We use the salt water bottles, but only half to 3/4ths full so they float around the top better. I used electrical tape around the lids on the thicker juice and Gatorade bottles to be sure they don't leak. Our bottles have lasted 5 years so far. We use kiddie pools for our ducks and chickens and one bottle per pool works. If we have more than 3 days of below freezing temps, I dump the water out of the kiddie pools at night. The bottles work during those times better in the day when it's above 15°F because the water is so shallow in the pools. We also use the bottles in our goat, sheep, dog, barn cat and cow water tanks & buckets. None of the animals have messed with them and they work to keep the ice out enough the animals can drink almost all winter for the weather we get here in north eastern AL. I take the bottles out during spring, summer and fall and set them on a shelf during warmer weather until I need them again when it gets cold. Hope that helps.

@Nick Jones it works until there are 3+ days of weather that doesn't get above 25ish...to help get another day or two, use black containers, wrap in some sort of insulation. 5-gal buckets in tires stuffed with straw, stock tanks with flakes of straw or hay stood around them and then tarps or plastic of some sort wrapped and tied or gorilla taped around the flakes & tarp to hold it against the tank sides. We have a tank water heater in the main one that works always. For a diy smaller version tank heater, we have used the old style 40-75 watt light bulbs with a ceramic light socket like you use in a closet inside a cinder block and put buckets and tubs of water on top the cinder block where it wouldn't be rained on, securing the bucket so it couldn't be spilled - you need electricity & have to run extension cords with this and wrap the plugs with plastic, but this worked with extended single to teen digit temps - if only using lights, it worked best with smaller capacity water containers (2-3 gallon). In all the containers we put a heat source under or in, we found if we also floated the salt water jugs, they never froze and then it didn't matter what gallon capacity. It was nice to not have to haul water when we discovered that. We had a solar battery thing we hooked one light to on one tank where we couldn't reach with cords & when we lost power for a few days. Hope that helps with more ideas. I hate hauling water in icy weather, so we've tried a lot of things, but these are the ones that worked best for us in the coldest weather we get. :-)

If you take a look at what Chad at Adler Farms has done in trough water, he puts a 2x4 in it that you can hit with a hammer or something that will break the ice easily. The wood floats and does not freeze.

The driveway cement in front of the house i did a lot of my growing up on was added long after the fact between 2 retaining walls. There was a corner and edge which was dipped a little and, if we got cold weather and if there was water puddled in that corner it turned to ice. We kids decided one year that slip-sliding around was fun enough to add water for strength, depth, and breadth of that ice patch. We did it a shallow layer at a time throughout a couple of days to arrive at solid, slick, clear ice. My mother was NOT positively impressed when she discovered that the ice patch was expanding to the top of the 2 cement steps leading into the house. That was the last ice patch but, it sure was fun. - We did survive our childhoods, and sometimes im sure only by the Grace of God.

That was fun watching Josiah trying to make a snow angel. That was so fun to see Cody play with you guys. It was funny to see the ducks have trouble with the ice on the pond. Thanks for the trick with the waterers. I'll have to try it. It's -9F this morning so we have plug in water buckets for the animals in the barn. Any water outside freezes solid. With the wind chill it's -23F. Brrrr! How is Randy doing?

I have a heated water bucket that I use for the goats. I don't worry too much about the water freezing here in southeast Kentucky. It doesn't stay cold long enough (I used to live in Canada). My horse knows how to break the ice in the creek, and I will break the ice for the chickens. I usually only have to deal with the inconvenience for a couple days before it's warming up again.

After living down there above Raleigh, for 5 years, the biggest issue I found was that the roads aren't treated well. But up here in NH we are used to that kind of weather, and they don't pretreat roads. They sand and salt if icy, and if just snow, they plow before they treat. I use black rubber bowls from TSC for my waters for animals. You can usually just turn them over and kick the ice out.

    • @sallyboothe911
      @sallyboothe911 2 года назад

I have a question about the black rubber bowls from TSC. I have looked at them when I first got chickens, I’m a reader so I read the labels on my stuff the animals etc. I had breast cancer 6 years ago and as I was reading about these bowls I saw there was a warning on them due to possibly causing cancer . I know I’m not going to be drinking from them but my chickens do and then we eat their eggs.
Does anyone else worry about things like this or am I just making life harder than it needs to be.
Thank you for anyone that will respond to this post.
Blessings from NE Mississippi, where it was a frigid 19 degrees this morning 🥶

I wonder if that trick will work in really cold conditions? -34c which is -29f up here in Ontario today, not easy to film my episodes as the cameras struggles, the batteries freeze and my face freezes too 😆 and the water bowls for the geese freeze in 2 hrs. I use heated poultry waterers in the octagonal 7 coop chicken house though so no issue there. Lots of neat ideas you two have, keep them coming. Cheers, Chad.

Hello Mike, It's come round to the cold season again. Have you tried putting a childrens' ball or football to float on the water to stop it freezing? If you can't afford to use all that salt or don't want to, then this is a good way. The movement of that round ball on the water surface stops any freezing so your animals can drink or maybe even swim if you throw a couple of footballs on the pond. Save throwing rocks out there when it could be dangerous for you, footballs will be safer. This works in my part of the UK in winter where we often get real snowfalls and icy weather. Love & blessings. (My first message went astray before I could send it) 😁😁

No, I have never tried the salt water bottle thingy>>>>BUT!!!!! I will now!! Thank you!! What a cool and nifty trick!! My goats water was frozen solid today in the 1/2 of a 55 gallon barrel trough!
You are lucky with the weather seldom going below freezing!! It has been 9 degrees with a wind chill of -2 here for the past few days.....and I am further South than you are>>>>>Missouri Ozarks here>>>Zone 6b. We are having a very cold winter this year. And it is good in that it will kill all the ticks and chiggers; it is NOT fun because I am living in an RV this winter!!! Talk about freezing your butt off! No way to have wood heat, but next year I will NOT be caught out like this!! Next winter I WILL have under pinning around this RV and I WILL run a hot air vent from a wood stove underneath the RV to warm things up, with possibly a way to vent it inside. Should not be that hard to set that up.
My goat that is pregnant STILL has not had her kids yet!! Her milk bag is full, Full, FULL>>>>>wish she would come on>>>>maybe she is going to wait until it is just a bit warmer>>>>which would be VERY nice!
Take good care of each other and carry on>>>>the baby goat was adorable>>>>they always are!!
Peace and blessings to all of you!!

You can also add a SMALL amt of salt actually IN their waterers (in the water itself). The minerals are fine for them and it also helps to keep from freezing. Not an excessive amt.
Something else I learned is for males (like goats and sheep) is that they have sensors on top of their heads that make them a little more aggressive and cause them to buck more. The rule of thumb for the males is chin scratches only, never on top of the head. With children around, something to consider.
Love your vids! So neat to see you guys grow and flourish on your homestead. Beautiful job! Ty for all of your information.

Unfortunately, I was living in Nebraska and well....winter there is brutal. So, it didn't work in that harsh environment. Or maybe the water was too shallow for it to work. Ice does indeed help your dance moves.
I will be surprised if this prevents the drinking water from freezing if everything else is equal. What I have always heard is that salt lowers the freezing point of water not warming it in any way. For example; we use salt to freeze ice cream because it lowers the temperature of the ice around the container which includes the cream. This draws the thermal units from the cream into the ice so the ice cream formula freezes but it does not eliminate any thermal units, only transfers their location.
To really test the efficacy of this idea you really need equal outside temps from one night to the next and equal volumes of drinking water submitted to the same temps for the same length of time. It would be more convincing to me if there had been a control batch of drinking water right beside the water containing the bottles of salted water. Sorry to be so skeptical but I would love to see this done with some water with the bottles beside some water without the bottles.

Pretty SLICK moves there Mike 😏. Selah is such a natural with the animals and always helps with a smile. The salt water in the ice was pretty cool idea. Thank goodness I don't have to deal with that much in south Alabama but we are supposed to have a chance of it Friday and Saturday. Keep up the good work and God bless you all

Yes I did that but it told me to tape the lids so the water would not leak out in my animals water just in case it leaks I did this method years ago it works like you said and I hey said but my problem my dog won't to play with the bottle so it wouldn't work for her lol yes that what she did so I went out a bought her a water bucket that you plugged up and so I did for my chicken's. GOD BLESS you all say warm.

That's a cool ideal with the salt bottles I'm going to try that even the dog water if my stupid dog won't take the bottle out thinking it's a crew toy ,,I notice your ducks were talking junk about your ice pond

It's just like floatin a couple boards in the stock tank. Just keeps the water movin a little bit so it doesn't fully freeze.

Chilly days for sure. We're hitting teh 20's that last few days and it's cold! I've never use saltwater bottles. Looks like a great way to passively keep water from totally freezing. I have a video of the method we use. It's not passive but it doubles as an extra level of comfort for your livestock. Search my channel for Surviving Snowpocalypse. Best to you guys.
