  • In this video, Mary and Denise recommend some recent books they enjoyed as a way to get our heads out of Star Wars and support female creators. Women are writing tons of great books, and that’s where we can find stories with strong heroines, happy endings, and interesting romantic plots.
    Lots of fantasy, enemies-to-lovers romance, some weird plots, beauty and the beast and Eros and Psyche retellings, fairytale vibes, from both indie and trad authors.
    Some of the books we discuss or mention are:
    A Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster (by the way, the heroine is sent as a political hostage, not in marriage. I read this a long time ago and had forgotten it.)
    Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder
    Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Rodge
    Air Awakens by Elise Kova
    Uprooted and Spinning Silver by Naomi Nokik
    Neron Rising by Keary Taylor
    Dark King by C. N Crawford
    A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

    That tragic moment when you've already read all of these 😂 But I'm so happy to see my favorite books getting the love they deserve! Especially Air Awakens since it's an indie pub

      It's not tragic but amazing. I think Mary read The Winternight Trilogy. I might try it. I haven't heard of Heart's Blood but I might check it out. And yes, we made a point of having a good mix of trad books and indies.

    How funny, I’m on the last book of A Court of Thorn and Roses, as was thinking about how Rhys/Feyre, (pronounced Fey-Rah) is very Reylo-esqe! Or how I image Ben and Rey’s relationship would have been had it been allowed to develop.
    I’m so glad you have an Eros and Psyche rec, that’s always been my favorite Greek myth and I was wondering if there were any books along that vein.
    This was an excellent podcast idea, thanks for the recs!

    • @Romanceguru

      P.s. My rec is Land of the Beautiful Dead by R.L Smith. It’s a pretty dark monster romance, but very deep and moving.

    You should also check out Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan it’s SO good and one of the romances is very reyloesque. The author is actually a massive Kylo Ren/Ben Solo fan and you can see that in her three main characters who are very similar to him, especially my fave dark prince Serefin. Great video I can’t wait to read some of these 🖤

    • @LordsoftheSithPodcast
      @LordsoftheSithPodcast  4 года назад +2

      Mary read it and enjoyed it a lot. I tried reading it but haven't finished it yet. I said I would read it if the romance was with the prince. But yes, Mary said reading it was healing in the sense that it was cool to see an enemies-to-lovers romance without judgment on whether it's right or wrong.

    Some fan fiction I’d recommend:
    The Fall Of Skywalker
    The Awakening
    The Gray Knight (on wattpad)
    And my fan fic A New Day
    Also, if you like fairy tales, you NEED to watch RWBY!! It’s a anime that is basically like the ultimate fairy tale crossover! Every character is based off of a fairy tale character and there are a lot of parallels to fairy tales in the show. It also has some of the best fight scenes in my opinion, and the music is amazing!
    There’s even a character named Adam who’s a villain and he reminds me so much of Ben!

    I love the Air Awakens Series! Because it was not widely published, I took a chance and bought the first book from Amazon since it wasn't available at my state's library. I fell in love with the series and bought the rest of the series upon release date! It really is similar to ATLA with Aldrik being a Kylo Ren replica and Vhalla mirroring Rey. Great romance between the two and amazing action! Would 10/10 recommend! It's one of my favorite series!

    Great video thanks ladies!! I was curious if there were any books reylo-esc that didn’t have a tone of magic in them? Kinda dystopian like would be super cool, lmk!❤️

    • @LordsoftheSithPodcast
      @LordsoftheSithPodcast  4 года назад

      It's tricky because Star Wars is fantasy in space, right? And I guess both of us enjoy fantasy... I don't like dystopian much, but if you want I could ask for a recommendation. The most sci-fi book in this list is Neron Rising, which is sci-fi, but more like space fantasy, and inspired by Reylo.

    • @jujube150
      @jujube150 4 года назад

      I tentatively suggest books by R Lee Smith, particularly Land of the Beautiful Dead. A lot of Reylos really love it, including me, Ohtze, and afterblossom-art. Her books get real dark real fast, though. Also, I got serious Reylo vibes from Reign by May Sage, which is all space opera. The Firebird trilogy by Claudia Gray is good even if it's not overtly Reylo, although the author herself is a shipper and the story is sort of enemies-to-lovers and explores the idea of soulmates.

      There's a really good scifi series by Rachel Bach which has a definite angsty friends to enemies to lovers thing going on over the three books. Also lots of scifi tropes, nasty aliens, bad empires and lots of intrigue. It's called the Paradox Series and is a real favourite of mine. www.goodreads.com/book/show/15790894-fortune-s-pawn

    • @micheller1475
      @micheller1475 3 года назад

      I think "Chosen Ones" by Veronica Roth might be along the lines of what you're looking for. There *is* magic, but it's more about the deconstruction of "chosen one" tropes in fantasy/YA literature. There's a very pre-TRoS Rey and very Ben/Kylo character, with a very Reylo romance storyline.

      I started reading it and I love the prose and dialogue! Love it. So far I found the romance a bit instalove from his part, but I'm really enjoying it. No spoilers because I'm mid-book. Mary by coincidence is reading another book by Laini Taylor, I forgot which. We'll need to finish them and talk about them. If we ever do another episode like this, we could talk about these books.

      Lords of the Sith Podcast oh yay! I’m so glad you are reading them! I agree her romances can be a bit instalove, but I think she gets away with it because her writing is so fantastic! Her other big series is Strange the Dreamer. Also great in my opinion, but doesn’t fit the enemies to lovers trope.

      Lords of the Sith Podcast I was thinking a little more about the enemies to lovers trope and thought of another book series I like. The Winner’s Curse trilogy. The main character, Kestrel, is a bit similar to Jude from Folk of the Air. Both very smart and a little ruthless.

And there's My Dear Cold-blooded King, a romance between a low born woman and the titular king. Sub-Zero, where a princess from a family of blue dragon shifters that can control the weather, must marry a prince from a family of red, fire breathing dragon shifters, in order to end the long war their nations have been fighting. And my personal favorite, Midnight Poppy Land, a slow-building romance between a shy book editor from suburbia, and a smoking hot, tattooed gangster.

    This has been one of my favorite videos that you guys have done so far (maybe i’m Biased cause I love to read). Anything that involves literary parallels is great by me. In case you ever decide to do another one of these videos, I highly recommend these two books to check out. One is called Keturah and Lord Death by Martine Leavitt. It’s about a young woman who makes a bargain with Death himself. If she can find her true love within a day she can live a long and happy life, if she doesn’t she has to become Death’s bride. The second, to be honest I am not 100% sure how reylo it is but it feels like it’s in a similar enemies to lovers vein. It’s called Naked in Death by J.D. Robb. It’s about a police detective that lives in a futuristic New York City who is trying to solve a Jack the Ripper esq series of crimes and falls in love with a man who turns out be her leading suspect. There are a lot of trigger warnings for the latter (none of which happen between the main couple) including rape, incest, and really bad misogyny (but perpetrated by the bad guys) just so you know. Stay safe and can’t wait for more content!

    Recommendations:
    Tinker, by Wen Spencer. It doesn't have enemies to lovers and it's not a romance novel (romance sub plot, but it's not the entire focus of the book), but it has an accidental marriage, like an accidental Force bond, magic, and is all around a good book.
    .
    Ancient Magus Bride by Kore Yamazaki, anime/manga series, follows a young girl bought by a socially awkward monster who takes her as an apprentice to teach her about magic, with the idea that they will eventually marry. It's very sweet for people who love monster husband stories.
    .
    I've written a book inspired in part by Reylo. It's not a fanfic, it's an original work. Hoping to get it to a developmental editor to beat it into shape and eventually get it published, but I've got the current draft on AO3 here if you're interested: archiveofourown.org/works/16437590/chapters/38488604
    .
    My bf recommends Romeo and Juliet. I hadn't thought about it before, but I can see how he might have thought of it. Probably not what you want to read if you're upset by the end of TROS, though. :/
