Looks like the 5500 is going to have a self loading wrecker body. I might be wrong but they make the perfect "Night Stalker " repo trucks. Especially with that frame reinforcement! Great Video!!
That big RAM truck, cab and chassis, is exactly what I had in mind to pull a 31' boat. Thank you, because I didn't know that combination was even built.
I have driven one of these halfway across the country and back several times. 4x4 Crew cab spec 5500 auto. Probably 15-20k miles behind the wheel. It has a 12' steel flat bed. I have driven it with 9,000lbs, 4500lbs, and empty flatbed. My biggest gripe is the seats. Good power, good brakes. Decent amenities. Uladen it can be a bit harsh, but hey...it is a truck after all. Averages around 12mpgs unladen at 70mph and a little over 10mpgs with 9k on the back at 70mph. The seat is only comfortable for about 7-8 hours behind the wheel in my experience. Granny gear is ultra low.
Finally! A heavy duty Ram video from you. The 5500 has a gvwr of around 19,000 pounds, excellent for the heaviest slide in truck cabover campers especially if you want to tow a trailer behind. That tongue weight plus the camper will still be under the gross weight. The base weight is around 9000 pounds so there is at least 9000+ pounds of payload available. It also comes with the Aisin medium duty truck transmission (partly owned by Toyota) so the transmission goes very well with the engine. The Aisin is available in the Cummins HO engines in the 3500 series as well. Thank you for the video!!
The max gvw for the 5500 is 19,500lbs. We own several that are built as wreckers and love them. I can say they definitely handle weight better than the Ford Super Duty 550's as they do not squat like the Fords do when loaded with a heavier car or van.
I own an F550 and the utility improvement over my GMC 3500 Dually Denali is dramatic. Sure the Denali rode nicer, but the heavy suspension of the F550 was far and away better handling feel with my 19k lb toy hauler fully loaded. One has to expect a stiffer ride with a more capable machine.
That 4500 is a work truck only, it rides like aTRUCK, not like a cowboy cadillac, that straight axle gives a hard ride, the rear suspension also gives a harsh ride, the 19.5 tires hold 90 psi, the RV crowd would hate the 4500 with a passion after the first 100 miles, I drove a1995 Chev HD for 10 years in the construction biz And finally wore it out, now drive a conventional 3500 flatbed. These trucks are not toys, they are tools!
I use that 5500 one everyday at work let me tell ta to me it rides almost like a pick up. And it climbs hills pretty easy. My work truck is a 4 wheel drive model. I love driving it. Mines used to haul dirty and clean water around to service porta potties. cool vid also
Fred Boggs I've only seen one truck for that kind of job (or maybe septic tanks) but on the side said 10,000 lbs of really gross weight, pretty funny, I wonder if others have some other stuff written on them?
19.5 Alcoa's are available on the 5500 but only in the upgraded models. If you want I can look on my window sticker to let you know the cost. But they only come with the chrome bumpers and higher trim level.
You said that only steel wheels were available in this configuration (Ram 5500 cab chassis with cummins) and the only way to get aluminum wheel is through the aftermarket. This is not true. These trucks do indeed come from the factory with Alcoa aluminum wheels. They have aluminum front wheels with Ram center caps, along with two aluminum outer dual, and two steel inner dual wheels in the rear, also with Ram center caps.
The Dodge 5500 with diesel and 6 speed manual would definitely be ideal for recreational doubt towing for me. It is a truck that pulls a fifth wheel camper with a second trailer behind it.
The Class 4 RAM 4500 and 5500 Series competes directly against the Ford Class 4 F450/F550 Cab and Chassis trucks. The F450 PICKUP is designed to be a class 3 pickup just like a RAM 3500 and GM 3500HD dually
Big Truck Big RV I’d get a RAM 5500 SLT 4X4 Regular Cab White with Beige interior and the 8.4 inch UConnect with Navigation with the Max Traction 4X4 Tires with the Manual shift 4x4
Yes, cab and chassis are more heavily sprung because they are designed to carry max GVW loads 100% of the time. You can replace the rear leaf packs with a 4 bag air bag system and it will go done the road much smoother. Kelderman is one provided of such a system. The system that I have is self leveling so you don't have to worry about head light aiming between loaded and non-loaded operation. Another things that is difference for the cab and chassis is that it is legally a commercial truck. It is hard to get non-commercial insurance for it if you are not running a business. Also you have to stop at California weight stations. Typically those are not a big deal just a few minutes of time. But don't blow one of them. It is not a ticket. If CHP is pissy you will have to appear before they will let you proceed.
on the 3500 single, the canister you called the DPF is actually the SCR I believe. The DPF is probably under the cab, in-line before the SCR. I've noticed on the RAM chassis-cab models, the DEF tank hangs below the frame like on the GM's, but it's further back (closer to the center of the wheelbase) than the GM, which is pretty far forward. I wonder if the location of the tank on the RAMs is less likely to bottom-out because it's close to the center of the break-over angle.
I used to work for a Chrysler dealership as an auto tech back in the early and mid 2000 and the trucks at least in the heavy-duty class 3500 duallys were horrible trucks we used to have constant lawsuits from catering companies and construction companies on the misrepresentation that the salesman would sell these trucks on the Transmissions couldn't hold up in the trucks and couldn't carry the weight whether it was diesel or gas it didn't matter they sure seem to have come along way anyways great video thank you
LOVE LOVE LOVE your channel. You helped me to upgrade from my 2004 2500 with a gas motor, to a 2012 Dodge 3500 with the 6.7 in the dually version (with Kings Ranch front and rear bumpers). Love it and dont regret the jump to diesel. Question... Why the row of lights on the roof? I have never been able to figure out why.
I think the role of lights on the roof are to identify the truck as a dually. that is 8 feet wide. We have that on two of our Duallys and also our dually Ford motorhome. Not sure if those lights are also on the roof of the 3500 single rear wheel
Interesting differences on the SRW 3500 Cab & Chassis vs the regular SRW 3500 pickup. I wish the spring pack from the Cab & Chassis was the same on the SRW pickup. DEF tank placment is different too. Thanks for the video.
Ford sucks the reason why dodge makes there frames so tall in that back section is because that is where a lot of stress is at when hauling had a f-450 with my other company and the paint started to crack in that section of the frame my new company uses dodges haven’t had any issues like that and have used the same truck for almost 6 years now definitely would recommend Cummins as a work truck best truck motor out there hands down I pull a trailer everyday about 200 miles a day roughly with a tounge weight of close to 20,000 pound has no problems at all when I used the ford had a problem with even the slightest incline or drive way but not with a dodge
My mom got a Chevy cruze after Harvey. The salesman at Classic Chevy im houston says. He sold more 1 ton Rams when he worked for them than 1 ton Chevys.
No diff 2 wheel drive remember when he showed the axle tube thickness ? No axle shaft and no transfer case. That being said they definitely drove it into the curb parking it
Rich Farfugnuven C'mon now he doesn't have a problem with meth how dare you speculate on someone's addiction!! ..... by the way it's a Heroin problem! lol
I beat you up pretty good on your last video I watched regarding your dislikes on your 450...but this one you did good! Not that you would care one way or another about my .2 !!
I don't understand why they'd detune the heavier duty trucks? I'm sure it has something to do with being fleet vehicles but you'd think the buyer would want full power.
Great video. I am not a Dodge guy whatsoever. I had an old '77 Power Wagon and had nothing but issues with the old 727 transmission that were in them. Ford has had my back many times in their trucks and never left me on the road side stranded.
David Genthner Jr the 727 is a stout transmission. I've only had to replace the external seals on mine in 2012 when it started leaking and its 30 years old and has 327,000 miles on it now. Been hauling a cabover slide in camper with it. Switched it to mopar brand atf+4 a couple years ago.
They use the steel wheels on the 5500 because they are stronger and more durable then the aluminum wheels. I agree the aluminum wheels do look a lot better though.
When the manufacturer goes to these deep rear ratios (4:10 and up) do they have different trans gear sets or does it all come out of speed in each gear?
Ram 2500/3500 wish they got the big ass tow hooks that the 4500/5500 trucks get. Try hooking a 3/8 chain or thick tow strap around a 2500/3500 front tow hook and it's a real pain in the ass. Did this 5500 have the Aisin Transmission?
Kind of hard to judge frame without knowing height and width. Like you said, that 13in in the center is quite tall. If you could plug all the numbers into solidworks and show us the rainbow stress, that would be great- lol.
the derating on the motors is just in the tuning correct? and its just for longevity. i know on my duramax c&c you can have it tuned with stock duramax regular pickup tune and its fine.
Ram hasn't had a good frame since the last 1992 when the last old trucks rolled off the line. I drove a brand new 1993 dodge tow truck the drive train was superb but the rear of the cab developed a stress crack due to a weak frame and in my opinion they have never gotten over that. If you want a good truck for tow truck use or even a flat bed for lumber etc. buy a Ford the suspension is heavier and the frames are excellent.
The way the wheels are angled on the 5 looks like the steering is busted. Like they hit a surprise rock on the road and snapped the steering arm. Especially at 4:19
Big Truck Big RV Oh yes I know how turning circles work the sharper the angle and shorter the wheelbase the better the radius. But I have a better idea for this truck. Drift truck! Because drift cars need a lot of steering angle to get those sick sideways action yo!
Why do chassis cab trucks have an open channel frame? I know that chevy does it and I now know that ram does it. Does Ford do it? What's the advantage? I wish chevy made a 4500-5500 truck. Not like the kodiak/topkick but like ram and Ford. Just a super awesome and beefed up version of their one ton. And I wish chevy used a solid front axle in them if they were to make them
Chassis cabs use open channel frames to make upfitting easier. They are a straight frame which is longer and narrower than a pickup frame, so fitting a pickup box on one would require fabricating new frame mounts and adding a filler between the cab and bed.
Here’s a guy who has built himself a 5500 single rear wheel with a pickup bed. www.cumminsforum.com/forum/4th-gen-cab-chassis/602274-5500-srw-pick-up-build-up-w-pics.html
Wonder why the DEF Filler and cap is predominant @2:30 this creates confusion people puts DEF in the diesel and vice versa. I like the DEF filler under the hood it is not technically difficult to do.
longevity and realizability. Plus,. employees driving fleet trucks don't need the acceleration and power designed to put a smile on personal truck owner's faces. To business owners it all about ROI and getting the longest service life.
Are the modern diesels from Ford/GM/Dodge making the exhaust from stainless steel? I'm really glad to see the powder coated chassis on that Ram - I think that will be a more durable surface than the wax coating.
I was wondering do you do comerical dump truck comparison video you do a thorough job better than any sales man giving consumers valuable information the time it would take for a person to look up
why are these heavier duty trucks detuned? seems pointless to detune a motor that is meant to heavy haul. just got a 3500 with the high output cummins. the ho cummins was the deciding factor for getting that truck lol
Another great video! I'm looking to get a Ram Cummins Diesel to pull a 15k rated 35' foot 5th wheel as a full time RVer. I was considering buying a 2500 or 3500 (leaning toward the 3500 single rear wheel and Aisen Trans) but I like the idea of having the better turning radius of the 4500. Could you give me your thoughts on the pros and cons and what you'd recommend based on my RV haulin' needs between the 2500/3500/4500? Thanks!
That's pretty heavy for a 35ft trailer I would say look at the pin weight before you decide. The 3500 should be able to handle slightly more pin weight but the biggest gain comes with dual tires. As far as turn radius wide axles are nice but commercial tires limit tire selection. A shorter wheel base will tighten turn radius as well if you don't need the long bed or full 4 door
GVWR is 15K, the hitch weight is 2350 lbs. The reasons I'm shying away from a dually is... 1. I have to pay for and maintain 2 extra tires and 2. I've heard it's harder to turn with duallys. That's what piqued my interest when @BigTruckRigRV showed off the better turn radius option on the 4500. The 2500 I believe comes with springs for a smoother ride, but the 3500 can haul more but it has the stiffer leaf springs and harder ride. As for the shorter wheel base and the crew cab I'd most likely have to get a slide hitch. For every pro there seems to be a con. It's enough to make your head spin! :>D
Clown PrinceB if your pulling a 5th wheel is stick to a regular cab long box that way you can stick to a normal 5th wheel hitch without smashing your back window
If u r worried about turning radius when driving a 20 ft truck pulling a 35ft trailer u shouldn't be driving a truck... spending the extra 10k on a 4500 to get turning radius when the weight rating of a 3500 srw will work is nuts
With weight the 5500 drives beautiful
Looks like the 5500 is going to have a self loading wrecker body. I might be wrong but they make the perfect "Night Stalker " repo trucks. Especially with that frame reinforcement! Great Video!!
I just purchased a 2019 1 ton dully Dodge Laramie 400 HP High Output Aisin 4:10 gears long bed exhaust brake loaded , wow do I love it
Don't think I'll ever need a truck in my life yet I watch all your videos
That big RAM truck, cab and chassis, is exactly what I had in mind to pull a 31' boat. Thank you, because I didn't know that combination was even built.

Currently I drive a Dodge 5500 for work just like this one it's alright. We use it for hauling lumber with a dump load bed.
5 seconds in and I already new he was gonna be dogging on it and comparing it to his Ford
I like the new logo you got! Looks very handsome.
Also, wonderful content as always. Unbiased and well informed.
The town I live in up here in Maine has a 5500 ram as an ambulance an it's beautiful
Wow that is a real truck!
Thank you for your unbiased video
19.5 Alcoa's are available on the 5500 but only in the upgraded models. If you want I can look on my window sticker to let you know the cost. But they only come with the chrome bumpers and higher trim level.
I really appreciate a real Texan reviewing trucks love your videos #texaspride
Very detailed review appreciate your testing

That 5500 would make a fantastic ambulance. Put on a braun or aev box, slap the aluminum wheels and a light bar. Would be a nice large box ambulance
+Medic 755: agree
The Class 4 RAM 4500 and 5500 Series competes directly against the Ford Class 4 F450/F550 Cab and Chassis trucks. The F450 PICKUP is designed to be a class 3 pickup just like a RAM 3500 and GM 3500HD dually
What axle does the 550 use? Is it larger than the possible 4.88 axle in the ram 5500?
Big Truck Big RV make sense but still you think of it I have twice the frame
Big Truck Big RV can you do a chavy Silverado
Big Truck Big RV I’d get a RAM 5500 SLT 4X4 Regular Cab White with Beige interior and the 8.4 inch UConnect with Navigation with the Max Traction 4X4 Tires with the Manual shift 4x4
The F-450 is listed as a Class 3 truck in the current style. Love the channel though!
Thanks for review of ram 5500
I own a 2005 3500 5.9 SRW LONG BED. Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. The SRW 3500 Long beds are hard to find.
Yes, cab and chassis are more heavily sprung because they are designed to carry max GVW loads 100% of the time. Also with massive price tag!!!
AWESOME GREAT INFO!!
Always good.
19.5" Alcoa's are a Ram option on the chassis cabs. The 60" CA has a 19K lb GVWR and the 84" or longer are 500 lbs higher.
on the 3500 single, the canister you called the DPF is actually the SCR I believe. The DPF is probably under the cab, in-line before the SCR.

And a big box and a wood chipper trailer and you got a prize there
Great video
I used to work for a Chrysler dealership as an auto tech back in the early and mid 2000 and the trucks at least in the heavy-duty class 3500 duallys were horrible trucks we used to have constant lawsuits from catering companies and construction companies on the misrepresentation that the salesman would sell these trucks on the Transmissions couldn't hold up in the trucks and couldn't carry the weight whether it was diesel or gas it didn't matter they sure seem to have come along way anyways great video thank you
There is no egr on the exhaust and therefore no sensors. They r temp, and pressure sensors for dpf and nox and temp for scr. Thanks.
Those are some itty bitty wheels for that giant body
Love my 5500! Tows my 9000 lb gooseneck no problem where it would make my 3500 Srw. wimper. Yes a little rough unloaded, otherwise it drives great.
Went a little heavy with the term "massive" LOL! But it works in the context you were applying it to!
Nice fair review.. Good job!
OH NO. HAHA ITS THIS GUY AGAIN. STOP YOURE A DODGE ELITIST OMFG
the only reason its fair for you is because its a dodge... if it was anything else you would be butthurt.
MCatwar
Lol
I would like to see you test drive a new Ram 550 ,with a flat bed on it. Maybe loaded down with a pallet of sakrete cement.
Interesting differences on the SRW 3500 Cab & Chassis vs the regular SRW 3500 pickup. I wish the spring pack from the Cab & Chassis was the same on the SRW pickup. DEF tank placment is different too. Thanks for the video.

My mom got a Chevy cruze after Harvey. The salesman at Classic Chevy im houston says. He sold more 1 ton Rams when he worked for them than 1 ton Chevys.
Who parked that 5500?
LOL! Had to show off that extreme turning capability somehow.
Hah. It appears the Diff is smashed into the curb :-)
I noticed that too. Probably the 17 year old lot kid with a meth problem.....
No diff 2 wheel drive remember when he showed the axle tube thickness ? No axle shaft and no transfer case. That being said they definitely drove it into the curb parking it
Rich Farfugnuven C'mon now he doesn't have a problem with meth how dare you speculate on someone's addiction!! ..... by the way it's a Heroin problem! lol

Your not a dodge guy because a 41 year old truck let you down?
Ram should make a Ram 4500 with a bed to compete with the F-450.
Carlton Banks a RAM 3500hd goes against f450
Ram does, it's called the 3500.
jdog942 and u still pay for it
They use the steel wheels on the 5500 because they are stronger and more durable then the aluminum wheels. I agree the aluminum wheels do look a lot better though.
HillBilly Steve Actually steelies are simply cheaper, aluminums are stronger and the lighter weight in a commercial application means a higher payload
Leo R Guevara aluminum is not stronger
Honestly it’s not that bad on price
Could you put a bed on these aftermarket to get the heavier setup from factory
Can you even get these giant trucks with a normal bed, instead of exposed frames and components?
When the manufacturer goes to these deep rear ratios (4:10 and up) do they have different trans gear sets or does it all come out of speed in each gear?
Depends. Can be yes or no.

Ram hasn't had a good frame since the last 1992 when the last old trucks rolled off the line. The way the wheels are angled on the 5 looks like the steering is busted. Like they hit a surprise rock on the road and snapped the steering arm. Especially at 4:19
Zecrid: That's part of the wide track design which allows them to turn so sharp
Big Truck Big RV
Oh yes I know how turning circles work the sharper the angle and shorter the wheelbase the better the radius. But I have a better idea for this truck. Drift truck! Because drift cars need a lot of steering angle to get those sick sideways action yo!
Do Dodge Pickup truck frame still break at the steering gear box? At the time, shops were refusing to fix that.
5500 starts at 4:00
I just wonder if rv owners would buy a truck similar to this and put a rv type flat bed and 5th wheel hitch on them just to haul a large 5th wheel.
thanks for the video. I've been looking hard at the 5500 crew cab as a 5th wheel hauler. What can be done to improve the ride?
Jeff Konicky: Do a leaf spring swap to an 3500HD or add sulastic Shackles
what do you think about the air ride suspensions? Will that help?
Jeff Konicky just put some weight on it
Look at Kelderman products.
Liquid spring suspension is awesome, we have them installed on our dodge 4500 ambulances and will never go back to spring or air suspension.
And I wish chevy used a solid front axle in them if they were to make them
P Dawg: More compatible with vocational upfitted add-ons, like Ambulance and Tow trucks
Big Truck Big RV would a regular pickup bed fit on an open channel frame?
Chassis cabs use open channel frames to make upfitting easier. They are a straight frame which is longer and narrower than a pickup frame, so fitting a pickup box on one would require fabricating new frame mounts and adding a filler between the cab and bed.
Here’s a guy who has built himself a 5500 single rear wheel with a pickup bed. www.cumminsforum.com/forum/4th-gen-cab-chassis/602274-5500-srw-pick-up-build-up-w-pics.html
Sales need to take some tech classes at ASA Vision conference in Overland Park Kansas.
:) only BTBRV could get me to watch a Ram video...
TShull
RAM are the best.. Furd Turds and Shitvrolets are both junk
+RAM TRUCKS be nice. not everyone can accept reality
I cannot speak for dodge but a friend of mine has 3 f550s he let me borrow them from time to time they ride great even without a trailer .
According to Dana the S111 is a 14'000 lbs the S130 is a 16'000 lbs Axel
When are you going to put your bumper back on?
Alexander McKay: very soon
Do you know how they de-tune the f450/550? Is it through the computer or smaller turbo, etc?
Wonder why the DEF Filler and cap is predominant @2:30 this creates confusion
people puts DEF in the diesel and vice versa.
I like the DEF filler under the hood it is not technically difficult to do.
could the bigger wheels & brakes be an option on the 3500?
Seen any Ford dealers running good deals on F150s? Like that STX you did a while back.
I had a Ram 1500 truck a few years ago. I traded it in after about a year because it was the roughest ride . I went back to my GMC Sierra 1500.
Just out of curiosity...
How does the leaf spring set up on the 3500 chassis cab compare to the regular 3500?
significantly more leaf springs and a firmer ride on the Chassis cab
@@BTBRVReviews I kinda figured, but I wasn't 100%
I'm four hours late but I'm still hear. Can you please do a review on a truck camper.
Go to places like TruckCamperForums.com - RV.net - IRV2.com for camper information
What is the reason the engines are de-rated on the 4500+?
CFEFZ . Maim reason is longevity, and they are often used by employees that will drive em like they stole em.
High output engines normally run more aggressive fuel/boost settings which can impact durability longterm.
Nice!!
How hard would it be to put a bed on that truck?
How well would it work with air bags?
You said the engine was derated (at the end) Why does the manufacturer do that? What's the poing of dialing back the power?
longevity and realizability. Plus,. employees driving fleet trucks don't need the acceleration and power designed to put a smile on personal truck owner's faces. To business owners it all about ROI and getting the longest service life.
Don't buy a 4 door work truck because then everyone's going to start asking you for rides to the worksite. I buy regular cab..
Bill Patterson or you could just say no
Are the modern diesels from Ford/GM/Dodge making the exhaust from stainless steel? I'm really glad to see the powder coated chassis on that Ram - I think that will be a more durable surface than the wax coating.
Why can't you buy def fluid at gas stations like QT, Circle K ect..
You can get it at the Flying J truck stop at the pumps
DEF that something like/for Ad blue?
I was wondering do you do comerical dump truck comparison video you do a thorough job better than any sales man giving consumers valuable information the time it would take for a person to look up
74 gallon tank?!?! :O
why are these heavier duty trucks detuned? seems pointless to detune a motor that is meant to heavy haul. just got a 3500 with the high output cummins. the ho cummins was the deciding factor for getting that truck lol
Does anyone know why the factory de-tunes the Med duty?
why is the engine derated??? is the 6.4 V8 derated as well???
Why do they derate the engine in the heavier trucks?
Never knew that ram did a 5 series.
Zecrid Same.
The Class 5 Ram was handled by Sterling from 2006-2009 when Daimler owned it. It was known as the Bullet.
Zecrid The 5500 is the Dodge equivalent to the Ford F450.
Then explain what the Ram 4500 is equivalent to?
Ram has had chassis cabs since 2007.
Why is it they limit the power output on the diesels in a work truck package?
ibkg longevity of the engine most times
Also adding to my other comment ram 5500 uses a 4.88 gear which is higher than the Ford's I believe
RobsPower Channel also burns more fuel. The trade off is more pulling and hauling at the cost of fuel
RobsPower Channel: That RAM had a 4.44 rear end.
That ram did but it is also a option for have a 4.88 axle in the 5500
Yes but also uses less power to get starting motion I like higher axle ratio for work trucks
The Ram offers 4.10, 4.44 and 4.88 ratios while the Ford offers 4.10, 4.30 and 4.88 ratios in their Class 5's.
The single rear wheel is not a chassis and cabin is just a regular 3500 pickup with bed removed
not true. Any pickup with a Cab up front and an open frame in the back is a Chassis Cab
Clown PrinceB I have a ram 3500 dually with an AISIN and love it. I have had no issues with having to tight of a turning radius.
