Yeah the last play technically shouldn't have happened according to the exact letter of the rule, but it's a stupid rule that a team can run an illegal play on a fourth down and still have it count to run out the clock. And keep in mind that neither head coach and neither the refs on the field or upstairs (which were MAC AND Big 12 refs), stopped the play. The play is what should have happened, even if it wasn't in the rules. Great win for CMU.
@@NickCoppolaNFL u think if i have the last play i shouldnt have to run a legal play? So i can have my whole team hold tf outta every player to run out the clock?
The run for the score was amazing BUT the real hero here is the WR who caught that pass, had the presence of mind to lateral it before being tackled incredible
Fun fact. Oklahoma State won the Alamo Bowl later that year after going 10-3. However, their Alamo Bowl rings said 11-2 cuz they aren’t counting this game as a lose. Pathetic. They should have won the game, but they didn’t and they need to own that
@@soonerace9139 Those 11-2 rings are the weakest move I have ever seen in NCAA athletics. Unbelievable. Gundy can argue all he wants about what happened here, but once the call was made by the refs to run the untimed down, then it's over. You can't take the points off the board for CMU. Central did nothing wrong...the refs said you get one more play, so they ran one more play. Maybe Gundy should spend more time coaching his team on how to defend against a Hail Mary and less time whining about the loss. The official record shows OSU's record at 10-3. To call it anything else is just a lie. Who wants to wear a ring for the rest of their life that has a lie printed on it?
@@folo_x3434 No way. In spite of the misinterpretation of the way the rule is written, the refs made a call and that call stands. Gotta remember, this is the same school, the only school, that asked to be retro actively given a championship 60 years after it happened. Not only did they accept the “championship”, they stole it from the Army team and put it in their stadium. The gall of this school is unmatched.
I still to this day don't understand why Rudolph didn't just run backwards and land on his ass to expire the clock. Nothing would have been called and time would have expired. It's too risky to just lob it up and have a chance at intentional grounding. The last play shouldn't have happened anyways, but still ridiculous.
The start of Cooper Rush, Dallas said they want that. Every game I watched that week and time stopped on this mayhem!!!! As a Maryland Terrapins fan I never thought that was possible. 8 years ago still feels lik yesterday
True, but CMU’s current coach Jim McElwain is a much better coach. The truly crazy thing is, that play should never have happened. While the game cannot end on a defensive penalty, it can end on an offensive penalty. There should not have been an un-timed down. Exciting finish though!
It may be true by rule book. But u shouldnt be able to end game on a offensive penalty if its 4th down... I only think so bc i could eat up a lot of clock if i can tell every player holding is encouraged... Have offensive players tackling defenders to eat up more clock ?
@@thomasdanley7642 Nope. OSU legitimately Lost! :) The OSU coach didn't have a problem with it. Until later about the new (and flawed) rule overlooked as that was never the rule's intent. Game was called on top of it.
Idk what was up with the editing, but that last TD for OSU on 4th and 1 has a blatant hold where the CMU defender who could have stuffed the play was literally tackled and there was no call... the deserving team won the game for sure.
The rules are what they are, but central had to get themselves in position make the play and they did just that. They made the right decision to go for that hail Mary and then lateral to an eligible receiver
The stupid part about this is it was a lousy 4 seconds. Just run the damn ball backwards. Take the safety if you have to. 4 seconds is easy to eat up but they totally screwed the pooch twice. Their last two plays should have easily finished the game for them.
How is not that the qb and the entire OSU sideline can forget the rules of the game. There was clearly nobody downfield. The Qb was clearly still in the pocket. The refs knew that. They couldn't believe it. How stupid can OSU be.
Mike Gundy should have been fired right then and there. Instead, they doubled down. This man cannot win anything that matters and always finds a way to lose games OSU shouldn’t definitely win.
Oklahoma State got robbed, the game clock has :00, the referees give Central Michigan the ball with no time remaining after Oklahoma State penalize for intentional grounding(which is the right call), that's why the referees got suspended due to an error. Offensive penalties when the clock expired ends the game only.
Wasn't a joke of a call, tho. It was a newer rule that wasn't intended for something like that situation at all. I may be wrong, but I think after that debacle they tweaked that rule for the best. Anyway, it's intent was in the Opposite direction. That the losing team can't keep the game going on an intentional penalty. And that if the losing team in desperation for a last play as intentional grounding, you don't have the winning team unnecessarily coming out on the field, doing a kneel THEN ending it. That was the intent -- not that one. Why would a winning team do an intentional grounding at the end of the game, right? It would have been a Joke if one of the QB/OC/HC purposely called the play TO intentionally ground, knowing of the new rule, argued with the refs about it at least (if not throwing the red flag), and the refs STILL went about it. THEN that would have been a Joke by the refs and they should be flipping burgers. But the joke is the OKC team not arguing with the refs and throwing the red flag. They too believed the refs were going by the Correct rules that have always been there up until recently before that time.
That NEW rule (at the time) was designated against the losing team trying to throw it away for a last chance. They changed the rule back where that should be fine -- and is, so they would have won 99% of the time by fairness -- but you are correct, at the time, they could have gone against it, to not let that last play be done. However, also, if a play is allowed -- it counts. So OkSt can't say "that doesn't count". The PLAY shouldn't have counted on said NEW (non-fitting) rule... but they also didn't contest it. So YES, it counts. Eat It. Love it. Ya lost. :)
