  • Live on stage, Jamie Oliver and Simone Caporale make the Sidecar cocktail - an absolutely classic cocktail that combines rich cognac with sweet orange liqueur and zesty freshly squeezed lemon juice. It's Jamie's favourite party drink - give it a try and maybe it'll be yours too? Created in partnership with Bacardi.
Recorded in front of a live, thirsty audience at BBC's Good Food Live show in London.

My favorite favorite favorite drink for weekday night after a busy day. Fresh lemon juice is the key. Don't forget the sugar around the edge it makes a good pairing.

I love the Sidecar as well. Refreshing, complex, elegant. And at the same time: super easy to make at home, with ingredients which are easily accessible.

NEVER randomly squeeze lemon juice without measurement. Especially not in a 130 pound-cognac - it's disrespecting the drink. ;) Great cocktail, though! Comes very reccomended!

+damillionmalania Pretty sure that's just standard baron otard which is like 25 quid. Still agree with measuring citrus juice though.

One thing that has always confused me is this: I know you're supposed to cool a drink by shaking it with ice, stirring over ice etc., and I even know that a drink tastes better when it's really cold, but I've never quite understood _why_ that is. After all, in most cases, it would be frowned upon if you served a decent whiskey with ice. So is there a rule of thumb/scientific/cultural explanation why we serve cooled cocktails but other alcoholic drinks are served unchilled?

There is a lot of difference, honestly I have developt my taste buds enough to taste the difference between drinks served in plastic cups that in my opinion are awful besides glass cups that gives the flavors a kick. Idk you should experiment

When alcohol evaporates, it brings out flavor(smell, not taste) and some of the particles that's been dissolved in the liquor. With scotch, I want to chill it, but not dilute it with too much water. That's why you'll see those fancy sphere ice ball or whiskey stones. With chilled scotch, you'll get a full spectrum of experience, because people don't usually drink that all in once like a shot. So when the scotch are warming up, you'll get something else from it. Cocktail is the same story, serve cold so that people can get a full experience. Go down your memory lane and see whether you've ever had a chilled shot glass that's icing cold and you'll know what I mean. There's no reason for that!!

That's a great question! I would like to see Simone make a video answering that.

      1. Cold substance actually tastes different, when a drink is cold it will warm up and you can drink it at the state you are most comfortable with the taste
      2. Alcohol doesn't taste as strong when its cold (due to tongue numbing or something the like), but it also hides other flavors, thats why a lot of people prefer whiskey neat, as its more flavorful
      3. The more important factor in my eyes is the dilution, as alcohol and other ingredients (bitters, etc) need water to bring out flavors. Thats why some people add water to their whiskey, they achieve dilution without temperature change.
I personally let some drinks get a little bit more warm, as they taste stronger and more flavorful (A lot of drinks with cognac). Other drinks i really like really cold, because the chill balances the drink (mostly sour and bitter drinks). I am no expert, but this is my personal experience. Maybe it helps ;)

What Xehanort said is completely true. I'd like to add a few things:
Usually, spirits of more quality and aging have a more complex flavour. Temperature, oxygenation and dilution affect those flavours. That is why a nice and expensive whiskey or rum are usually served straight or on the rocks, preferably using a hard ice; since it melts slower it stays chilled longer keeping dilution to the minimum. And, for the same reason, the spirits used in cocktails have a less complex taste, and more of a basic and characteristic one (e.g. A nice Bacardi Superior instead of a Santa Teresa 1796).
And another key thing shaking does is oxygenate it. Experiment a little and you'll taste the difference :) try a Caipirinha, or one of its variations (a really easy to make and awesome cocktail). Make one stirred (which is the traditional way), and the other using a shaker. The first one will give you a sharper and stronger taste, while the second one will feel "smoother".

I find Simone annoying. I also don’t like how he never measures lemon or lime juice, as a half a lemon can vary a great deal and small amounts of juice make a huge difference. “How to Drink,” “Distinguished Spirits,” and “Small Screen Drinks” are infinitely better cocktails channels on RUclips.
