And of course The Curse of #2. 7 different teams were upset when ranked 2nd. Stanford defeated #2 USC, 24-23. Oregon State defeated #2 California, 31-28 Rutgers defeated #2 South Florida, 30-27. From what I remember Juice fizzled out and even lost his starting job at Illinois to Eddie McGree. He was never going to be an NFL QB. He was riding on his athletic ability and cannon arm and didn't get better.

The year before when OSU went undefeated before losing in the NT, a 2-win Illinois team ran OSU pretty close as well. Illinois did the same in 2002 when OSU won the NT. For whatever reason, Illinois could give Ohio State a tough game in these years.
I'm Illini till I drop and I was at this game. Greatest sports experience in person of my life. We got to go to the Rose Bowl, and I think they still made the title game that year. Never forget it!

Most definitely. As Illinois fans we have the highest of Highs and the lowest of lows. But one thing we always seem to pull off is at least one or 2 wins a year that people said we had no business winning. My favorite wins that come to mind are this game, the Wisconsin upset in 2019 (McCourts face after passing out at the bottom of the dog pile and being lift on the teams shoulders was such a great moment. Also that was the first time in a while they won in the grey ghost uniforms that I love so much), the penn state upset last year that was the longest game in college football history, and finally the Texas bowl agains the RG3 led Baylor. There are more but those are probably the top favorite games of all time for me. I remember my Dad had just gotten a divorce from his second wife (a total lunatic sociopath but that is beside the point) so He, My older brother, and myself found a house finally after staying at a work friends of his house for a couple weeks. This house was really cool and basically became a bachelor pad since it was just us 3 living there. Anyway he had started tending bar on the weekends to make some extra cash on the side from his computer tech job and he decided he didn’t want to see the blood bath that Baylor was supposed to inflict on Illinois. My older brother was out doing god only knows what. I liked going out and getting in trouble as much as the next teenager but my love for the Fighting Illini surpassed my love for hanging out with friends. So I was at home all alone watching that game and Illinois just destroyed them. I remember texting my dad at halftime or the 3rd quarter and telling him that he had better turn the game on at that bar he was tending at because he was missing the best game all season. Needless to say he was flabbergasted when he saw the score. This was pre everybody owning a smartphone so sending links and streams wasn’t a thing. I remember just jumping around giddy all alone at my house like I was a little kid on Christmas. Looking back it is sad to say but that night might have been the last time in my life where I didn’t have a care in the world and was truly happy.

From what I remember, Ohio State also recruited Juice Williams hard. Zook brought some of the best high school recruits in the country. These recruits were on the level of Ohio State and USC at the time. That's why it didn't totally feel like an upset, but also that the recruiting was finally paying off.

The thing I always remember about this game is on that big play by Illinois, it was VERY clearly a fumble into the end zone for a touch back that was completely ignored. I'm not sure where they were in implementing replay, but that should have been a turnover with OSU ball at the 20 going the other way. Probably changes the entire game from there.

Illinois chewed up the final 8 minutes of the fourth quarter in this game and Ohio state never got the ball again. I watched it. 2007.
The thing I always remember about this game is on that big play by Illinois, it was VERY clearly a fumble into the end zone for a touch back that was completely ignored. I'm not sure where they were in implementing replay, but that should have been a turnover with OSU ball at the 20 going the other way. Probably changes the entire game from there.
Ground caused the fumble, ball is dead where the runner went down. It was the right call, and the announcers quickly said the reason.
