    I’ve always watched your videos and absolutely love your truck & trailer. I just got back from a trip with my ram 3500 pulling my 40’ solitude. Pulling my trucks runs at about 1200-1300 rpm’s. I guess i never knew the 5500 ran rpm’s so high. With that said your truck is still my dream truck.

    I run a 2017 Ram 5500 crew cab 4x4 Dually with a stretched frame & 4:88 gears and a 6.4 Hemi gas.... It's been made into a Flatbed Tow truck.... It's 15,300lbs UNLOADED with only a full tank & all the equipment needed & a Driver. When it's working, It's operating daily at max capacity, often slightly over with Permits. It's been flawless since day one in early 2017 (it's October of '21 now) The 5500 is a Very capable very well built reliable chassis. plus, with the wide front axle, the steer wheels sit further from the frame allowing the 5500 to turn tighter than a 3500! There's too much to list about these chassis... but they're badass! :)

    Great video, I wish it was made a few yrs ago. 4.88 gears can do pretty well on the highway. I had a 5500 with these gears and it got about 6.2mpg hauling 5cars and cruising at 67mph on the highway. Now I have a 5500 with 4.44 and hauling 6 cars, I get 7.3mpg at 70mph. Both gears can tow quite 35,000lbs comfortable but one will give you a better mpg. Also if you have hills where you run your route this 4.88 would be your best bet all day.

      Yup, the 5500's are pretty darn well setup trucks for sure. Most of the time we are in the mountains out west so the 4:89 gears seemed like the right choice for us for sure. Thanks for popping in!!

    Very good and informative presentation. My wife currently has an '18 Ram 2500 4wd 6.7L 3.42 ratio. We have a slide in 4wheel popup camper. We do run Hot Shots Secret products to keep the emmisions equipment clean. Without the additive, the fuel economy is 13mpg with the camper. With the additive, 18mpg @ 70mph and 22mpg @ 65mph. Before we got the camper, we had a bed cover. On a 6600 mile trip from Lancaster, CA to NC, VA, PA, OH, CO, and back home. We got 26mpg running 65mph average.
    I am planning to buy a 4500 or 5500 to mount a flatbed. Then buy a flatbed style camper. I will probably lift the truck a little, and run super singles for overlanding adventures. overlanding.

      I have the same truck in a 3500. I changed out my gears to a 4:11. Made a world of difference in pulling my 14K 5th wheel. but it did hurt my milage. But it pulls so much better on the interstate. I cruise about 65 with the cruise on and have less down shifting with hills. Not a cheap upgrade. Manual hubs, locks - front and rear and gears. But now it is more of a offroad truck like the Power Wagon. Love the Cummins.. Enjoy.

    I've really enjoyed your videos, walkthroughs, and thorough review of your RAM 5500. Thank you for the time and effort you put into them!
    One thing I didn't see mentioned in any of your videos is how you feel about the stopping power of that truck when towing 26k pounds. Do you have any concerns about the truck's ability to safely stop the rig even if the trailer brakes malfunction? Have you had to emergently stop yet?

    Great video! I have a 2019 F-450 with 4.30 gears and it’s turning over around 2100rpm at 75. I ordered a 5500 with 4.88’s so I was curious what rpm’s it would run at highways speeds. I don’t know why Ford and Ram don’t offer the higher tow rating with the 4.30 or 4.44 rear end in the chassis cab trucks. My 450 is the pickup version with 4.30’s and they are rated to tow more than the F-550 with 4.88’s go figure! I pull 35,000lbs goose necks with it day in and day out so I know these trucks are more than capable of it.

    Trying to do as much homework as possible to hopefully receive delivery in about 5 years for retirement. Weighing out the pros and cons between the 3500 and one like yours. I may not get a 24k 5th wheel but I tend to think along the lines of having the ability and not need it than not having it but needing it. My guess is that there is probably better than $50k difference between a $90k 3500 dually and a Luxe 5500. Plus I'm hoping that in 5 years Ram will have come out with the Yellowstone Edition truck. 😄 So daily driving could easily top 10-15 mpg hopefully? Thanks for the video

    • @daveanddianethrowingcautio5707
      @daveanddianethrowingcautio5707  Год назад +1

      I am of the same mindset as you when it comes to having more than enough truck. I never hear anyone say they wish they had less truck. We can easily top 10mpg and more with our current truck but saying that we always top 15 mpg would be stretching things. HAve a great weekend Paul.

  • @celestepalm6949

    Hello Dave. Sorry if you've been asked this already but wondered what you do with your 5500 to soften the ride when it's not pulling the 5th Wheel. I've been looking at a 450/4500 dually + 5th wheel rig that weighs 11495 lbs, but if the mpg improves with a 5500 making light work pulling the same 5th wheel, then going a size-up on truck sounds worthwhile. Especially if I plan to swap the fiver for a large truck camper for more hard-core boondocking trips. Either way, my unloaded forays would be infrequent. Thanks for your input.
