. They do a good job of keeping the mosquitos down.
Thanks... Would have loved to have seen a follow-up, with the larvae filled bucket...
Well done... Very helpful...
Those Mosquito Dunks are a blessing for sure!😊
Mosquitos love dark colors so make the buckets black or dark green.
Been using the Bits and Dunks for years, they work great.
I use the dunks in my rain barrel to spay around may garden for the fungus gnats. Be careful about touching your eyes. You can have an irritation reaction
Great video! We’ve used those mosquito dunks for years, they really work. Thanks!
They really do! Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with them. Always good to hear when things are working for others as well! Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you for all this awesome information and the research put into this idea. I can only wish people would only put this much information research into those that we plan on voting for as these people run our country. That person that not only runs our country but is the face of it and the mouth of our country. As for the info on what this video is about I’m definitely going to check this out and see how this can work because it does make sense but need to do some more research. 👍. Thanks again mate.
We love your channel! Sound all around advice. Thank you!
I've been using this method for two years now. It works really well. I use the dunks. It's time to do this up here in the Northeast!
Yep, forgot to cover my buckets and just two days ago a finch fell into one, probably drying to get a drink or bathe, and had to fish him out. Will be adding covers to all of them shortly.
Thank you very much from East Coast Canada 🇨🇦🛎
I've been doing mosquito control professionally for 10 years. Bits work well, it's basically what we use. Dunks don't work as well. I have had many customers who have used them with no results. Use bits not dunks.
Excellent idea. I currently have 4 dynotraps around my 3 acers and they have been a game changer. On windy days the population get shifted and they need a few day to thin them out again.
This idea I know will make a difference.
Can u tell me how u use it? I have one and followed the directions and find no difference, do u have any tips?
yeah i would like to know how your dynatrap works in your yard- have you noticed a reduction in the no-see-ums?
good video.. you explain how to use it and how to DIY the project, I going to follow your steps to build my TRAP..good idea to hang up in the tree i don't have to worry for my Dogs.
You have to chop up the dunks somehow if you live in a very rainy place like Alaska or Washington. Mosquitoes can lay eggs on wet grass!
Thank you!
try planting lavender around, made my life mosquito free
I may have to try that. Smells good too! Thanks for the tip!
Good to know
You can also put a few drops of oil in the water. It doesn't take much because the oil spreads over the surface. Personally I would suggest cooking oil like canola or corn oil. People used to suggest using old motor oil but that's not really good for the environment. A few drops of cooking oil is going to be a much safer alternative.
You can also try a few drops of dish soap. This breaks up the surface tension of the water and keeps the mosquitoes from being able to land safely on the surface to lay eggs.
I might have missed the answer in this video. What size of area would 1 bucket work for. Thank you
Guppies works 100%
Thanks!
You are very welcome. Glad you liked it. Thanks a lot for the feedback and the Super Thanks Jennifer!
Will have to look into these, and find out whether these bacteria are even a risk to us humans... Our house water barrels are breeding skeeters again, and we tried the veggie oil (which did work) but it made a mess of the barrel, plus did not age well (we don't go through our water very fast, as it's labour-intensive to bring in so we're VERY conservative with our usage!)... We use this water for brushing our teeth, so if these microscopic critters are actually benign to us, we'll definitely have to get some of this stuff!
Mosquito larvae live in wet soil now and develop faster. I just had an invasion of them in a big potted plant outside. A few years ago I found them in a patch of mint under a dripping faucet. They say mint and other plants repel them but that has never worked for me.
Ruby red minnows also work
How would these effect an aquarium pond?
Great!!
What are you do if you have a creek next to your house don’t they lay eggs on the bank of the creek or a very mushy yard?
question: if you find larvae in any standing water, can you just dump the water? won't that kill the 'skeeters?
Paint the buckets black. Black or dark colors seem to attract mosquitoes more than any other colors. Just a thought
Dark blue lowe's bucket?
@@69BTony i just bought some blue buckets from lowes today- hoping to see some results !
what is the range of mosquitos ? you can use all the methods you want but if they are breeding at the neighbors place or down a couple houses in their pond or ditchline does it matter what you do on your property ??
Use black buckets
I just purchased the dunks, the bits and the buckets. So my only question is, when its been sitting for around a month, what then? do I dump it and start again? will the eggs that I dump hatch?
dee
How far do mosquitoes travel? I live in the woods and they are everywhere. I have 4 acres and I’d like to know how far from the house I should be doing these dunks?
I use goldfish. In just a day and a half the problem was gone and I now set outside without getting bit. Goldfish are only 20 to 40 cents depending on location and size of goldfish.
I don't doubt this kills mosquitos but an wondering if just not having open buckets of water in the first place to draw them in would be better. I mean there is slways going to be mosquitos coming into the area.
What is the reason to have the bucket off the ground?
I can't help hearing/visualizing the Rick & Morty episode w/ "Interdimensional Cable"...
LIL BITSSSS
In all seriousness tho, I will have to try this. Mosquitoes are a PITA
Can they be used when i have tadpoles ?
I notice that when I put a dunk in a bucket of water the water turns murky. Are the mosquitoes still attracted to this water? Or do I have to change the water after a while?
Problem with mozzies is that they are always around and not necessarily anywhere near identifiable standing water.
They love my oak trees
So it's not going to hurt other bugs? Like bee's, or dragonflies?
Real easy to make a home made umbrella to place above the bucket.
A commenter on another RUclips video suggested placing 3-4 holes around the sides of the bucket at the maximum level you want water to reach. When it rains the water will pour out the holes and never get higher than your holes. The only exception may be torrential rains that put more water in your bucket than your holes can handle.
But aren't you also diluting the water each time the water pours out? The bacteria (which is what the dunks are made of and are what is killing the mosquitos) floats on the surface, so it would seem that would pour right out of the holes.
I liked your other build, trap thanks for making it a actual how to,not fake with stupid music, I'm in los Angeles, there's just not allot of options & I don't got patience to search on line find wiat for whatever to arrivebas u said, bait is the key, in my laundry room them bastards love my dirty construction clothes, I ripped up a sacrificed shirt, gonna put 2 traps in the garage 9ne in the yard, what was the spray u used in the other vid ive tried boric acid and a cheveron bran bug spray in la the mosquitos have goten smaller and they dont need much water the dew on leaves moisture under the washer, these tiny little suckers bite through socks and shirts, thanks again 👍
I live in Florida and I kill billions of mosquitos every year without any of that stuff. Here's how. I leave buckles out with enough water, about a gallon so the mosquitos can lay their eggs. I check them all the time since they are always in my normal travels. Once I see the larvae, I dump the bucket on my hot driveway and they die. No chemicals nor any costs and simple as heck. Why buy something to kill them in standing water to then do what? Dump the water with dead larvae? I learned that as a kid in Puerto Rico where mosquitos are year round and worse than anywhere I have had a problem by a long shot. Sitting water was everywhere and the problem is so bad you can't open your mouth to speak or eat without a bunch trying to lay eggs in your mouth. The more scarce you make them, the less food for frogs, lizards and bats so they will help minimize the mosquito population. In other words, they help get rid of the ones that you didn't get and the helpers will fight for the supply that's lower. Others come but if everyone does this everywhere, we can eradicate this problem.
One should never keep standing water. I always do & check daily. Same dump when larvae, though on my garden/plants. Mosquitoes will find standing water, I want them to find mine.
Great job. Most people would forget and make the problem worse
@@MastaMoMo83 Many people, including me, don't want to take the time and exert the effort to dump the water often enough.
Good to know
@@jannh29 That's what I was thinking. Checking and refilling buckets almost daily vs once every 30 days. My time is worth way more than the cost of the dunks.
Well i can confirm the dunks are animal safe. I had a pack of dunks sitting on a bench and my dog ate them. The whole pack. He never showed any signs of being sick.
You might use black buckets because the mosquitoes like the darkness
What happens if a person forget those buckets in the forest?
Don't the dunks prevent them from laying too? So makes buckets pointless?
Does not prevent them from laying.
I'm confused. Your saying to get rid of mosquitos is to provide them more places to bread (but still die I guess)? Isn't it best to get rid of standing water that has no purpose, tires, buckets, etc., and treat the standing water with the product you are pitching that does have purpose, animal waterers, rain collection, etc?
our county mosquito control uses peanut oil in the ditches
The ones that breed in water are just one kind. Some mosquitos breed in mud. What about them?
Actually if you find standing water with mosquito larva in it, the MOST effective, cheap and safe product to use is a few drops of Dawn dish soap!
Dish soap - even dawn - is no longer safe! Read the ingredients: all the manufacturers have changed their formulas at some point while our backs were turned, and all contain nasty chemicals now!
would love to know how to fight no see ums In florida
me too! Does these dunks work for no see ums? anyone know?
Cedarcide
Good luck with that. It helps but you better hang on to the bug repellent. Dunks work great but mosquitoes can reproduce on wet grass. rain puddles, neighbors yard etc. i live in the South. 😉 glad I don’t live in Canada. Heard their mosquitoes are giants!
Work great for me here in the South!
@@HowToHomeDIY they must like me better 😂
@Christian-jx3nx 😂
Adam what is your last name or how can we get a hold of you for questions? I’m trying to build a fire pit patio and need your help!!
What? I don't have to buy a machine designed by the military to kill all mosquitos in 90 secs? (RUclips ad). I will need to try this instead, great video. Thanks
But youtube is the guardian of truth. It must be so if they allow it on their platform!
Where can I get this product?
I found it at Home Depot
I use goldfish and guppies works 100%
Just what i needed, another AD!!!
? Do you want to know what works or not? Can’t make most things out of dirt.
Are they safe to use in a pool?
Per the packaging they are good for UNUSED swimming pools. There really is no need to put them in a maintained chlorinated swimming pool as the environment is not conducive for mosquito breeding due to the chlorine.
Found 2 drowned mice so far this year using dunks.
Learning from these comments.
Are they safe to use around honeybees?
Yes they are. The bacteria in the dunks don't affect bees at all.
Is amazon the only place to buy it..? 🤔
Lowe's has it!
Tractor supply sells it
Is it safe for honey bees?
I keep hives and I haven’t lost any bees using this method. But it hasn’t worked well for controlling mosquitoes.
I’m at the point where I’m thinking of selling my hives, just so I can fog for mosquitoes.
They are big and mean in my yard!
If you put the hardware clothe bee's shouldn't be able to get in,,,, besides bee's are focused on their next flower,,, and they get moisture from the flowers also,,,, bee's don't go for a bucket of water, esp with hardware cloth
Bees do go to buckets, barrels and other water sources for water to cool the hive with.
@@JustMe-gs9xi respectfully I disagree. I can bet you do not have 🐝 Bees
Hole in the bucket. Small but genius decision
Dose it work with midgets (gnats) as well ?
I would like the answer to that also
Why do you hang the buckets off the ground?
Just so my kids don't mess with it. More effective closer to the ground.
Was the giant screw in the tree really necessary? That hanging bucket is the ugliest thing on such a nice tree..
Yup. It was.
Whenever I found a puddle with mosquitoes I spray it with Raid. Works almost instantly.
I change my bird water almost daily.
Kills other non target species. Is also illegal. And is pretty lame.
Don't Poison your LAND,,, that sinks into groundwater,, Raid kills good bugs,,, Dragonflies eat mosquito's....you can't do that,,, a dog could drink from it and get really SICK!
Goodness, woods with grass abd brush growth near the house...i get it w the sketter trestments.
( I would be brush killing for months and just have trees and mowing in that area.)
The idea that animals can drink or live in the water that these chemicals are in while not advising humans to swim in them should be a red flag.
It’s not a chemical.
The bacteria die off after 6 months. 🤔
What if we feed that bacteria what it wants like some kind of sugar. It could last as long as you take care of it.😊
I just throw a new dunk in.
A few drops of kerosene on top of stagnant water works too.
They breed in the dew, here.
Or you can grow lemon eucalyptus trees around your property and lemongrass around your house
Lol my wife got lemongrass and it does nothing to help. Citronella candles too same result. That natural stuff is a joke IMO
You definitely don’t want small critters in there because they’ll drown.
why off the ground?
Just so it’s up out of the way and I personally don’t want any animals or my kids getting into it or knocking it over. The closer to the ground, in my opinion, the better it works.
The rats are back and ate some bait. That's where the flies are from
I live on a swamp and that provides dragon flies to get rid of mosquitoes I just have to be patient
or you could just dump out the standing water
Why?
Being a pesticide product, this WILL kill the good/helpful bugs, insects, etc. If you have a garden, pond etc. you could cause considerable more problems than you started with. Diversity is always the best policy in the garden. Plant lots of diferent species particularly flower varieties. The more good insects, birds, bats, aquatic life/fish you can attract and KEEP/SUPPORT in the area the better. You'll always find a few nasties but they'll be kept under control.
Or you could BUY 3 or 4 Mosquito fish.
tell me more!
This doesn't work because fish need oxygen and an aerobic environment. Mosquitos specifically look for standing anaerobic water.
You forgot one important aspect of the mosquito life cycle. The female must find blood 🩸 to provide her eggs with the necessary protein. The males are only there to fertilize the eggs-they do not “bite”.
Algorithm boost.
^5
You state the life cycle of the adult mosquito is only 1-2 weeks and this is simply untrue... for the females. They can live as long as 2 years, even hibernating over the winter months in cold climates... just ask any Alaskan.
No, they don’t live that long. Not even the females.
You're both right, kind of,, most mosquitoes only live a couple weeks but some can hibernate for 6-8 months. They remain inactive in that time so they aren't a problem.
👍Cat control too 🤣😅
??
Not sure how to say this...but these products are insecticide. Try a different title?
Not sure how to say this. No they aren't. It is bacteria. That is not an insecticide. Good effort though. 🤣
If you're killing insects with it, it is absolutely insecticide, by definition.
So fly paper, bug zappers, and your car windshield are insecticides. I never knew! 😂
@@HowToHomeDIY your windshield's purpose is not to kill insects. Fly papers and big zappers would be insecticides. Give yourself a pat on the back! You almost got all three!
I mean it was more of a joke but ok 🤣
Those are both insecticides returd
Nope. Just bacteria. All upset over nothing 🤣
@@HowToHomeDIYa bacteria that kills insects. Insecticide is something with a purpose is to kill insects. Your basically saying it's not homicide if you killed a guy by infecting them with bad E. Coli on purpose.
So is a bug zapper an insecticide? Or fly paper? Generally when people refer to insecticides they mean chemicals that kill insects and can sometimes be harmful to humans. So just trying to see how we are defining insecticides.
Infomercial
😂 what do you want? Do you want to know what works or not?
