I like a Black Russian variant where I replace the coffee liquor with vodka, and also replace the ice with vodka. And sometimes I replace the vodka with gin.
Same for me with Gin and Tonic. As Churchill said, " I always start the day with a gin and tonic. I take a large measure of gin and glance across the room at the tonic."
I love the Black Russian! One of my favorite cocktails. But i like my Black Russian equal parts Vodka and Coffee liquer. I kinda like the strong Coffee flavor in the drink.
Back in high-school we used to make "Green Russians". We just replaced vodka for absinth. It was quite different tasting, with a hint of liquorice. Also sometimes we'd do a "Broke Black Russian" where we just mixed vodka and coffee as hangover cure. Good times :')
The white Russian is one of my favorites especially during Christmas. If I'm making a lot of them for my family, I'll use Absolut Vodka, Kahlua, half and half cream. Also, to make it fancy, I'll grate chocolate from a Toblerone on top of the cocktails, top it off by adding a chocolate straw or wafer stick to the cocktails.
That's funny. I remember my mom watching Jamie on TV when I was a kid. She told me she learnt so many things thanks to these shows and that was one of the reasons she was able to cook us the (delicious) meals we had everynight. Today I'm about as old as her when she was in front of the TV and like her, I'm perfecting my (poor) cooking skills and learning a lot of other useful things and tips by watching Jamie's videos. Who knows, maybe my future children will do the same ? x) Thank you so much Jamie, you're the best :).
My favourite version is a white russian milkshake - ice cream instead of cream/milk. Boost with amaretto for that nutty whiff. One for the summer BBQ with a burger.
White is best...one iceball or two cubes...Classic vodka...kahula...25mi single cream...stir...beautiful....ace of cocktails....Jamie's right...nutmeg...smack it on....gorgeous drink...
A black russian topped up with Guinnes Extra Stout is a lovely drink too (and the only time I like Guinnes). Always gives me a 50s feel. The white russian is nice with either vanilla vodka or a touch of grated tonka bean for me. Gives it more of a dessert feeling and indulgence.
I like Black Russians, but for me I always do a variation of it. First of all, I make my own coffee liqueur; most of coffee liqueurs have a huge "artificial" taste. You just need some coffee beans and a nice vodka or grain alcohol, leave it infuse for 30 days and then add simple syrup. The trick here is balance how much of coffe taste and bitternes you want, how much sweet you want. There's some recipes, but I think that quality control is better when you make it tasting and balancing in real time. Then, 25 ml of this nice coffee liqueur and 50 ml of Jack Daniel's or some bourbon you like on an old fashioned glass filled with ice. Add an orange zest (it's incredible how orange flavour goes perfect with bourbon and coffee) and that's it. I call it "The Black Tenneessean". THE BLACK TENNESSEAN 25 ml coffee liqueur 50 ml Jack Daniel's Stir on an old fashioned glass full of ice and garnish with orange zest
Nope, not completely. It just takes over the place of the cream, so you get a hint of both of them. However, it does dampen the real alcohol taste of the vodka.
In Ireland black russians come topped up with coke and sometimes even a Guinness head. Queue confusion when I worked in a bar in Canada and had a black russian sent back 3 times because "it just tasted of coke" before my supervisor and I had a debate on the drink having coke at all. Made it right for the customer and then spent the night proving I wasn't crazy by sending my supervisor links to the Irish version.
Interesting bit of info about The Big Lebowski :) Also I'm a little bit bummed that I'm watching this after dinner. I had my last bit of vodka with my meal. Definitely going to attempt a non-dairy version of the white russian though.
I think cinnamon could work as well. I made a cocktail a few days ago called the Gin alexander (tastes just like the white russian in my opinion) which uses Gin, Dark Creme De Cacao (I used White Creme De Cacao slight mix up on my part), and Cream (I used half & half) than for garnish grated Nutmeg. I couldn't find any Nutmeg so I used cinnamon instead worked really well.
sometimes ill put a little bit of disaronno in there it makes it a little bit sweeter. also sometimes i put baileys and milk in together which makes it a little smoother if you want cover up the alcohol taste if you decide to go heavy on the alcohol.
I Once went to a bar and asked for a Black Russian. A minute later the bartender gave me a White Russian. He had honestly never heard of a Black Russian, so I told him how to make it...
Kahlua's a great substitute if you don't have those rich, strong, coffee liqueurs shown here, although I'm sure the above tastes a helluva lot better !!
Smoove to the lips and all the way down. The white Russian is definitely my favourite. Surprisingly though, thanks to the cream or milk, that actually works well with about 25mls of milk chocolate (not that powdered stuff). Just a smidge mind.
Great video! Thanks for sharing! I don't have coffee liquor but I do have regular Coffee! I'm going to try both of those out tonight! I've had a white Russian before but I've never made it! This will be fun!
Hi Jamie. I had dinner at your 15 restaurant with my family a while a go now. I had the Rum'n'Tings cocktail and it was brilliant! I have been looking round the internet for the recipe ever since but haven't been very lucky. Could you please make a video on DrinksTube. That would be great!
Shouldn't the cream float? Here in Italy I always get the White Russian with floating, so I wondered which one is the better option :) I fell in love with this channel, you guys are amazing!
***** Those two cocktails are my all time favorites. But my Withe Russian it's somewhat different, i use vanilla ice cream instead of milk and same quantities of coffee and vodka. Have it a try.
Grey Russian: 1. Prepare Black Russian 2. Prepare White Russian 3. Mix half Black Russian with White Russian 4. Done. For the ice, you could use eithor the one from Black Russian or White Russian.
try this on equal measure of: capitan morgan spice gold kalua and irish cream (bayils) shake and serve up or on the rock . in the end all the ingredients it taste like chocolate.. pls try it i sell this at my bar in israel , and it work very well
Hi, Jamie! Here's an interesting version, the white russian, for you all to try. Shake the Vodka and milk together until you get that creamy texture. Now.. Add the coffee liqueur in the bottom of your glass and then layer your shaken Vodka with milk on top of that. Coffee beans on top and serve.
I love the white russian, but plain vodka is just too boring for me. I have a bottle of Absolut Kurant that I use for making white russians. I don't really use it for anything else. Why would I need to?
That cocktail really ties the room together.
I thought it was the sweater
That rug really ties the room together.

You deserve a cookie! Infused with vodka

+Zelmel So... yes, yes, we understand, you love gin. Don´t say more. xD

Powdered coffee creamer wouldn't work? Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I ♥♥♥ White Russian and I used to drink that in Ireland, now I can make that at home! Thanks.
Happy to share that this black russian landed me a job as a bartender. Cheers!
When I made White Russians, i always love some vanilla vodka to bring out the cream and top it off with a little full fat milk with the cream!
Boaby Snipper Also cover with a dusting of coco powder!
Tried it... Now I'm hooked! They're just too easy to make!
The White Russian is one of my favourite drinks.
Wow its so simple to learn it is like making black cofee and milk cofee the difrence is just vodka instead of water thanks so much

A tribute to my favorite movie, love it!
My favourite version is a white russian milkshake - ice cream instead of cream/milk. Boost with amaretto for that nutty whiff. One for the summer BBQ with a burger.
Roy Cheung Boom. Nice work Roy
I really like it to replace the coffe liqueur with cold brew coffee. Somewhat subtler, less sweet, more aroma & caffeine!
+negligiblethreat Ooooo, nice idea.
Glasgow has two Lebowski bars. Both awesome.
I love the white russian, is creamy and delicious! thanks jamie, i love u more

White is best...one iceball or two cubes...Classic vodka...kahula...25mi single cream...stir...beautiful....ace of cocktails....Jamie's right...nutmeg...smack it on....gorgeous drink...
Very informative. Thank you
When you make a White Russian you have to shake it. It just makes it so much better than just layering the cream on.
I love chilled Lychee fruit a lot of it on the day after... Recommended!!!!
Ole P. Interesting touches. Need to give that a try.
The white russian ist the best 👌 You can also drink it in school or at work, if the boss asks what you drink, just say its iced coffe 👍
I like Black Russians, but for me I always do a variation of it.

Kuppz Thanks
You should try a white russian with White chocolate liquor instead of cream, it's amazing!
kevin vd brink MMM that sounds so good :)
+kevin vd brink That sounds absolutely delicious! Does the white chocolate liquor overpower the coffee liquor?
Nope, not completely. It just takes over the place of the cream, so you get a hint of both of them. However, it does dampen the real alcohol taste of the vodka.
I feel like Bailys Irish cream would be another good option! Man, I got me some experimenting to do lol.
Baileys is quite good with it as well, yeah! Though I personally prefer the white chocolate one ;)
That's how u do a White Russian way tha go Jamie... keep up mate & cheers!!
I’m just getting into cocktails so as a beginner should I use single or double cream for the White Russian?
this is Heaven!
In Ireland black russians come topped up with coke and sometimes even a Guinness head. Wow, that's amazing! We'll have to try an Irish style Black Russian soon!
lol same! what's this coffee business about? interesting. lol sending your supervisor links!
Simon Farrelly The addition of coke turns It into a cocktail called Colorado Buldog. But the Guiness is certainly an interesting addition as well!
A lovely vodka for a lovely cocktail:3

jackass123491 The Black Russian is your friend :)
Jamie Oliver's Drinks Tube That makes sense XD. I'll have to try it next time I buy vodka!
You're not supposed to stir everything together. the separation is the beauty of the cocktail.
I think cinnamon could work as well. Love this recipe!! I have a 2" block ice cube, is that ok to use?🍹
I've always preferred the Black Russian. Cheers, Jamie!

Being a bartender and not knowing how to make a two ingredient cocktail.

Kahlua's a great substitute if you don't have those rich, strong, coffee liqueurs shown here, although I'm sure the above tastes a helluva lot better !!

I use 1 to 1 vodka and coffee liqueur, with layered heavy cream
I usually take a half liter stein, and put half whole milk and half kahlua for my white russian. And some ice ofcourse
best ratio and the simplest. I approve this choice!
Great video! Thanks for sharing! I don't have coffee liquor but I do have regular Coffee! I'm going to try both of those out tonight! I've had a white Russian before but I've never made it! This will be fun!

Hey Jamie, can you please make a video for an Amaretto Sour and Whiskey Sour?
I like it how every white russian video names the big Lebowski :)
Instead of plain creme, something like Bailey's, or McCormick. Even seasonal irish creme like Pumpkin spice.
Hi Jamie. I had dinner at your 15 restaurant with my family a while a go now. I had the Rum'n'Tings cocktail and it was brilliant! I have been looking round the internet for the recipe ever since but haven't been very lucky. Could you please make a video on DrinksTube. That would be great!

bestdrinkrecipes THE DUDE!
Black or White... Always love em'
Well done :)
I think it's better if you shake the cream just a little bit, that way it's going to float on the vodka and coffee liquor.
Good tip!
Woah - that sounds lush Charles, we're deffo trying that!
I love the white russian, but plain vodka is just too boring for me. I have a bottle of Absolut Kurant that I use for making white russians. I don't really use it for anything else. Why would I need to?
would condensed milk work?
